NAIROBI, January 21 – Education will be the key thing Gor Mahia forward Michael Olunga will be considering as he arrived in Sweden to finalize talks with top tier side Djurgarden IF.
Besides negotiating financial terms, the third year geospatial engineering student also seeks to transfer his credits from Technical University of Kenya to a Swedish institution as part of the transfer.
Olunga who led the 2015 unbeaten SportPesa Premier League champions to their third title in a row, disclosed he is ready for the new challenge if he agrees terms to play in a country where former Harambee Stars defender, Andrew Oyombe played his professional football at Enköpings SK from 2004-06.
“The Swedish top tier approached me requiring for my services but I will look at their working conditions to see what they are offering me, if it’s a concrete deal then I might move but if it’s not I will think otherwise.
I will look at the money they are offering to see if it will benefit me and how they are going to take care of my education and if they agree I will transfer my credits,” the 21-year-old Harambee Stars forward stated.
The Footballer of the Year downplayed claims that it was too early for him to make the move after having a brilliant 2015 season that saw him net 40 goals both for club and country.
“Every person has his own story. I don’t want anyone to compare me either because everyone has his own luck and career path so success of another person doesn’t mean that Olunga will be successful or failure of another person doesn’t mean Olunga will be a failure.
“What matters is to have a big heart to perform and ready for the challenge because opportunities are there to be grabbed so if I take the opportunity and work hard just the way I was doing in KP, then for sure nothing can stop me from achieving,” Olunga said.
Olunga who saw his one-year deal at K’Ogalo expire last year, is expected to be in Sweden for two weeks.
His club team-mate and captain Jerim Onyango has wished him all the best.
He joined Tusker FC straight from Upper Hill High school in 2013 before moving to Thika United the following year where he was the main striker scoring nine goals.
