NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 24 – Harambee Stars assistant coach John Kamau has said early preparations will be key for the country to perform well at the delayed 2024 Africa Nations Championship which will now be staged in August, after postponement.
The tournament weas initially scheduled for next month, but CAF’s Executive Committee reached a decision to move it to August to ensure all facilities are 100 percent ready.
Kenya is co-hosting the tournament with neighbors Uganda and Tanzania.
Kamau has suggested that Kenya needs to organize monthly training camps to enable it to prepare better and perform well on home soil.
In an interview with Telecomasia.net, the tactician says early preparation would be the best to have a competitive team.
“The postponement is a blessing in disguise for us because we now have more time to prepare. It may seem like we have a lot of time until August, but it is not. We need to prepare early and not wait close to the tournament. I think we must have monthly training camps with the players even if for three or so days to try and build a strong unit early enough,” the coach told Telecomasia.
Kenya has been drawn in a tough group and will take on two-time winners Morocco and DR Congo as well as Zambia and Angola. Kamau admits that this will be a tough group, but says it will be a motivation to the players and technical bench to work even harder for a good performance.
“For you to win, you have to play against the best. It is a great challenge to have these teams in our group and I believe they will bring the best out of us. People may look at it as the group of death but for me it is a motivation,” the coach noted.
Kenya is making its debut in the tournament by virtue of being one of the three hosts.
