Judge adjourns Pistorius trial to April 7

PISTORIUS-BAILPRETORIA, March 28 – The judge overseeing Oscar Pistorius’s murder trial on Friday adjourned the case for more than a week — just before the star Paralympian was expected to take the stand for the first time — because a senior court official was sick.

“One of my assessors is not well,” said Judge Thokozile Masipa. “I suggest that we postpone this matter to the 7th of April.”

Pistorius was expected to be called as a witness for the defence and later to face fierce cross-examination about how and why he killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day a year ago.

The “Blade Runner” sprinter denies a charge of murder, saying he mistook the model for an intruder.

Judge Masipa had been appointed two court assessors to help her manage the high profile case, which has also seen South Africa’s justice system put in the dock amid allegations of police bungling.

The case was originally scheduled to run for three weeks until last Friday, but is now slated to run until at least mid-May.

Pistorius is the only surviving witness to the events inside his house in the early hours of February 14, 2013, so his testimony is likely to be key.

The 27-year-old has to explain why he fired four shots at the model and aspiring television actress through a locked toilet door, and undermine prosecutors’ argument that her death was premeditated murder.

It will be the first time he speaks in public since the Valentine’s Day killing, besides pleading “not guilty, milady”, and the occasional “yes, milady” to Judge Thokozile Masipa during his trial.

Defence lawyer Barry Roux has read two almost identical affidavits on behalf of his client — one at his bail hearing last year, another at the start of the trial on March 3.

Pistorius does not have to testify, but his defence team has indicated it believes it will be in his interest to explain the night’s events.

If the accused does take the stand, law dictates he has to be the defence’s first witness.

- Every word counts -

“I think it’s going to be a very tough time for Pistorius. Every person who testifies in court goes through pressure, especially the accused,” said William Booth, a Cape Town-based criminal lawyer not involved with the case.

“Every word could count against you.”

Pistorius’s lawyers would want him to face prosecutor Gerrie Nel’s cross-examination for as little time as possible, but he could spend as much as two days on the stand.

On Tuesday the state called the last of its 21 witnesses against the athletics star.

The court heard testimony that depicted Pistorius as hot-headed and gun-obsessed, as well as hearing from police ballistics and cell phone experts and a forensic pathologist.

“If you don’t testify the court will say, well, they haven’t any version of yours tested under cross-examination,” said Booth.

“His evidence only has to be reasonably possibly true, and he doesn’t have to prove anything.

“If there was somebody who witnessed that, he wouldn’t need to testify. But he’s the only witness.”

Neighbours say they heard screams from a man and woman and gunshots the night of the killing, while a police ballistics expert said Steenkamp was hit in the hip first before suffering gunshot wounds to her arm, hand and head.

This means she almost certainly cried out in pain — alerting her boyfriend she was in the bathroom — before the lethal shot, prosecutors contend.

They have also asked questions about food in the 29-year-old model’s stomach that suggests she was awake two hours before her death — contradicting Pistorius’s version that they had been asleep.

The defence says the shots followed too close on one another to leave her any time to scream, and that the shrieks were actually Pistorius, who sounds like a woman when he is anxious.

- ‘Direct danger’ -

The double amputee, who was born without calf bones and garnered worldwide fame by running on two carbon fibre blades, earning his the “Blade Runner” monicker, says he shot Steenkamp because he mistook her for an intruder.

Defence lawyers say the pair were deeply in love, and that most of their cell phone correspondence was affectionate, despite one message in which Steenkamp said she was sometimes afraid of Pistorius.

If found guilty of premeditated murder he faces life in prison.

But even under his version of events the Paralympian could be convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter, which can also mean a heavy prison sentence.

According to South African law, you can only fire a gun at someone if there is direct danger.

“If he’d shot one shot it might have been different,” said Booth.

“Four shots into a small room through a door — that’s a problem.

“Even if that version is accepted by the judge, she could still say ‘You exceeded what you were entitled to do by the law.’”

Rampant Kenya maul Sri Lanka

AMONDE-FIJINAIROBI, Kenya, March 28 – Kenya took a positive step towards the Main Cup quarter-finals of the seventh round of HSBC Sevens World Series in Hong Kong after humiliating Sri Lanka 41-0 in their Pool A opener on Friday.

Paul Treu charges will now face Wales at 8:46am local time on Saturday for their second match before rounding up the preliminary stage with defending champions Fiji at 2:16pm.

Fiji laid down a marker by walloping Wales 42-7 with danger man Samison Viriviri scoring two quick tries for 14-0 at the start as Samuel Cross scored what was a consolation. Osea Kolinisau touched down for Emosi to convert and see them 35-0 ahead in half-time.

On resumption Fiji had to work less to seal the win with two tries from Stefano Cakau and Joeli Lutumailagi.

Skipper Andrew Amonde led by example to give Kenya the opener after running outwards to round two Sri Lanka players to reach the line but Biko Adema failed to convert as they led 5-0.

Winger Dennis Ombachi collected the ball from Adema who touched down before vice captain Collin Injera received a fine pass from Adema to break through the Sri Lanka defence to score his career 179 try to enjoy a 15-0 half-time lead after Adema missed all the kicks.

Shujaa maintained possession after the break with Amonde passing the ball to Horace Otieno who had no challenge to run through for his ninth try of this season before Adema found space to speed from the center to score on the outside to see Kenya extend the lead to 29-0.

Oscar Ayodi and Billy Odhiambo sealed victory for Kenya after Ayodi collected the ball from kick-off to touch down his 11th try this season before Injera passed the ball to Odhiambo to slide between the post for 41-1 victory.

Treu needs to win Saturday’s match against Wales to progress to a fifth Cup quarter-final this season.

Meanwhile, their female counterparts Lionesses fell at the final hurdle of the bowl competition at the Hong Kong Women’s Rugby Sevens, going down 7-33 to the hosts.

Celestine Masinde scored Kenya’s lone try with Janet Awino converting.

Kenya beat Papua New Guinea12-5 to reach the final after losing their entire Pool C matches against France 35-0 and 24-7 to China to miss out on the Cup semifinals.

Head Coach Kevin Wambua, speaking from Hong Kong, said, “It’s been a great outing for the Lionesses, we have picked up many valuable lessons from our participation in this tournament and this will surely give us the impetus to improve our performances moving forward.”

Ingwe deny Wanga move, aim at Top Fry

WANGA-INGWENAIROBI, Kenya, March 28- AFC Leopards forward Allan Wanga, has been sidelined for two weeks after a recurrence of his knee injury as Ingwe host giant killers Tor Fry Nakuru at the Mumias Sports Complex in a Kenyan Premier League (KPL) clash on Saturday.

Speaking to Capital Sport Friday from Mumias, coach James Nandwa, confirmed the Harambee Stars striker is not in South Africa for trials as reported in sections of local media but he was with the team in the western part of the country.

“Those are rumors, Wanga is going no where, I have seen some of the media reports that he is in South Africa, yet we are with him here. It’s only that he will not be available tomorrow (Saturday) when we face Top Fry since his knee injury got worse leaving us with no option but to be without him in the next three games.

“We are prepared to play Top Fry which is a good team so we are not going to underrate them especially after seeing them beat the champions. We will be cautious when attacking since we have a good finishing and I’m sure if we utilize our chances we will win so that we can show our fans who are impatient that all is not lost,” Nandwa asserted.

He added striker Jacob Keli who was signed from KCB in the close season has not also gone for trials as rumoured by reports and would lead the line against Top Fry who stunned Gor 2-0 in Nakuru last weekend.

The beleaguered head coach revealed they had switched the match from it’s original venue, Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium for the team to prepare under less pressure as well as in the hope they will get better luck at Mumias as they chase a second victory in the KPL.

Skipper Martin Imbalambala, custodian Wycliffe Kasaya and winger Noah Wafula are the other crocked key players adding woes to a side that is hovering above the relegation zone with a win, four draws and a loss thus far.

