NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 28 – Sheryl Angachi was easily going to miss Kenya’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final qualifier against Botswana, as he is currently at the Recruit Training School (RTS) in Eldoret after joining the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF).
Strict to the core, recruits do not leave the precincts of the tough training facility tucked in the outskirts of Eldoret town for whatever reason until they officially pass out.
But for Angachi, inter-ministerial intervention and talks between the Ministry of Sports and that of Defense through the office of the Chief of Defense Forces General Francis Ogolla saw her released for the two-legged tie.
This goes to show just how vital she is for the team.
Angachi joined the KDF in the last intake, just after the second round qualifier against Botswana, where she scored the winning goal.
Angachi makes final training session

And, on Tuesday, during the final training session at the Nyayo National Stadium, Angachi, in her shiny head, clear of the rules at the RTS was present, smiling and enjoying the session with the rest of the players.
“We were told it would be very difficult. It has never happened before,” said head coach Beldine Odemba.
“It took a lot. We had to request the Ministry of Sports through the CS and FKF’s leadership and we thank the CS because they were able to release her. We are happy she is here and is a good inclusion. We are sure that she will give us something,” said Odemba.
She added; “We had lots of faith that it was possible. We really needed her in this match.”
Namwamba grateful to Gen Ogolla

CS Ababu Namwamba, who paid the team a visit at their final training session on Tuesday also said he was delighted that Angachi, a crucial figure of the team, would be able to play.
“We have done everything possible to avail the best players. We have facilitated the release of Sheryl from the KDF and I am very grateful to the CDF Gen Ogolla. I want to thank him for accepting my plea for Sheryl to be released from training to join the rest of the girls,” Namwamba said.
The only absentee for Starlets will be striker Gentrix Shikangwa, who is out with injury.
