Obiri rises to a new level after national record

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 10 – They say a good way to judge someone’s character is to look at those around them, and when it comes to athletics, the best gauge of an athlete’s ambition is often who they choose to train with.

For Hellen Obiri, who shredded a world-class 5000m field at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Rome on Thursday night, sailing to a Kenyan record of 14:18.37, her choice speaks volumes.

“I train with men,” she says. “We have a lot of groups in Kenya, but I like to train with men because they’re good to push hard.”

It’s as much out of necessity as choice, given the 27-year-old has now ascended to a level where few can draw breath, which was made clear on Thursday night in the Stadio Olimpico.

The race had been billed, once again, as a world record attempt by Genzebe Dibaba, but as it came to crunch-time, when Obiri asked the pertinent question shortly before 3000 metres, the Ethiopian had no answer.

On the build-up to the race, Obiri’s coach Ricky Simms – who is also her manager – had cautioned his protegee against an early move, given the obvious ability of Dibaba, who had requested a sub-14-minute pace in the days before.

“I thought Genzebe would push it forward,” said Obiri, “but when she did not, I tried to push it myself.”

‘Nobody can beat me’

After reaching 3000 metres in 8:38.3, Obiri dropped the hammer with a 64.8-second lap, which proved an immediate knockout punch to her weary rivals. Thereafter it was a solo run to the finish, the Kenyan squeezing every ounce of energy from her muscles as she sprinted to the line in a world-leading 14:18.37.

“When I came to this race, I told myself that nobody can beat me,” said Obiri, who took two seconds off the previous Kenyan record of 14:20.87.

In many ways, the race was an arrival of sorts for Obiri, who despite having a handful of global medals had so often existed in the shadows of either Dibaba or Vivian Cheruiyot, the previous national record-holder who is Obiri’s close friend and long-time training partner.

Indeed it was through working together with Cheruiyot, who is also coached and managed by Simms, that Obiri earned an Olympic silver medal last year, the Kenyan pair outsmarting and outlasting Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana in a memorable 5000m final in Rio.

To Obiri, who had returned to running after missing all of 2015 through pregnancy, it felt as good as gold. “It was my first 5000m at a championships and I’m proud of it,” she said. “But this year I’m running the race well.”

That’s quite the understatement, given Obiri’s mark moves her to number five all-time over 5000m and makes her the first non-Ethiopian to run faster than 14:20.

The key, she believes, has been consistency. “When I train well, with no injuries, I know I can do well,” she says.

Like most Kenyan athletes, Obiri’s day typically starts before dawn, setting out on dusty roads for a 10km run. Her baby girl, Tanya, is just two years old, but already well aware of her mother’s exploits. Her first question in the morning, Obiri recalls, “Mommy, are you going running?”

Later in the day Obiri completes either a second easy run or a harder workout and, she says, “a lot of exercises”.

Sights set firmly on London

Being coached remotely requires a certain level of independence, but Obiri has full trust in Simms. “Ricky is a good coach, he has experience,” she says. “He has managed many athletes like Mo Farah, Usain Bolt, so I know I’m in safe hands.”

Next on the agenda is the Kenyan Trials on 22 June, where Obiri will contest the 5000m, her sole focus for the IAAF World Championships London 2017. Then, after another block of training, she reckons Monaco will be her next stop on the IAAF Diamond League circuit.

Given her proximity to the world record, held by Tirunesh Dibaba at 14:11.15, it seems obvious to ask Obiri if feels capable of surpassing it.

“No,” she says with a laugh. “Not for now.”

Instead, her attention is on London. With Cheruiyot having moved to the marathon, and Ayana unseen since last summer, Obiri appears to have a golden opportunity looming. After becoming the fastest ever Kenyan over 5000m, she’s well aware of the responsibility to bring that title back home.

“Maybe we will do tactics like the Ethiopians, to work together,” she says. “I am trying to work on my speed and my finishing kick.”

As the 2013 world bronze medallist over 1500m, she should prove a tough riddle to solve for any of her competitors in London, and that’s just how she wants it.

“The goal is to win at the World Championships,” she says. “I’m going to try that.”

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 10 – Darwin Mukidza displayed a man of the match performance as Kenya Simbas silenced hosts Uganda 18-23 in the first leg of the Elgon Cup in a pulsating match played at the Legends Rugby Club in Kampala on Saturday.

Mukidza, the captain of the day led from the front, converting three penalties to see Kenya head to the second leg that will be hosted at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds in a fortnight with a five point advantage.

The defending champions started on a high with Mukidza converting a penalty just after the hosts missed theirs when Kabras Sugar player Philip Wokorach sailed his kick wide.

Uganda were downed to 14 men following Marvin Odong’s sin bin.

The Jerome Paarwater charges maximized on the advantage when Samson Onsomu dived over the chalk for Mukidza to convert  as the Simbas took control of the proceedings 10-0.

However, Odong’ made the amends when he went over the line straight from the sin bin as Wokorach converted to reduce the deficit to two points.

Kenya had a chance to extend the lead but they squandered the penalty after opting to kick for touch in search of a try that went in vain.

It was Uganda who made good use of their penalty through danger man Wokorach who drilled it in to hand Uganda the lead for the first time in the hotly contested match.

Minutes later, Uganda backed by their vocal home fans opened an eight point lead when Ivan Magomu chipped over the Kenyan back line for James Odong’ to touch down as Wokorach ensured the two additional points were in the bag with his successful conversion as Uganda led 18-10.

The new half backs, Magomu and Ivan Kirabo combined perfectly for the hosts to increase the tempo of the game from the breakdowns.