It will be a tricky fixture for the national team assistant coach bearing in mind the new comers will approach the match with their heads high after humbling Leopards’ rivals Gor Mahia 2-0.

According to the soft spoken coach, he will make few adjustments from the squad that was forced to a 0-0 stalemate against Chemelil last weekend with Augustine Etemesi, Bernard Mang’oli, Musa Mudde, Oscar Kadenge, Charles Okwemba and Ezekiel Seda up for selection in the midfield while Paul Were, Hassan Muhammad, Michael Khamati and Keli will front the attack.

In the absence of Imbalambala, Nandwa will field Edwin Wafula, Titus Wamalwa, James Situma and Jackson Saleh at the back with Martin Musalia still holding brief for Kasaya.

Their opponents led by stand-in coach Peter Okidi, are rejuvenated with their main striker John Ndirangu, who notched the brace against K’Ogalo to give them their first win of the season sending a warning to Leopards.

“It will not be an easy game because we are plying away against a side that will be preparing for us especially after Gor win but we will give it our best,” Ndirangu stated.

This is the first time the two sides are meeting with both of them having only one win after six rounds.

Will the debutants pull another shock result this time round against Ingwe?

In other top cream fixtures, K’Ogalo will travel to Bandari seeking to stop their three winless streak against the dockers who have lost four games to see them placed 14th with three points after winning only once.

A win for coach Twahir Muhiddin will ease the pain on heart broken coast fans who expected the side to push for the title this season but are facing a wounded giant keen to bounce back after their loss to Top Fry and 1-1 midweek stalemate against nine-man log leaders Tusker.

Coach Bobby Williamson will bank on Kevin Omondi, Dan Sserunkuma, Bandari’s former winger Shaban Kenga and Timonah Wanyonyi to sink the dockers after they impressed during the Tusker game where Gor had themselves to blame for allowing their title rivals back to the game after seixzing the initiative.

Leaders Tusker will be away to Muhoroni who are bubbling under new coach Francis Baraza who sets up his sides not to lose while 2009 champions Sofapaka invite Nairobi City Stars at Machakos’ Kenyatta Stadium.

Chemelil welcome KRA as Western Stima will be away in Nairobi to square it out with KCB.

New coach Robert Matano will parade Ulinzi Stars against Thika United at their Afraha Stadium backyard in Nakuru before Sony Sugar takes on Mathare United at Awendo Green Stadium.

How Kimanzi’s might humbled Gor

KIMANZI-TUSKERNAIROBI, Kenya, March 28- As the saying goes once bitten twice shy, but that phrase did not apply when defending champions Gor Mahia took on former titleholders Tusker FC in a bruising mid-week Kenyan Premier League (KPL) contest that ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

Despite promising the Green Army to bounce back from a 2-0 loss to bottom placed Top Fry Nakuru, Gor coach Bobby Williamson, failed to take advantage of playing against nine men with 12 minutes to full time after Martin Kiiza and utility defender Lloyd Wahome were given marching orders.

The result gave Francis Kimanzi’s charges the bragging rights over 13 times champions after winning two and drawing three in their last five meetings with K’Ogalo.

Since taking over the team late last season from Robert Matano, the former Harambee Stars tactician has gone six matches unbeaten and Wednesday’s match showed his experience when he calmly guided his charges to play on two men down.

His style of play seems to be working pretty well having a depth of quality players in all positions with his charges building up from the back, something that exposed K’Ogalo’s midfield that missed the injured Athony Okumu.

The Brewer’s strong center led by Brian Osumba, Khalid Aucho and Andrew Tololwa combined well with Jese Were, Ismael Dunga and Robert Omunuk in the front while the absence of Wahome at the back in the saw Osborne Monday and Jockins Atudo stand tall to deny Gor victory.

After the match Kimanzi said, “I’m very happy with players they gave it their all. I did not feel the pressure since they transformed what I teach them in practice and furthermore that was a plus to us since we were away with two men down.

“We usually train like we are competing and when we are in a match we play like we in training and it really worked since even during practice when a player gets injured we play few.

“The players were very calm and the mentality was high it showed we can fight when need be but I was not happy with Wahome who over reacted. He failed to handle the pressure and forgot there are rules because calculating the red cards picked which they could handle since they are experienced players but it’s normal in football,” Kimanzi stated after the match.

He added, “If we carry this morale to Muhoroni, I will be happy though we will approach it with another plan because playing against the champions is different compared to them since its usually tough even if they are not on top form.

“We are still in the title race and being at the top at the moment is a very good thing since it means we are also contenders.”

This was one of the toughest matches the two have encountered with the referee Sylvester Kirwa becoming the first official to flash out five yellow and two red cards in a single match.

Gor are to blame themselves after creating a number of chances in the first half through Kevin Omondi, who missed to convert them even before Haron Shakava could give them the opener.

Williamson could not change the game as he watched helplessly from the touchline his troops play long balls that did not work since most of their forwards Dan Sserunkuma, Rama Salim, Shaban Kenga and George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo are short.

“We had a better team since we created chances and our keeper Jerim Onyango, had many saves but I was disappointed with the referee who awarded them a penalty that wasn’t because he even didn’t run behind it but pointed from a distance.

“We are also to blame for not utilizing the opportunity when they were two men down. I think it’s because some of the players are not used playing together and their fitness was low.

“We are still competing in the league and our main aim is to defend the title and we are determined to come back at the top.

“It’s disappointing we had to play here today yet we have been training at City the entire week, if we knew we were to play here we could have prepared to play on the grass,” Williamson stated.

Treu Main Cup misery for Shujaa

INJERA-WALESNAIROBI, Kenya, March 29 – Kenya will play Scotland in the Bowl quarter-finals of the seventh round of HSBC Sevens World Series in Hong Kong after defending champions Fiji hammered them 43-5 in their last Pool A match on Saturday to end Paul Treu dreams of making it a fifth Main Cup quarters.

Treu charges only managed to win one match against Sri Lanka in their Group before shockingly losing to Wales 10-7 and Fiji completed their misery to see the South African fail to repeat last season’s performance in Hong Kong where Kenya reached the Cup semis.

Needing to win against the defending champions and Tokyo 7s winners after their Welsh disaster, Kenya were against it after only managing a single win in 24 meetings against the marauding Fijians.

This season’s leading try scorer Samisoni Viriviri, took his tally to 37 after he powered through to break the deadlock before Waisea Nacuqu, missed the conversion.

With Kenya poor marking in the center Setefano Cakau found space to beat the backs and touch down for Waisea to kick the ball through the post to extend the lead to 12-0.

Viriviri notched a brace before Pio Tuwai ensured his name is in the score sheet as Osea Kolinisau missed the conversion for a 24-0 score line to see Fiji pass 100 points for the weekend in the first-half.

There was no difference for Treu troops on resumption as Ben Ryan’s side looked favorites to defend their title when Cakau claimed his brace before Kolinisau crossed the line to extend the lead.

Worse was to come for Kenya who missed most of their tackles and poor defence to see Viriviri complete his hat-trick from the left flank before Nacuqu converted to seal victory with the only bright spot in another limp performance being the celebration of the first try for debutant Max Theuri.

In the earlier match against Wales, Treu charges failed to take advantage of their first win over Sri Lanka after errors in tackles cost them despite enjoying possession.

Samuel Cross punished them and give Wales the opener at the corner for a 5-0 lead to the breather after Ross Jones failed to convert his kick.

Shujaa corrected their mistakes in the last half with skipper Andrew Amonde tightening the back but Lee Williams threatened when he found space to run through three Kenyans and ground but the referee cancelled his effort.

Michael Agevi, eventually broke through to restore parity before his elder brother and vice captain Collins Injera, converted to take charge with a 7-5.

The lead could not last as Kenya were left to rue after conceding a penalty which Wales utilized well through Cross who went over in the corner to seal the crucial 10-7 win.

