The Gor Mahia team that started their CECAFA Kagame Cup match at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on July 13, 2018

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 14- The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Executive Committee on Saturday announced that Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia and their head coach Dylan Kerr have been handed two-year Kagame Cup bans.

The club was banned after refusing to pick the third placed bronze medal after beating Zanzibar’s Jeshi la Kujenga Uchumi (JKU) while the coach was handed the two year ban for what CECAFA Secretary General Nicholas Musonye termed as ‘continuous’ abuse to match officials’.

“They refused infront of the fans in the stadium and football leadership in the region to pick their medals. We as CECAFA we believe that leadership is about taking charge and making decisions. Whether good or bad, you cannot sit on the edge,” Musonye said in a press briefing on Saturday.

On Kerr’s behavior at the competition; “We have warned The Gor Mahia coach to respect referees and to respect football leaders in the region. He is also banned for two years,” Musonye.

“You can’t say bad things and abuse organizers. Every time he is abusing the referees and these reports have reached us. We have taken this thing very seriously,” he added.

Musonye further said that K’Ogalo had caused Kenya shame and has urged the Football Kenya Federation to take further action on the club who also reportedly missed out on the prize money.

Gor went to Tanzania with drama rotating all around their heads, the players having staged a go slow before their last Kenyan Premier League match at the Kisumu Stadium. Upon reaching Dar, they rejected the hotel allocated to them by the organizers as it was not up to their standards and looked for their own.

Prior to their semi-final match against Azam which they went on to lose 2-0, the team also refused to use the dressing room. The same happened in 2015 when they faced Azam in the final.

“The organizing committee has looked at how Gor has behaved and as a big team they should have shown good example but unfortunately they have shown a bad example since coming here,” Musonye said in his press briefing.

He added; “We want to have discipline in these competitions. All club leaders and federations should respect the law and put discipline in their clubs. If clubs feel they can’t be touched in their homes, it will not be the same with CECAFA.”

And, in case Gor Mahia go on to win the KPL title, then the second placed team or the winner of the FKF Shield will represent Kenya in next year’s competition which might be held in Tanzania again.

“There’s no chance to appeal. There are some things we can tolerate but not this one. I know some officials who went to beg Gor to come and collect their medals and they refused,” an agitated Musonye further stated.

Klinsman rescues Mathare from defeat

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 14- Substitute Klinsman Omulanga scored at the stroke of 90 minutes as Mathare United came from two goals down to draw 3-3 with relegation fighting Wazito FC at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Saturday afternoon.

Former Mathare aces Derrick Onyango and Edwin Lavatsa had scored to give Wazito a 3-1 lead, but Francis Kimanzi’s charges put up a fight in the final minutes of the game, Cliff Nyakeya completing his brace before Omulanga ensured the points were split.

The new look Wazito FC broke the deadlock after 10 minutes with Onyango striking his first of two before Nyakeya restored parity in the 34th minute.

However, Wazito went back on top almost immediately, Lavatsa taking them 2-1 up, a lead which they guarded till half time.

Eight minutes after the restart, Wazito went 3-1 up and began to smell victory, but Nyakeya started the fight back with a 73rd minute goal before Omulanga drew the sides level.

Wazito Facing the reality of relegation in their debut season in top flight football broke the deadlock after 10 minutes, Onyango striking from the right after the ball ricocheted in his direction from a double save by Mathare keeper David Okello.

Four minutes later, Wazito should have been two up but Joachim Omollo’s freekick from the edge of the box went inches wide after curling beyond the wall,

Wazito saw more of the ball as Mathare looked a bit disjointed. They did not look a bit of their selves, their usual tactical prowess closing in on spaces and passing the ball not anywhere in play.

However, they slowly clawed back into the game and they were on level terms in the 34th minute when Nyakeya skipped past keeper Martin Musalia to score his eighth goal of the season after the custodian had saved John Mwangi’s initial shot.

But, Wazito was back ahead thanks to some schoolboy defending from Mathare who were caught off the counter with Lavatsa coming to the end of the final ball after Piscas Muhindo’s shot was saved by the keeper.

Frank Ouna’s charges held on to the slim advantage until half time.

Kimanzi started the second half with a change, Omulanga coming in for right back Marin Ongori, a clear attacking change from the tactician.

Five minutes into the second half, Mathare almost went back level but Musalia pulled a great double save denying Alwanga’s tap from close range after picking a long pass from James Situma before bouncing back up to tap the ball away from Omulanga’s feet.

Three minutes on the turn, Wazito were 3-1 up, Onyango popping up between the defense to connect home.

Immediately after going three down, Kimanzi was bolted into another change, David Owino coming in for Alphonce Ndonye.

But it was Wazito who almost scored another one when Edwin Wanjala sighted keeper Okello off his line but his shot from almost 30 yards out came off the crossbar.

Mathare kept the pressure forcing Wazito to play with numbers at the back and they clawed back one goal in the 73rd minute when Nyakeya slammed the ball home from inside the box after being played through by Chris Oduor from Owino’s quick throw.

