NAIROBI, Kenya, June 29 – KCB RFC head coach Curtis Olago says his squad intends to learn on how to improve on their tight play and set pieces during their 10-day camp in South Africa.

The squad of 29 players and five members of technical bench departed the country to South Africa on Thursday and Olago who guided the side to the Kenya Cup and Enterprise title believes his squad will not be the same after the camp.

“We are great full for this opportunity and the sponsor for believing in developing players rather than buying players. We thank God for the stellar season we have had last season. We are going to South Africa to learn and with the young squad that we have picked for the tour, we expect them when they come back to be different people in terms of High Performance,” Olago said before the team departed for Cape Town.

The travelling party comprises of captain Peter Waitere, fly half Hamed Shabani, Nick Ongeri, centre winger James Kilonzo, half back Marlin Akoolo, back row Rocky Aguko, and full back Joshua Macharia among other players.

“KCB Bank is very proud of the players for the brilliant season, we believe that the trip will give the technical bench and players the much needed skills to challenge for top honours next season,” KCB Director of Logistics James Asiko Owiro said.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 29 – Winners of the Safaricom Chapa Dimba football tournament will have the prestigious opportunity of training and spending one week with Harambee Stars captain and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama in London, United Kingdom next year.

The tournament, sponsored by the telecommunication company will involve boys and girls aged between 16 and 20 years and will kick off on September 2 with the winners also walking home with Sh1mn

Wanyama who is the tournament’s brand ambassador said he was excited with the venture that will see more grass-root talent identified and has urged the sponsors to ensure the partnership goes on for a long time.

“I think this is a great thing for our country and I am pleased to be part of it. Grass-root is where the real talent is and I know from this place the next big star will be found,” Wanyama said as the tournament was launched on Thursday afternoon at the Railways Club in Nairobi.

Safaricom which has pumped Sh100mn into the tourney makes a return to football after five years, having stopped sponsoring the Sakata Ball tournament in 2012 following differences with the then Football Kenya Federation (FKF) officials.

“When we started having issues last time we were here with Sakata Ball, I made a decision because we are an organization which stands with principles and transparency. But when the new office came in and we talked, then I thought something would happen,” Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore said.

FKF will run the tournament on behalf of Safaricom with registration opening on July 1 across all the eight regions, closing at the end of the month.

Federation boss Nick Mwendwa has promised Safaricom they will run the competition professionally and has urged more corporates to come into football.

“One of the promises we made when we came into office is that we would bring Safaricom back. I am glad to stand here today and see them back in the game. This is a different regime and we want to do things differently,” Mwendwa stated.

He added; “Football worldwide is all about the youth and we want to give the youth of this country a chance from all over the country.”

“Football is one of the most unifying tools in the world and we aim to give our youth an opportunity to grow and exhibit their talent. We are glad to be back in football as we continue strengthening our commitment to supporting sports in the country,” Collymore noted.

Team registration and verification for the tournament will take place in July and August 2017. The matches will start with group stages in September 2017, followed by the knockout stages and regional finals, with the grand finale set for March 2018.

KPL Chief Executive Officer Jack Oguda has said in the next two weeks, a financial plan on what each team will be taking home off the Sh36mn bounty will be disclosed

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 30 – The Kenyan Premier League and Football Kenya Federation will on Tuesday unveil Bamba Sport, a subsidiary of Radio Africa Group Limited as the league’s new broadcast partners in a six month deal worth Sh36mn.

The league has been off air from March after South African broadcaster SuperSport terminated their contract with the league managers but the games will now be back on the screen, at least locally.

“Basically, we have sealed the deal and the only thing remaining for us is to formalize everything and officially sign, which will happen on Tuesday. This is a six month deal and we will review at the end of the season with the option of a long term deal,” KPL chairman Ambrose Rachier said.

Though the prominent city lawyer who also doubles up as the Gor Mahia chief failed to disclose details of the deal, Capital Sport has learnt the it is roughly around Sh36mn.

Bamba Sport has been screening National Super League matches live and they will now delve into the big boy market.

“It is something great for our league because sponsors will now feel like they are getting value for their money. We have been working on this for some time now and we are glad it has worked out,” Rachier added.

KPL Chief Executive Officer Jack Oguda has said in the next two weeks, a financial plan on what each team will be taking home off the Sh36mn bounty will be disclosed. He said the league body’s accounts team will make the necessary balances to ensure each team walks home with good cash.

He has also noted they expect to sign a bigger deal next year that will not only include a Free To Air (FTA) partner which Bamba have already snapped up, but also a Pay TV partner.

“We have appointed an agency which will look at exploiting all our broadcast rights and though we don’t have any imminent partners at this moment, I am confident by next season we will have made remarkable progress,” Oguda said.

The league managers had their Annual general meeting today where apart from the disclosure of the new TV deal, KPL changed their MoU to incorporate the two extra teams that were a result of the league’s expansion as part of the shareholders.

Tom Juma ‘not afraid’ of AFC Leopards responsibility

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 30 – Stand-in AFC Leopards head coach Tom Juma says he is not afraid of the huge responsibility ahead of him as he takes over the job with the 13-time champions on caretaker basis until the end of the season.

The former Kenyan international who has previously worked with Administration Police and Muhoroni Youth says he is optimistic the club will rise despite finding them struggling at 12th spot on the Kenyan Premier League table.

“Pressure will always be there and you don’t have to be afraid of anything. It is a big challenge and as a coach, I love big challenges. I will do my best to ensure that this team performs because they have the ability to do so. I know we are not in a good position at the moment, but we will pick,” Juma said.

He takes over from Dorian Marin who might go down as the shortest serving Ingwe coach ever, having led the team for only two weeks. Differences between the Romanian and fellow technical bench members as well as some players saw him leave the club barely before signing a contract.

Leopards have not won in eight domestic league matches and Juma knows only too well the expectations on them when they face Kariobangi Sharks on Saturday afternoon in Nakuru.

“This is a big club and a big brand and it comes with demands. The best thing is to ensure the boys play relaxed and that is the biggest thing we have worked on this week. We have tried to ease the pressure off them and insisted we have to play relaxed,” Juma added.

Ingwe comes up against a high flying Sharks that has been unbeaten over the same number of matches they have been struggling to get wins in.

Juma has his own measure of respect for the Premier League new boys, but insists he will be bumping his side up for three points.

“The league is very tough this time and no team should be taken for granted. Kariobangi Sharks is a good team having watched them and their run speaks as much. But we need to go out there to get a win at all costs because it is high time we start winning matches,” added the coach.

