The Gor Mahia team lost 2-0 to Ulinzi

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 19 – Champions elect Gor Mahia succumbed to a second successive defeat following their 2-0 defeat against visiting Ulinzi Stars in a Kenyan Premier League match played at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Elvis Nandwa struck both goals, finding the first in the 37th minute before completing a brace two minute into the second half.

The loss comes three days after falling 1-0 away to bottom side Thika United.

K’Ogalo’s off the pitch woes are haunting the record KPL champions as the players boycotted training due to unpaid August salary and bonuses.

Speaking after the match, Gor head coach Dylan Kerr said;

“Its not my fault that is all I could say thank you,” Kerr said.

The win was a major boost for Ulinzi Stars ahead of their Sunday FKF Shield semi-final against Kariobangi Sharks and head coach Dunstan Nyaudo was a pleased man.

“Great results, we were looking for this win so that it can propel us in the weekend Shield semifinal. I rested few players but definitely you will see them over the weekend. Gor have already taken the championship so we need to work externally hard to see we represent Kenya in continental football,” Nyaundo said.

The win lifted the Soldiers to fourth on 50 points, five behind second placed Bandari.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 20 – The national women’s volleyball team Malkia Strikers leave the country on Thursday evening for Japan ahead of the FIVB Women’s World Championship which serves off across six hosts cities September 29.

The team will proceed for a week-long training camp in the Japanese city of Kobe to fine tune their readiness for the world showpiece before travelling to their competition city Hamamatsu.

The team has been in residential training for the past two months and head coach Japheth Munala says they feel ready to go and conquer the world with their eyes fixed on at least getting to the second round.

“Everything has been okay and the little injuries we have had have all healed. We have done enough training from June with minimal problems and we feel that all we have put in is enough to take us at least to the second round,” Munala told Capital Sport.

Malkia Strikers are in Pool D alongside 2014 bronze medalists Brazil, European giants Serbia, Kazakhstan Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The top four teams from the six-team pool will progress to the second round.

The team is confident that they can be able to maneuver and win against at least three teams and book a spot in the second stage.

“If you look at Kazakhstan, Dominican Republic and probably Puerto Rico, those are teams that we can say probably we are on the same level. We played against them when we participated in the Grand Prix and looking back at that experience, we can beat them,” Munala said.

His words were echoed by setter Jane Wacu who was also part of the team that represented Kenya in the last World Championship also held in Japan in 2010.

“To be very honest, Brazil and Serbia are teams that we cannot match. They are way superior than us and their experience cannot be compared to us. But Puerto Rico and Kazakhstan are two teams that we can fight off with and win. If we do our best and play to our highest levels, I have no doubt we will be in the second round,” the setter who has had professional stints in France and Seychelles said.

The last time Kenya participated in the World Cup, they ended up not earning even a single set and finished bottom of the six team pile.

But looking at the team now, Munala feels they are in the best of shape to fight and improve on that performance.

“We will get sets and wins, rest assured. We have worked hard in training and improved on our reception, blocks and back court defense which were some of the weak areas we had,” Munala offered.

His sentiments were shared by Wacu who added; “In 2010, we didn’t have much experience but looking at the team now, I can say we are better. We have two new girls in the team who played in the African Championships and they bring in a lot of positives in the team. They have very good height and have made the team stronger.”

“Reception and defense were our weak areas but now, we are way better. We have improved a lot,” she added.

Over the last week of training, the team upped their program by playing men’s teams in their friendly games and surprisingly won one against Strathmore men while they lost against the Kenya Prisons thrice.

But despite the losses, head coach Munala says the games have given them a tougher edge as they have been able to play against tough opposition which puts them almost on the same level with the tough European teams they will face in Japan.

Skipper Mercy Moim says the friendly games have been more than helpful to the team.

“They have really helped us because when for example we play against Prisons, we say that is Brazil, when we play against Strathmore, we say that is Serbia. They are hard hitting just like the teams we will face and so it has given us a lot of experience and courage,” Moim said.

Wacu who missed two weeks of training with a finger injury which needed a minor surgery also insisted it was more than vital to play the men’s teams, but notes that in future, the government should play a vital role to help the teams play European or even North African opponents as build up.

“You see, teams like like Cameroon are training in Brazil and they play the likes of Italy in friendly matches, They are gaining more than us. If we play against the local women’s clubs here at home, it is not good because we know each other very well and competitively, we don’t gain,” she noted.

“At least when we play the men’s teams, it is better because they give us almost the same intensity as the likes of Serbia, Brazil etc. But in future if we can get to even play the likes of Egypt, Cuba or even Cameroon, it will be better for us,” she added.

After their week long training in Japan where they will play friendly matches against local clubs, the team will proceed to Hamamatsu where they serve off their campaign against Kazakhstan on the opening day of the championship, September 29.