Kimanzi urged on his charges from the touchline and they drew level at the stroke of 90 minutes from similar fashion just like they scored their second goal, this time Klinsman coming at the end of an Oduor tee from Owino’s throw.

There would have been a dramatic end to the match when Wazito had a scoring chance just after conceding, but keeper Okello made a one on one save from Lavatsa.

Zakayo stuns Barega to WU20 5000m Gold

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 14 – Edward Zakayo lived to his pre-race vow, stunning favorite Selemon Barega from Ethiopia to clinch the IAAF World Under-20 Championship title at the Ratina Stadium in Tampere, Finland on Saturday, leading a Kenyan 1-2 as Stanley Waithaka bagged silver in the men’s 5000m.

Barega had beaten Zakayo to the 3000m gold medal last year at the IAAF World Under-18 Championship in Nairobi and just after earning his ticket to Tampere late last month, Zakayo vowed he was travelling to Finland for revenge.

And the 17-year old Kenyan who won bronze at the 5000m Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia in March in his debut with the seniors kept to his word, working up a decisive partnership with Waithaka to win the race.

Zakayo clocked 13: 20.16 enroute to clinching the gold while Waithaka with whom he has close bonds with settled for silver coming home in a time of 13:20.57.

“Barega was the favourite, he was the guy to beat today,” acknowledged Zakayo. “I knew I was in good form and I raced tactically well. Next I have the African Championships.”

Barega missed out on a podium place, finishing fourth behind bronze medal winner Jakob Ingebrigtsen from Norway.

The quality of the final was such that reigning champion Barega from Ethiopia, considered one of the most watertight favourites across the championships, was run out of the reckoning altogether in an almighty sprint for medals on the last lap.

Barega crossed paths with the erstwhile little-known Kenyan duo of Zakayo and Waithaka at last year’s IAAF World U18 Championships in Nairobi and while Barega ran out victorious on away turf over 3000m, the Kenyans showed a lot of pace in the closing stages of the race and might have influenced their tactics.

Barega and his Ethiopian teammate Telahun Haile were the fastest on paper with lifetime bests of 12:55.58 and 13:04.63 respectively and they made it hard from the gun, passing through the first three kilometres in 2:38.04, 5:21.88 (2:43.84) and then 8:06.70 (2:44.82) with Barega doing most of the pacemaking.

The Kenyans were more than content to be dictated to in the early stages and didn’t seem unduly weakened by the fast early pace.

A leading quintet which included reigning world U20 cross country champion Jacob Kiplimo from Uganda began to settle and they were joined by Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen who took advantage of the pace slackening after starting conservatively.

After a fast and frantic start to the final, the race turned into a nervous and cagey affair with six athletes still in close contention –and running two abreast –heading into the bell lap

A grandstand finish was in store, although the lapped runners with some moving out and some not caused some heavy traffic for the leaders.

The last lap was fast and physical with Zakayo slingshotting himself to the front with only 50 metres remaining, crossing the finish-line with his arms outstretched –and with pace still to burn– in 13:20.16 with Waithaka pipping Ingebrigtsen for bronze, 13:20.57 to 13:20.78.

Kenya has already won the 1500m, 5000m and 10,000m at the championships on the men’s side with more chances to enrich their medal haul tomorrow in the 3000m steeplechase and the 800m finals.

By contrast, Ethiopia only won a bronze in the 10,000m and were shut out of the medals completely in both the 1500m and 5000m finals. First and second on paper, Barega and Haile had to settle for fourth (13:21.16) and fifth (13:23.24) respectively.

With a win over Barega under his belt, Zakayo will be favoured for medals at the African Championships in Assela, Nigeria next month. Ingebrigtsen will also take on the seniors at next month’s European Championships in Berlin where he will contest both the 1500m and 5000m.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 14- Kariobangi Sharks moved a spot up to sixth in the Kenyan Premier League standings after hitting Tusker FC 5-2, handing them their first defeat in five games at the Camp Toyoyo Ground in Nairobi on Saturday afternoon.

At the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos AFC Leopards and Bandari FC played out to a dull 0-0 draw, a result that saw them remain at fourth and third in the standings respectively.

In Nairobi, Tusker who have had some resurgence since the start of the second leg were slapped into their heaviest defeat of the season with Eric Kapaito scoring twice in the goalfest.

Sharks were better starters and were gifted the lead just two minutes into the game when Henry Juma capitalized on an error from keeper Patrick Matasi to break the deadlock.

However, Timothy Otieno brought them level at the stroke of half time from the penalty spot after Geoffrey Shiveka handled inside the box.

Sharks came back off the break more determined and they just needed seven minutes to get back on top, Juma striking his brace with a chip over Matasi. Kapaito then made it 3-1 with a long-range effort.

Tusker clawed one back through John Kamau, but Kapaito ensured Sharks regained the two-goal cushion completing his brace in the 74th minute. Before they could even re-organize, Harrison Mwenda scored the fifth in the 77th minute.