AFC Leopards will be without winger Allan Katterega who is nursing an ankle injury while left back Marcus Abwao is out with a knee injury, both picked up during the Super Cup in Dar es Salaam three weeks ago.

But Juma and his technical bench will have a huge field to choose from with all but one of their new signings training with the club for the entire week. Burundian Alex Kitenge arrived in the country early Friday afternoon and will join training next week.

“They have shown some good competitiveness in training and I think all of them have shown that they are ready to start on Saturday. We have a very good squad and that gives me confidence that we will do great things,” added Juma.

AFC re-signed midfielder Musa Mudde from Bandari while Keziron Kizito touched down from Ugandan side Vipers, Victor Majid from Chemelil Sugar, former Thika United striker Ray Odhiambo and Aziz Okaka from Ushuru.

The big departures are that of midfielder Bernard Mang’oli who has joined Sofapaka while striker Mungai Kiongera did not renew his contract.

Ghanaian forward Gilbert Fiamenyo will miss the remainder of the second leg with injury.

Political environment will not interfere with World U18- Nkaiserry

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 1 – Internal Security Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Nkaiserry has assured that the ongoing political activity in the country ahead of the August General Elections will not interfere with Kenya’s hosting of the IAAF World Under-18 championships beginning July12-16 at the Kasarani Stadium.

The Championships which will be in its final edition will come slightly a month to the National Polls August 8, a time when the country will be flooded with political campaigns thus putting all the security organs on their toes.

Nkaiserry, speaking this morning after conducting an inspection at the championships venue as well as the accommodation facility at the Kenyatta University, said there are enough personnel within the police service to secure both the campaigns and the global event.

“We have enough resources in terms of personnel to secure the country not only for the championships. We are ready. We have put in place a good program of securing this country. Since 2013 we have recruited over 30,000 police officers so we have enough to take care of the campaigns and to take care of these championships,” Nkaiserry told Capital Sport.

The Cabinet Secretary, himself a retired Army General from the Kenya Army has assured that security will be a first priority especially after a number of countries pulled out with uncertainty.

Nkaiserry led a high powered government delegation on a tour of the venues and he was impressed with the work put in especially with the athletes’ village at the Kenyatta University which the government has spent Sh2bn on.

“Looking at how it was the first time and now, there is so much work that has been done and I am happy. The only concern I have is the cleanliness, both at the hostels and the competition venue at Kasarani. I have instructed them to look into it and I am confident because we have all the contractors on ground,” he said.

The team will make a second visit at both venues on Monday for a final dry run and the track is expected to be opened on Wednesday where sprint athletes are expected to start their training, according to Local Organizing Committee Chair Mwangi Muthee.

To avoid interference, the stadium will be closed for four days from Sunday where marking of the already laid blue Mondo tartan track will commence.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario, who was also part of the delegation, noted that work has moved on so fast and with only 10 days before the curtains open on the event, he is confident the finer details will be completed by the end of the week.

“As government we have invested a lot. We have worked tirelessly and now we are asking Kenyans to come out and fill this stadium. We have learnt a lot and this experience will be taken into the future and the future is for Kenya to hold the World Championships and bigger things,” Wario said.

Kenya is set to host its second biggest ever event after the 1987 All Africa Games with over 131 countries expected to converge in the capital for the last ever edition of the Under-18 Championship.

Meanwhile, Wario has also said plans are being mooted to ensure the Sh2bn project at Kenyatta University including the hostels and training venues will be put into good use as part of the legacy plans after the Championships.

The CS said plans are in top gear in collaboration with the University officials to turn it into a high performance training centre, with the IAAF said to be hugely interested in the program as well.

At the same time, athletes will start arriving in the country on Saturday and they will be training at the University training track as well as the Kasarani training arena. The competition venue will only be reserved for sprint athletes.

Athletics Kenya meanwhile has said 40 retired athletes have been selected to officiate during the championships and they are currently undergoing training. Also, AK will invited legends and former athletes to the championship to inspire Kenya’s next generation of stars.

Omunuk hits double as Nakumatt shock Sofapaka

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 1 – Ugandan Robert Omunuk scored a goal in either half as Kenyan Premier League new boys Nakumatt FC came from a goal down to shock 2009 champions Sofapaka 2-1 at the Ruaraka Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Mathias Kigonya’s rare error five minutes to half time had drawn Nakumatt back into the game after Ezekiel Okare had given Batoto ba Mungu an early lead. Omunuk hit his second 15 minutes from time to stop the high flying Sofapaka.

Sam Ssimbwa’s new look side only had two surviving members from the first leg, keeper Mathias Kigonya and central defender Jonathan Mugabi.

They were the better starters, still upped with the confidence of their two last wins, a 2-0 result against 15-time champions Gor Mahia followed up by a 9-1 mauling of Silver Bullets in the GOtv Shield last weekend.

As early as the fourth minute, Sofapaka had asked the first question with Wesley Onguso laying in a cross from the right after his initial attempt from the corner was blocked, but Umar Kassumba headed over.

Nakumatt had their first opportunity in the 11th minute with Peter Nzuki forcing a great save off Kigonya after some good play from the visitors saw Aswani set up his skipper for the shot.

Sofapaka were commanding most of the possession with the midfield pairing of new signing Bernard Mang’oli and the experienced Hillary Echesa doing well to win and distribute the ball.

For all their early command, Sofapaka were gifted with the opener on the quarter hour mark when Ezekiel Okare made the most of a misjudgment from keeper Sammy Okinda to nod home a long through from Wesley Onguso.

A relaxed Sofapaka now took crisp command of the game using the pace of Kassumba on the right and Timothy Ludda on the left to open up the Nakumatt defense, but the final call when it mattered most was never up to scratch.

Nakumatt, relentless in their search for an equalizer were gifted five minutes to the break when Ugandan Omunuk was gifted with the easiest of goals tapping in to an empty net after keeper Kigonya blundered in handling a cross from Nicholas Mejja on the right.

Nakumatt almost went to the break one up but Aswani saw his header from an Omunuk corner come off the crossbar while defender Eugene Ambulwa’s attempt with an overhead from the rebound going over.

Just a minute into the second half, Feni Ali thought he had given Sofapaka the lead again when he tapped in from close range but he was flagged offside after rushing to meet the ball spilled by the keeper from a Robert Aloro freekick.

-Second Half-

Sofapaka had started stronger again and they had another decent opportunity in the 57th minute with Ali once again showing his prowess with a well taken shot from the edge of the box which flew wide.