Wales beat Sri Lanka 47-12 to meet New Zealand in the Cup last four before Fiji takes on USA on Sunday.

Kamworor, Cherono rule World Half

CHERONO-COPENHAGENNAIROBI, Kenya, March 28- Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor and Gladys Cherono gave Kenya the double delight by striking gold in the men and women races at Saturday’s IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Kipsang, the 2011 World Cross junior champion and twice third finisher at the Berlin Marathon uncorked a world leading 59:07 to win his second global honour in a performance that blew away a loaded field that included record five-time gold winner and record holder, Zersenay Tadese and compatriot Wilson Kiprop, the 2010 titleholder.

As further proof of his powerful charge to the tape, Kipsang led 14 of the top 20 finishers to achieve personal bests in what was a blistering race considering there were no pace makers.

Earlier, Cherono, the Worlds silver medallist in 10,000m and double African Champion in 5,000 and 10,000, added the World Half gold in a record setting display by the Kenyan women’s squad that cleaned up the top five places.

Cherono took off over the last two kilometres to breast the tape in 1:07:28 with recently minted Worlds Best 10K winner, Mary Wacera, enhancing her reputation with a career best 1:07:43 with Japan based Sally Chepyego Kaptich also being rewarded with a lifetime best of 1:07:51 for bronze.

Pre-race favourite and number six runner of all time, Lucy Kabuu, faded to fourth 1:08:36, a season best for fourth with Mercy Jerotich rounding off the jaw-dropping show of complete dominance by coming home in a year best 1:08:41 for fifth.

“The race was great; we worked as a team and I was not expecting to be number one today,” the stunned Cherono said after her crowning moment as Kenya wrapped up team gold in this event.

Although the medals were shared in the men’s race with Samuel Tsegay, who has never won an individual medal in the shadow of compatriot Tadese, scooping silver in a career best 59:20 ahead of Ethiopia’s Guye Tola who took bronze
in the fastest he has ever gone out over the distance, 59:20, Kipsang earned all the plaudits for taking down the star-studded cast a mature performance to behold.

Not given a look in the run-up to the event, all the attention focused on the re-match between Tadese and Kiprop, the Kenya Police runner hung to the lead before two devastating injections of pace first ended the challenge of the five-time champion who was bidding for a record sixth before the second with less than 2km secured his biggest career win thus far.

“The field was very competitive, that’s what I was pushing, pushing, pushing,” Kipsang told IAAF after the race with Eritrea, who had won seven successive team silvers taking the middle step of the podium on this occasion ahead of Kenya.

Kiprop, who shadow boxed with Tadese for most part of the race before Kipsang laid down the hammer, clocked an hour flat for sixth as his dreams of a second title collapsed in the face of the younger fleet footed compatriot who is only 21.

Kenya last secured the World Half double in 2010 when women’s world record holder, Florence Kiplagat and Kiprop soared to glory.

Although Tadese failed to medal individually, his legacy was cemented when anchored his nation to the team honours for his staggering 13th medal at the event.

The next edition will be held in Cardiff in 2016.

Leopards clip Top Fry wings

NOAH-WAFULANAIROBI, Kenya, March 29 – A first half header by defender Jackson Saleh sealed a narrow 1-0 win for AFC Leopards against Top Fry to give beleaguered head coach, James Nandwa, breathing space in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) on Saturday at Mumias Sports Complex.

Saleh netted in the 10th minute after receiving a cross from Bernard Mang’oli to hand Ingwe their second victory of the season after going five matches without winning.

In Muhoroni log leaders Tusker FC were forced to a second 1-1 stalemate in succession by hosts Muhoroni Youth where goal poacher Jesse Were opened the scoring before Enos Ochien’g restored parity in a pulsating match.

Tusker who held champions Gor to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday where they had two players sent off finished the game with ten men when Khalid Aucho received his marching orders for two yellow cards as indiscipline mounts for Francis Kimanzi’s side.

Elsewhere, Nairobi City Stars stunned Sofapaka 2-1 in their Machakos Municipal Stadium backyard as KCB’s woes piled when they were blanked 3-0 by visiting Western Stima while Chemelil Sugar were held to a bareen draw by new boys KRA.

In Mumias, Nandwa, the Harambee Stars assistant coach was under pressure to conjure up a win to ease calls from Ingwe faithful he should be sacked and despite missing four key players, keeper Wycliffe Kasaya, captain Martin Imbalambala, left back Abdalla Juma, forwards Allan Wanga and Noah Wafula, Leopards averted further misery against the team that stunned champions Gor 2-0 last weekend.

It took 10 minutes for the hosts to break the deadlock after good combination between Mang’oli who brought in a cross from the right flank that landed on Saleh’s head to apply the finish for his first goal of the season.

Mang’oli could have doubled after six minutes later but his 18 yard strike went directly to keeper Ronny Kagunzi.

The visitors came close in the 25th when Erastus Mwaniki saw his shot rescued by Ingwe custodian Martin Musalia before the home team wasted two corners as Top Fry trailed 1-0 to half-time.

Both teams used all their substitutes in the last half with Leopards strengthening the midfield by  bringing on Ezekiel Seda, Charles Okwemba and Augustine Etemesi for Mike Khamati, Mang’oli and Oscar Kadenge while the visitors introduced Anthony Ng’ang’a, Joses Kizito and Wilson Andati for Teddy Siwa, Dennis Sikhai and Titus Achesa.

None of the substitutes made impact as both sides wasted numerous chances with Ingwe managing to scoop three points and see them propel to the top eight of the log with 10 points, five behind Tusker.

In other results, Tusker continued with their unbeaten run after holding Muhoroni Youth at their backyard 1-1 to stay at the summit with 15 points, four ahead of Gor who play Bandari on Sunday in Mombasa.

Last season’s KPL top scorer Were opened the scores in the 60th before Ochieng’ pulled back in the 83rd.

Ugandan Cranes midfielder Aucho was sent off in the 56th for a second bookable offence for hacking down Abbas Akinyemi.

The Brewers pushed on for a win with 10 men by effecting double substitution in the dying minutes with  Andrew Tololwa coming in for Clifford Alwanga while Ismael Dunga stepped in for Osborne Monday but they could not find the back of the net with three minutes of added time as both side shared the spoils.

In Machakos County, two goals in the opening half were enough for Nairobi City Stars to sink Sofapaka 2-1 at Kenyatta Stadium.

Batoto Ba Mungu wasted a lot of chances with veteran John Baraza failing to convert Enock Agwanda’s cross from the right flank in the 13th in what was seen as a clear opportunity to break the stalemate.

Seven minutes later the host were punished for their defensive mistakes as Dennis Ng’ang’a slotted home through a free header to beat keeper Barnabas Tiema for the opener.

In the 27th George Abege doubled for the Kawangware based side after heading home Kevin Ochieng’s header.

The 2009 champions scored their consolation through Anthony Ndolo with seven minutes to full-time tapping in Eugene Asike’s cross.

In other Sunday matches Sony Sugar host Mathare United at Awendo’s Green Stadium while new Ulinzi stars coach Robert Matano will be up against Thika United at Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium.

K’Ogalo in crisis as Bandari rise

BOB-WILLIAMSONNAIROBI, Kenya, March 30 – Some are calling it a curse. Others are screaming for the team to show character and win matches. A few are calling for Bobby Williamson’s head. It can only mean that Gor Mahia, the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions are in crisis.

The Green Army is up in arms after their beloved troops slumped to a second loss of the season to a struggling side when Bandari put aside their own woes to topple the champions 2-1 at Mombasa County Stadium on Sunday.

It came a week after basement side Top Fry stunned them 2-0 and in between, they contrived to draw against log leaders Tusker FC 1-1 despite dominating the game and playing against nine men for over 10 minutes.

They say it never rains, it pours and for K’Ogalo, the high of a first title in 18 years is quickly turning to a nightmare. The side that swatted everyone aside with panache last season is a pale shadow of itself amid reports of ongoing unrest within their ranks.