In Machakos, AFC Leopards threw away the possibility of pushing into the top three being held by Bandari in a game that new signing Alex Orotomal missed a penalty.

However, television replays showed that the ball bounced off the underside of the bar and past the line, but referee Peter Mwai and his assistants did not give the goal.

Bandari had the earliest chance in the ninth minute when Yema Mwana broke the offside trap to progress through on goal, but he shot wide under pressure from Salim Abdallah.

AFC were awarded a penalty on the half hour hour mark when Fred Nkata pulled back Ezekiel Odera as he progressed through on goal, but Orotoomal who was starting his first match since joining the Leopards missed.

The pace of the game didn’t intensify in the second half, but there were chances still. Substitute Wycliffe Ochomo was sent through on goal in the 64th minute but his shot from the right was weak, keeper Ezekiel Owade picking easily.

In the 78th minute, Jaffary Owiti should have done better after skipping past keeper Farouk Shikhalo, but he took a heavy touch taking him off target with an open goalmouth.

Eight minutes from time, Ezekiel Seda’s swerving shot from range but Shikhalo had it covered.

Some action from the 2017 Karen Masters

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 16- South African pro Thabang Simon strongly believes that he will put up a good showing at the new tournament on the Sunshine Tour, the KCB Karen Masters at Karen Country Club in Kenya which tees off on Thursday.

The event which has attracted 32 pros and four amateurs from Kenya will be curtain raised by the Pro-am Tuesday.

“I have got a good feeling I am going to do well in Kenya. That is pretty sure. I have been there and I know the course. The way I am striking the ball is good. I have got a chance of doing well,” Simon said as he prepares for the tournament.

Even though his memories of playing in the East African country are no longer so clear, but he is optimistic that he will again produce good results as he did before.

“The last time I played Kenya was in 2009 or 2008, something like that. I played twice or three times on that course. I did well on my first and second year, but I missed the cut in the third year. I was not playing well that year,” he said.

But the Soweto Country Club player will have to improve his putting which saw him missing the cut at the Sun City Challenge last month and Big Easy Tour 6 last week.

“At Sun City I did not putt well. I hit the ball well, but my putting still needs some attention. I have been struggling with my putting for the past few weeks. I lost at the IGT as well and if I had putted well I could have won that thing. My putting was just out. But from tee to green I am happy. I am hitting a lot of greens and lot of fairways. I will just have to make those putts,” Simon said.

The 42-year-old player who makes up the field of 156 entries for the KBC Karen Masters is pleased with the discipline he introduced into his game of late which he believes helped him to do well on the Big Easy Tour, besides missing the cut at BET 6 last week.

“I have just changed my mindset, just practice, get on the golf course. Just play your normal game. I stopped some other things like alcohol, I cut those things out. I have been striking the ball well, but my mind was not that strong. I just told myself that I have to change that mindset and focus on good golf,” the member of Gary Player Class of 2018-19 said.

The Gary Player Class is the Sunshine Tour’s development programme which benefits from the longstanding support of the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB), founded in 1999 by Johann Rupert as the official body for golf development in South Africa, as well as the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation (EEFF) in a collective effort to use golf to improve the lives of disadvantaged South Africans.

Kenya will peg its hopes on Mumias long hitter Dismas Indiza, Thika Sports Club’s Simon Ngige, Kopan Timbe and Nelson Mudanyi among others.

We are sorry, Gor say after Kagame Cup ban

The Gor Mahia team that started their CECAFA Kagame Cup match at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on July 13, 2018

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 17- Barely three days after the Council of East African Football Associations (CECAFA) Secretary General Nisholas Musonye announced that record Kenyan Champions Gor Mahia have been suspended from the Kagame Cup for two years, the club has come out to offer an apology.

Musonye announced on Saturday that K’Ogalo had been banned from the annual championship due to their behavior after failing to go to the podium and collect their third placed team medals after the final last Friday.

Team Manager Jolawi Obondo on Tuesday expressed the team’s apology for their behavior which he said came about after a mix-up about the Sh1mn (10,000USD). Which they learnt while on queue for the medals would be wired to the Gor Mahia team account.

“One of the CECAFA officials came to where the players were then explained to the boys that the money will not be in cash but will be wired to the team’s account in Nairobi. The boys lost their heads at that point with that message. They expected to share the money from there like 2015 and maybe use it to buy a few things. This was the disappointment, but it went overboard,” Obondo said.

In delivering his apology, Obondo added that they were extending the same to the Gor Mahia office who might have felt that the team had lost trust in them in raising concern that the money would be going into the club account as opposed to being handed over in cash.

Gor Mahia duo Ephraim Guikan and Innocent Wafula

However, Capital Sport learns that the players felt they would get a lesser amount had the money landed with the office, picking their experience from the SportPesa Super Cup in May.