Having trailed in the first period, Kenya returned on a high with KCB RFC’s Eighth-man Martin Owila touching down for Mukidza to convert and be within one point as the scores stood at 18-17.

Uganda responded through Odong’ with a strong pick from the scrum down but the Simbas defend their line. The hosts found themselves in more trouble when Brian Odong’ was penalised for not releasing the ball to give Kenya a chance to clear their lines.

The Simbas regained their lead thanks to Mukidza’s well drilled penalty before hammering the final nail in Uganda’s coffin when Aaron Ofoyrwoth was sent to the sin bin and Mukidza made no mistake from the resultant penalty to hand Kenya a 23-18 victory.

Sierra Leone dim Harambee Stars in Freetown

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 10 – Ten-man Harambee Stars had a false start to their qualification journey for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone in Freetown on Saturday evening.

Kenya went into the fixture on the backdrop of a much talked about 10-match unbeaten run, most in friendly matches, but head coach Stanley Okumbi was stunned back to reality with his third loss since taking charge of the team early last year.

Julius Wobay’s low finish in the first half and skipper Umaru Bangura’s second half penalty saw the hosts pick a vital win, with Michael Olunga’s well struck freekick late in the second half not doing much to change Kenya’s fortunes.

Kenya went a man down with five minutes left in the first half when Brian Mandela saw a straight red card for a lunging tackle on Alhassan as the last man in defense with the hosts having switched in to attack so fast the Kenyan backline was found napping

Okumbi handed a national team debut to Kariobangi Sharks forward Massoud Juma who partnered Olunga in attack with Eric Johannah and Ayub Timbe providing the depth from wide.

Skipper Victor Wanyama and Anthony Akumu picked up midfield duties.

Despite going a goal and a man down, Kenya had the best of chances in the opening 45 minutes of the game. Massoud, Olunga and Wanyama had Harambee Stars’ best chances.

Massoud found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper in the 17th minute from a Olunga low cross, but the Kariobangi Sharks forward could not endear himself to the Kenyan fans on his debut when his pale effort was thwarted by the Sierra Leone shot stopper.

Four minutes on the turn, the Siaka Stevens Stadium was sent into frenzy when Wobay shot low past Boniface Oluoch in the Kenyan goal.

Dangerman Kei Kamara had broken away on the left before cutting back a cross which Wobay met and despite Oluoch having a touch on the ball, it hit the inside of the bar on its way in.

Stars had a chance to draw back level four minutes after going down when Wanyama glanced an Johanna freekick goal-ward, but the ball smoothered the top of the crossbar. In the 34th minute, Johanna had a chance from a freekick but he sent it straight to the keeper.

In the 36th minute, Stars had two superb back-to-back chances but both went begging. Johanna broke into the box from the left before cutting back a cross for Wanyama who saw his shot saved by the keeper.

The rebound fell on Olunga who blasted a left footer onto the crossbar and Sierra Leone cleared.

-Second Half-

In the second half, play was made tougher with heavy rains hitting the capital and slowing down the tempo of the game.

In the 56th minute, Alhassan came close to adding a second but he slipped as he pulled the trigger when he met a cross from the right with the ball going wide. The hosts came inches close in the 63rd minute when Alfred Sanko slipped a shot on the upright from a Hassan Sessay cross from the left.

The second goal finally came for the hosts in the 68th minute from the penalty spot after Kei Kamara was axed inside the box by Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma.

Skipper Bangura stepped up and made no mistake, despite Oluoch going the right way.

Going down 2-0 with 10-men was always going to be an uphill task for the Harambee Stars, but they showed some bit of fighting spirit with Olunga halving the deficit with 15 minutes left with a sumptuous freekick.

Despite fighting for the remaining quarter hour, Stars could not find the back of the net.

The other Group E match will see the Black Stars of Ghana host Ethiopia in Accra.

Kenya’s next assignment will be next year March when they host Ghana in Nairobi.

Gor Mahia players celebrate after winning the SportPesa Super Cup. PHOTO/SportPesa

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 11 – Second half goals from Timothy Otieno, substitutes Oliver Maloba and John Ndirangu saw Gor Mahia beat arch rivals AFC Leopards 3-0 and bag the Super Cup in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Sunday.

AFC Leopards had hoped for revenge against K’Ogalo who beat them 3-0 in a Premier League fixture in May, but their bid fell flat out with a horrible second half performance against a half strength Gor side.

The 15-time Kenyan Premier League champions were missing up to eight first team players, but it didn’t show a bit against an Ingwe side who were almost full strength with the only first team absentees being Robinson Kamura and injured Mungai Kiongera.

Gor, the only side in the tournament to win their previous knockout games in regulation time was the better of the two finalists and Ingwe struggled to create clear cut chances.

Head coach Jose Marcelo Ferreira had returned to the touchline after missing the two previous matches and it gave the side a morale booster with most of the second choice players seeing an opportunity to impress the boss.

Meddie Kagere, crowned the tourney’s top scorer had the earliest chance of the game, but he missed a header by inches when he rose to meet a Wellington Ochieng cross. Innocent Wafula also had a header go wide from Francis Kahata’s delivery.

Salim Abdallah came to AFC’s rescue in the 26th minute when he cleared a few centimeters off the line after Francis Kahata’s lob had beaten Ian Otieno.

Timothy Otieno had a superb opportunity in the 34th minute when he was picked out by Kagere inside the box, but he could not get a meaningful shot on the ball, his effort going wide.

