NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 14- Kenya Sevens head coach Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu has admitted the side still has a lot to do ahead of the World Rugby Series season opener in Dubai next month.

Speaking after the team jetted back to the country from the Safland Sevens in Namibia which was SImiyu’s first outing in charge, the tactician remains optimistic the team is on course and will use the remaining three weeks to firm up and ensure they are ready for the new season.

Shujaa finished second after losing out 31-10 to defending champions South Africa who paraded a strong side.

“The weekend was very good, we had a long week with the boys in Namibia and really pushed them at a high performance camp and they have responded well. They have met our expectations as per where we think they should be but we are still far and there’s a lot of work to be done we hope we can try and catch up before Dubai,” Simiyu, a former Kenya 7s and 15s captain said.

The side played twice against the South Africans, losing 22-0 in the group stages before meeting again in the final.

Simiyu who included four debutants in the squad to Namibia has been concentrating on the fitness of the players as well as trying out different combinations.

“In the first game against South Africa we put out a young side for us to gauge them against the best. Then also we wanted to see the experienced guys and how they can perform against the best and then use the results as a benchmark to see where we are,” Simiyu said.

He adds; “The results show we still have a lot to do going to Dubai. As at now we are concentrating on laying a good foundation for the whole season and I am quite optimistic we will perform very well,” the 33-year old added.

Going to Dubai, Kenya are pooled in a tough group that has Australia, Japan and France. Simiyu expects it tough.

“The pool is quite tough. It is an exciting pool because all teams play an exciting brand of rugby. We will profile them and know their weaknesses and how we can take advantage to come up with strategies to win,” he noted.

Kenya performed well last season and apart from managing their second highest ever points haul of 98, they won the main cup for the first time, dazzling opponents to win the Singapore leg of the series in May.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 15 – Gor Mahia’s Jose ‘Ze Maria’ Marcelo has been named the Fidelity Insurance Coach of the Month for October.

The 43-year-old has become the second foreign coach to win the award this season after collecting seven points for K’Ogalo last month.

Former AFC Leopards tactician Ivan Minnaert was the first foreigner to win the accolade this year after bagging the March award.

Gor started October with a 2-2 draw against Western Stima at Nyayo National Stadium before claiming the Mashemeji derby bragging rights following their 2-0 victory over bitter rivals AFC Leopards, and they then beat Mathare United 2-1 at home.

Ze Maria was unanimously voted by the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Football Commission to win the monthly award ahead of Tusker’s Paul Nkata and Sofapaka’s John Baraza.

The former Brazilian international received Ksh 50,000 and a glittering trophy engraved with his name.

Despite the good run in October, Gor could not dethrone Tusker FC from the top of the log, with the Brewers going ahead to win the 2016 Kenyan Premier title with a match to spare.

Gor Mahia and champions-elect Tusker will clash on the final day of the season at Nyayo National Stadium where K’Ogalo will hand the Brewers a guard of honor as it is in the traditional of football.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 15 – Paul Were’s hugely contested second half goal gave Harambee Stars a 1-0 win over Liberia in an international friendly match at the Kasarani Stadium as the side went eight successive matches without a loss.

The Liberian players protested against the goal saying Were had scored from an offside position after the Greece based winger broke off from his markers to pick up a cheeky pass from Michael Olunga.

Nonetheless, centre referee Andrew Juma let the goal stand as Stars built on from their replica Saturday win over Mozambique at the same venu.

Head coach Stanley Okumbi made changes to the squad that played on Saturday with Tusker FC utility Osborne Monday joining skipper Victor Wanyama in midfield in place of Teddy Akumu while Aboud Omar started at left back ahead of youngster Erick ‘Marcelo’ Ouma.

Ayub Timbe who missed the Mozambique match due to fitness was handed a start on the right side of attack ahead of Jesse Were with Paul Were who came into the second half on Saturday manning the opposite flank, Clifton Miheso dropping to the bench.

As early as the first minute, the visitors posed the first threat with Mamelodi Sundowns forward Anthony Laffour’s low shot from the left after dancing past Jockins Atudo going straight to Boniface Oluoch’s arms.

On the opposite end, Wanyama whose scoring record for the national team isn’t as prolific as his midfield prowess should have taken Kenya ahead but he blasted an effort over.

Timbe had picked the ball on the right, evaded his marker with some fancy step overs before delivering a cross that was punched into Wanyama’s path by keeper Tommy Songo.

Stars who were using Timbe and Were’s speed on either wing to attack came close again in the 13th minute with David Owino’s tap from a Jockins Atudo cross hitting the post and Wanyama again skying the rebound.

Stars kept on the forefoot though Liberia were proving to be a hard nut to crack. They knocked again on the door, this time Michael Olunga’s tap from an Atudo cross being an easy pick for keeper Songo.

The Liberians were calm and chose to gradually build play from the back with Sundowns man Laffor and Murphy Doley providing most of the danger upfront. Doley attempted a shot from distance but it was awry going high.

Laffor’s freekick from the right in the 29th minute was flicked over for a corner by Brian Mandela with a flurry of Liberian men attacking the ball six yards out of goal.

Three minutes from the break Were flicked the ball to put Eric Johannah through but the Mathare man’s effort to get a second goal in four days for the national team was thwarted by Songo who stuck his foot out to prevent the goal bound shot.

Atudo as well tried his luck with a stinging low shot from distance but Songo punched it away. On the counter though Liberia came close with Laffor releasing Doley but the latter was brought down at the edge of the box and ref Andrew Juma had none of it.

At the start of the second half, Okumbi brought in three pairs of fresh legs, Wanyama, Atudo and Omar all coming out for Akumu, Simon Mbugua and Erick Ouma. Mbugua who has been impressive with Posta Rangers was coming in to make his national team debut.

As soon as the second period started, the hosts went on the offensive with Johannah’s swirling shot being punched away for a corner by the Liberian keeper in the 47th minute.

Five minutes later, Stars broke the deadlock with Were sliding the ball low past Songo, the Liberian defense left rooted waiting for an offside call.