“We are apologetic to CECAFA because that was their ceremony and more so to our friend and part of us Mr. Musonye (Nicholas) that it was not intended to degrade the level of CECAFA but it was an unfortunate incident that we have to accept,”

“To err is to human; We made an error as human beings and we ask to be be forgiven,” added the Team manager.

Meanwhile, Obondo has refuted that the team refused to use their allocated dressing room in their semi-final match against Azam due to belief in black magic, saying they declined to use the dressing room due to the stench emanating from it.

Alleging underhand tactics from Azam, Obonyo said the dressing room smelt of ‘something not human’, alleging that it might have been liquids used to preserve dead bodies.

“We as Gor we do everything in prayer. We refused to go into the dressing room not because of rituals or juju; the simple reason why we did not go into that dressing room was because of the stench,”

“I called the CECAFA management and told them it was unbearable, and they also concurred and agreed that something had been done in the dressing room. They are the ones who suggested and showed us a place to use, they even brought chairs for us,” Obondo said.

Gor Mahia’s new signing Francis Mustafa celebrates his winner against Vipers during the CECAFA Kagame Cup Quarter Finals at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on July 8, 2018.

He also insinuated that before playing the final, Simba SC also twice refused to use the dressing room over the same reason. In 2015 when they lost 2-0 to Azam in the final, Obondo said they experienced the same thing.

“We called our opponents and told them that if the think whatever was there was normal, then let’s change dressing rooms. They refused,” Obondo further said.

Another issue that came up in Gor’s Dar es Salaam sojourn was the state of their team hotel which they immediately rejected on arrival and they were moved to another hotel, the same they used in 2015.

“With a lot of respect, it was pathetic; the food was not to any standards and we consulted them and informed them Gor cannot stay in such a hotel. They accepted and agreed to move us to another hotel which we accepted, the same we used in 2015, this was sorted amicably,” Obondo noted.

Meanwhile, it is left to be seen whether CECAFA will lift the ban even after Musonye said the decision was final and could not be appealed.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 17- Tanzanian giants Young Africans (Yanga) have vowed to leave Nairobi with maximum points when they take on record Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia in a CAF Confederation Cup Group D clash at the Kasarani Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Tanzanians sit bottom of the group with a single point gained from their 0-0 draw with Rayon Sports at home while Gor are a point above them at second from back to back draws against Rayon and leaders USM Alger.

“We know that this match is very important to us because if we have to progress we need to win. We have prepared very well for this game and we will ensure that we leave Kenya with three points,” skipper Juma Abdul said ahead of the fixture.

The last time these two sides met was in 2015 during the CECAFA Kagame Cup in Dar es Salaam with Gor Mahia ending up 2-1 winners. But since then, things have changed, including personnel on both sides.

Juma is the only surviving member from that squad with the other, Kevin Yondani failing to travel alongside Hassan Kessy due to a contractual stand off with the club’s management.

Assistant coach Juma Mensah meanwhile expects a tough duel from the home side but remains confident that his charges have prepared better for the game and will be in a good frame to vie for maximum points.

The match will be make or break for Yanga as a loss would dampen their hopes of making it into the knockout phases.

“Coming into this game, we know that every team has a chance to qualify and it is a very important match. We know we are coming up against a good side which is also looking to qualify but looking at the way we have prepared, we are ready to face the resistance and have a positive result to help us qualify for next stage,” the tactician said.

He added; “We watched Gor Mahia during the SportPesa Super Cup and we also watched them at the Kagame Cup. They are a very good team and we know their strengths and weaknesses. We will be ready to face them.”

Yanga passed on the opportunity of playing at the Kagame Cup and have had a three-week rest period which sees them approach the much fresher compared to Gor who have played six matches within the last two weeks.

Nonetheless, Mensah does not believe that will place them at an advantageous position, especially noting K’Ogalo are playing at home.

Meanwhile, the team says they will not be deterred despite a few off-pitch matters affecting them including two key players, Kevin Yondani and Hassan Kessy failing to travel for the duel due to a contractual stand of with the management.

The team has also not had the best of results on the pitch, but they say they are ready for a turn around.

“We came off a period whereby we had very good results over a period of four years. But it is normal all over the world. There are times you are up and others you are down. You can’t be up all the time. But we know that we can turn things around with a good result against Gor Mahia,” skipper Abdul noted.

Abel Kirui celebrates his successful world marathon title defence in Daegu

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 18- As a two-time world marathon champion, 2012 Olympic silver medallist and former Chicago Marathon winner the exuberant Kenyan marathon star Abel Kirui boasts a long and distinguished career in the sport.

Kirui takes time out from his training schedule and casts his mind back to this moment of pure elation moments after securing gold at the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Daegu.

“I was World marathon champion in Berlin (in 2009) and my expectation was as the title holder, I wanted to win the World title to confirm to myself I could be a champion once more. My preparations had gone well that year and I was confident I could run well.