Allan Katterega had Ingwe’s best chances of the game, but both went begging. In the 36th minute, his well struck shot from the edge of the box went straight to keeper Fredrick Odhiambo while five minutes later, a header from a Marcus Abwao cross went over.

Gor came from the half time break breathing fire in attack. George Odhiambo had a shot in the 48th minute saved by Otieno before Kenneth Muguna rattled the crossbar with a well struck 52nd minute freekick.

On the hour mark, the 15-time KPL champions broke the deadlock when Otieno paid up for all his missed chances in the first half, striking a low shot into the bottom right of Otieno’s goal.

Ten minutes later, AFC’s Duncan Otieno came close to an equalizer but his rasping shot from the edge of the box was saved by Odhiambo in the Gor goal.

With barely three minutes on the pitch, substitute Maloba made it 2-0 with a simple touch into the net from an Odhiambo cross. AFC were punished after losing the ball cheaply in attack and Gor initiated a counter which bore the goal.

Ndirangu then crowned off the afternoon with a well struck effort from the edge of the box, also after just having come in.

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 12 – Sofapaka FC head coach Sam Ssimbwa has confirmed the club is set to sign AFC Leopards skipper Bernard Mang’oli ahead of the second leg of the Kenyan Premier League.

However, AFC Leopards say they are yet to receive an official bid for the midfielder from Batoto ba Mungu, a club he played for on loan in the second half of the 2013 season.

“We have heard that they are interested but we are yet to get an official bid,” AFC Leopards’ Secretary General Oscar Igaida told Capital Sport.

Sofapaka boss Ssimbwa though said; “We will have Mang’oli, the AFC Captain for the second leg. The game he played yesterday (Super Cup) was his last.”

Batoto ba Mungu, the 2009 Kenyan Premier League champions have already been on the offensive this transfer window and have snapped up seven new players as Ssimbwa looks to guide them to their second Premier League title.

The Ugandan duo of Feni Ali and Umar Kassumba were the first to land at Sofapaka and the club has also brought in Willis Ouma and Hillary Echesa from Chemelil Sugar with both having previously turned out for the club.

Also joining as confirmed by Ssimbwa is Meshack Karani from Kakamega Homeboyz, left back Wesley Onguso from Western Stima and youngster Timothy Ludda from Thika United. Mang’oli will be their eighth signing of the June window.

“We have also brought in a few young talented boys from the lower leagues and the hard work now is ensuring they gel in as quick as possible,” said the Ugandan tactician.

The club has already released 12 players among them starters Paul Odhiambo and Moses Odhiambo. Paul’s contract ended and he chose to join reigning league champions Tusker FC.

Other players released from the club include Ugandans Wanok Pate and James Kasibante, Jaffer Gichuki, Edgar Waudo, Collins Kisuya, Augustine Etemesi, Dennis Wafula, John Walubuka and Mark Wasirwa while Ugandan Johnson Bagoole has been promoted to the coaching team to be the assistant coach of the under-20 team.

“I don’t think we will struggle as much with the new players because if you look at the ones that are leaving, only the two Odhiambos were regular starters. The others were not playing as much,” Ssimbwa noted.

He is pleased with the players he brought in and though he is cautious whether or not they will be strong title contenders, the coach is optimistic they can charge up for the crown.

“Only time will tell. We don’t know how much the other teams have signed and so we can’t say we are the strongest. Just a step at a time beginning with our first game this Sunday and we will see how good we are,” he added.

Meanwhile, after losing out on Paul Odhiambo who chose Tusker, Posta Rangers head coach Sammy Omollo will not be looking into another signing.

The mailmen have signed only one player, Kennedy ‘Agogo’ Otieno from Western Stima. Rwandese Jean Karekezi who was snapped up in January but couldn’t play due to paperwork has finally been cleared and will feature for them in the second leg.

“After getting Jean I think we will not look for another player. We had hoped to get Paul but well, he chose another path. I am happy with my squad and the two strikers coming in will strengthen us,” the tactician added.

Elsewhere, Ulinzi Stars will have a pool of close to 20 players to choose from ahead of the second leg after last week’s pass out parade at the Recruit Training School.

Head coach Benjamin Nyangweso said the players were selected from the inter unit recruit games and he will make his selection of a maximum of five from this week’s training.

Among the notable names who graduated from the intense military training include former AFC Leopards midfielder Bernard Ongoma and former Sony goalkeeper Timothy Odhiambo.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 12 – A high powered Confederation of African Football (CAF) delegation is in the country for a major inspection tour of venues to be used in next year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN), six months to the biennial showpiece.

The contingent is led by new CAF Second Vice President Constant Omari plus a host of departmental heads from the continental football body.

Also part of the delegation is Media Manager Mohamed Thabet, Marketing and TV Assistant Amira Mohamed, IT Director Tarek Abdalla, Competitions Deputy Director Khaled Atef, Service Deputy Director Madgaldin Abdelrazik as well as CHAN 2018 Assistant Tournament Director Wally Ismail.

On Monday, they are set to tour Eldoret, one of the three host towns for the tournament and its facilities. They will inspect the Kipchoge Keino Stadium which will host matches as well as Moi University School of Law and Eldoret Polytechnic which will be the training venues.

They will also tour the Boma Inn Hotel, the accommodation venue for teams and CAF delegates as part of preparations ahead of the main event.

On Tuesday, they will be in Machakos County where they will inspect the Kenyatta Stadium as well as Machakos Girls High School and Machakos University College, the training facilities. The proposed accommodation facility, Gelian Hotel will also be inspected.

The team will then fly to Meru on Wednesday via Isiolo.