On the hour mark, Timbe was pulled out and Cavin Odongo who was impressive in his 13 minute debut over the weekend was introduced in his place.

The Posta man should have crowned his moment with a goal but his connection from an Ouma cross from the left went wide.

Three minutes later, Johannah had another chance to score after cutting into his favorite right foot, but his shot went wide from the left.

With 25 minutes left, Jesse Were was introduced for Olunga and the Zesco man was introduced into his favorite central striking position, one favorable for him to break his national team drought.

As the half wore on, Liberia began to make inroads into the Kenyan half and Laffour came close to getting his side level but his shot from the right went wide after picking up a ball planted behind the defense.

Ten minutes before the final whistle, Were had a chance to ink his name on the score sheet but his effort after doing well to control a cross from Mbugua rolled wide.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 16 – Sofapaka defender Noah Abich has been declared the SportPesa/Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Player of the Month for October.

The 29-year-old veteran full-back had a stunning month for struggling Sofapaka with one goal and three assists in three games to revive Batoto Ba Mungu’s chances of survival in the Kenyan Premier League.

Abich fended off competition from Tusker FC duo of goal keeper David Okello and midfielder Hashim Sempala as well as Gor Mahia’s Enock Agwanda to win Sh100,000 and a 43-inch LG smart television while the team received Sh50,000.

After losing their first game in October, going down 1-0 away to Sony Sugar, Abich was instrumental in Sofapaka’s second match where he guided the side to a 2-1 win over Muhoroni Youth.

In that match, Abich scored the equalizer before creating an assist for George Maelo who netted the winner.

The former Tusker FC player who joined Sofapaka in mid-season produced a man of the match performance in their last game that month, where he provided all the assists in their 3-2 victory over AFC Leopards.

Abich received 19 points, Sempala managed to get 12 while Agwanda got 11 after a seven-member panel of judges from the SJAK Football Commission voted.

The award will boost Sofapaka’s survival as they make one final push to stay afloat in Saturday’s season ender against Thika United and Abich is optimistic the 2009 champions will not be relegated.

“I’m so happy to be recognised but there is no time to celebrate as we are all anxiously looking forward to the weekend fixtures. Our fate is hanging and I hope this award galvanizes the squad to do well and hopefully get a good result in the determining game,” Abich, who is a dead-ball specialist, said at the club’s training base in Eastleigh High School.

“I’ve not had an impressive year, having to sit out the first leg then joining a club deep in relegation but together we have united for a common cause which is to stay up and through the tribulations we have faced as a club we retain hope of playing in top flight next year,” he added.

Nine players had been nominated for the monthly award including Tusker’s Allan Wanga, Jared Obwoge of Chemelil Sugar, Sofapaka custodian Mathias Kigonya and Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma of Gor Mahia.

Closer scrutiny however, knocked out six players leaving Abich, Sempala and Agwanda to duel in the final round.

Kenya Cricket head coach Thomas Odoyo (center) confident Kenya will win the two matches.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 16 – National cricket team head coach Thomas Odoyo is confident Kenya will overcome visitors Hong Kong when the two sides clash in an International Cricket Council (ICC) match on Friday and Sunday at the Nairobi Gymkhana.

It will be the first time Kenya is hosting an ICC event since July 2011 when they hosted the United Arab Emirates in the ICC Intercontinental Cup and the World Cricket League matches.

Speaking on Wednesday ahead of the fourth round of ICC World Cricket League Championship, Odoyo was optimistic Kenya will be among the top four nations to play in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

“As a country we’ve prepared well, I think we’ve done our best and yes we would have loved to have practice matches before but that didn’t happen. We have practiced harder and we are ready for the match,” Odoyo said.

“The team that does their basics well will basically carry the day and the boys need to be on the mark and cover their basics”, Odoyo added.

Kenya are currently fifth in the league standings on six points, three behind fourth placed Hong Kong and if Kenya wins both matches they will dislodge the Asian side in fourth position.

Odoyo will be banking on the inclusion of experienced Alex Obanda who is making a comeback after missing the third round of the ICC World Cricket League.

Coming from a successful Nairobi Provisional Cricket Association (NPCA) season, Obanda will be tasked to set a solid base for the rest of the Batsmen while Nehemiah Odhiambo and Nelson Odhiambo will lead the attack with Shem Ngoche commanding the run.

On the other hand, Hong Kong is coming to this match from a 2-1 One Day International match (ODI) win against Papua New Guinea and will heavily rely on the leadership of 24-year-old Babar Hayat.

Hong Kong coach Simon Cook acknowledged the efforts put into security in order to make the two cricket matches possible.

“We are very gratefully for all the support that the Kenyan cricket board and the ICC for getting us here and getting cricket back in Kenya. There’s a lot of infrastructure that’s gone into security which makes the decision to come here a lot easier and we appreciate all the time and effort that has gone into this,” the coach said.

“In terms of the series coming up we take a lot of confidence into these two games due to the past performances from Papua New Guinea. We feel we have prepared well under the circumstances and we are looking forward to getting going and hopefully it will be two good games and the result can come our way.”

Kenya had failed to host any international matches due to insecurity but with the Kenyan Government assuring the country was ready to host a World class event, the ICC returns to the country for the first time in five years.

The teams that are competing to qualify for the World Cup are Scotland, Namibia, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Nepal, Hong Kong, UAE, and Kenya.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 16 – Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama has slammed the BBC awards after he was omitted from a five-man shortlist for the 2016 African Footballer of the Year.

Despite featuring consistently at both Southampton and Tottenham, Wanyama was not included and he feels he deserved to be among Africa’s top five.

“I thought I deserved but it is what it is. I don’t know the criteria they use but it is BBC and they will always be BBC. I am only focused on club and country at this moment and I don’t care what BBC wants to do or who they want to give,” a dejected Wanyama told Capital Sport.

Among the players named in the final shortlist is Ivory Coast’s Yaya Toure who has been sidelined by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and has not played for his club this season.

Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez, who was named the PFA player of the year last season, has also been named with Wanyama’s former team mate at Southampton Sadio Mane, now with Liverpool making into the list for the first time.