Nakumatt all this while were patient and waited for the right opportunity to pounce and it presented itself in the 75th minute when Omunuk simply tapped in from a Mejja cross after the Sofapaka backline went sleeping.

Sofapaka made attacking changes bringing in Meshack Karani and Mohammed Kilume.

Karani twice came close, first with an effort from close range while his second attempt with a freekick from range went inches wide.

Kariobangi Sharks winger Mathew Odongo Tayo takes on AFC Leopards midfielder Victor Majjid in a Kenyan Premier League match at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru on July 1, 2017

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 1 – AFC Leopards’ woes continued on Saturday evening when they suffered their fifth loss in nine Kenyan Premier League (KPL) games, going down 2-0 to Kariobangi Sharks at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.

Goals from either half by Ebrimah Sanneh and Mathew Odongo Tayo gave the KPL newcomers a huge lift after drawing three consecutive games, the result taking them to fourth on the log while AFC Leopards dipped to 13th.

In other results on Saturday, Muhoroni Youth picked up vital three points on the road with a 2-1 win over Western Stima at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu, lifting them up to 15th In the log while Stima sunk back to the relegation zone, one place up bottom.

At the Sudi Stadium in Bungoma, visiting Thika United played out with a barren draw against Nzoia Sugar.

Kariobangi Sharks players celebrate one of their two goals against AFC leopards in a Kenyan Premier League match at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru on July 1, 2017

In Nakuru, AFC’s new boss Tom Juma had hoped to finally break the side’s eight-match winless streak against an on form Sharks, but the side could not turn the tables.

Juma had given a debut to midfielder Victor Majjid signed from Chemelil Sugar, pairing up in midfield alongside Duncan Otieno while Musa Mudde, Keziron Kizito and Ray Omondi, the other new boys in the team starting from the bench.

Sharks, who have been on a rhythm of sorts, were faster off the blocks with their good interchange of play troubling Leopards. However, they couldn’t show much for their possession on the business end of the pitch.

In the second half, William Muluya’s side came back with more intent and they needed just five minutes to show what they wanted.

Gambian striker Sanneh stepped up to open his Sharks account with an easy tap in from close range after picking out a pass from Tayo. AFC were caught off their bellies with Elli Asieche starting off the move in midfield.

Tayo almost grabbed the second three minutes later when he cut inside, but his shot was too weak for Ian Otieno to calmly collect.

AFC who have not scored a goal in their last four KPL games tried to rise back and get an equalizer, but they were stopped by a resolute Sharks defense.

Juma made changes, bringing off Samuel Ndung’u for new boy ray Odhiambo while Whyvonne Isuza was also rested for another new signing, Ugandan Kezziron Kizito.

Sharks continued to scavenge at the Leopards goal in search of a second and Ian Otieno was forced to quickly react and pick the ball after initially spilling it from a stinging freekick by Ovellah Ochieng.

They finally got the much needed second pressure relieving goal when Tayo’s freekick was deflected off the wall.

The Mathare based Nets led 26-7 at half time as they dominated the Warriors in a brilliant display of high intensity basketball at Africa Nazarene University.

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 1- Ten points from Lovings Otieno helped Slum Dunk Nets beat Family Kenya Warriors 37-16 in the Junior NBA Finals on Saturday.

The Mathare based Nets led 26-7 at half time as they dominated the Warriors in a brilliant display of high intensity basketball at Africa Nazarene University.

Otieno, who was the game’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), and team mate Thomas Achaga combined well with the rest of the team as they caught the Warriors countless times on the fast break to score points at will.

“We knew that if we played a fast paced game we would win, and it started with our defence,” said Nets coach Sylvester Ndindi.

“They (Warriors) didn’t have a very good point guard. The moment he crossed into our half, we were on him and cleverly anticipated where he would pass the ball and within a short time, we were already above ten points,” he added.

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 1- Ten points from Lovings Otieno helped Slum Dunk Nets beat Family Kenya Warriors 37-16 in the Junior NBA Finals on Saturday.

Warriors failed to replicate their league form and struggled to sustain any ball possession in the first quarter that finished 16-5 in the Nets favour.

Ndindi had special praise for Otieno who he credited for his work ethic and commitment to the sport.

“Lovings has been incredible. He’s a very hardworking boy and doesn’t miss training. Even when he’s alone on the court, he still does the same drills that he was taught days before,” said Ndindi.

Saturday’s final was the culmination of three and a half months of Under 14 boys’ basketball which saw 30 local school teams taking part.

Each school team represented one of the NBA teams and played their games in corresponding NBA team-branded jerseys.

The Nairobi league structure also mirrored the NBA’s with the teams divided into the Eastern and Western Conferences with the top eight from each conference qualifying for the playoffs.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 1 – Sofapaka FC, the 2009 Kenyan Premier League champions were the busiest in the just closed June transfer window, bringing in a whooping 13 new players as head coach Sam Ssimbwa moulds the side to challenge for their second ever league title.

Ssimbwa believes he has raked in players he knows will play an influential role in the title campaign and has warned opponents they should be wary of his side.

“We have a good team and so far we have played three games, I am impressed with what I have seen. We are only working to ensure we play as a unit because most of these players have not played together before,” Ssimbwa told Capital Sport.

Of his 13 new recruits, he has brought in three from his native Uganda; defender Rodgers Aloro from the saints as well as forwards Umar Kassumba (SC Villa) and Feni Ali (URA).

In total, the June mini-transfer window has seen 15 foreigners come in, 10 from Uganda, two each from Tanzania and Burundi and one from Rwanda.

Apart from Sofapaka, Kakamega Homeboyz and Muhoroni Youth are the other clubs which were busy with new signings. Muhoroni, under new coach Gilbert Selebwa have brought in 11 new players, most of them from the lower leagues while Homeboyz have brought in eight.

At Homeboyz, head coach Mike Mururi has re-united with his former player at Chemelil Jonathan Mwaniki while the club has also snapped up former Kenyan international Collins Kisuya from Sofapaka and forward John Avire on loan from Bandari.

Bandari have also signed eight new players and among the highlights, the Dockers have brought in Field Cosmas from Tanzanian side African Lyon and Ivan Kiweewa from Saints FC in Uganda.

The club has also snapped up Gor Mahia defender Bernard Odhiambo who will be on a year-long loan spell in search of play time having suffered with limited action on the pitch since joining from Nakuru All Stars two years ago.