“We must start playing Football. We don’t want blame games. We are the defending Champions we must show character.

“We must start winning games. The solution is in us (as) fans we will always support the team but we need results, score goals even if it’s (like) Suarez period!” Barrack ‘head surgery’ posted on the club’s Face book wall.

There are those who maintained the club was hexed.

“We failed to visit Kanyamwa to thank Gor Mahia wuod Ogalo after taking the league after 18yrs of dry spell. The spirits of Wuod Ogalo are now haunting us. We will take the league again after 100 years, thank you,” Dancun Kosele held.

Williamson, the Scot who led them to the crown after succeeding fan favourite, Croatian Zradvko Logarusic, also came for some stick.

“Besides Uganda Cranes which other football team has Bobby Williamson successfully coached? (I) think the guy is just an opportunist. He thrives on efforts of others. In short he is a tourist,” Owino Aminer wrote.

Others quoting some media outlets, posted Williamson, who has enjoyed a frosty relationship with the Gor faithful, had been sent packing with his assistant, Bobby Ogolla, taking over in an interim basis.

However, club secretary, Chris Omondi, told Capital FM the reports saying the Scot was still in charge.

Omondi disclosed the club that will have no sponsor on Tuesday will announce a new partner within a fortnight with Bamburi Cement among those being considered.

Besides not securing a sponsor yet, the club is said to have been rocked by a row between players and management over bonuses accruing to them from the reward for winning the league and featuring in the GOtv Shield final.

For Bandari who moved up to 12th on seven points, the win served to calm the waters after Twahir Muhiddin’s side failed to improve on their fifth finish last season to endure a torrid start to the season.

Amid concern, the rank and file of the team met to discuss the rot last week and Gor were the unfortunate victims of their resolve.

“We did well last week and we had the momentum swinging our way going into this match.

“Majid and David Naftali made use of the gaps in the Gor Mahia midfield to capitalize on the space for our advantage. We are fortunate they were missing key players,” the former Harambee Stars head coach told SuperSport.com.

Gor, who would be top of the table had they beaten Top Fry and Bandari, trail Tusker by four points in sixth on 11 points, the manifestation of how thin the margins of victory and defeat are even though it is too early to write their title defense yet.

Alloyce Maingi opened the scoring for the Dockers in the 40th minute before talisman Dan Sserunkuma levelled in added time.

Victor Majid sealed the win in the 75th to give Muhiddin a sigh of relief after losing four matches and drawing one.

In other results, Ulinzi Stars keeper Francis Ochieng scored from his own half in injury time to help new coach Robert Matano claim a point from visiting Thika United to see the tie end 1-1 at Afraha Stadium.

Michael Olunga opened the scores in the 44th before Ochieng restored parity in injury time.

Elsewhere, Mathare United held Sony Sugar to a barren draw after current KPL top scorer Edwin Oduor missed a second half penalty at Awendo Green Stadium.

Before they could settle in the game, Majid released a shot that beat Onyango in the 75th to take over the lead that they ended up winning and move to 12th on the table with seven points while K’Ogalo dropped to sixth with 11 points.

In other results keeper Francis Ochieng scored from his own half in injury time to help new Ulinzi Stars coach Robert Matano claim a point from visiting Thika United to see the tie end 1-1 at Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium.

Michael Olunga opened the scores in the 44th after receiving a fine pass from substitute David King’atua to beat defender Mulinge Ndeto and score with his powerful left foot shot that beat Ochieng to enjoy 1-0 in the better part of the game.

Thika had to thank Simon Mbugua who cleared the ball from the goal line after keeper Muwonge failed to hold onto it in the 25th.

The soldiers levelled in added time through Ochieng’s free-kick that bounced before his opposite number to salvage a point as the crunch ended 1-1.

In Awendo, Mathare United held Sony Sugar to a barren draw after current KPL top scorer Edwin Oduor missed a second half penalty.

After seven rounds of the game Tusker is at the top of the table with 15 points, two ahead of Chemelil Sugar and Western Stima who are tied in second.

At the bottom lies Mathare United (six), KCB and Top Fry Nakuru who have three a piece.

Injera’s shines, Muthee ‘shields’ Treu

INJERA-IRBNAIROBI, Kenya, March 31 – Kenya 7s squad returns Tuesday from their tours of Japan and Hong Kong with only the Shield to show from the latter as once again the Main Cup dream proved to be a barrier too far.

Despite the dross, vice-captain Collins Injera, marked a personal milestone in Hong Kong when he cemented his position as the third all time leading try scorer in the World Series when he notched his 183rd career touch down.

Paul Treu’s side ended their Hong Kong 7s charge with three points in what ranks as his worst performance since he took charge of the squad following a 17-10 victory over Portugal on Sunday.

Scotland beat Shujaa 26-12 in the Bowl quarters to force the South African to line-up his charges for the Shield competition for the first time this season.

A 10-7 loss to Wales and 43-5 mauling to defending champions Fiji in Pool A on Saturday was enough to end Kenya’s dream of making it a fifth Cup quarters this season.

Speaking to Capital Sport from Hong Kong, Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) boss, Mwangi Muthee said the team would fire next season when the players get more used to Treu’s methods.

However, the highest paid coach in the country is yet to lead the team to the Main Cup semis this season with the Scotland and London legs left to complete the HSBC World Series.

“His mission is to build a team for 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and that is well on track and we expect the side to do well next season. This one was a learning process for Treu and the team,” Muthee enthused.

Against Portugal, Oscar Ouma opened the scores after breaking through the backs tackle to stretch his hands and pound the ball down over the try line.

Vice captain Collins Injera who provided, the opener was rewarded for his industrious work soon after beating the Portugese defence to scrum down for his 182nd World Series career try.

However, Portugal hit back on the stroke of half-time as Duarte Moreira ignited the burners and sprinted up field for a solo try as Kenya led 10-5 at the interval.

On resumption Injera powered a tackle on the half-way line in the fourth minute for his 183rd try, consolidating his place in third on the all-time leading scorers’ list.

A late burst from Aderito Estevez reduced the deficit to seven but it was not enough as Injera accurately booted the ball into touch on the hooter to seal Kenya’s 17-10 victory and the Shield.

In the semis, Spain broke the deadlock after racking up 14 passes on their way to the opening try through Pablo Fontes that Francisco Hernandez converted for a 7-0 lead.

Injera could have levelled after touching down but he went ahead to miss his conversion as they trailed 7-5 to the break.

It took substitute Daniel Sikuta to liven up Kenya’s chances of progressing to the finals when he ran outside to skip over a Spanish tackle to put his side in front as Injera this time round made sure his kick went through the post to advance to the final with a 12-7 score line.

In the Bowl last four, Scotland kicked-off with a try that saw Mark Bennett finish off after three-pass move to cross the line for Scott Wight to convert before Oscar Ayodi sprinted through on the left flank to pull one back as Injera missed the kick.

Bennett notched his brace to extend the lead before Scott Riddell intercepted from a Kenyan missed tackle to give Scotland 19-5 lead at the breather.

Injera recorded his 180th career try as Kenya showed their class but speedster Andrew Turnbull broke Treu dreams of a fifth Cup last four to finish with a fine move and send Scotland to the semis with an emphatic 26-12 victory.

After seven HSBC Sevens World Series rounds, Kenya has dropped to ninth on the log with 60 points ahead of the closing legs in May at Glasgow and London 7s.

Series defending champions New Zealand were crowned Main Cup winners after defeating England 26-7 while South Africa beat Wales 19-14 to lift the Plate as Scotland settled for Bowl after a 31-5 victory over France.

All Blacks are back at the log summit with 136 points; seven ahead of Treu’s former employers, Blitzbokke who are second while Tokyo 7s champions Fiji are third with 112 points.