They will inspect the accommodation facility, Alba Hotel, training venues Meru Teachers College and Meru Polytechnic as well as the Kinoru Stadium which opened its doors to its first match two weeks ago when Tusker hosted AFC Leopards in a KPL match.

Nairobi venues, Nyayo and Kasarani will be inspected on Thursday and Friday.

Kenyatta University, Kenya School of Monetary Studies, Postbank Sports Club, Nairobi School and the Utalii College will be the training venues to be inspected while the Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club, Safari Park Hotel, Laico Regency, Radisson Blue and Vila Rosa Kempinsky are the accommodation facilities.

Football Kenya Federation has insisted that Kenya will stage a wonderful event even with some of the venues running late in terms of renovation and refurbishment.

This is the fourth visit by the CAF top brass ahead of the competition. Former CAF Secretary General Hicham El Amrani was the first last year, just a few months after the completion of the last tournament in Rwanda.

It was followed up by a visit by former president Issa Hayatou and his vice Almamy Camara with the duo also holding talks with Vice President William Ruto.

The last visit was headed by first vice president Suketu Patel plus a host of other top ranking officials and they held talks with the Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario.

Meanwhile, national women football team Harambee Starlets will play United States of America Women Division One side FC Lynch Burg in a friendly match in Machakos on Thursday evening.

A squad of 30 players has already been called up to camp ahead of the game.

Gor’s Shakava relishing Everton challenge

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 12 – The prospect of facing some of the world’s top footballers, ones who you only get to watch on television and marvel at their talent and prowess is a motivation big enough for Gor Mahia defender Harun Shakava.

The former Kakamega Homeboyz man skippered K’Ogalo to their SportPesa Super Cup conquest with a 3-0 win in the final over arch rivals AFC Leopards, earning themselves a chance to face English Premier League side Everton FC in a friendly match on July 13.

“It is such a huge thing for us as players. The likes of Lukaku (Romelo), Barkley (Ross), Jagielka (Phil) are players we only watch on TV and now we have a chance of not only meeting them up close but playing against them. For any footballer, it is a huge thing,” the defender told Capital Sports from Dar es Salaam.

The Merseyside club, on their twitter handle confirmed they will be taking the sojourn to East Africa, being the first English Premier League club to play in Tanzania.

Shakava is excited ahead of the match, saying they deserve it after enduring a tough tournament in Dar es Salaam despite most of the key players missing.

“It feels great to have won the tournament. It was very tough but finishing without conceding a goal and scoring the highest number of goals really showed how hard we worked,” Shakava said.

They now hope they can replicate the same performance against Ronald Koeman’s men as it will also be a huge opportunity to audition themselves for a possible opportunity of playing European football.

“It is a big opportunity for us as players to play at such a big stage and against a very good team. We are motivated as players especially because it will be a chance to show we can match up with such kind of quality,” he said.

The defender added; “In football anything can happen. They might be stronger than us, but we will go there to compete. We will also want to show that we can beat one of the best.”

Meanwhile, head coach Jose Marcelo Ferreira who returned to the touchline in the final after missing the previous two games believes winning the tournament will charge them up enough to continue their domestic title.

K’Ogalo lead the standings with 27 points, only separated from defending champions Tusker FC on goal difference. The Brazilian coach hailed his charges for their gallant fight, saying he was impressed by their performance.

“It was a very good match because all teams came to the match to play. This is Gor Mahia and for us, everybody expects us to win and that is our mentality. We have to continue this way. This win has given us that motivation we need,” he added.

Meanwhile, AFC Leopards will need to strongly go back to the drawing board ahead of the league resumption as they remain winless in their last seven league matches.

Assistant coach Dennis Kitambi says they have picked lessons that will boost them ahead of the weekend tie against Mathare United.

“We lost because we didn’t start well in both halves and when Gor scored before us, it became hard. We have to go back home and re-strategize. We have to apologize to the fans because they expected us to win but we didn’t,” the Tanzanian who will deputize Romanian Dorian Marin said.

He however remains confident the club will rise back on top especially with a few new players set to join in.

Simbas up one spot in World Rugby standings

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 12 – Following the nervous 23-18 win over Uganda in the Elgon Cup on Saturday, the national Rugby 15’s side moved up one place to 25th in the latest World Rugby standings released on Monday afternoon.

The Simbas swap places with Portugal who fell to a 25-21 loss to Brazil in Sao Paulo over the weekend with New Zealand keeping their lead on the rankings while England, Australia, Ireland and South Africa round off the top five.

Kenya had dropped two places down a fortnight ago after their 30-29 test match loss to Germany in Nairobi.

Uganda’s Rugby Cranes, courtesy of the loss against Kenya drop one spot to 44th while Kenya’s Rugby Africa Gold Cup opponents Namibia also dropped one spot to 20th with Zimbabwe remaining static at 36th, and Tunisia 49th.

Kenya will shift their attention to the return leg of the Elgon Cup to be played in a fortnight in Nairobi, with the tie also doubling up as their opening Gold Cup match.

Simbas managed to bounce back from a possible scare against Uganda at the Legends Club in Kampala on Saturday, skipper Darwin Mukidza booting home two penalties towards the end as the boys pulled together for a win.

Mukidza says the team will now shift their attention to putting in some extra work for the return leg and the long journey in the Gold Cup.

“It was a very tough match but it was good we won. We now have to look at the next fixture and look at our errors and improve and also look at our strengths to polish,”

Looking back to the match Mukidza said;

“We had to clear out our errors and be disciplined in our defence. In the second half we tried to keep the ball more and that worked for us. We were anxious in the first half. I thank the fans for the support, we really did this for them and for those who came here we are really grateful.”