Others in the list are Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who became the first African to be named Bundesliga player of the year and Ghanaian Andre Ayew who plays for West Ham.

The winner to be announced December 12 will be decided by votes from fans across the world.

Wanyama, who joined Tottenham this season from Southampton, has however been nominated in the preliminary shortlist for the CAF player of the year.

The Harambee Stars skipper said his focus is leading Kenya back to the African Cup of Nations when the qualifiers for the 2019 edition start in March next year.

“We have won our last two friendly matches and we are happy. Hopefully we can take it from here. We are getting there, gelling well together, creating chances and it is just a matter of finishing. We have a good chance and a strong team for making the qualifiers,” Wanyama noted.

“We have a big squad and everyone can contribute, we are really glad and happy to have good young players coming through. Hopefully we are building something that can take us to AFCON,” the midfield maestro declared.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 17- Zesco United defender David ‘Calabar’ Owino has admitted the team’s failure to make it to the final of the CAF Champions League was a painful experience after exiting at the semi-final stage.

Zesco lost 4-3 on aggregate to eventual champions Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa after a fairy tale run that saw them qualify to the group stages for only the second time in their history.

“We had made a target that at worst, we should get to the finals but football being football, whatever happened just happened. It really affected us but we will focus on the remaining matches and see whether we will be there again next season,” Owino told Capital Sport.

The exit from the Champions League saw them take a tumble in the defence of their domestic title and the resignation of their coach George Lwandamina further unnerved the club.

“The issue of the coach had also destabilised us but since everything has been made clear now that he is joining Tanzania’s Yanga, we can concentrate on getting ourselves back on top,” Owino, who has been a regular in the club since joining in January 2015, noted.

“When you are used to one coach and he leaves midway in the season it can affect the team. But we agreed to work hard and look at finishing the season well,” he added.

Zesco are placed third on the Zambian League standings with 54 points, 11 behind leaders Zanaco but with a match at hand.

Owino admits with seven rounds of matches to play, the possibility of defending the title is slim but they will work at finishing second to hand them an opportunity to play in the CAF Confederations Cup.

“Looking at the table, it is a bit hard to talk of defending the title. But the good thing is that we have started picking wins and hopefully we can fight to finish at position two and get to play continental football next season again,” Owino noted.

The defender alongside midfielder Anthony Akumu and striker Jesse Were missed the club’s 2-1 win away to Lusaka United on Wednesday as they were in Nairobi for national duty but will be part of the squad on Sunday when they travel away to 15th placed Mufulira Wanderers.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 17 – Kenyan Premier League side AFC Leopards has been ordered by the Football Kenya Federation appeals board to compensate former coach Ivan Minnaert with a six month salary sum amounting to Sh2.4mn for unlawful dismissal.

The Belgian coach through his lawyers presented his case to the board saying he was unlawfully relieved of his duties after he was sacked by the club on September 1 over poor performance.

In a 29-page ruling, the tribunal chaired by Bernard Murunga argued that the club failed to substantiate any of their allegations towards the Belgian tactician while Minnaert argued that most of the results termed ‘undesirable’ were not of his own making.

“From our analysis, the club did not set any written targets for the coach other than achieving desirable results as indicated in the employment contract,” the tribunal listed down on its findings.

Minnaert had asked to be refunded the full amount of the 18 months remaining in his initial two year contract but the tribunal ruled that it was an excessive period as it pre supposed that the coach would not work at all during the 18 months.

Another issue raised during the hearing was the unclear contract signed between Minnaert and the club with the tribunal questioning why there was no start date written on it.

“The match against Bandari Football Club according to press reports was played on March 2, 2016 and it is fair to presume that the coach took his position after signing the contract in late February 2016 even though none of the parties dated the contract,” the Murunga-led hearing board ruled.

“We therefore confirm that the coach was duly employed by the Club under the terms of the undated contract as having commenced work at the Club as the head coach for a period of at least six months when his services were terminated on 31st August 2016.”

Minnaert was pleased with the tribunal’s decision but termed his six month stint at AFC Leopards as ‘the worst experience’ in his career.

“The decision from the tribunal has vindicated me, that I was truly dismissed wrongly. It is good that AFC Leopards know they need to deal professionally. I will put all the bad things behind and try to remember the positives including the fans who are great but suffering because of the management,” Minnaert stated.

This is not the first time AFC Leopards are facing trouble with a former coach as they were also asked to pay former coach Dutchman Pieter de Jongh Sh1.5mn over the same issue of unlawful termination of services.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 17 – Harambee Starlets head coach David Ouma says the side is ready for the big kick-off on Sunday night when they face Ghana’s Black Queens in their first match of the 2016 African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) in Cameroon.

The team has been camping in the seaside city of Limbe for the last 10 days and Ouma has switched the training sessions to evening to ensure the girls get used to playing under floodlights before Sunday’s game.

“During the COTIF tournament we played our semi final match under floodlights and I don’t think it will be much of a problem. Just to ensure we are 100 percent okay, we have decided to train at night so that we get fully used to it,” Ouma told Capital Sport from Limbe.

“The players are adapting well despite the high humidity we are experiencing in Limbe. I have tried to regulate the training sessions to ensure the players have enough energy for our first match,” he added.

Starlets will be playing at the AWCON for the first time in their history and Ouma insists they are still pegging their hopes on getting into the semi finals.

“It is such an honor for me to lead this team into the tournament for the first time ever. We still have our targets which we will work on step by step and taking a match at a time. The mood within the team is that we should put our best foot forward in each and every game and we showcase our talent for the whole continent to see,” Ouma said.

He admits he still has a headache over the forward line especially with the last minute withdrawal of striker Neddy Atieno who left to join the Kenya Defence Forces.

“It’s something that is still giving me a headache but I have been trying to work out different combinations with Esse (Akida), Corazone (Aquino) and Christine (Nafula). I am sure by Sunday I will have picked the best for the team.”

Meanwhile, teams have already started arriving in Limbe and Yaoundé, the two venues for the Nations Cup. Kenya’s opponents Ghana and Nigeria have already touched down in Douala.