AFC Leopards, a side traditionally known for their hiring and firing prowess have gone for six new faces. Burundian Alex Kitenge joins on a six month loan deal from his Atletico Olympic in Bujumbura while they have also signed Keziron Kizito, a midfielder from Vipers SC in Uganda.

Their arch rivals Gor Mahia have been quiet, just as they have always been in the mini-window, bringing only two players from Nzoia Sugar. Defender Joachim Ochieng and Boniface Omondi will now don the green and white of K’Ogalo.

Other notable transfers sees former AFC Leopards and Western Stima defender Jackson Saleh join Nakumatt FC while there have been loan extensions for forward Clinton Kisiavuki from FC Talanta and Jack Bruno from AFC Leopards.

Despite losing three of their key first team players in midfielder Hillary Echesa, right back Willis Ouma (Sofapaka) and Victor Majjid (AFC Leopards), Chemelil has not sprung into panic mode and have brought in four new players. Benjamin Chaka re-unites with his former coach Juma Abdallah after signing from KCB while journeyman Moses Arita joins the side from Western Stima.

Chepkoech storms to victory as Jebet picks injury in Paris

PARIS, France, July 2 – Olympic champions Ruth Jebet and Omar McLeod, who arrived in Paris talking in terms of world records in their respective 3000m steeplechase and 110m hurdles events, found life had other plans for them at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in the Stade Charlety as both ended up limping away with injuries incurred in the course of their races.

Jebet, who had hoped to improve upon the world record of 8:52.78 she had set at the Meeting de Paris last year in the Stade de France, lost all hope of that with a moment of misjudgement at the water jump with just over three laps remaining, eventually struggling home in fourth place, in 9:10.95, in a race won by Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech in 9:01.69.

At the point where she fell, the 20-year-old Jebet was poised on the shoulder of Chepkoech and looked good for a win, even if the windy conditions were making it unlikely that she would be re-writing the record books on this occasion.

Thereafter it looked as if her 18-year-old training partner, Kenya’s Celliphine Chespol – a strangely similar figure to her, small and powerful, with short hair – would move through to win as she had at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Eugene, where she won with a world U20 record of 8:58.78, the second fastest of all time, despite her own water jump drama as she temporarily dislodged a shoe.

But Chepkoech, fourth at the Olympics and second at the IAAF Diamond League meetings in Doha and Eugene, held on to claim the win, with Kenya’s world champion Hyvin Kiyeng moving through for second place in 9:06.00, and Chespol settling for third in 9:07.54.

Jebet finished just ahead of USA’s Olympic bronze medallist Emma Coburn, who clocked 9:11.08 before limping heavily from the track.

“My aim was to run 9.00 but the wind was too strong and my body was not moving,” said Chepkoech. “In London, I think the main opponents will be my Kenyan teammates. Of course we will cooperate, but it will be a big fight too.”

A dramatic finish in the men’s 3000m saw two of the world’s most talented middle-distance runners – Ethiopia’s 19-year-old world indoor champion Yomif Kejelcha and Kenya’s 21-year-old Ronald Kwemoi, winner at two IAAF Diamond League meetings already this season – charge for the line.

But neither could resist the final burst of Kejelcha’s 23-year-old compatriot Muktar Edris, who crossed first in a personal best of 7:32.31. Kwemoi took second in 7:32.88, with the leggy Kejelcha clocking 7:33.37.

Olympic triple jump champion Christian Taylor underlined his position as favourite for another big gold this summer as he won with a second-round best of 17.29m, ahead of the compatriot who took silver behind him in Rio and won last weekend’s US Championships – at which Taylor made a token appearance – in a personal best of 17.91m, Will Claye, who managed a best of 17.18m here.

-Men’s 800m-

Botswana’s 2012 Olympic silver medallist Nijel Amos, still seeking form this season, appeared to find it as he rounded the final bend in the 800m and held off the challenge of three top Kenyans to win in a season’s best of 1:44.24.

Kipyegon Bett was second in 1:44.36, ahead of Ferguson Rotich, with a season’s best of 1:44.37, and Robert Biwott, also with a season’s best of 1:45.05.

The concluding event of the evening, the men’s 200m, went to Turkey’s Ramil Guliyev, who clocked 20.15 to finish ahead of Churandy Martina of the Netherlands, who recorded a season’s best of 20.27, and Rasheed Dwyer of Jamaica, third in 20.45.

Hassan holds off Kenya’s Kipyegon in Paris

PARIS, France, July 2 – The women’s 1500m provided the seventh IAAF Diamond League meeting of the season with a full-on charge for the line by two of the world’s finest athletes, with Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands holding on steadfastly to a lead that was challenged all the way round the final bend and down the finishing straight by Kenya’s Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon.

On a blustery night in the elegant Stade Charlety – new home to the Meeting de Paris after its years in the vast bowl of the Stade de France – Hassan, who heads this year’s world list with 3:56.14, had the strength to take maximum points on the road to the final.

She clocked 3:57.10, the third fastest time seen this year, with Kipyegon second in a season’s best of 3:57.51 ahead of Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia, who claimed third place in a personal best of 3:59.55 ahead of Poland’s Angelika Cichocka, whose 4:01.61 was also a personal best.

“It was very difficult – I think I pushed it too much from the beginning,” said Hassan. “This win is very important to me because this was a very strong field, so the victory is fantastic. It also gives me confidence, which everybody needs before the World Championships in London.”

The judgement to move this meeting to the more intimate surrounds of the 20,000-capacity Charlety Stadium – built in 1938 and elegantly modified before hosting the 1994 IAAF Grand Prix final – proved inspired.

The stadium was not packed out but the atmosphere was terrific, and late evening sunlight after a day of downpour seemed a fitting reward for the organisers.

The men’s pole vault, as one might expect, was a huge focus of interest given the presence of national treasure Renaud Lavillenie, only now getting into his full run-up after a winter in which he had to overcome some troublesome injuries.

In what turned out as another fascinating tactical battle, he had to give best again to the US vaulter who beat him at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Shanghai, and who won last weekend’s US Championships with his first six-metre jump, Sam Kendricks.

In their pre-event press conference, Kendricks said Lavillenie always asked him, jokingly, what height he would be coming in at, as he knew he would always start at the first and lowest option.

The same pattern obtained here, as Kendricks ticked off first-time clearances at 5.37m, 5.52m, 5.62m and 5.72m. The Frenchman, meanwhile, took the opposite strategy, coming in at 5.62m, which he cleared first time, and then passing to 5.77m.