Copenhagen heroes eye more glory

KIPSANG-COPENHAGENNAIROBI, Kenya, March 30 – Twice, Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor has arrived at a world championships without much fuss only to leave as the champion, mugging more illustrious opponents in the process.

If everyone forgot about his emphatic victory at the 2011 World Cross in Punta Umbria when he arrived late and unheralded before obliterating a quality field in the most dominant performance in a decade, then no one will forget how the 22-year-old mowed down the record five-time World Half Marathon title holder, Zersenay Tadese, to end his dynasty on Saturday in the streets of Copenhagen, Denmark.

In what was a day to behold for Kenya, World Championships women 10,000m silver winner, Gladys Cherono, had earlier led her compatriots to complete the historic sweep of the top-five positions as the country underlined its dominance with four individual medals, two gold, a silver and bronze in addition to women team gold and men team silver.

On Monday, the triumphant squad was hosted to a reception by Athletics Kenya (AK) in Nairobi where Kipsang and Cherono re-lived their finest hour, beaming from year to year having arrived back home on Sunday night from conquering Copenhagen.

Besides Tadese the record holder over the distance compatriot Wilson Kiprop, the 2010 titleholder, also fell to the furious running uncorked by Kamworor who stopped the clock at a world 59:07 by the time he was done.

And he is not done. Speaking on Monday, the Kenya Police athlete underlined his intention to attack and slash his lifetime best in the marathon of 2:06:12 on September 28 at Berlin Marathon when he lines at the race he has finished third in successive years.

“I’m now targeting for two major honours. One is to break the World Half Marathon in 2016. I know it’s possible, I only need to prepare well and create a lot of time in training. If I get good pace makers who will lead me through half way then it will be achievable since I have a good kick,” he explained.

“I will be using the Commonwealth Games trials to gauge my speed as I prepare to beat my personal best in Berlin ,” he added.

On his moment of glory, the World Half titleholder revealed he sacrificed team title ambitions to bar Tadese from clinching his unprecedented sixth crown as Kenya surrendered that honour to Eritrea who won it for the first time in seven attempts.

“I’m very a happy to win this major title especially after running with very experience people like Tadese who I knew would give us stiff competition. We entered with a plan that worked although we did not win the men’s team title since our aim was to shut Tadese away and make sure he doesn’t win his sixth title.

“I knew he is a front runner like me so we agreed to run as a team and made sure he doesn’t open the gap as all of us ran around him. It really worked because he burned out alongside my team mates and with 15 kilometers left I decided to take on the race.

“It was tough since five Eritrean were still on my neck but I managed to use my kick which I’m good at to win the race,” Kipsang described.

Samuel Tsegay, who won the battle with Ethiopia’s Guye Adola to take silver in a personal best of 59:21 shared the podium with the winner.

Cherono, the double African champion over 10,000m and 5,000m will now turn her attention to the Commonwealth Games where she aims to go for the gold.

“The race was good since it was a flat course and I’m proud with what we achieved because everybody was in good shape something that enabled us work as a team.

“I want to appreciate our coach Edith Masai, who inspired us to this victory as she told us to communicate with each other while running and that’s why we won the team title and individual gold,” she told in appreciation of the retired three-time World Cross champion who was placed in charge of the Copenhagen squad by AK.

“I was expecting to be in the medal bracket but winning gold was a surprise package for me. We ran up to 18 kilometers and when I looked back my colleagues were no longer strong, I decided to open the gap since I had energy,” the 30 years old who recorded her season best of 1:07:28 for victory added.

Mary Wacera Ngugi (1:07:43 PB) and Sally Chepyego Kaptich (1:07:51 PB) took the lesser medals as pre-race favourite and number six runner of all-time, Lucy Wangui Kabuu (1:08:36 SB) and Mercy Jerotich Kibarus (1:08:41 SB) completed the top five.

She added, “I’m now focusing on training my speed work for Commonwealth since running on the track needs a lot of speed compared to marathon.”

AK rewarded the four male athletes (Kenneth Kipkemoi, Simon Cheprot, Robert Chemosin and Wilson Kiprop) who finished outside the money bracket with Sh103,859.96 (USD 1,200) to motivate then for their efforts.

Queen awards Nyamweya OBE

NYAMWEYA-NOCKNAIROBI, Kenya, April 1- Football Kenya Federation (FKF) boss, Sam Nyamweya, is set to be conferred the Order of the British Empire according to information from Buckingham Palace.

Nyamweya, who took over the federation on October 28, 2011, will be honoured “For the exemplary services to Kenyan football and steering the county’s game back on track after a decade and a half of despondence.”

The FKF boss will however, not travel to Buckingham Palace to receive his OBE.

“Only the recipients of the British Empire Medal do not receive a summons to an investiture, owing to the very large numbers involved, and recipients instead receive their decorations from their Lord Lieutenant, or in the case of military medals, from a General Commanding Officer,” the Palace added.

“I’m so excited about this award and I wish to thank Queen Elizabeth II for recognising me in this special way. For me, this is victory for Kenyan football, not Nyamweya alone.

“I will issue a more comprehensive statement when it sinks in but for now, I cannot express my joy in words,” the stunned football chief who has come for harsh criticism in his time as a football administrator having fought to wrest control of the federation for more than a decade.

News Nyamweya would be receiving the accolade conferred to among other illustrious Kenyans, industrialist and philanthropist, Dr Manu Chandaria, spread like bushfire although not everyone was enthused.

“This is a mockery of the whole honours system. I think those who advised Nyamweya to receive the OBE did not tell the Palace the truth,” his suspended deputy, Sam Shollei, quipped when reached by Capital Sport.

“We will wait for communication from the British High Commission before fashioning our response but this will be a honour not only to Nyamweya but the country at large,” Commissioner for Sport, Gordon Olouch, added.

British honorary decorations and awards are occasionally granted to people from other countries that have made a significant contribution to relations between the United Kingdom and their own country.

These awards are granted on the advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is the most junior and most populous order of chivalry in the British and other Commonwealth honours systems.

Often, if incorrectly, it is shortened to the simpler “Order of the British Empire” and was established on June 4, 1917 by King George V.

It comprises five classes, in civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male, or dame.

There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the Order.

Treu on the defensive, yet again

PAUL-TREUNAIROBI, Kenya, April 1 – Under pressure 7s head coach Paul Treu, has come out to defend himself as the team limp performances in the 2013/14 HSBC Sevens World Series since he took charge in last November continued in their latest tours of Japan and Hong Kong upon return to the country.

The team that used to be welcomed in dance, pomp and color last season, jetted home to a lukewarm reception on Tuesday afternoon from Hong Kong their presence almost going unnoticed at the busy Jomo Kenyatta International Airport apart from press hounds eager to get answers from the team barely recognisable from last season.

Kenya posted her worst performance this season where they collected three points to lift the Shield and see them drop to ninth place on the log with 60 points at the Hong Kong 7s last weekend.

However, with two legs to go in Scotland (Glasgow 7s) and England (London 7s) before this season comes to a close, Treu’s camp has been hit by a major blow as captain Andrew Amonde the season finale after picking a forearm injury during Scotland clash in the Bowl quarter-finals that will sideline him out for eight weeks.

Horace Otieno is also a doubt after sustaining a knee knock but that does not trouble the former Blitzbokke tactician who said the recovery of Philip Wamae, Michael Wanjala and Felix Ayange, might have come at the right time.

Speaking while the team was hosted to a luncheon by sponsors Kenya Air Ways, Treu said the team is still mastering on the basics of his contact style of play before they specialize on various departments right from the props, wingers and kickers.

“We know our supporters are really longing for the first trophy and that is not the Shield, Bowl, Plate but the Cup. I can assure them we are all working hard behind the scenes to make it a reality.

“We are moving in the right direction maybe the results at the moment is not quite showing it but we have identified on things we are going to work on and we are starting at off-season where we will be looking at our team for the Youth Olympics Games and club players to see if we can get potential players that will add to the squad,” Treu who returned with the team for the first time unlike the past where he was connecting to South Africa explained.