Black Queens Coach Yussif Basigi speaking to peacefmonline.com has hinted his side, just like Kenya will be gunning for a semi final slot.

“We are trying to discard all factors that can affect performance and results and aim at our target. I don’t want to put unnecessary pressure on the players but we are definitely aiming at qualifying to the semi-finals.”

Defending champions, Nigeria are also confident of a good show in Cameroon.

The team includes Arsenal superstar Asisat Oshoala and United States based attacking midfielder Francesca Ordega who is confident the Falcons will defend their title.

“The goal for us is that we want to retain the Cup in Cameroon. Not just to participate, but to win and return the trophy back home. I am impressed with what I have seen since I arrived in camp,” Ordega told News 24 Nigeria.

Ordega has represented Nigeria at all levels, featuring at the 2010 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago and with the U20 at 2012 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Japan.

At senior level, she played at the FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments of 2011 and 2015.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 17- To guarantee a ninth consecutive season in top flight football, 2009 Kenyan Premier League champions Sofapaka will need to win against Thika United and hope Ushuru FC fall to Posta Rangers as the 2016 season comes to an end on Saturday.

Three points separate 14th Ushuru and 15th placed Sofapaka with the latter enjoying a better goal difference which might come to their rescue if final day results go their way.

“We are hoping and praying that Posta Rangers does us a favour. For us, at the moment, our concentration is on ensuring we win our match against Thika United. That’s where our motivation lies and hopefully the other cards fall in our favour,” interim coach John Baraza said.

So confident is Sofapaka of remaining in top flight that they already seem to have engaged their former coach Sam Ssimbwa in talks of taking over the club.

The coach was present at the club’s training ground on Thursday morning and Capital Sport understands the club’s leadership has engaged him in talks over a return to the club he coached in 2009 and 2010.

Baraza, however says his charges are concentrating on getting the job done on the final day of the season.

“It is not an easy match for us because Thika is not a pushover. They are a very experienced team in the Kenyan Premier League and we will expect a very tough outing. The players are very confident and we have agreed we will give our all to win that game,” the former Harambee Stars forward said.

The same sentiments were shared by defender George Maelo who joined the club in midseason and has been one of the pillars of Batoto ba Mungu’s revival.

“We have our job to do which is to win. The rest we leave to fate. It is a tough game, nervous for us as well but the good thing is that we have a very experienced team and we can handle the nerves,” he added.

Meanwhile, Posta Rangers have said they will be out to ensure they finish the season within the top four and not necessarily do favours to anyone.

A win for the seventh placed Posta Rangers will see them rise to third if Chemelil Sugar, Ulinzi Stars, Western Stima and Mathare United all lose their matches.

“We had our pre-season targets, one of which was to finish within the top five. That’s what we will be working on in that match. We are not thinking of doing anyone a favor. We will just go there to do our duty and achieve results,” Posta assistant coach Lawrence Webo stated.

Ushuru head coach Ken Kenyatta was tight lipped on his hopes for the Posta match on Saturday but silently, he craves for a win to ensure his side survives another season in top flight.

The rivalry between the two sides go a long way, with the taxmen having gained promotion in 2013 after beating Posta Rangers on post-match penalties in the Division One play-off.

Mwendwa not happy with CHAN preparations

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 18 – Football Kenya Federation chief Nick Mwendwa says he is not happy with the progress made in preparation for the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) which will be hosted in Kenya.

Mwendwa says the government is yet to approve most of the plans including the refurbishment of proposed stadia which will host the games.

“It’s not going the way we want it to go, it’s a bit slow. We are putting the pressure on government because December is here and 13 months to go we really need to show what we have done,” Mwendwa said.

“I have told the ministry and I hope things go well. We have done our part and submitted everything. We now need the budget approved, the secretariat set up among other things,” the FKF boss added.

FKF needs to show the Confederation of African Football (CAF) substantial progress made, but as at now, not much of the same has been made.

A high level CAF delegation led by President Issa Hayatou was in the country in August where they met Deputy President William Ruto who assured the government’s commitment to ensuring the country delivers a successful event.

With the country also hosting the IAAF World U18 Championships at the Safaricom Stadium Kasarani in July 2017, much of the attention seems to have shifted to the event.

Among the CAF requirements are four standard pitches with at least four changing rooms each, four training grounds close to match venues as well as hospitality facilities.

“The biggest challenge we are facing at the moment is stadium infrastructure. We are excellent with all other things because Kenya has beautiful hospitality. We need to get the stadia ready,” Mwendwa declared.

He was speaking on the sidelines of FKF’s launch of sub-branch level Under-13 and Under-15 leagues at the Camp Toyoyo Ground in Nairobi’s Jericho estate.

A total of 32 teams around the Nairobi East branch were handed footballs as part of a Sh10mn FIFA development project.

“The job of the federation is to develop the game and when you start developing from the Under-13s, you are planting the seed for the future and that is what we want especially for the 2022 and 2026 World Cups,” Mwenda noted.

He also disclosed that an all-star team picked from all sub-branch leagues around the country will be selected for an Under-15 tour of Spain in March where they will play friendly matches.

The federation will next year roll out girls’ Under-17 and Under-20 leagues with an eye on the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

Kipchoge and Jepchirchir seek victory in Delhi

DELHI, India, November 19 – Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge and world half-marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir will be in action at the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon, an IAAF Bronze Label Road Race, on Sunday.

But such is the quality of the fields assembled for the race, the two global champions are by no means assured victory.

Kipchoge has amassed an incredible record at the marathon distance, winning seven of his eight marathons to date – including the Olympic race – and clocking 2:03:05, the third-fastest time in history.

But his record at the 13.1-mile distance is somewhat more varied, with just three wins from his seven career races. His last half-marathon outing was in Ras Al Khaimah last year, where he finished sixth.

Nevertheless, the 32-year-old spoke confidently at the pre-race press conference and says he hopes to improve on his personal best of 59:25, set on his half-marathon debut in 2012.