But after two failures, Lavillenie, in dayglo pink, had to clear his third attempt for his gamble to work out – and the pressure on him increased as the man who had taken bronze behind his silver at the Rio Olympics achieved 5.77m on his third attempt.

Lavillenie, on this occasion, was unable to rise to the challenge, and Kendricks rounded off his night by clearing 5.82m before retiring after what was a potentially telling victory.

“Tonight I feel very frustrated,” said Lavillenie. “I am not here in Paris for this kind of result. But strong wind was a problem all through the competition. With these conditions, it’s very hard to perform.”

Germany’s Olympic javelin champion Thomas Rohler admitted on the eve of the competition that wind was the one thing he found difficult when it came to competition.

That may have lessened the surprise that the man who landed his third and fourth 90-metre-plus throws in Ostrava on Wednesday night could only manage third place here with 87.23m, as fellow German Johannes Vetter won with 88.74m, ahead of the Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch, who equalled his personal best with 88.02m.

It was business as usual in the men’s high jump as Mutaz Essa Barshim, who heads this year’s world list with 2.38m, secured victory with a first-time clearance of 2.35m that proved beyond any rival on the night.

Up until that point Ukraine’s Bogdan Bondarenko had been leading, thanks to Barshim’s one foul before clearing 2.32m.

And while the 2013 world champion was unable to go higher, his faultless progress to that point after making a late start to the season at last month’s IAAF Diamond League meeting in Oslo will doubtless produce growing confidence.

“Everything is going according to plan, and my coach is very satisfied,” said Barshim, who despite being second on the world all-time list behind world record-holder Javier Sotomayor is still seeking his first outdoor global title.

Sadly there was no 25th birthday present for Italy’s European champion Gianmarco Tamberi, attempting to get back to competitive mode after the serious ankle injury he suffered on the eve of last year’s Olympic Games.

Tamberi, who has jumped 2.18m and 2.20m respectively in his first two competitions this year, started at his season’s best height here but could not clear it.

Jamaica’s Olympic 100m and 200m champion Elaine Thompson, who confirmed here yesterday that she would only be doing the shorter sprint at this year’s World Championships, produced the goods, winning in 10.91.

Thompson was pushed to the line by Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josee Ta Lou, who finished second in a season’s best of 10.96 ahead of Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare, who also clocked a season’s best of 11.09, with Ta Lou’s compatriot Murielle Ahoure fourth in 11.10.

“The result is not bad especially after two false starts,” said Thompson. “But this was a great preparation for the World Championships. Coming straight from the Jamaican Trials, it was important to get back in the blocks. It is different weather in Jamaica! But I am glad for my first time in Paris. In this moment I am exactly where I want to be, feeling good, feeling excited with one month to go to the World Championships.”

There was more sprinting success for the Ivory Coast as Ben Youssef Meite won the 100m, not an IAAF Diamond League event here, in a season’s best of 9.99 after 41-year-old Kim Collins of St Kitts and Nevis, who won the world title in this city 14 years ago, had been disqualified for a false start.

Ulinzi hold Gor in trouble ridden match

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 1 – Stephen Waruru struck a brace in the final 15 minutes of the game as Ulinzi Stars wrestled from two goals down to hold 15-time champions Gor Mahia to a 2-2 draw at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Sunday.

The game had to be stopped for almost 20 minutes after a section of Gor fans caused trouble shortly after Waruru had grabbed the equalizer with two minutes left on the clock. They seemed to have been irked by the striker’s celebration, holding his jersey up high to their direction.

After assessing the disquiet for close to 20 minutes, referee Raymond Onyango restarted thematch and only played the two remaining minutes before the final whistle was sounded.

In Meru, new signing Cosmas Lewis scored on his debut in the 27th minute, tapping in a Duncan Otewa cross as Paul Nkata beat his former employers, ending their perfect run that had seen them pick seven wins and one draw in their last eight assignments.

It wasn’t an exact good day for the brewers at their new home ground in Meru as they were limited in chances with their best in the opening half coming through a Martin Kiiza shot from distance which was well saved by the Bandari keeper.

In the second half, Tusker pitched camp in Bandari’s half but were never successful, with Jackson Macharia having the closest of chances with two efforts that went wide.

Bandari were to be reduced to nine men in the final minutes of the game, first Michael Luvutsi handed a straight red card for punching Macharia while goal scorer Cosmas was sent off for a second yellow card.

Back to Kisumu, a first half goal from Karim Nizigiyimana and an own goal from Mohammed Hassan had given Gor a healthy lead at the break, easing loads of pressure on head coach Zedekiah Otieno.

Gor who had started stronger got into the lead in the 33rd minute when Nizigiyimana intercepted a through pass from Kenneth Muguna before beating James Saruni in the Ulinzi goal one on one.

Prior to that, Gor had created a few close chances, first Muguna attempting to send through Jacques Tuyisenge but Saruni was quicker off his line to collect.

Saruni was also at hand to thwart Gor again when he bravely came in to intercept a cross meant for Meddie Kagere from George Odhiambo. But after 33 minutes, he could not stop Nizigiyimana.

The Burundian right back almost made a second goal in the 40th minute with one of his marauding runs on the wing, teasing the defense that he was going up for a cross and instead taking a shot at goal.

At the start of the second half, Ulinzi changed strategy, head coach Benjamin Nyangweso bringing out Sylus Shitote for John Kago and Oliver Rutto for Omar Mbongi.

The change meant Brian Birgen who had been started up on the offensive right dropped back to defense while Mbongi, making a first appearance since March went in straight to left back.

But it was Gor who would get in the bargain at the business end, Mohammed Hassan deflecting a shot from Meddie Kagere into his own net.

The military side was stunned going two goals down for the first time this season and Nyangweso responded by adding in the attacking forepower, bringing on striker Enosh Ochieng for midfielder Churchill Muloma.

The visitors upped the tempo and were rewarded in the 73rd minute when Waruru tapped home into an empty net a cross from Samuel Onyango after Gor keeper Peter Odhiambo missed it.

He completed his brace, a 10th goal of the season after winning the ball from a set-piece, side stepping the keeper and tapping into an empty net.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 2 – The annual Safari Sevens will make a return to its traditional home ground at the RFUEA Ground on Ngong Road this year from November 3-5 after a seven year hiatus that saw the tournament played at the Nyayo and Kasarani Stadia in the intervening years from 2011 to 2016.