Responding on players adapting to his new format of play, he said, “When I took over the team we were faced with a defence that was going backwards and an attack that was going side ways but we have put a lot of emphasis on our back and I think in some of the tournament we were second best in terms of missed tackles and tries conceded.

“I think it’s a working progress and if we can apply those strategies and techniques consistently for games and across the tournament we will be good to compete.

“As far as the attack is concerned everyone was crucifying and criticizing the team that we are not spreading the ball and I always say it’s easier to play a more attacking game and then open up but we are not used to it.

“What we are doing at the moment we are taking the team a step back to the basics making sure we can catch and pass the ball since we have seen most of our players doing mistakes on it going ahead to do simple mistakes like passing the ball forward,” he offered in mitigation.

“We would like to play a more open game unfortunately for us at this stage we are striving to get it right since we can’t get the ball away and the players fully understand other teams put us under pressure.

“There are two ways to play it wide, one is to pass, kick the ball wide or to the space but unfortunately our kicking skills are not up to the standards which we are working on as well as the passing the key passes quicker.

“For now we are concentrating to secure the ball in the breakdown, at the Scrum and line up after that anything is possible,” he expounded.

Amonde who just came from a shoulder injury that saw him miss Las Vegas and Wellington 7s will once again sit out when his beleaguered colleagues prepare Scotland and England.

“I feel bad missing the last two rounds due to injury but the boys will face a tough outing, I just wish them all the best. We did not perform well in Hong Kong since that was below par our performance.

“Our fans cannot understand that it’s not easy getting to a new system of play from scratch and get it from the beginning its takes time but we are buying into it.” The skipper who was up beat they will bounce back next season stated.

Kenya Rugby Union Chairman (KRU) Mwangi Muthee, who accompanied the team in Hong Kong, said the team is still in transition and will pick up in the 2014/15 season.

Despite piling pressure to the technical bench over concerns of poor run from supporters including their patron President Uhuru Kenyatta, Muthee, challenged the technical bench to utilize the off season well to strengthen the squad that will qualify to 2016 Olympics Games in Rio de Janeiro.

At the same time he urged rugby enthusiasts to give the technical bench time to execute their plans as they continue to build the team for the global showpiece.

“I was with the boys in Hong Kong and I can say that Treu is rebuilding the team, a lot of work is in progress. We should be doing better than our performance at the moment but a lot of good things are on the way so for now let’s give the technical bench time to do what they have in their plan.

“A lot has changed from last season and after having a sterling performance last season, teams have upped their game knowing Kenya is a strong side and that’s why the World Series has become extremely competitive this season,” the KRU boss explained.

The chairman was optimistic Shujaa will perform better and can push in London for the Main Cup title.

“I don’t expect the last two legs to be radical. There will not be many changes to the squad but I expect the technical bench to come up with a new strategy.

“After this season we will have to evaluate on our performance and the teams above us and ask our selves where did we get it wrong and work out to be at par with them next year.

“The top five teams, New Zealand, South Africa, Fiji, England and Australia have pulled out from the rest making it tough for all the10 countries that are struggling to catch up with them not Kenya alone.

“The game is getting better and competitive every day and I’m happy with the boys since they are getting along with Treu’s new style of play bearing in mind he took the team in mid season,” Muthee added.

The team that is yet to reach a Cup semi-final will go back to the drawing board to prepare for the final legs in Scotland on the weekend of May 3 and 4 where they are drawn in a tricky Pool C alongside Tokyo 7s champions Fiji, Wales and Argentina before they head to England for the London 7s a week later.as

INNOCENT_SIMIYU_2_460492361NAIROBI, Kenya, April 2 – The national team for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, will enter residential training camp at Safaricom Kasarani Stadium from June 16 before they depart in three batches.

Speaking will distributing grants totalling to Sh2.6 million (USD 30,057.80) to 20 federations on Wednesday, National Olympics Committee Kenya (Noc-k) treasurer, Fridah Shiroya, announced the first lot will travel on  July 12, the second three days later with the last contingent jetting out on July 20.

Shiroya who is the Chef de Mission for this year’s Africa Youth Games in Gaborone,Botswana, added Kenya will field a total of 131 athletes for the continental championships and will head to residential training camp staring May 3 to 17 at the same facility.

“We are through with accreditation and every thing is completed. We only urge the respective federations to work with us to make this a success.

“We really depend on our youth and we must encourage them to participate because this year’s event is very important since it will be used for the qualifications for 2014 Youth Olympics Games that will take place in August, in Nanjing, China. The only team that has qualified is rugby,” the treasurer who distributed Sh130, 000 (USD 1,504.6) each to 20 federations affiliated to the local Olympics body stated.

All the sports disciplines will enter a team except football, with Athletic Kenya (AK) having the biggest contingent of 30 participants that will depart May 18 for the Africa Youth Games that will run from May 23 to 31.

She confirmed of the 20 affiliates, two federations Kenya Judo Association and Kenya Tae-Kwon-Do Association will not receive this year’s grants since they have leadership wrangles.

“Every year we usually give something small to our affiliates to run their day to run their offices irrespective of whether there is a competition or not.

“But when it comes to the games, we have an understanding with the Government where the federations bring their budgets that we forward to the ministry of sports to allocate them funds for training and exposure.

“The only team that will get extra money this year is Olympic Boxing Federations that will receive an extra Sh855, 360 (USD 9,900) because they will be running a coaching training in May,” she stated.

Other federations that benefited are; AK, Football, Rugby, Volleyball, Basketball, hockey, Golf, Handball, Badminton, Swimming, Shooting, Rowing and Canoe, Wrestling and Cycling.

Closed roads for Kiambu rally rumble

PROTON-S2000NAIROBI, Kenya, April 2 – The scenic stage is set for the spanking new S2000 Proton cars to make their Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) debut during the third round of the competition against a backdrop of lush highlands of Kiambu County on the weekend of April 26 and 27.

Organisers of the event dubbed KCB Home Loan Kiambu Rally, Rallye Sports Club (RSC), have promised a spectacle to match the excitement generated by the shipping into this shores of the superior speed demons by deposed KNRC champion, Car ‘Flash’ Tundo and Alistair Cavenagh, who are revving to give the S2000s a run out.

However, the Kiambu race will be held in closed roads traversing the Cianda, Mbo-i Kamiti, Migaa Estate and Tatu City private properties and according to RSC chairman, Phineas Kimathi, competitors and fans are in for a rare treat.

“We have completed 70 percent of the program and we have just concluded our training rally last weekend in Migaa and it went on very well.

“We are excited, but obviously we have a few improvements to make on the route and in the general planning,” Kimathi, a former crowd favourite in the local circuit, enthused during the launch of the Kiambu showdown in Nairobi on Wednesday.

Stephen Mwangi, co-driven by Stephen Nyorri navigated their Subaru Impreza N10 to victory in the RSC Formula Club Series event held at the course last Sunday.

More than 40 drivers have confirmed participation in the rally that will cover a total of 183 kilometres of competitive driving.

At the same function Clerk of Course, George Mwangi, cautioned crews saying the rally will prove a challenge to them as all sections are new and extra attention is required to navigate through the route.

“Ideally we would call it a navigator’s rally but it boils down to the crew because these roads have never been rallied before.

“So when they go for the recce; they have to be very particular about how they do their notes. On the day of the event, the navigator has to be awake to give the correct notes and also for the driver to react to them. It’s a very technical rally and I can tell you the longest inter-distance between instructions is 600m, it’s that tight,” the clerk underscored.

The Proton Satria S2000 unveiled

Guests and media at the launch were given a taste of one of the new Proton Satria S2000 to be driven by Tundo and his trusty navigator by Tim Jessop.

Former national champions Tundo and Cavenagh recently acquired the two identical machines prepared by MEM sport.

