NAIROBI, January 30 – Kenya’s record try scorer Collins Injera grounded his remarkable 212th try to send the national sevens team to the Main Cup quarter-finals after overcoming Portugal 26-5 in the third round of the HSBC Sevens World Series in Wellington 7s on Saturday.
Injera who is looking to close on Argentine Santiego Gomez’s 230 world record try, made his intentions known from the start when he rose to pick the ball from Kick-off before sprinting to the try line for his opener that was converted by fly-half Biko Adema.
“We prepared well and I’m happy for this results. we managed to train together unlike the past where most of the time people are held up is school and work committments, Injera said,
Portugal skipper,Pedro Leal stuck back to reduce the points to two but Billy Odhiambo widened the lead when he was set-up by injera.
Injera completed his double after returning captain Andrew Amonde fed him to burst to the whitewash as Nelson Oyoo sealed the win.
In the opening match, Odhiambo cored twice to hand Kenya a beautiful start after handing off Hirayama before running to the try-line to hand Shujaa a 31-7 victory over Canada.
Billy gave Kenya her second try after touching the whitewash from Injera’s defence splitting pass as the Cape Town fourth finishers commanded the first period.
“We prepared well and did a lot of stregth and conditioning that has has helped us,” Biko said.
Benjamin Ayimba charges laxity at the back handed Canada a try but fly-half Biko Adema who made is 50th appearance in the tournament extending the lead from injera’s lay-off for his 41st career try.
Odhiambo then notched his brace as Adema converted for a 26-7 scoreline.
Second-half substitute veteran, Humphrey Kayange who was making his comeback for the first time this season scored on his second touch for his 149th career try.
In their last preliminary fixture, Ayimba charges went down 12-17 to book a date with titans New Zealand.