It is a return that is bound to trigger nostalgia, an electric atmosphere both on and off the something to look forward to

The location of the Kasarani Stadium had seen the tournament record dwindling number of fans especially last year, thus inviting the attention of the Kenya Rugby Union which has now made the decision to take it back to Ngong Road.

The tournament which started in 1996 has been the launch pad for the careers of many a great rugby talent, the likes of Kenya Sevens stars Steve Gichuki, Ken Aswani, Felix Ochieng, Benjamin Ayimba, Oscar Osir, Allan Makaka, Humphrey Kayange and Collins Injera.

Future world beaters in the mould of Mike Friday (England) as well as the South African trio of Justin Geguld, Mzwandile Stick, Renfred Dazel among others also cut their teeth at this tournament, once hailed as Africa’s Premier Rugby Sevens tournament.

Already, invites have been sent out to teams such as Samurai, Fiji Barbarians, Western Province, Portugal, Spain, Hong Kong, Zimbabwe, Uganda and the England Saxons.

In a bid to ensure a great fan experience at the RFUEA, the tournament’s Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has set out on a process to make infrastructure improvements to improve seating as well as liaising with the Traffic Police to manage the flow of traffic at and around the venue.

Event security is of paramount importance and elaborate measures are being put in place to ensure that fans and participants alike are safe and secure.

The LOC is also putting in place mechanisms to deliver an all-round, powerful entertainment experience.

KPL to probe Gor Mahia v Ulinzi crowd trouble

A section of Gor fans caused a halt of close to 20 minutes after Stephen Waruru scored an 88th minute equalizer, with the club accusing the Ulinzi assassin of making an abusive gesture to the fans thus instigating the violence.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 3 – The Kenyan Premier League will launch a probe into the circumstances leading to crowd trouble late on during the Gor Mahia v Ulinzi Stars match at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Sunday.

A section of Gor fans caused a halt of close to 20 minutes after Stephen Waruru scored an 88th minute equalizer, with the club accusing the Ulinzi assasin of making an abusive gesture to the fans thus instigating the violence.

“We have heard of what happened in Kisumu and the circumstances that are said to have led to the violence. As at now we cannot say much because we are yet to get the report from the referee and match commissioner,” KPL CEO Jack Oguda told Capital Sport.

“Once we get that and analyze it, then we can launch a probe and possibly take the matter forward to the Independent Disciplinary and Complaints Committee (IDCC),” added the CEO.

Waruru, however, speaking separately has denied any wrongdoing, saying he only stripped his jersey to celebrate the important goal that earned his side a point after racing from two goals down.

“It is a lie. I did not make any abusive gesture to the fans and the most I did was strip my jersey. Those saying that I instigated the violence with my celebration are only trying to find a scapegoat for the actions of the fans,” the forward said.

Gor Mahia had gone 2-0 up with a first half goal from Karim Nizigiyimana and a second half own goal from Mohammed Hassan. Ulinzi though mounted a fight with Waruru grabbing both goals in the 73rd and 88th minutes.

Gor would have opened a slim two point gap at the top of the table had they won, on an evening leaders and defending champions Tusker FC lost for the first time in eight games. K’Ogalo though went top of the standings on goal difference.

Tusker saw their unbeaten run put to a halt by their former head coach Paul Nkata who led Bandari to a 1-0 win in Meru despite going down to nine men with two late red cards to Michael Luvutsi and goal scorer Lewis Cosmas who was making his debut.

It was a huge win for the Coastal side who had not won over their last four matches and the three points lifted them to seventh on the log with 22 points, one shy of Sofapaka who are sixth.

Batoto ba Mungu were stunned with a 2-1 loss at the hands of new comers Nakumatt FC on Saturday, but head coach Sam Ssimbwa was less than impressed with the officiating, pointing it as the main catalyst for their loss.

“If the referee had done things differently, I know we would have won. We were denied two very clear penalties and most of the calls he was making were suspect. I am very disappointed with how the officiating has been and it is not the first time,” a dejected Ssimbwa said.

Nakumatt picked their third win in five games, pushing themselves to ninth on the log.

“Our aim when we came into the league was to avoid relegation. I am happy with how we have performed so far because we are in the middle of the table. We can’t really say much on our targets but once we ensure we are safe, everything else will fall in place,” Nakumatt head coach Antony Mwangi said.

In other results over the weekend, AFC Leopards’ struggles continued as they went down 2-0 to Kariobangi Sharks in Nakuru, extending their domestic drought to nine games.

Ingwe remained 12th on the log but there is enough work on the table of new coach Tom Juma who is however confident he can resuscitate the Leopards from their death bed.

KPL weekend results:

Saturday: AFC Leopards 0 Kariobangi Sharks 2 (Afraha Stadium, Nakuru), Nakumatt 2 Sofapaka 1 (Ruaraka Complex), Nzoia Sugar 0 Thika United 0 (Sudi Stadium), Western Stima 1 Muhoroni 2 (Moi Stadium, Kisumu).

Sunday: Gor Mahia 2 Ulinzi Stars 2 (Moi Stadium, Kisumu), Posta Rangers 1 Chemelil Sugar 1 (Afraha Stadium, Nakuru), Sony Sugar 0 Kakamega Homeboyz 1 (Awendo), Tusker FC 0 Bandari 1 (Kinoru Stadium, Meru), Zoo Kericho 0 Mathare United 0 (Kericho Green Stadium).

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 4 – Tusker FC’s George ‘Best’ Nsimbe was on Tuesday named the Fidelity Insurance Coach of the Month for May.

Nsimbe was voted unanimously by the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Football Commission after going unbeaten that month, winning all the five games to bag the 15 points available.

After a slow start to the campaign this season, in which the defending Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions suffered defeat in their first two opening matches, the Brewers took maximum points from every game in May.

Speaking when receiving the award after the team’s morning training at their Ruaraka Sports Club backyard, Nsimbe exuded confidence that his charges will defend the KPL title.

“I feel great to win this award just six months after joining the team. I thank my technical staff, the players and fans who made me win the coach of the month award for May. We started the season badly, but we knew we were the defending champions and we sat down as the technical bench and rectified our mistakes,” Nsimbe said.

“We still believe we can retain the title because there are a lot of games remaining and thus know that it is a marathon and have a long way to go, but I know we will make it since we finished the first leg on a high.”

Nsimbe started that month with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Kakamega Homeboyz, then beat Zoo Kericho 2-0 away from home, followed up with the 2-1 victory over Sony Sugar and beating struggling Mathare United 2-0.