Head coach Jerome Paarwater was also impressed with the win, noting they required a tough match in order to prepare them for the season ahead and ultimately, next year’s World Cup qualifiers.

Red faced Harambee Stars touch down from Freetown

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 13 – National football team Harambee Stars jetted back to the country from Freetown, Sierra Leone early Tuesday morning, with the scars from the dampening 2-1 loss in their opening 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the hosts still visible on their faces.

The players walked off the arrivals lounge shortly after 6:30am, all with their faces damp, most rushing straight to their cars for a quick ride home to try and wipe away the disappointment from the West African sojourn.

Skipper Victor Wanyama who will now embark on a three-week holiday before returning to North London with his club Tottenham Hotspur was the first player to walk out of the airport, swiftly followed by striker Michael Olunga who scored the lone goal in Freetown.

Wanyama had all the figures of disappointment crammed on his face but speaking to Capital Sport briefly before he whisked away, the captain remained confident they will bounce back in their second group match against Ghana at home next year.

“We just didn’t take our chances,” the disappointed skipper said.

He added; “We need to be positive. Hopefully we can bounce back because the next game for us is do or die and hopefully we can get something. I believe we will win. We are playing at home and we need to fight for the victory. The weekend loss is now behind us. We need to look ahead.”

The captain has urged fans to rally behind the team despite the disappointment.

“It is what it is now. We need to look ahead and the fans should rally behind us and I still believe we can do something,” the midfielder added.

First Coach Stanley Okumbi who managed a smile in between the disappointment also decried the loss of chances, saying that was the sole reason the team could not pick maximum points or at worst a draw in West Africa.

“We didn’t play badly. We played good football but we could not score some few chances we created while the opponents used theirs. Had we converted even half of those chances, we would be talking something different now,” the tactician offered.

He added; “It is something that I have been telling the players. We need to convert the chances we get and this is one of the biggest things we will be working on before the next qualifier.”

He has also urged fans to accept the results, saying losing is part of the game and other giants were on the losing end as well over the weekend.

“We should accept the results as they came but I think for me we played well. I encourage my players despite the loss, we still have a chance of qualification,” the coach said.

He was also defensive of his squad selection especially having handed Kariobangi Sharks striker Massoud Juma a starting slot in the match, despite lacking prior national team experience.

He maintained he took the best fielding decisions in the match and remains optimistic results will pour in despite the loss putting to rest his 10-match unbeaten streak.

The loss leaves Kenya third on the group, only separated on goal difference from bottom side Ethiopia who were handed a 5-0 humiliation by log leaders Ghana in Kumasi. Stars’ next qualifier is in April 2018 against the Black Stars.

Most of the players will now embark on club duty while a few will be on short holiday before the new season begins.

Kenya among four countries to blame for CECAFA crisis – Musonye

CECAFA Secretary General Nicholas Musonye addresses the media in a past event PHOTO/Timothy Olobulu.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 13 – CECAFA Secretary General Nicholas Musonye has laid the blame for the crisis in East and Central Africa’s regional body firmly at the door of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.

A furious Musonye told the BBC that football administrators from the four nations needed to take a hard look at themselves.

He said dark clouds descended on CECAFA after the 2015 elections which saw the president of Sudan’s FA, Muatasim Gafe, take over as regional boss.

Since then CECAFA has failed to organize its two main annual competitions – the Club Championship and the Senior Challenge Cup for national teams.

“There is a lot of politics in CECAFA that is bringing all this confusion,” said Musonye, who oversees the interests of 12 nations.

He accused four countries of undermining progress and exacerbating the crisis by their attitude towards Gafe’s leadership.

“I’m in charge of 12 countries, all of them being equal but Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda think they’re more equal than others.

“The president of Sudan was elected president of CECAFA in an open and free election; these members decided that they cannot support the new president.

“CECAFA is not my company; I’m only their custodian as Secretary General. If they want to kill CECAFA, let them do it, it’s their baby, it’s their organisation.”

Musonye said the crisis in the governance of football in the region has also been a major factor in the decline in the fortunes of their teams.

“There is mediocrity in terms of organisation so they can never qualify [for the Africa Cup of Nations}.

“There is bad leadership in our zone which has been persistent for many years and this has really affected the promotion of football.

“Their mediocrity will continue as they watch other countries flourish in AFCON and other top competitions.

“Member associations of CECAFA don’t even pay their annual fees – they don’t pay participation fee either, they want to play for free.”

Kenya to send only 4 athletes to Youth Commonwealth Games

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 13 – Kenya will send only four athletes; two male and two females to the Youth Commonwealth Games in Nassau, Bahamas, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) has announced.

NOCK, mandated to oversee the Commonwealth Games other than their Olympic Games duties said the government has informed them funding will not be available for the championship which will be held between July 19 and 23.

This, NOCK say, is despite an earlier assurance by the government that funding will be available for the Youth Games.

“We have requested AK to identify the four athletes and one coach. This is not the first time the Youth Commonwealth Games is not being supported. We are nurturing talent and when they ignore youth then it means they are not being serious,” NOCK deputy treasurer Stephen arap Soi said on Tuesday afternoon.

The four athletes and two officials will be funded by the Commonwealth Games Foundation (CGF) as part of a support agreement with NOCK.

According to a letter from the government written on March 27 wielded by Soi flanked by Secretary General FK Paul, the Sports Ministry through Director of Administration Harun Komen confirmed they would cater for tickets and allowances for the selected athletes.