“I knew I faced some strong opposition that day. My fellow Kenyans, Vincent Kipruto and Eliud Kiptanui were strong as were the Ethiopians (led by Feyisa Lilesa and Gebregziabher Gebremariam).

“It was a very hot day and I thank God my body did not suffer too much in the conditions. I made my move between 25-30km and opened up a gap on the rest of the field. I had a lot of momentum and power that day.”

“I opened up a lead of almost two-and-a-half minutes (his victory margin of 2:28 from Kipruto, the silver medallist, was the largest in the history of the men’s marathon at a World Championships). When I looked behind me in the final kilometre and I realised nobody was close to me, I could enjoy the final stages of the race.”

“The picture is of me dancing after I crossed the line. The dance was not pre-rehearsed, it came to me automatically because I was so happy. I just had a feeling I wanted to dance. As you can see I danced more with my arms because my legs were tired. It was a beautiful moment and I did another dance after I won the Chicago Marathon (in 2016).

“For me retaining my world title was a perfect moment. It proved I could be champion again and that is why I was so happy.”

Off field drama won’t affect us, says Kerr

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 18- Despite a tough three-weeks with off the pitch shenanigans threatening to derail their otherwise brilliant season, Gor Mahia head coach Dylan Kerr says the team’s focus will not be deterred ahead of Wednesday evening’s CAF Confederation Cup Group D clash with Tanzania’s Yanga at Kasarani.

Before departing for Tanzania for the CECAFA Kagame Cup, Gor Mahia players had staged a go slow demanding unpaid allowances and the drama followed them all the way through to Tanzania where they were ultimately suspended from the tournament after refusing to pick their third placed team medals.

But on Wednesday, the team switches its attention to a competition that has the potential to re-write their club history.

“Whatever happened in the past is in the past and we have to concentrate on the job at hand. We have had our issues off the field which have psychologically affected the players, but we need to look at what’s ahead of us and keep working for it,” the tactician noted.

Captain Harun Shakava affirmed that the players have their eyes fixed on the prize and have put the woes that wobbled their ship over the past month behind their back.

“We met the chairman on Monday evening and he talked to us as players and he assured us that our grievances will be addressed. We hope it comes into action but for us, our focus is on this game and getting the three points,” the captain noted.

Gor Mahia are pegged second in the standings with two points off back to back draws against leaders USM Alger and Rayon Sport and a win on Wednesday will be a huge step towards qualifying for the quarter finals of the competition.

“It is a very important game to both teams because everyone wants the three points. But I believe my players are motivated as they go into this game and they are focused and in the right mentality,” the tactician noted.

He expects a tough challenge from Yanga who have vowed to give their all for three points in Nairobi and has cautioned his players to ensure they start the game early and make use of the chances they create.

“We have always created chances, we have dominated games. Against Rayon we should have won, at home against USM we should have also won looking at the chances we had. We have worked on a few things in training and hopefully they show on the pitch,” the coach noted.

He is however wary that their tough fixture line up might come to bite as they will be playing their seventh game in less than three weeks.

“Sometimes it is very difficult to work on things because you have to play, recover, then play again. But we gave the players some two days off just after CECAFA and we hope it helped them relax and they will be fresher coming into this game,” the coach noted.

The team will be without defender Joash Onyango who is suspended having picked up a red card against USM Alger and Kerr is expected to fill his void with Charles Momanyi.

“Shakava and Joash have been fantastic; Charles has been outstanding with his attitude and professionalism. He has not held his head down when we needed him. Joash is devastated he is not playing but Charles can fill that gap,” the coach said.

Meanwhile, the tactician says he is pleased with the playing surface at Kasarani which will be hosting it’s first game since the tie against USM Alger in May.

The pitch had been closed down so the grass grows well after being hurriedly opened for the Hull City friendly match.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 18- A brace from Ephrem Guikan, one from Jacques Tuyisenge, and a Mwinyi Hajji own goal saw Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia outclass Tanzania’s Yanga 4-0 at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani on Wednesday night to move a step closer to qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup quarter finals.

The victory which was K’Ogalo’s first in the group stages took them to five points in the standings, remaining second after leaders USM Alger beat Rayon Sport 2-1 in Rwanda.

Gor were a class above their Tanzanian counterparts and save for a few instances in the second half, there wasn’t a dime of evidence that this was the same side that was playing its seventh game in less than three weeks.

Head coach Dylan Kerr made changes to his team with Shabaan Odhoji starting in goal ahead of Boniface Oluoch, Charles Momanyi slotted into defense in place of the suspended Joash Onyango while Bernard Ondiek partnered Humphrey Mieno in midfield in place of the injured Ernest Wendo.

In attack, Guikan started upfront playing out wide in the position usually occupied by the departed Meddie Kagere.

George Odhiambo who did not train on Tuesday was replaced in the starting team by Samuel Onyango.

A slow start to the match saw the first real chance at goal open up in the 12th minute when Guikan’s shot from distance was parried away by Yanga keeper Rostand Jehu.