“The aim is to better my own (personal) record as I treat myself as my biggest competitor,” said Kipchoge, who will be contesting his first race since his Olympic triumph.

“The course here is really flat and it will help in maintaining good speed and producing a good time. I want to go below 59 minutes.

“Although it is a bit hot during the day here, it is quite cool early in the morning and that will be ideal for running.”

If all goes well, Kipchoge could also challenge the course record of 59:06, set by Guye Adola in 2014, and even the world-leading mark of 58:44, set by Kenya’s Solomon Kirwa Yego earlier this year.

Kipchoge is the fastest man in the field but he is taking nothing for granted, especially as Ethiopia’s Yigrem Demelash will be lining up alongside him.

Demelash, the 2012 world junior 10,000m champion, just missed out on a medal in Rio when he finished fourth in the 10,000m and can boast of a half marathon best of 59:49 set earlier this year.

Eritrea’s Olympic 5000m finalist Abrar Osman and USA’s Olympic 10,000m finalist Leonard Korir should also be in the hunt for a podium spot.

Kenya’s world indoor 3000m bronze medallist Augustine Choge contested his first half marathon just two months ago.

Although his winning time of 1:03:25 was relatively modest, he won the race comfortably and could be poised for a big breakthrough against world-class opposition this weekend.

Jepchirchir aims to maintain winning streak

Peres Jepchirchir will be chasing the course record of 1:06.54 set by her compatriot Mary Keitany in 2009.

She will also look to extend her winning streak to four consecutive half marathons after her recent victory in Valencia.

“Mary’s record is a good one but my time of 1:07:09 in Valencia showed that I am in good shape,” said Jepchirchir.

“I have felt no ill-effects from my run in Valencia and I am getting ready to return to India and hope to run well again, especially if I have a month’s good training.”

Jepchirchir’s PB of 1:06:39, set when finishing fourth at the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon in February, is faster than the Delhi Half Marathon course record, so going into new territory in the Indian city is certainly not an unreasonable target.

In a year which has seen Jepchirchir establish herself as one of the world’s top road runners, her race in Ras Al Khaimah was her last loss. Since then, she has recorded six successive victories over 10km and the half marathon.

But she won’t be the fastest woman on the start line in Delhi. Ethiopia’s Worknesh Degefa and Kenya’s Mary Wacera both have quicker half marathon personal bests, having clocked 1:06:14 and 1:06:29 respectively in races earlier this year.

Wacera took bronze behind Jepchirchir at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. She clocked a PB of 1:06:29 earlier this year in Houston and last month won the Boston Half Marathon in 1:10:19.

Degefa’s PB of 1:06:14 makes her the fastest in the field. She has just one victory to her name this year, a 1:07:08 win from the Rome-Ostia Half Marathon in March, but has been consistent in all of her outings.

Gladys Chesire, who finished sixth at this year’s World Half Marathon Championships, world cross-country bronze medallist Netsanet Gudeta and world marathon silver medallist Helah Kiprop are also in the field and should pose a strong threat.

World 10,000m silver medallist Gelete Burka could also spring a surprise.

The Ethiopian has only contested one half marathon to date, running 1:15:38 at altitude in Bogota two years ago. But based on her form from this season – including a 30:26.66 PB in the Olympic 10,000m final – she looks set to significantly improve on her PB.

Also look out for 2014 world U20 5000m champion Alemitu Heroye, who will be making her half-marathon debut.

NOCK elections uncertain

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 19 – The much anticipated National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) elections will not be held this year.

NOCK Secretary General F.K Paul said they are not under any obligation to hold the polls in 2016 in accordance with the roadmap spelt out by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Paul said the world governing Olympic body IOC did not give a deadline but only issued guidelines saying the directive was misinterpreted.

“We first have to finish the constitutional review process which currently is ongoing before NOCK coming up with the roadmap to elections,” he said.

Paul said the 31st Olympiad by IOC will be closed on December 31 where they have to give an audit to its affiliates before the 32nd Olympiad is opened on January, 2017 to run until 2022.

“As NOCK we need sufficient time to carry our audit before submitting it to IOC and therefore that will not be possible for us to hold the polls this year as much of the time now is to audit our accounts and comply with IOC statutes in time,” he said.

The Secretary General added that NOCK will convene an Extra Ordinary General meeting after the constitutional review process is over for endorsement and then set the elections date.

The official said the government is frustrating the process by being uncooperative and is not following what was agreed during a meeting in Lausane with IOC.

“Sports Minister Hassan Wario was supposed to rescind or denounce the move he took in disbanding NOCK publicly just as he did when made the move.”

Paul said according to the agreement in Lausanne, the government was supposed to dialogue with NOCK on the roadmap to a new constitution and fresh polls something the minister has failed to initiate.

In a September 1, a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland between representatives from the IOC, NOCK and the Kenyan Government was convened to resolve the leadership impasse of the local umbrella body after it was disbanded by Wario.

In the meeting attended by a Kipchoge Keino-led NOCK and a delegation from the Ministry of Sports, headed by Wario, IOC ordered its Kenyan affiliate to convene an Extraordinary General Assembly in accordance with the current constitution and Olympic Charter to address and solve issues.

It was agreed that NOCK’s constitution be reviewed and the proposed amendments submitted to the IOC for approval in accordance with the Olympic Charter.

In a statement released by Jerome Poivey, the IOC Head of Institutional Relations and Governance, instructed its Kenyan affiliate to hold elections under a new constitution by December 31.

But according to the global body, the process leading to NOCK’s quadrennial elections must be agreed to by all member federations at the General Assembly.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 19 – Sofapaka survived relegation after demolishing Thika United 5-1 to see Ushuru FC demoted to National Super League on the final day of the 2016 Kenyan Premier League where Tusker FC were officially crowned champions.

Sofapaka needed to win and hoped Ushuru lost away to Posta Rangers and indeed the result went their way as the taxmen lost 3-1 to see their three year stint in top flight football come to an end.

The John Baraza coached side was trailing 1-0 to Thika, but a comeback led by a brace each from Moses Odhiambo and Ezekiel Okare plus Noah Abich’s penalty handed them the result and a ticket to the 2017 KPL season.