NOCK had in turn provided a list of 50 persons, 41 athletes and nine officials for the trip.

However, in another letter on June 2, the Sports Ministry said they would not be sponsoring the team as most of the budgetary allocation had been channelled to the World Under-18 Championships which will be held around the same time in Nairobi.

Soi, the man at the heart of the 2016 bungled Rio Olympic Games has gone on to accuse the Sports Cabinet Secretary of failing to support youth teams run by NOCK, going back to open the Pandora’s Box that was the Rio games, again squarely blaming Wario’s ministry.

There have been huge differences between the Olympics body and the ministry especially after Wario disbanded the body just a few days after the Rio games, though the same decision was overturned by the courts early this year.

The two have been in endless fights to clear their names from the Rio mess, each accusing the other of bungling the team’s management in the Brazilian capital.

Tight competition as Kenya select U18 team

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 14 – The team that will represent Kenya at next month’s World Under-18 Championship will be unveiled on Wednesday evening after the completion of a rigorous two day trials at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The trials will also double up as a selection field for athletes to represent Kenya at the African Youth Championships and the Youth Commonwealth Games as well.

Competition was stiff on day one of the trials with Athletics Kenya hoping to select a huge group of athletes especially for the field events as Kenya looks to bag as many medals as possible at home when the U-18 age cadre competitions holds its final edition.

On Tuesday, Brian Gichana of Nyanza South and Nicholas Leparon from Nairobi’s Riruta Secondary School booked a place in the team after registering qualifying times in the 400m hurdles during the opening day of trials yesterday.

Gichana led from the start, displaying admirable hurdling skills on the way to win the final in 53.18 seconds while Leparon managed to finish second stopping the clock in 53.26seconds after a spirited chase in the final 40 metres.

Third placed James Mucheru recorded a finishing time of 53.97 which was within the time cut for the competition but he was not selected into the team as only the first two across the line were getting tickets to the championship.

“I’m happy I made it but I know there are good sprinters and hurdlers from other countries who will come to Nairobi. I will train harder so that I win a medal for my country,” Gichana shyly said after winning the race.

None of the ten girls who participated in two 400m hurdles heats finished within qualifying time but they have a chance of lowering their times during Wednesday’s finals. Irene Akinyi of Nyamza South came closest to the 62.25 qualifying mark with her 62.47 winning time in heat one while Leah Jeruto of North Rift, winner in heat two could only muster a further 63.83.

In the U20 400m hurdles race, Yasin Kibet of Central Rift attained the qualifying time for African U20 championships set for Algeria. Kibet clocked 51:40 to claim victory ahead of Edwin Siele whose 53.83 was outside the required standard.

Elsewhere, Dominic Ndigiti of Kiendege Secondary School will represent the country in the 10,00m walk after winning way beyond the qualification marl, clocking 44:14.9 with the qualification mark at 47:00.

Samson, still panting from his hard work said he hopes to train harder before July 12 when the championship starts at Kasarani and is confident he can get Kenya a medal in the discipline.

Only one athlete will represent Kenya in the Africa U20 championships 10000m walk after the rest of the field were either disqualified or did not finish the race.

Earlier on, Edna Chebitok of Estate primary school in Keringet booked her place in today’s final of 1500m, leading a cabal of talented athletes in that field.

Lydia Cheptarus, Esther Borura and Sharine Chepkemei all made the cut from that heat and will duel with Rachel Nzangi, Macline Cherono and Janeth Chepkoech who also qualified from the subsequent heat.

Edward Zakayo from South Rift leads the pack in teh boys’ 3000m race at the World Youth Championship trials at the Nyayo National Stadium on June 14, 2017. PHOTO/Raymond Makhaya

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 14 – Kenya will field a total of 64 athletes when it hosts the final edition of the IAAF World Under-18 Championships from July 12 at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani as it seeks to go one better than the 2015 edition in Cali, Colombia in 2015 where they finished second overall.

Athletics Kenya Youth Committee Chairman Barnaba Korir has assured they have picked the strongest team and is confident that Kenya will scoop a huge harvest during the games.

“It has been a very rigorous process throughout the last two days of trials and we have picked a very strong team. We have three weeks to prepare and we will do our best to ensure everyone is in good shape and ready,” Korir told Capital Sport.

The selectors have kept their promise in ensuring Kenya throws in as many athletes as possible especially in the field events with an equal number of 12 boys and girls selected in various disciplines.

Emmaculate Chepkirui, the World Junior 5000m silver medalist from Bydgoszcz, Poland in 2016 will hope to get her first major championship gold as she leads the Kenyan team in the 3000m, having out-sprinted her opponents to win the trials in a time of 9:05.7, almost 40 seconds clear of the official entry standard.

The 17-year old who finished ninth at the junior level in the IAAF Kampala World Cross Country championships in March is confident she is in the right shape to get Kenya a medal and has promised to run a perfect race at Kasarani.

“I really wanted to get into this team and when I came in for the race, my target was to do my best and not look at anybody else. It was tough but I felt I was in very good shape and I am happy to have won,” the excited Kibori School student said after the race.

She added; “Now the hard work has just began and I will go back to work harder in training and ensure that when I race in Kasarani, I win a medal.”

She will be joined in the team by Beatrice Chebet who finished in a time of 9:07.00. All the nine athletes in the race clocked well within the qualification mark of 9:47.00 but only the top two earned the tickets to done the red and black Kenyan jersey.