Tusker finished the month of May with a 1-0 result over giants AFC Leopards as Nsimbe’s side climbed joint top with record 15-time champions Gor Mahia at the KPL table.

For his splendid performance, the Ugandan tactician was rewarded with a winner’s plaque and Sh75, 000 and become the third coach after the then Gor Mahia coach Jose ‘Ze Maria’ Marcelo Ferreira (March winner) and Posta Rangers’ Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo (April winner).

Fidelity Insurance Marketing and Business Development Manager, Nicholas Malesi assured the partnership with SJAK will continue, to see football develop in the country.

“As Fidelity Insurance, it’s an honor to be part of this partnership, we just want to reaffirm our commitment that we are here for the longest term despite the economic challenges, we will still honor our part of the bargain by coming through this partnership that we have with SJAK,” Malesi stated.

“We have seen it work, we were here sometimes last year so we have just confirmed that excellence is at Tusker FC thus doing the league proud. It’s a competitive season the two teams (Gor and Tusker) are tied at the top and we expect the quality football will continue in the second leg,” Malesi added.

Nsimbe, who took the reign at the 11-time KPL champions this season after the departure of his fellow compatriot Paul Nkata, is tasked to defend the top tier league title and the GOtv Shield.

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 4 – The new deal between Kenyan Premier League (KPL) and Bamba Sport will see at least two matches per weekend broadcasted after the partnership was sealed on Tuesday.

This sees the return of Kenyan Premier League matches to TV screens after the exit of South African pay television channel SuperSport in April.

The new deal will start next weekend featuring a double header and devoting a day to the second-tier National Super League.

The partnership will cost Sh100.7m with Sh36.7m going to the KPL, Sh24m allocated for production costs and another Sh40m going towards marketing and promotion across the broadcasters’ networks.

KPL chairman Ambrose Rachier said the new deal comes at the right time and will help the players get scouted by European teams.

“In the short time it has been in existence, BAMBA sport has emerged to be the leading producer and broadcaster of Sports content in the country and going by that reputation, partnering with BAMBA sport will provide Kenyan Premier League clubs and players a platform to raise its profile, market and make their brand more visible, and showcase their talents to millions of Kenyan households respectively,” Rachier, who also doubles up as The Gor Mahia chairman stated.

“As Kenyan Premier League, we are excited that we finally have a local broadcaster, with a Free To Air presence, that has stepped in with a very short notice to ensure that the league will continue to air in Kenyan households where football fans can watch their favourite Kenyan Premier League teams.”

League title sponsor, SportPesa CEO, Ronald Karauri outlined the new agreement was what the sport needed to become a staple for the nation.

“We wanted as many Kenyans as possible to watch our local players and its our goal at SportPesa to promote and love our talent. Our players do not get the right exposure and funding but its all coming together now.

“All Kenyan households will watch SPL games and we are happy about that because we tried everything at SportPesa to squeeze the little content we got from the previous broadcaster on our screens so that people can get a taste of SPL action,” the CEO stressed.

“We have limitations in terms of facilities but it is my hope that the leadership of this country will realise the power of sports,” Karauri urged.

“FKF is very excited that Kenyans now have an opportunity for the very first time to watch top flight football for free and this will provide an opportunity to showcase Kenyan talent to millions of fans around the country,” FKF President Nick Mwendwa declared through his CEO, Robert Muthomi.

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta has expressed satisfaction with the preparations of the IAAF World U18 Championships that starts July 12-14 in Nairobi.PHOTO/Raymond Makhaya

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 4 – While expressing her satisfaction with the preparations of the IAAF World U18 Championships at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani and Kenyatta University, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta has told the Local Organising Committee to ensure they deliver a world class event that will reflect the best of the country.

A total of 131 countries will be represented in the Championships that starts in Nairobi on July 12 to run until July14, with some of the teams expected to arrive this week to acclimatize ahead of the event that will be opened by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The First Lady who is the patron of event, on Tuesday inspected the facilities and was impressed with the work especially at Kenyatta University where the athletes will be accommodated in a special Games Village.

“I am truly overwhelmed with the work done here. This place will make Kenya proud,” said the First lady after an extensive inspection of accommodation, dining, kitchen and recreational facilities at the Games Village.

At Kenyatta University, the First Lady witnessed the hand-over of the Games Village from the University’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainana to officials of the IAAF World U18 Local Organizing Committee (LOC) which was represented by its chairman Lt-General (rtd) Jackson Tuwei and Chief Executive Officer Mwangi Muthee.

The First Lady then made a second site visit at the Kasarani Stadium where infrastructural works including the laying of new tartan tracks are 98 per cent complete according to Sports, Culture and Arts Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario who accompanied the First Lady at both sites.

“I am satisfied that actualization of the logistical and operational plans for the championships are well on course,” said the First Lady with optimism that the country will stage a world class event that reflects the very best of Kenya.

A total of 1,300 athletes will be fighting for the 37 competitions on offer where a strong 78-member Team Kenya will be out to defend its past record as the kings of long distance races.

At the Kasarani Stadium, where she met, mingled and chatted with some participating athletes of Team Kenya, the First Lady exuded confidence that Kenya was ready to receive the various teams and hold a successful event.

“This will be second biggest sporting event that Kenya is hosting since the 1987 All Africa Games,” she said adding that the championships provide an opportunity to appreciate the diverse talents among the youth.

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 4 – With many legendary competitors in quick Porshe 911s, Datsuns and Fords aiming for podium finishes, 2017 could prove to be the closest Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic.

Entries for the prestigious event continue to trickle in at the event secretariat in Nairobi with two former multiple Kenya champions Baldev Chager and Ian Duncan already enlisted for the nine day grueling rally slated for Kenya and Tanzania from November 23 to December 1.

Chager has won the Kenya National Rally Championship thrice in 2008, 2013 and 2014 while Duncan, on the other hand, is a six times Kenyan champion in 1987 in a Toyota Celica TCT, 1988 in a Toyota Celica GT4, 1989 in an Opel Manta 400, 1991 in a Subaru Legacy Turbo, 2000 in a Toyota Land Cruiser and 2011.

East African Safari Rally General Manager Pipi Renu hinted that other high-profiled local drivers could follow suit in due course.

“Entries for the event continue to pour in. We have many drivers who have expressed interest and I can assure rally lovers of some big names from Kenya and overseas that will be joining the list, probably some of the most famous locals. The last to sign up for the event was Kabras Sugar Racing which announced a three car Porscvhe 911 outfit so we expected more in due course,” said Pipi.