Ushuru who have only won one match in the second leg had fought back from an early goal by Cavin Odongo with Ebrimah Sanneh levelling in the 15th minute.

However, Posta who are seeking a top five finish overturned the results with Dennis Mukaisi scoring six minutes after the restart and Odongo capping his day with a brace eight minutes later.

At the Nyayo Stadium, substitute Allan Wanga stepped off the bench to score a well taken 77th minute free kick as champions Tusker FC ended their season on a high, proudly with a 1-0 victory over their predecessors Gor Mahia in the season finale at the Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

The Brewers, who won the league a fortnight ago courtesy of their 1-0 victory over AFC Leopards, never created as many chances as Gor who were fighting for pride, but they ended up being efficient with the half chance that came their way.

Apart from midfielder Collins ‘Gattuso’ Okoth who was relegated to the bench, all Gor starters lined up on the pitch to hand the incoming champions a guard of honor and applaud them for breaking their three year dominance.

It was a befitting end to the season for Tusker who not only ensured they reclaimed the league title but also finished the season with a double, and their man of the moment, head coach Paul Nkata dressed for the occasion as for the first time he wore a suit, complete with the yellow Tusker ribbon.

On his team with nothing to lose on the final day, Nkata handed a start to veteran goalkeeper Duncan Ochieng while Hashim Ssempala was rested and in his midfield place Cersidy Lumumba started.

Upfront, Wanga was also rested and in his place came in Mike Khamati who has failed to rediscover his form since returning to the side from injury.

Gor’s head coach Jose Marcelo ‘Ze Maria’ did not have his first two goalkeepers Jerim Onyango and Boniface Oluoch and in their place, former KCB custodian Sammy Okinda started in his first competitive match of the season.

George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo was also missing and in his absence Erick ‘Marcelo’ Ouma was pushed upfront with Rwandese Abuoba Sibomana slotting in at left back.

Fighting for pride, Gor were strong starters in the match and they had several chances to score, all which went begging.

Ouma had a shot from the left go over from a Francis Kahata cross while the former Thika United man also came close with another shot from inside the box that went wide.

Meddie Kagere should have punished Tusker in the 25th minute after they lost the ball cheaply in defense but Kagere’s shot from the edge of the box went wide.

Okoth came close for Gor in the 35th minute as well but he skewed a shot wide after turning to his weaker left foot from a well floated Karim Nizigiyimana cross.

Tusker were more offensive in the second half and Gor was forced to clear from the line in the 57th minute after Osborne Monday’s freekick found Khamati unmarked at the far post, the striker slapping the ball past Okinda.

Gor though were relentless in their hunt for a goal and they knocked at the door once again with Francis Kahata’s ferocious shot from 25 yards out coming off the bar in the 66th minute before Tuyisenge sent a low shot inches wide four minutes later.

Tusker used only their third shot on target in the 77th minute, Wanga curling the ball beyond the wall and past Okinda to break the deadlock.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 19- Fancy dance moves, smiles, laughter and camaraderie galvanized a party-full atmosphere for Tusker FC as they finally laid their hands on the Kenyan Premier league title.

Three years since they lost it to Gor Mahia, it was the most ideal of venues to pick up their 11th title, in the full watch and glare of their predecessors.

It was a bitter pill to swallow and it was evident in the low turnout of fans at the venue.

There was some small debate among the Gor players at the start of the match over whether or not they should hand Tusker a guard of honor as a mark of respect for their title.

At the end, skipper Musa Mohammed managed to convince his team mates to show respect to Tusker, who back in 2014 did the same for them, but only Collins ‘Gattuso’ Okoth defied, choosing to walk back to the bench until all the pleasantries were done.

“It is a very happy day for me. I won it back in 2009 with Sofapaka and I am winning it for the second time and it is surely a great day for me. Not very many people believed we could do it, some wrote us off, but here we are today,” Tusker skipper James Situma who is still in crutches after a knee surgery told Capital Sport.

Head coach Paul Nkata, a man known more for the track suit, Tusker jersey and cap on match day spotted a different look.

A well-knit black suit complete with Tusker ribbons on the edges and for the first time this season he never left the comfort of his seat on the technical bench.

“I am happy… very happy. This suit, I specifically made it for this day. It is a special one for me because it is the first time I am winning the league as head coach. Lifting that trophy felt magical,” Smiling Nkata said after beating Gor.

The usually emotionless Humphrey Mieno was in an unusually great mood and he could afford to take part in the dances here and there as he relished his first ever Kenyan Premier League title.

“I have tried to win the league for many years and today I finally made it. I have a reason to smile and be happy,” Mieno said.

The midfielder who almost signed for Gor in mid-season could not mince his words on the transfer saga; “I was okay with anywhere I would play in the second leg. Either way, I would still have won the league be it with Gor or Tusker. About next season, I am not certain myself where I will be.”

The players came out with their families to enjoy the moment, taking turns to take photos with the piece of silverware.

Gor’s head coach Jose Marcelo Ferreira ‘Ze Maria’ was submissive in defeat.

He said; “Congratulations to them (Tusker) for winning the league. For us, we go back to the drawing board and see how we can perform next season.”

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 19 – KCB RFC mauled bitter rivals Nakuru 33-3 to go top of the Kenya Cup standings after round three of the matches played on Saturday.

KCB opened the scoring through Darwin Mukidza’s penalty before Peter Karia landed an unconverted try off a rolling maul to take the score to 8-0. Mukidza would then convert Oliver Mang’eni’s try for a 15-0 lead at the interval.

Mukidza and Nakuru’s Henry Ayah traded penalties, the scores 18-3 at this point before the bankers landed further tries, first from Nick Ongeri and Collins Wanjala before Mukidza sealed the result with a late try at the corner, this result KCB’s first Kenya Cup win over Nakuru since 2011.

In Kakamega, defending champions Kabras Sugar beat a star-studded Mwamba 20-11 to maintain their perfect start.