-Momanyi effort

The rebound fell on the strike’s path, but on the second bite of the cherry, he was dispossessed by Abdallah Shaibu who poked the ball off for a corner.

From the resultant set piece floated in by Godfrey Walusimbi, a rising Momanyi at the back of the heavily packed six yard box saw his looping header cleared off the line frantically by the Yanga backline with the keeper well beaten.

Ten minutes later though, Gor had the ball in the back of the net when Tuyisenge met a delightful ball from Mieno after beating the offside trap before finishing calmly past Jehu.

The goal injected renewed confidence into the Gor side and they played with more purpose, keeping possession well and being patient to open up the defense. Yanga were playing second fiddle and they were far from convincing, failing to trouble Odhoji in Gor’s goal.

Their first real chance at goal had to wait until the 41st minute when they won a freekick from good range after Juma Hassan was fouled, but Ibrahim Ajibu struck the resultant set piece over the bar.

Gor continued to attack and in the 43rd minute, they should have done better when Walusimbi’s cross from the left was poorly defended, the ball falling on Ondiek whose shot was however weak, the keeper making an easy pick.

Guikan goal

At the stroke of half time, Gor doubled their lead once again thanks to Mieno’s passing magic, the midfielder slipping through a defense splitting pass that was met by Guikan on the other end, the Ivorian calmly slotting the ball into the bottom left corner, the keeper left in no man’s land.

Yanga started better in the second half, probably buoyed by the half time pep talk which inspired them to come back in and fight to reclaim the two goal deficit.

Gor’s start in the half was dampened with striker Tuyisenge limping off injured just four minutes in after failing to recover from a knock he picked towards the close of the first half.

In his place coach Kerr brought in new signing Francis Mustafa with Gor fans getting the first opportunity of seeing their new Burundian acquisition brought in to replace Kagere.

Mustafa had a chance to mark his home debut with a goal after interchanging passes with Guikan but he failed to pull the trigger inside the box, his shot blocked and Guikan picked up the rebound only for it to be saved by the keeper.

Another peach of a pass from Mieno in the 63rd minute landed on Onyango at the back post but the former Ulinzi man’s connection was blocked by the keeper at his near post.

A minute later, a promising build up from Gor saw Ondiek pick the ball from good shooting range, but his low effort was deflected for a corner.

Gor’s building pressure bore fruit in the 65th minute when Hajj headed into his own net as he tried to clear away a cross from Kahata destined for Momanyi inside the box after a short start to a corner.

With the game in comfort zone, Gor slowed down the tempo, passed with ease and managed to control the attacks from Yanga.

Guikan then finished off the day in emphatic fashion slamming the ball home from the edge of the box after a counter attack with three minutes of play left.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 19- Yanga assistant coach Juma Mensah says the team handed Gor Mahia goals on a silver platter, admitting that the record Kenyan Premier League champions were better than them in their Wednesday evening CAF Confederation Cup match.

Gor came out 4-0 winners with Ivorian forward Ephraim Guikan scoring twice adding on to Jacques Tuyisenge’s opener while Hajji Mwinyi scored an own goal.

“It is a painful loss especially allowing in four goals. The first two were gifts handed to them on a silver platter. There was too match ball watching. We failed to track our opponents thinking it was offside and it was not,” the tactician said after the loss.

His sentiments were echoed by skipper Juma Abdul who was visibly crestfallen after the result which essentially puts them in a must win situation for all their remaining three games of the campaign.

“We made mistakes in defense and allowed the goals but I hope we have learnt and also the coaches have taken notes on what we need to do to improve in the return game,” Juma said.

The two sides lock horns again in 10 days’ time at the National Stadium in Dar Es Salaam and a loss will all but end Yanga’s campaign in the competition.

The team is however still holding on to faith that they can win all their remaining games and squeeze in to the quarter finals. The top two teams in the pool advance to the last eight.

“It is possible especially if we can get a result on the 29th against Gor. We will be at home with our fans behind us which means more confidence. Also, there are some new players who were not yet registered for this game but hopefully by then it will be sorted,”

“We have three remaining games; two at home and one away and I still believe we have hopes. Anything is possible in football and if we can win all the three games, we stand a chance.” Captain Juma said.

Meanwhile, coach Mensah hopes that some of the players who were left behind will be available for the game, but says he will only field players who want to play. Raphael Daud will be back from suspension while the likes of Kevin Yondani and Nadir Haroub might be available as well.

“It is not right to start talking about players who are available or not. There are some who are suspended and will be back and we will also look at who is ready for that match. We have picked the points we need to work on and I believe we will be much stronger even in terms of personnel in the return leg,” added the coach.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 19- Lilian Mutuuzo’s seventh minute goal was all Uganda’s Crested Cranes needed to exert revenge against Kenya’s Harambee Starlets in their opening game of the CECAFA Women’s Championship at the Stade de Kigali in Nyamirambo on Thursday evening.