Also listed is Stig Blomqvist who incidentally is the event’s defending champion.

Blomqvist (born 29 July 1946) won the WRC drivers’ title in 1984 and finished runner-up in 1985.

Another car to watch is the Datsun 260Z of South Africa’s Geoff Bell and the highly competitive Group B Mazda RX-7 of French historic veteran, Philippe Gache.

Legendary driver and Arusha industrialist Jayant Shah will be returning to the biennial extravaganza in his 70s behind the wheel of a Porsche 911. Shah will be navigated by Ravi Chana from Kenya.

Though the Shah/Chana partnership started in 2010 in Tanzania, but it was not until 2015 that an opportunity on Safari Classic opened up next to Shah. Chana has since 2015 been called upon to fill the void left behind by the legendary Lofty Drews who has called “tulip notes” for Shah on previous occasions.

Scott Amstrong, who was born and raised in Kenya, will be making his debut in a Datsun 160J navigated by Harpal Sudle, formally from Eldoret. Both Amstrong and Sudle have relocated to the United Kingdom although the latter’s father (Sinder Sudle) is synonymous with Eldoret Rally organization from the 1970s to date.

The all Italian crew of Gilbertto Sandretto and Fabrizia Pons have also sign up and will steer a Porsche 911 prepared for them by English specialists Tuthill Porsche. Pons is no stranger to Safari Classic adventure and is best known for her partnership with Patrick Njiru and Travis Pastrana.

Pons guided Michèle Mouton to a number of good results  and is one of few people to have achieved world championship points as a driver and co-driver, having finished ninth overall in the 1978 Sanremo Rally before switching to co-driving.

NYERI, Kenya July4 – Former Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association National football champions, Kakamega High School started their Term 2 B campaign on a high, ripping apart  North Eastern representatives Boys Town 13-0 as the annual games kicked off in Nyeri on Tuesday.

Red hot Henry Juma displayed a man of the match performance, netting four goals after James Mazembe had given the Green Commandos the opener after four minutes.

Juma returned to torment the North Eastern side in the 39th minute with his second of the game.

Kakamega High then scored two quick goals through Mazembe who scored his second and Alpha Chris.

More goals came in the 47th and 48th minutes from Marvin Odhiambo and Ronald Sichenje respectively.

Also on the score sheet was second half substitute Evans Odhiambo who netted a brace.

“The game was good but scoring 13 goals was not easy. This tournament actually is a Kakamega tournament to loose, all my boys are reliant and we have been preparing well. We are putting 100 percent in every game.  We are not underrating any team,” Kakamega High School coach Brendan Mwinamo said after the match.

His opposite number from Boys Town, Victor Mugendi was disappointed with the result, blaming his charges for lack of concentration.

“My boys could not manage to concentrate in the game, this weather is terrible for them and although our opponents were better prepared I believe we deserved to win. We have learned something and if we lose in the other matches it won’t be like that.”

In another results, after a 2-0 half time lead, Eastern representatives Kathungi registered a 3-1 victory over Tetu from Central who were included in the event on Monday after the disqualification of Central region champions and 2015 national champions Passenga after an appeal for fielding an eligible player in the regional games.

In boys volleyball, Waa lost 3-1 to power house Malava while Hospital Hill beat Kangundo 3-1.

In girls football, Wiyeta were 4-2 winners over Ibinzo, Nginda beat Kwale 2-0,  Jabini  and Olympic played to a 2-2 draw while Kobala beat Utithi 2-1

In girls volleyball, Passenga lost by straight sets to Cheptil while Soweto beat St. John’s Kaloleni by straight sets.

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 5 – Former Gor Mahia head coach Zdravko Logarusic had expressed interest in returning to the team, but the club’s management has not considered him as they narrow down their search for a new boss to two foreign coaches.

The Croatian, who coached the record 15-time Kenyan Premier League champions from 2012 to 2013, had expressed interest in returning to the club he helped to the GOtv Shield and KPL Top 8 titles in his debut season, having left Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko.

Gor have now whittled down their search from the initial applicant list of 12 to two, former Simba SC head coach Briton Dylan Kerr and Italian Stephano Maccoppi, who is the immediate former head coach of Romanian second tier side Ceahlăul Piatra Neamt.

“We will contact both of them today, listen to their terms and lay out what we have to offer. We will then weigh both and whoever we will agree terms with should be the new head coach. This should happen by latest Thursday and by our next league match, the new man should be here,” Gor Mahia deputy Secretary General Ronald Ngala has told Capital Sport.

Englishman Kerr, 50, is a former Leeds United and Reading FC defender and he coached Tanzanian giants Simba in 2015 before parting ways and starting work back at his native England as the Chesterfield FC Under-18 coach.

He has also managed Vietnamese top tier side Hải Phòng. Previously, Kerr worked as part of the technical team at the Vietnamese National Team for the Suzuki Cup and Asian Games, assisting the technical bench and heading the Fitness program.

His biggest managerial success was leading Hải Phòng to the Veitnamese FA Cup title in his debut season in 2014.

Italian Maccoppi will be making his first sojourn to Africa, if he is successfully picked as the new man at the helm of K’Ogalo.

The 55-year old former defender has spent most of his coaching time in Switzerland, having worked as an assistant coach at FC Sion, a top Swiss side in 2014.

He has previously been head coach at fourth tier side FC Bellinzona, third tier side FC La Chaux-De-Fonds, Yverdon Sport and fifth tier side FC Locarno.

K’Ogalo has not had an Italian manager in the recent past while if Kerr is successful, he will be the third Englishman to work at the club with Bobby Williamson and Frank Nuttall having previously held the post.

Club legend Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno has been holding forte at the club since the departure of Brazilian Jose Marcelo Ferreira who asked for termination of his contract to join Albanian top tier side KF Tirana.

In the league, Otieno has seen the side pick only a point from two games with a loss at the hands of Sofapaka and a draw with Ulinzi Stars last weekend.

He has been successful in Cup competitions, leading the side to a 3-1 win over Nairobi Water in the GOtv Shield first round and triumph at the SportPesa Super Cup in Tanzania.

Meanwhile, the club will be shifting their attention to the history making tie against English Premier League side Everton FC next week Thursday at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Gor will depart the country on Monday with their entire 28-man squad ahead of the duel against Ronald Koeman’s men.

“It is a very huge opportunity for the club to play against an EPL opponent. These are players they are used to seeing on TV but getting to actually play against them is a huge privilege. We will go there to compete fully and hope we can win,” Ngala said ahead of the trip.