The entry of the S2000 vehicles will see the dominance of Group-N rally cars being disrupted.

There will be four stages to be repeated on Saturday and Sunday and will tackle the tight and corner strewn terrain in Cianda (22km), Tatu City (30km), Mboi Kamiti (17km) and Migaa (10km).

Migaa will serve as Service Park, Spectator Stage and Rally Headquarters. Recce is programmed to start from 6 am to 6pm on Friday and continues the following day from 6am to 10am.

Scrutineering will be at San Valencia Gardens on Riara Road on the same day from 10am.

The Migaa section has been dedicated to the memory of the late Kenya Racing Team driver Ben ‘Baba Chiru’ Muchemi.

Top local paper falls for April Fools’ spoof

SPOOF-PICNAIROBI, Kenya, April 2- Sports desks around the world had a field day on Tuesday as they churned out pranks to mark April Fools Day on unsuspecting readers and consumers of their news.

But as far as spoofs go, it was total disbelief when a respected national paper fell for what was otherwise an audacious ruse with readers of Kenyan daily The Star waking up Wednesday to a back page story torn straight from a hoax report in rival People Daily.

To compound the saga, local football website, futaa.com ran a second day story of the subject of the trick denying he had sneaked out of the target club without permission, quoting him refuting the claims in what was a sound victory for the wisecracks that hatched the April Fools’ story.

In what is bound to leave much egg in the faces of the rank and file of the country’s latest daily news paper, The Star ran a banner headline, Keli at Inter? And underneath it, a story that Kenyan Premier League (KPL) top scorer, Jacob Keli, had gone AWOL at his new club AFC Leopards to pursue trials at Italian giants and 2010 Champions League winners, Inter Milan.

Not to be outdone, futaa.com had their piece titled ‘I didn’t sneak out’ published hours after The People revealed the whole scoop was nothing but a con story!

“AFC Leopards have once again been left sweating after the departure of their key striker, Jacob Keli, who has apparently gone to Milan for trials with Italian giants, Internazionale,” the intro to the story penned by reporter Muigai Kiguru, read in The Star.

The article went on to state club secretary, George Aladwa, was “not aware of Keli’s plans and only learned of his departure after he failed to honour last weekend’s match against in which Leopards beat Top Fry 1-0 in Mumias,” alluding to the weekend domestic league fixture for the club that crashed out of the CAF Confederations Cup continental tournament in the first round in February.

However, the story and its contents were all bogus with the report first appearing in The People on Tuesday as their April Fools prank.

“How can a fool’s day prank be a genuine story the following day in another daily??,” the sports editor of People Daily, James Waindi, posed on his official Facebook account alongside photos of the two papers.

Within minutes, the post went viral as many riled against the offenders whose slogan is ironically, ‘smart people read the star’.

Amid other comments, some that cannot be published, Job Mutai posted, “Armchair Journalism: A Case Study,” in mockery of those involved in regurgitating the scam as a genuine story a day after April Fools.

The player involved, Keli, the Kenyan international forward who signed for Leopards at the close season from KCB FC, was injured for the tie in what was extensively reported in the country by various outlets, a fact that escaped The Star and futaa.com writers.

Other April Fool gems that did the rounds in Kenya included Daily Nation stating the Arsenal ‘Invincibles’ of 2004 would play an exhibition game at the eastern town of Machakos this weekend, The Standard offered Olympics champion and world men 800m record holder, David Rudisha, had quit athletics indefinitely while Capital FM website ran a report that Football Kenya Federation boss, Sam Nyamweya, was awarded the Order of the British Empire honour by Queen Elizabeth II.

The People certainly took the biscuit.

Rudisha to be ‘ready’ for Doha

RUDISHA-FLAGNAIROBI, April 2- An April 1 prank by Kenyan media has forced Olympic 800m champion David Rudisha to come out and reassure his fans, he is not hanging his spikes and is relishing his return to competition in May.

It was reported recurrent knee injury had forced 25-year-old Rudisha into early retirement, but on Wednesday, the world record holder came out at his training camp in Iten to confirm he eyes a shot at the Doha Diamond League and chance to compete at the World Relays Championships in Bahamas in May in the 4x800m distance.

“I know many people especially my fans have been wondering for some time now on where I had disappeared to,” Rudisha told Xinhua Wednesday in Iten.

“I do not want to confirm if I will be running in a race tomorrow, but I would like to give an assurance I am back in training. My knee injury has healed, it is now important to regain my fitness in readiness for the international competitions and make my fans proud.”

“I too was surprised when I saw the article. Many were shocked to hear that too. And there was a lot response from friends and journalists around the world. I decided to switch off my phone. Days later I am still receiving texts from people who want to confirm from the main source,” said Rudisha.

His coach Colm O’connel, a local based Irish tactician credited with the development of several stars in the country, accompanied Rudisha during Wednesday training session in Iten.

O’Connell said Rudisha’s disappearance from the limelight after he injured his knee in New York while jogging, was prompted by the technical bench, who wanted him to get focused and spend time with family.

“Rudisha’s absence is down to our instruction. He has spent time with family and only go out to get treatment,” said O’Connell. “He had several therapeutic exercises within and outside Kenya as part of routine rehabilitation process.”

Rudisha who has another training camp in Germany, has always sneaked out of Kenya to see a specialist in Dusseldorf.

With Rudisha noncommittal, O’Connell said he is not in position to give deadlines on which will be Rudisha’s first race, but was emphatic; the former World Champion will be ready for the start of the season in Doha, Qatar on May 9.

“We don’t want to push him beyond the limit. We are also looking at his speed work but for now we are planning to have him participate in the local relay series,” said O’Connell.

If Rudisha competes in Nassau, Bahamas during the World Relay Championships, he will be following in the footstep of his father, Senior Daniel Rudisha, who is a winner of silver at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968 in the 4x400m relays.

Bekele revved for marathon debut

KENENISA-BEKELEADDIS ABABA, April 3 – Ethiopian running legend Kenenisa Bekele says he is in shape and hopeful for a win ahead of his hotly-awaited marathon debut on the streets of Paris on Sunday.

The double world recorder holder in 5,000 and 10,000m will be the star draw at the Paris marathon, and although not considered a world record course like Berlin, Chicago, or London, all eyes will be on Bekele to see how he manages the leap to track superstardom to the ultimate distance.

“I have a good chance to win because I prepared well. I will run to win, I cannot expect myself to lose,” he told AFP. “I can’t sit, I can’t sleep… it’s the race.”

Bekele said his training volume peaked at 240 kilometers (150 miles) a week, all of it at high altitude at his training base in the hills outside Addis Ababa. He admitted though that he found the higher volume of training for a marathon was at times “boring”.

Now tapering his training for the big day, he said he was just running easy and mixing in some shorter track sessions.

“I’m just minimising, decreasing the kilometres… that’s very important now, just easy training,” he said.

After an illustrious career in shorter distances, the 31 year-old is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Ethiopian “emperor” Haile Gebreselassie, who made a successful leap from the track to the marathon.

Bekele has made a stunning comeback from a debilitating calf injury which kept him out of competition for nearly three years.

In September, he defeated Gebreselassie and his track rival Mo Farah in his comeback race at the Great North run — his half marathon debut — outkicking Farah in the dramatic final stretch of the 21.1 kilometre (13.1 mile) race.

Farah will be making his own marathon debut in London a week after the Paris race, but Bekele has opted not to go head to head with him in the London marathon, where the competition is likely to be far more intense because of the presence of a strong Kenyan contingent.

While Bekele said he is not putting too much pressure on himself, he is aiming for winning results in Paris this weekend.

“It’s very special,” he said. “It’s great if I will win in my first marathon, it’s amazing, it’s a great thing you know if I really achieve it.”

Bekele’s toughest competition will come from a pack of seasoned fellow Ethiopians that include Abdullah Shami, who has a personal best of 2:05.42.