In the corresponding boys’ race, Edward Zakayo, a form one student from Elgeyo Marakwet put up a spirited run in the final 200metres to pick the automatic ticket alongside Stanley Mburu.

Zakayo kept within the leading pack heading into the final lap of the race but burst into a battering final kick reminiscent of his idol David Rudisha, crossing the line ahead of Mburu who had pushed him to the edge.

The 17 year old who hails from the Loita Plains in Narok South District sunk to his knees after crossing the finish line, hands held high as he finally achieved a fete he had worked so hard for over the past two years.

“I feel like I am in Jerusalem right now. I am so joyful. I have always wanted a chance to wear that Kenyan jersey in an international competition and now I have it. I feel great. What drives me is that I want to fund my own education and athletics is a way of doing so,” an excited Zakayo, still panting from the grueling race told Capital Sport.

He is confident of raking in a gold medal for Kenya though he concedes it will not be easy especially with lurking competition from neighbors Ethiopia.

“Qualification is motivation enough. Now I want to go and work harder, work on my speed and ensure that come next month I will be in shape,” he added.

At the same time, George Manang’oi will have an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of his older brother Elijah Manang’oi after squeezing into the 1500m team following his second spot finish.

Manang’oi finished in a time of 3:44.4, just four microseconds behind the winner Dominic Kipkemoi. It was a tight race with third placed Jacob Kipkorir finishing at 3:44.5.

The young Manang’oi, just 17 years old has been slowly picking the tracks of his senior and participated in the Police Championships last month, managing to finish third in the semi finals.

Elsewhere, Nyanza South’s Mary Moraa will carry on her shoulders the weight of a double as she bears Kenya’s hopes in both the 100m and 200m after winning both events.

The team will get into camp on Sunday June 18 and they will be training at the Nyayo Stadium.

Meanwhile, Korir has told Capital Sport they employed stringent measures to ensure that only eligible athletes who fall within the required age bracket of 16, 17 years are selected into the team.

“We have thoroughly done background checks for these athletes and even now, we will continue vetting these athletes and if we find anyone who might have sneaked in, we will remove them immediately,” Korir confidently stated.

IAAF CEO Olivier Gers accompanied by LOC Chair Jackson Tuwei and CEO Michael Mwangi Muthee inspecting the laying of the Kasarani tartan track

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 14 – IAAF CEO Olivier Gers is this week in the Kenyan capital for a site visit ahead of next month’s IAAF World U18 Championships Nairobi 2017.

Accompanied by LOC Chair Jackson Tuwei and CEO Michael Mwangi Muthee, Gers visited the competition and training venues at the Moi International Sports Centre and was shown around Kenyatta University where the athletes will be accommodated.

After a slight delay to the installation of the new synthetic track at the stadium while the material was stuck in customs, work is now well under way and the LOC is confident the tracks will be ready in time for the championships on 12-16 July.

The LOC is also working to implement the necessary security measures to deliver a safe and secure environment for the athletes.

“A huge amount of work has gone into the preparation of these championships and I want to thank the organising committee and everyone in Nairobi and across Kenya for the work they have put in,” said Gers.

“The athletes will love competing in this beautiful stadium and I hope the fans will give them the loudest of cheers.

“We have the final push in the weeks ahead, finishing off, tidying up and making sure all the final elements are in place. It’s like a house; it almost takes longer to put the finishing touches on the house and to make everything right than to actually build it.”

Mwangi Mathee confirmed that the LOC is now approaching the final stages of the preparations.

“It has been like a fairy tale; we have seen it all,” he said. “But the most wonderful thing is that we are now heading to the final phase and that we can see the fruits of our labour and I am very proud of the team.

“I’d like the IAAF and the government of Kenya to make sure that the work and the legacy of the investment hasn’t been done in vain. We should look beyond 2017 and make Nairobi a sports centre.”

The IAAF World U18 Championships Nairobi 2017 will be the first global track and field championships to be held in Kenya. It will also be the final edition of the World U18 Championships as the IAAF’s focus will shift towards driving regional and continental competitions.

“What we want first to be remembered is the quality of competition,” said Gers.

“We want to make sure we leave behind a lasting legacy for athletics, for the country of Kenya and for the whole region. To have a vibrant, modern equipped stadium that can be reused in future championships is quite critical.”

The squad is awash with upcoming players and among those called up include goalkeepers Faruk Shikhalo from Posta Rangers and Gor Mahia’s Peter Odhiambo who are yet to make appearances for their clubs in the league.

Odhiambo however played for Gor in the SportPesa Super Cup where he was named the goalkeeper of the tournament after keeping three straight clean sheets while Shikhalo was a regular starter for Muhoroni Youth last season.

The third goalkeeper in the squad is Sofapaka’s Mathias Kigonya.

Two players will be dropped from the squad.

AK sceptical of athletes doubling up in London

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 15 – The Athletics Kenya Technical Committee will make a decision on whether athletes will double or not during the IAAF World Championships in August.

AK chief Jackson Tuwei said most of the concentration on doubling will be on the 10,000m and 5,000m as Kenya seeks to retain its seat on the throne as the world’s best athletics nation having finished top in Beijing, China in 2015.

“Kenya’s stature in middle long distance athletics does not allow for excuses so we want to get it right in London. Our technical team will advice on the best possible approach on this because we have athletes who can double up well and others who cannot.” Tuwei said.

A total of 60 athletes will be selected from a pool of 246 invited for the national trials on the 23rd and 24th of this month with the federation having earlier announced no wild cards will be given and only meriting and on form athletes will be selected.

The team could however benefit with additional numbers in the men’s 800m and 3000m steeplechase when IAAF releases the quota for every country.