Kabras enjoyed much possession in the early minutes and their efforts bore fruits in the 23rd minute when Ivan Kirabu popped over a penalty from the halfway line. Mwamba drew even minutes through a George Mutuku penalty.

Kabras regained the lead early in the second half through Kirabo’s penalty but Mutuku leveled for Kulqbu from the tee.

The introduction of Kenyan internationals Dan Sikuta, Edwins Achayo and Nick Baraza paid dividends for Kabras as they went for try searching adventures a number of times, coming out successful on two occasions. Nick Baraza Shrugged the Mwamba defence to barge over on the left corner.

Mwamba consolation try was scored by Bridgen Anditi with Collins Injera kicking in the ensuing conversion.

In Nairobi, Impala Saracens came from behind to overcome Strathmore Leos 24-12 at their Impala Club backyard.

Strathmore scored two tries while Impala had a penalty try and three tries as well a conversion to seal the win.

Elkeans Musonye and Adrian Opondo scored for Leos as Quinto Oongo, George Okowa, Kevin Ochami and captain Duncan Ekasi touched down for the Impala.

In other results Kenya Harlequin were 31-24 winners over Homeboyz, Nondescripts thrashed Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad 29-11while Western Bull’s thumped University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine 23-5.

DELHI, India, Nov 20 – Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge made a triumphant return to racing barely three months after taking the Rio 2016 Olympic Games marathon title when he won the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon, an IAAF Bronze Label Road Race, on Sunday, clocking 59:44.

Kipchoge accelerated away from his last remaining challenger, Ethiopia’s Yigrem Demelash, with one kilometre to go with the 2012 world junior 10,000m champion finishing second, four seconds back.

The contest for the 12th edition of India’s leading half marathon race – and the US$27,000 first prize – was quickly reduced to three contenders after just five kilometres, with Kipchoge and Demelash being accompanied by Kenya’s Augustine Choge.

Pacemakers John Langat and Ronald Kirui, both from Kenya, took the trio through the first 10km in 28:33, provoking hopes that with a slight quickening of pace in the second half of the race the course record of 59:06, set by Ethiopia’s Guye Adola in 2014, might fall.

However, 12 kilometres was reached in 34:16 as the pacemakers started to struggle. The leading trio were left out on their own and it was becoming clear that Adola’s record was likely to survive for another year.

Just after 17 kilometres, Choge was unable to stay with his two rivals and started to slip back while Kipchoge continued to force the pace.

In the final kilometre, Kipchoge found another gear but was clearly worried by Demelash’s potential sprint finish, repeatedly glancing back before crossing the line.

However, the experienced Kipchoge had planned his decisive move to perfection and completed a victorious return to Delhi after taking the 2010 Commonwealth Games 5000m silver medal in the same city six years ago.

“The running conditions were good, my training was good and with the right guidance from my coach (1992 Olympic Games 3000m steeplechase silver medallist Patrick Sang), I was able to win the race.

Along the route the crowd was also cheering us and that helped to further motivate us,” said Kipchoge.

Demelash, 22, who was fourth in the Olympic 10,000m in August, held on for second with a personal best of 59:48 with Choge also improving his personal best when finishing third in 1:00:01.

Degefa takes women’s title, Jepchirchir fades to fifth

Ethiopia’s Worknesh Degefa caused a slight surprise when she took the women’s title in 1:07:42.

Despite Degefa being the fastest woman in the field, all eyes were on the reigning world half marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir, who had won her previous four outings over the distance this year.

However, Delhi proved to be one race too many for the Kenyan who had said before the race that she had been suffering from blisters on her feet and a cold in the proceeding weeks.

Six runners, led by Degefa with her compatriot Ababel Yeshaneh and Jepchirchir running directly behind her, were still in contention up to 18 kilometres before Degefa pushed hard and split up the pack.

No one could stay with her and she crossed the line 10 seconds in front of Yeshaneh.

The two Ethiopians were followed home by three Kenyans with Helah Kiprop taking third in 1:08:11, Gladys Chesir fourth in 1:08:23 and the tiring Jepchirchir fifth in 1:08:28.

Controversial penalty sinks Starlets in Limbe

LIMBE, Cameroon, November 20- Elizabeth Addo’s controversial 70th minute penalty and Portia Boakye’s late goal drowned Kenya’s Harambee Starlets in their debut at the African Women’s Championship (AWCON) as they went down 3-1 to Ghana’s Black Queens at the Omnisport Arena on Sunday.

Kenya had gone ahead in the 24th minute via an Esse Akida volley, but Ghana fought back with Samira Suleiman equalizing four minutes after the restart while Addo’s penalty gave the West Africans the lead and Boakye sealed the deal with a 90th minute free kick.

Despite Boakye’s cross having hit Ann Aluoch’s arms outside the box, the referee pointed straight to the spot despite huge protests from Kenya, a goal which awakened Ghana’s revival.

There was more controversy five minutes later when the ref seemed to have given Kenya a penalty after Akida came down under an aerial challenge, only to change her mind and give the Black Queens a free kick instead.

Starlets had an early scare with captain Addo heading the ball in from a freekick, but the first assistant referee had her flag up for offside, giving a huge reprieve to the debutants.

Ghana started strongly with the pace of Addo and Priscilla Okyere driving the team forward, but a line of astute defensive cover ensured Kenya maintained the even score.

The West Africans who have reached the AWCON final thrice in their history were threatening especially on set pieces which Kenya at times found hard to defend.

In the 13th minute, captain Addo once again found some space inside the box to head in from a corner, but the effort rolled wide. Four minutes later, Boakye had an attempt from a free-kick but it landed straight into the arms of Samantha Akinyi, the Starlets custodian.

As the game wore on, so did David Ouma’s girls start growing into the game. In the 20th minute, Christine Nafula took on a spirited run on the right, wheeling past two markers before slicing in a low cross into the box.

However, Corazone Aquino could not get a boot on the ball with Mary Kinuthia picking it at the far end, but she was adjudged to have come from an offside position.

The goal finally came in the 24th minute with golden girl Akida swinging a half volley into the net after Wendy Achieng’s cross from the left gracefully bounced away from a Cameroonian defender, finding the forward unmarked at the far right.