RELAY-OUTNAIROBI, Kenya, April 3 – The countdown to the inaugural World Relays Championships gathers steam this Saturday with the penultimate Safaricom Relays Series meet at Kasarani that will pave way for the IAAF World Relays Championships Trials on April 26 at the same venue.

AK has made the meet open to all athletes rather than focusing on the invitational format to encourage more hopefuls to try out for a chance to represent their nation in Bahamas on May 23 and 24.

AK vice-president in charge of administration and competitions, David Okeyo, explained, “This will allow those athletes chasing qualifying standards to do so and also have adequate time to prepare for the national trials.”

He called on athletes to turn out in large numbers with the federation putting plans in place to cater for the influx by extending registration to race day.

Okeyo was speaking when presiding over the closing ceremony for this year’s Kenya Technical Training Institute Sports Organisations games (KETTISO) at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium on Thursday.

The final phase will be conducted on April 26 to select a team that will represent the country at the World Relay Championships in Bahamas.

“Kenya has been a power house in the relays and we first won the Olympics gold during the times of Charles Asati, the late Julias Sang, Robert Ouko and Hezekiah Nyamau. We have never forgotten about them up to now and that means there is talent in the short races.

“I’m happy the IAAF has initiated the relays to be run as the championships on there own and therefore we have come up with a series that will be run for three phases to select the team that will go to residential training camp for three weeks before they head to Bahamas for the first edition,” Okeyo expressed.

The Vice President, who dismissed claims that the first held on March 22 was disorganized, added the final Trials will be by invitation only before a panel of selectors name the squad that will represent Kenya at the inaugural in Bahamas.

“The first was a build up and the turn up was good, I know people always say we did not see the big names but how did the big names come up?  They also came from somewhere so we are giving others a chance to grow. We are starting the event with the straight events before the main event in the afternoon.”

Athletes will compete in the 4 x 100m, 4 x 200m, 4 x 400m, 4 x 800m and 4 x 1500m both men and women with Okeyo saying they will send a strong squad for the World Championships as Kenya look forward to maintain her 4 x 800m and 4 x 1500m men and women record.

Meanwhile, speaking at the same event where Kaiboi Technical Training Institute were crowned 2014 KETTISO champions, organisation chairman, Evans Bosire, said for the first time the annual games incorporated their counterparts from Special schools and confirmed they will make them a regular.

Karen technical for the deaf were among the 34 Institutes that participated in this year’s competition where they went on to win the short races, with 200m Deaflympics champion Beryl Wamira, dominating the Women’s 100m before leading her charges to clinch the 4x400m.

“We work on a principal of impartiality where we don’t discriminate against any one and that’s why you have seen the Karen Technical for the deaf joining us since they are studying the same curriculum with the rest.

“The competition has become very stiff with the standards going high since we are getting good times especially in the area of sprints. Some of the students can challenge national record holders,” the AK public relations officer explained.

Bosire who also serves as the principal of Keroka Technical Training Institute, the four time champions added the school games has become very competitive as institution keep on improving every year.

“We have always produced good athletes who have gone ahead to represent the country in the international events, like 10,000m runner Paul Tanui. So we are very serious in terms of sports especially athletics. We made a special request to AK to allow us participate as a region in the national trials.

“As defending champions (Keroka) we are facing a lot of challenges from other institutions, we have been winning it for the last four years so I’m happy to see other teams coming up.”

Kaiboi collected 19 medals to claim the title while Rift Valley Technical Training Institute was second with 16 as defending champions Keroka settled for third after bagging 15.

AFC-FANSNAIROBI, Kenya, March 4 – AFC Leopards have denied appointing Italian Emanuele Filippini, as head coach as reported by a local daily on Friday.

Speaking to Capital Sport, Leopards Secretary General George Aladwa said they have not made any changes to the technical bench and James Nandwa remains the head coach.

He also conceded they have received many applications from foreign tacticians including Filipini to succeed the Harambee Stars assistant coach who is under fire after a slow start to the season.

“AFC Leopards have not made any changes in the technical bench and on behalf of the club as the spokesman, I want to assure our fans and members that Nandwa is still our head coach assisted by Mickey Weche, Washington Muhanji as the goalkeeper trainer and Francis Xavier as the team manager,” Aladwa told.

He stressed, “We have not appointed, Italian Emanuele Filippini as our new coach and I dismiss the report appearing in today’s papers.”

The Secretary General who has called a press conference on Tuesday next week to clarify the matter, called upon fans to turn up in large numbers on Saturday as Ingwe takes on Bandari in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Top-Eight knockout opener at Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium.

Even as the speculation on his future continues unabated, Nandwa was up beat they will give their best against the Dockers, urging his side not to underrate them after they were boosted by 2-1 win against league champions Gor Mahia last weekend.

“To play in a knock-out match is very difficult so we will approach the game with our heads high, opening the game but at the same time being cautious. We have been creating chances and that why I field many midfielders, but our problem is on the finishing.

“Bandari is a good team since they have good forwards who will make the match difficult but all and all our intention is to win and make it to the semi-finals,” the Harambee Stars assistant tactician explained.

However, the coach urged fans to criticize the team positively since changing of the technical bench will not solve anything.

“We are working every day to ensure we post good results and no player or coach wants to perform poorly. There is no strategy to win the league our aim is to focus on every match to ensure we win.

“Our fans should support the team whether they win, draw or lose since this id their team and not Nandwa’s. Coaches will come and go but the team will remain forever,” he added.

The den has received a boost in their squad as forward Jacob Keli who missed Bandari’s match after being involved in a commercial shoot and left back Abadalla Juma, who was injured will be available for selection.

Dependable forward Allan Wanga, winger Noah Wafula, keeper Wycliffe Kasaya and skipper Martin Imbalambala are still nursing injuries.

As Nandwa boast of having a solid defence, Bandari on the other hand have lethal forwards with the likes of Kepha Aswani and Mohamed Mwachiponi expected to give Ingwe back four the run of their money.

On Sunday defending champions Tusker FC will square it out with Sofapaka at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium.

Kericho Marathon put on notice

ATHLETE-LEGSNAIROBI, Kenya, April 4 – Following embarrassing confusion last year where some athletes covered 52km instead of the standard 42.195km, organisers of the fifth Kericho Tea Board of Kenya International Marathon have been put on notice to employ certified route measurers for the forthcoming edition that runs on May 10.

The 2013 edition was marred by some athletes running way past the recommended distance after they were allegedly misled by some route officials and during the launch of this year’s event on Friday, Athletics Kenya (AK) cautioned the organisers against a repeat.

“Organisers must ensure they have qualified technical officials. We don’t want athletes to be misled and the route must have proper signings that indicates turning points to guide runners.

“All the IAAF rules will be followed with Anti-Doping being conducted after the race and all athletes must be examined properly health wise since we don’t want to risk their life so nothing will be left unturned,” federation vice-president in charge of competitions and administration, David Okeyo, said.

Former Boston Marathon and world 10,000m champion, Moses Tanui, is the event ambassador with AK South Rift chairman, John Wachira, the chair of the organising body that begs the question how such an awkward oversight would occur.

In his remarks, Wachira, said they might consider changing the course if the bridge that broke during the previous event is not properly repaired.

“We have already requested one of the factories to repair the bridge where water usually overflow when it rains, so we are hoping to have a good race this time round and if the heaven opens up we have an alternative option so athletes should not worry about that,” the AK South Rift chairman confirmed.

The race that targets over 10,000 runners both local and international will have three categories, 42km, 10km and 5km with winners in both men and women of the full marathon taking home Sh1.5m (USD17,282).

Registration is ongoing and participants will set aside Sh500 (USD5.8) for entry fee that will cut across the board.

Former world 10,000m champion Moses Tanui, is the marathon’s ambassador with organisers setting ‘this is where the world athletes meet with tea’ as the theme for this year.

Okeyo did not specify what action would be taken if the course is not properly measured as per the guidelines of world body, IAAF.