All gold medallists from previous world championships are given byes to defend their titles while Diamond Trophy winners in the 2016 Diamond League season are also given straight routes to world championships.

The top three finishers from the national trials will earn automatic slots while in the men 800m, David Rudisha who won gold in Beijing and Ferguson Rotich who lifted the Diamond Trophy last year will have direct tickets from the IAAF.

The same case applies in 3000m steeplechase where Ezekiel Kemboi won in China two years ago while Conseslus Kipruto lifted the Diamond Trophy last year.

Kenya will be out to defend its world title from China having won seven gold, six silver and three bronze medals.

The country is however, squarely in the sporting world’s gaze having promptly entered the less fancied World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) watch list due to multiple doping offenses by the country’s leading lights.

Athletes, as announced by AK a fortnight ago, will have to undergo rigorous doping tests with the country coming increasingly under the spotlight and still under the WDA shortlist.

Athletes will be subjected up to five doping tests before being confirmed for London with three in-competition tests and two out of competition tests.

“ADAK has worked hard but they are yet to get all the athletes. Hopefully by the time we go to London every one of them shall have submitted to the mandatory tests. ADAK has liaised with their contemporaries in other countries including Japan, USA and elsewhere to test Kenyan athletes residing overseas.” Tuwei said.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 15 – The 2017 edition of the GOtv Shield will be played in two different zones to reduce the travel distance and cost to ease the financial burden on lower tier teams, the Football Kenya Federation has announced.

In that respect, all the lower tier teams will begin their campaign at home.

“This is the tournament that allows smaller teams to mix it up with big teams. We decided so that we are able to give small teams a chance of playing and progressing in the tournament, we should zone them and let them play their first matches at home,” FKF Chief Executive Officer Robert Muthomi said.

He added; “The biggest problem we have in Kenyan football especially with teams in the lower tiers is the issue of finances. We have tried to make it cheaper for the teams to participate by zoning to reduce their travel.”

Meanwhile, a cloud of uncertainty hangs around the sponsorship of the tournament with title holders GOtv entering into the final year of the five-year partnership initially signed in 2013.

“We have started talks with them but at the moment, I don’t know what lies ahead, but we will see,” FKF President Nick Mwendwa told Capital Sport.

GOtv General Manager Simon Kariithi is also uncertain whether or not the deal will be reviewed.

“We are still in discussion from our group whether there is a possibility of further discussion. Of course there is a financial burden and the company is realigning to see what other assets can we add to our platform to benefit our products,” Kariithi said.

He added; “At the moment we don’t have a green-light on whether we can go ahead but the options are still open by end of the year we will know. “

Under World Rugby regulation 17.19.10(c), the sanction was extended from 24 to 34 weeks to take into account the off-season period when there are no matches where the defendant is scheduled to play.”

Lastly, Thika RFC have been banned from using their home venue for 12 weeks following an incident in which a match official was attacked during a KRU Championship match in March.

The ban was enforced following the team’s failure to uphold the spirit of the Laws of the Game (in breach of clause 1.2 of the Code of Conduct), promote the reputation of the Game and prevent it from coming into disrepute (in breach of clause 1.9 of the Code of Conduct) by not taking action about the incident on the alleged perpetrators and adversely affected the Game of Rugby (in breach of clause 1.14 of the Code of Conduct).

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 16 – National 800m champion Margaret Nyairera failed in her third bid to beat Olympic champion Caster Semenya when the two lined up together at the Oslo leg of the IAAF Diamond League on Thursday night.

The race finished in the exact identical fashion it did in Rio de Janeiro in August last year during the Olympic Games with Burundian Francine Niyonsaba coming in second while Nyairera finished third.

The Kenyan had finished second in both occasions she has met Semenya in the Diamond League this season in Doha and Eugene and had hoped to pick one over the South African this time round.

However, Nyairera faded away in the final 100m of the race with Semenya showing her superb final kicks to pip Niyonsaba in the final 50 metres of the race.

Semenya was lurking behind Nyairera and Niyonsaba at the bell with the Burundian bolting out at the home straight. However, Semenya took on the duo in the final stretch and Nyairera had to dig deep to pick the third spot.

Semenya clocked 1:57.79 while Niyonsaba timed 1:58.18 and Nyairera 1:59.17.

In the other races of the night, World 1500m silver medalist Elijah Manang’oi was shocked by Briton Jake Wightman who won the race with a personal best time of 3:34.17 with Manang’oi finishing second in 3:34.30.

“I can’t believe it still. I had never expected to win this, so this was a great step in the right direction. I expected it to go faster here, so I didn’t run so fast that I thought, but a personal best is great,” the Briton said after the race.

Manang’oi who finished fourth in Rome in the 800m found it tough against Wightman despite having shown early intentions by sticking close to the pace setters in the opening two laps of the race.

Wightman pulled away in the final 100m and despite Manang’oi putting in a spirited run to catch up with him, the Briton ecstatically crossed the line first.

The only winner of the night in the Norwegian city was African steeplechase champion Norah Jeruto who won her first career Diamond League race with a photo finish over Ethiopia’s Assefa Sofia.

Jeruto clocked 9:17.27, seven micro seconds ahead of Assefa. She dug deep into her energy reserves in the final 50m of the race and stuck out her head and arms over Assefa who had attempted to elbow her out as they approached the finish line.

“It was a very important race for me and also a win. I will have it tough at Kenyan trials to make the team. But God willing I will get it. We are Kalenjins always fighting,” Jeruto exclaimed after the race.