The Black Queens almost drew level four minutes later with skipper Addo curling her effort over the wall and inches wide off Akinyi’s goal.

Ghana continued to threaten through set pieces but Starlets were lucky as none of the opportunities threatened.

Kenya almost finished the half on a high but Aquino could not get a strong shot on target after the Ghanaian keeper Ama Nana punched Elizabeth Ambogo’s free kick on her path.

Ghana came back from the breather with venom and equalized four minutes in from another set piece. Suleman dived in at the edge of the six yard box to head in a free kick from Boakye with the Kenyan defense left dazed.

Kenya custodian Samantha Akinyi was forced into a great save in the 53rd minute, narrowing the angle at the near post to block a shot from Suleman who had picked up a ball beautifully lofted into the area behind the Kenyan defense.

Four minutes later, Okyere danced away from Wendy Achieng on the right but her ferocious shot could only hit the side netting,

Starlets had a chance against the run of play with Cherish Avillia’s shot after the keeper spilled a Kinuthia corner going over in the 66th minute.

Ghana’s strong start ended in Addo’s penalty goal, albeit controversially with the Kenyan girls left dismayed.

On the other end, the Kenyans thought they were handed a lifeline with the referee initially pointing to the spot for a penalty after Akida came tumbling from an aerial challenge, but after confrontation changed her mind to award Ghana a free kick.

There was more drama eight minutes from time with Suleiman being denied her brace after curling the ball over Akinyi on the right, but the second assistant referee’s flag was already up with the ball curling out of play.

Ghana sealed the deal in the 90th minute, Boakye’s freekick from distance dripping into the net with Akinyi dummied by  Okere who had attacked the ball, but left it go over her.

In the earlier match, defending champions Nigeria started their title defense with a burts beating Mali 6-0 with Arsenal Ladies star Asisat Oshoala scoring four.

The Super Falcons now lead the group with Ghana second heading into the second round of matches on Wednesday. Kenya will play Mali while Ghana square it out with Nigeria.

Ouma upbeat despite opening day loss

LIMBE, Cameroon, Nov 21- Despite controversially losing 3-1 to Ghana’s Black Queens in their opening African Women’s Championship (AWCON) match, Harambee Starlets head coach David Ouma is confident the girls will bounce back when they play Mali in their second Group B match on Wednesday.

The biggest talking point during the Sunday night Ominsport Arena defeat was Ghana’s second goal from a hugely contested penalty.

“We will have to watch the clip again and see whether it was the right call. Critical moments decide a game and I think we deserved some critical moments.  The referee made some questionable decisions and it changed the game,” a hugely disappointed Ouma said at the post match conference.

His sentiments were also shared by his Ghanaian counterpart Yusif Basigi who questioned some of the referee’s decisions.

Starlets’ chances of making it into the last four now seem dim and they must pick wins in both their remaining matches against Mali and holders Nigeria who won their opening match 6-0.

“I want to congratulate my players for the performance in our first ever AWCON match. I think we performed really well, we had our moments and at 1-0 we should have been in a position to seal the game. Congratulations to Ghana for the win,” Ouma commented.

He added; “We gave it our all, we lost, but we will live to fight another day. We have to do better in or next match. It is a learning moment and we have to believe. We’ve got the experience so it’s one step at a time.”

Ouma also heaped praise on striker Esse Akida who scored Kenya’s first ever goal at the continental showpiece and said more of her will be seen as the tournament progresses.

Kenya faces Mali on Wednesday night in Limbe hoping to rake in their first ever AWCON win and keep alive their hopes of a last four appearance. This coupled with a loss by Ghana against Group B leaders Nigeria will hand them a chance.

“We have to keep working hard and using our chances. That is what we could not do yesterday. We have two days to prepare and hopefully we become sharp enough for Mali and show that we are also a good side,” Ouma opined.

Meanwhile, Ghana remain confident they have what it takes to handle defending champs Nigeria despite their red hot form.

“Ghana – Nigeria is always a different ball game. They massacred Mali 6-0 but it doesn’t mean that they will massacre Ghana. Let the day come and we will see what happens,” Ghana coach Basigi said.

NAIROBI, Kenya, November 22 – Tusker FC tactician Paul Nkata has been rewarded for the club’s stunning form in November by scooping the Fidelity Insurance Coach of the Month award.

Under the Ugandan coach’s guidance, Tusker won all their last two matches of the season that saw them clinch the 2016 Kenyan Premier League title.

Among those results was the 1-0 win over AFC Leopards, a victory which saw Tusker declared the champions with one match to spare.

They completed the job in their last match of the season, beating Gor Mahia 1-0 at the Nyayo National Stadium to finish the season on 61 points, seven ahead of K’Ogalo.

Nkata, who joined the Brewers at the beginning of this season from Muhoroni Youth, won the award ahead of Sofapaka’s John Baraza and Posta Rangers stand-in coach Pascal Ochieng.

“I’m happy to be finally recognized. It means much to me but it’s also as a result of joint efforts from the technical bench, management and playing unit. It is a sign of the good work we have done and we want to keep working hard to make Tusker more successful,” Nkata said while receiving the award at the team’s Ruaraka training ground.

“Next year we’ll have very tough assignments in the league so we’ll have a short break over festive season then embark on preparations for 2017. One or two additions are necessary in the squad but don’t expect very drastic changes,” he added.

Nkata, who was awarded Sh50,000, received 22 points from the seven member Sports Journalist Association of Kenya panel of judges ahead of Baraza’s 14 while Ochieng received 9.

He joins Francis Kimanzi (Mathare United), Zedekiah Otieno (Posta Rangers), Ivan Minnaert (AFC Leopards), Salim Babu (Sony Sugar), Henry Omino (Western Stima), Francis Baraza (Chemelil Sugar) and Marcelo Ferreira of Gor Mahia in the list of eminent recipients of the gong.

He also guided Tusker to the GOtv Shield title to complete a double and achieve his targets he set at the beginning of the year.