Starlets had beaten the Ugandans in three of their last four meetings including a 4-0 spanking in both a friendly and the 2016 CECAFA Women’s Championship, but the Crested Cranes finally got one over their neighbors.

Kenya had also beaten the Ugandans by a solitary goal in the CAF African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifier in May and this was perfect revenge.

After going ahead early in the game, the Ugandans had more chances to score with Grace Aluka’s 33rd minute freekick going against the crossbar.

Starlets also had chances to score, the closest being a Mwanahalima Adam effort that went against the bar after 18 minutes.

Starlets who finished second after losing 2-1 to Tanzania in the final back in 2016 now have to win their next match on Saturday when they take on the reigning champions at the Stade de Kigali.

Another loss will dampen their hopes of clinching the title.

This year’s Championship is being played in a round robin format. After facing Tanzania, David Ouma’s girls will take on Ethiopia on Wednesday before winding down their campaign with a tie against hosts Rwanda on Friday.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 19- Zimbabwean golfer Ryan Cairns has set a new record, becoming the first ever player to sink a hole in one at the KCB Karen Masters, striking on the first attempt in the 5th hole at the par 72 course.

The 33-year old clinched the Hole-in-One prize, a brand new 3litre 16 valve Toyota Land Cruiser Prado valued at Sh10.3million.

The Royal Harare Golf Club fired a 6-iron into the hole at 317m (210 yards) par three 5th which is the official designated Hole-In-One hole of the 2018 KCB Karen Masters.

No player has ever achieved the feat since the Hole-in-One car was introduced in the Karen Masters.

This year, the car was donated by Toyota Kenya which has offered cars for the Hole-in-One in other tournaments before.

Cairns was all smiles despite finishing day one on level par 72, which was six shots off the lead by the time he checked into the 18th hole.

“It’s a very special day for me. I never imagined I could hit the hole in one especially on the first day and started playing even better after that,” said Cairns.

Meanwhile, South African Pro Merrick Bremner took a one shot lead on Day One of the 2018 KCB Karen Masters.

The South African fired an impressive round of 7 under par 65 to lead a big field of 156 players as the Masters made its debut in the prestigious Sunshine Tour.

South Africa based Kenyan Stefan Andersen was the top placed Kenyan with a round of 4 under par 68.

The South African had his campaign effectively sewn up when his closest challenger and compatriot Anton Haig went to bed with a 6 under par 66 score.

Ruan Conradie and Roberto Lupini were joint third on five under par 67.

South Africa based Kenyan Stefan Andersen was the top placed Kenyan with a round of 4 under par 68.

“I’m satisfied with the score at the end of the day though I feel I could have played much better. The course is amazing and greens really perfect. I have had a lot of exposure as I have been playing in the Sunshine Tour for the last six years,”

“In the next coming days I am going to rest a lot and take it easy and when the time comes to play I’m going to play. I don’t want to compete against other Kenyans. I think as a country we should play more as a team. On the course, I try not have any expectations as it puts unnecessary pressure on me, I just try to be patient and play golf.”

Sigiona Pro Mohit Mediratta was the second best placed Kenyan on 3 under.

On form Mohit is one of the three Kenyans who made the cut at this year’s Kenya Open Championship and is looking forward to making another cut tomorrow.

Thika Sports Club Simon Ngige fired 1 under par 71 to finish as the third best placed Kenyan and was all smiles upon handing in his card.

“One under wasn’t that bad on day one. We will try and up our tempo tomorrow and ensure that more Kenyans make the cut,” said Ngige.

It was a not a very favourable day at the office for Kenya’s finest Dismas Indiza who played a level par 72 in the first round.

The competition is being decided over 72 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes tomorrow, there will be a cut to the leading 60 professionals and ties.

Will Besseling of the Netherlands is the defending champion but is not in the field to defend this week: He won the tournament by 12-under-par 132 to win the Blue Jacket last year on the first edition in 2017.

Gor Mahia head coach Dylan Kerr shouts instructions from the touchline during their CAF Confederation Cup Group D match against Tanzania’s Yanga at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani on July 18, 2018. PHOTO/Raymond Makhaya

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 19- Gor Mahia head coach Dylan Kerr has suggested that the groove might finally be returning to the club after a three-week period of instability, saying his players ‘played with a smile on their faces’ in their 4-0 triumph against Tanzania’s Yanga in a CAF Confederation Cup Group D fixture at Kasarani on Wednesday night.

Prior to the game, the team had been shaken from all corners ranging from player go slows over unpaid allowances and a ban from CECAFA after snubbing the medal ceremony at the Kagame Cup.

But the players put all that behind their back producing a flawless performance to beat Yanga and boost their chances of making it into the quarter finals of the continental competition.

“For me, I can’t be more proud of these players; I am proud of them every day. The way they play, hustle for the ball and fight, I could see players playing with a smile on their face today which was great,” The coach said.

He added; “The performance shows passion and pride. We know things happen and sometimes upsets my players, but when they put the green jersey on and step over the white line, they give their all. They were 75pec happy and Imagine what it would be like if we were 100pc happy…. if people support these players for their effort?”

