NYERI, Kenya, Nov 18 – Magical footwork, confidence on the ball and precise passing; Those are just mere words to describe Busia County skipper Lornah Faith Wasike, and it is no wonder the Form Two student at Butere Girls High School believes she is the next big thing in Kenyan football.
Wasike has been Busia’s roaring engine in midfielder at the play-offs of the Talanta Hela Under-19 tournament in Nyeri, and with three goals and an assist in three matches so far, she believes her star is only beginning to gather light.
“It has all been down to hard work and belief in God. Everyone as an individual and then us as a team, we have very huge self belief and that is what drives us,” Wasike told Capital Sport.
She adds; “I want to work hard to become one of the best players in the country and my aim is to not just play here locally but move out of the country.”
Wasike is inspired by Harambee Starlets striker Marjolene Nekesa, who is currently starring in the UEFA Women’s Champions League with her Czech club Slavia Prague.

Nekesa is an alumnus of the Butere Girls High School and also hails from Busia. Wasike now wants to follow in her footsteps.
“She has been here before and has always inspired me. I want to be like her and play football in the United States and in Europe as well. I know I can do it and when I look at her, I get enough courage to keep working,” Wasike notes.
She is described by her coach Edwin Sakwa as a talent, who will flourish in the next few years.
“Her leadership is impeccable, and that is why she wears that armband. She is very disciplined and hard working, and when you add on her talent, then she is a complete player. In school she is also very bright and she has struck a very good balance. I know that she will be star. We will train and guide her well to reach her potential,” said the coach.
The pint-sized 16-year-old midfielder had made the Emerging Starlets U18 squad that was to play at the CECAFA Championships, but the team was dismembered after Kenya failed to travel to Kampala.

But, she believes she can still rise the ranks into the Uncder-20 and senior team as well.
“My dream is to play for the national team and I will work hard to see that dream come true,” Wasike notes.
She says the talanta Hela tournament has given her and many other girls in Busia a chance to showcase their talents and make it easier for them to be scouted.
“This is a great tournament for exposure and also gives us a challenge because we face the best players from all over the country and I want to thank the government for bringing it up for us,” she added.
For now, Naliaka can dream of the stars and land on the moon, as the rocket to her massive career is just but steaming up.
