“We want the tribunal to interpret for us the MoU we signed last year because as far as we are concerned it is a Joint Executive Committee Meeting which is supposed to make any decision pertaining to the League. We were not consulted in the decision,” KPL chairman Ambrose Rachier revealed.
NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 15- The Sports Tribunal on Friday evening stopped the discussion of the issue of expanding the Kenyan Premier League to 18 teams at the Football Kenya Federation Annual General Meeting on Saturday morning.
KPL CEO Jack Oguda told Capital Sport the issue will now be discussed on November 8 at a full hearing at the tribunal between both FKF and KPL.
“It was a fair hearing because the tribunal looked at the MoU we had which said only a Joint Executive Committee can discuss matters around the top tier league. We will have the full hearing on November 8 and from there is where we will get a road map,” Oguda said.
The issue to promote four teams from the National Super League and demote two from the KPL to make up an 18-team top tier next season was listed on the agenda with FKF president Nick Mwendwa earlier saying the matter is long foregone.
“It is an issue that we finished long ago and we made it clear from the word go that next season we will have an 18-team league,” Mwendwa said in a previous interview.
There was a similar turf war between the two bodies at the start of last season which led to mediation talks led by Ghana FA President Kwesi Nyantakyi, leading to the birth of the Joint Executive Committee and the drawing of the MoU.
KPL insists that the details of the agreement have to be kept to the latter, accusing the Federation of bypassing them and lacking respect for laid out agreements.