The tactician praised Gor’s performance in the Wednesday night fixture, saying his players were simply a class above Yanga.

“This was a great performance. A performance of caliber. We were missing some key players and we had to jig but still we produced an outstanding performance. We scored four goals but maybe we could have had three or four more,” Kerr noted.

He was particularly full of praise for midfielder Humphrey Mieno who commanded the middle of the pack in the entire game, his passing ability on the night being key to Gor Mahia’s attacking prowess.

“His (Mieno) value keeps going up with every game and his performance today was outstanding. He is getting better and better at every game and he has to maintain that. Not only him but all the players,” the coach noted.

Mieno himself was elated with the performance, but as humble as he is credited the team for the huge goal return.

“There’s nothing special. It’s just what we midfielders have to do and we did it. I think we had a very good performance scoring four goals and we should be able to take this to the next games,” the soft-spoken midfielder said.

Gor find themselves with another packed week before playing Yanga in the return fixture on July 29 in Dar es Salaam. They play arch rivals AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Derby on Sunday at the Kasarani Stadium before facing Posta Rangers in a Cup fixture at the same venue in midweek.

Kerr though is confident they can handle the heat that comes with the running fixtures.

“It is tough but we have to take it as it comes. I will give the players a day’s rest and hopefully they can come back happy. I have realized that if you want the players to give their best for you, keep them happy. We have done this all season and I am amazed at how well the players have handled it,” the tactician noted.

A win for Gor in the return game against Yanga in Dar will all but hand them golden quarter final opportunity with only two group matches left.

Shujaa out for W Cup glory in San Francisco

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 20- After a successful season at the World Rugby Sevens Series which saw them surpass the 100-point barrier for the first time in their history, the national sevens team will be up to complete the season in style when they kick off their World Cup adventure on Friday night at the AT&T Park in San Francisco, United States.

Shujaa cross the white chalk at 11:03pm against the tournament’s lowest ranked team Tonga in their opening game in what is a new revamped format for the World Cup.

A win against Tonga will earn them a ticket to the second round of 16 where they have been pooled against the remaining top eight ranked teams with Scotland being their next opponents.

“It is a very interesting pooling where you really have to adapt fast to the chaos of the game. But for us, we have our performance targets which we have to stick to and we will be ready to take on each team,” head coach Innocent Simiyu said prior to the team’s departure to San Francisco.

If they go past the Scotland hurdle, Simiyu’s charges will grab a potential quarter final tie against South Africa, if the Springboks manage to find a way past either Ireland or Chile.

Shujaa aim to do better than the previous two occasions in 2009 and 2013 when they made it into the semi-finals, but they find the path more difficult this year with the innovative format.

We set our goals and mission before coming here. For some, the story might end here while for some it may continue to 2020. The aim is just to put in a shift and ensure we get good results during our story time,” the tactician further said ahead of the championship.

The team says it has put behind all the woes that threatened to derail their preparation for the World Cup, with coach Simiyu having been fired and re-hired all within a space of three days.

Drama started off at the Paris leg of the Sevens Series when the team masked out the image of sponsors Brand Kenya protesting lack of payment of their bonuses, leading to cancellation of the Sh20mn sponsorship by Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala.

The ensuing drama saw the Kenya Rugby Union fire Simiyu after he shouldered the blame for the fiasco, but after a meeting with Sports CS Rashid Echesa, services returned to normal.

“Of course we had a delay in our program with the strike, then I was out of the job… but players managed to train by themselves and we picked up when we got back now it is just to make sure that we are performing,” the tactician further stated.

His sentiments were echoed by Collins Injera who will be making history by being the first Kenyan to play at three consecutive World Cups.

“We had some hiccups but some are sorted now. The boys are really focused they want to play well at the World Cup stage. We have prepared well with two weeks of hard intense training and now we need to go and do what we do best,” Injera noted.

Shujaa have played in four previous World Cups, exiting at the bowl stages on their 2001 debut in Mar del Plata, Argentina and Hong Kong in 2005 before reaching the cup semis in 2009 (Dubai, UAE) and 2013 (Moscow, Russia).

Shujaa’s Rugby World Cup Sevens squad:

Oscar Ayodi (Captain, Homeboyz), Collins Injera (Mwamba), Andrew Amonde (KCB), William Ambaka (Kenya Harlequin), Samuel Oliech (Impala Saracens), Nelson Oyoo (Nakuru), Dennis Ombachi (Nondescripts), Jeff Oluoch (Homeboyz), Brian Tanga (Kabras Sugar), Eden Agero (Kenya Harlequin), Herman Humwa (Kenya Harlequin), Samuel Ng’ethe (Menengai Oilers)

Management: Innocent Simiyu (Head Coach), Geoffrey Kimani (Conditioning Coach), Lamech Bogonko (Physio), Erick Ogweno (Team Manager).