They will face Serbia the day after then Puerto Rico and Brazil before finishing up their pool campaign on October 4 against the Dominican Republic.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 20 – The national football team Harambee Stars reaped from their 1-0 victory over Ghana in the 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier, climbing five places in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday.

Kenya now sits 107 after earning 1204 points with their Malawi 1-0 friendly win not counting much since their opponents were placed 123rd, 11 places below Harambee Stars.

On the other hand, the Black Stars of Ghana dropped six placed to occupy 51st from 45th.

In the CECAFA region, Kenya’s opponent in the 2019 AFCON qualifier improved from position 151 to 149 courtesy of a 1-0 over Sierra Leone on the same weekend Kenya upset Ghana.

Sierra Leone was just a position ahead of Kenya by one slot but due to the loss they are fell to 114.

Uganda remains the top despite moving a place down to 83rd following a 0-0 draw with Tanzania in an AFCON qualifier.

Kenya is second in the region, Sudan (132), Rwanda (137), Tanzania (140), Burundi (148), Ethiopia (149), South Sudan (158), Djibouti (196), Eritrea & Somalia (206) take up the next positions in the region.

In Africa, Tunisia takes the lead at position 23 after moving a place up followed by Senegal (25), DR Congo (40), Morocco (45) while former champions Nigeria closes the top five in the standings at position 48.

Globally, Belgium has moved to the top of the ranking by relegating world champions France to second spot.

After decisive wins against Scotland (4-0) in a friendly match and Iceland (3-0) in a UEFA Nations League fixture played in early September, Belgium have finished on the same number of points as France, but took the lead by a few decimal points to reclaim top spot, which they last occupied from November 2015 to April 2016, while being coached by Marc Wilmots who was later replaced by Roberto Martinez.

Brazil, Croatia and Uruguay close the top five.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 20 – Sony Sugar assistant captain Enock Agwanda became the first player ever to win back-to-back SportPesa/LG/SJAK Player of the Month awards after being named the best player for August at the Awendo Green Stadium on Thursday.

The former Gor Mahia and Sofapaka forward picked up his second successive award after continuing with his sparkling scoring form last month.

He got a unanimous majority vote to beat Nakumatt’s Joe Waithira in the poll conducted by Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Football Committee.

“It wasn’t an easy decision to rejoin Sony more so after many people had written me off. But the results are there for everyone to see. We were in a difficult position when I came back but we have already made the impossible possible,” said Agwanda.

“It is a great feeling to become the first player to win this award twice. I thank God for everything and the coach for instilling confidence in me. Our target still remains to flnish top five.

Sony Sugar’s Enock Agwanga became the first ever player to win the SJAK/SportPesa Player of the Month Award back-to-back.

Sony coach Paul Odhiambo was equally elated at Agwanda’s recognition.

“I thank God for his (Agwanda) recognition. He deserves it and it is a morale booster to the team.  We had targeted top five and we believe it is still achievable. Destiny is in our own hands,” said Odhiambo.

Agwanda, who rejoined Sony in the mid-season from Ushuru FC, scored four goals and provided two assists to his team-mates as the Awendo-based side continued with their resurgence in the Kenyan Premier League.

The burly striker netted his first goal of the month from the spot in their 3-1 victory over relegation threatened Thika United on August 5 before scoring the lone goal of the match away to Ulinzi Stars (0-1).

He went on to hit a brace against Kariobangi Sharks (2-0) to take his season tally to nine goals as he helped Sony to move into the top half of the table after ending the month with a barren draw against Tusker.

For his impressive performance, Agwanda was awarded Sh100 000, a trophy and a 49-inch LG TV courtesy of the sponsors, while the tenth placed Paul Odhiambo’s side team got an extra Sh100,000 for their contribution to the player’s exploits.

Agwanda couldn’t hide his joy after receiving the award for a month he played with a hamstring injury. He thanked his teammates and the technical bench for making their relegation survival possible.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 20 – Seven Kenyan coaches stand a chance to attend an exclusive new training camp with Arsenal’s top youth coaches in London after being shortlisted for the WorldRemit Future Stars football coaching programme.

The seven Kenyans are Kariobangi Sharks U17 coach Beldine Odemba, Hamisi Mohamed, Ligi Ndogo’s Iddi Badi, Kevin Oduor Akumu from Kibera, Mutinda Irene Mutindi, Samira Schwarz and Stephen Githinji.

The Kenyans are among 25 shortlisted applicants for the WorldRemit Future Stars football coaching programme launched in August to offer local coaches from across Africa the chance to attend an exclusive new training camp with Arsenal’s top youth coaches in London.

From the 25 shortlisted applicants, five finalists chosen by the judges will go through to a public vote, where they will compete for the chance to train with Arsenal Soccer Schools coaches.

The five finalists will be featured on the futurestars.worldremit.com website and voting will open in the last week of September.

Kenya was the most represented country in the shortlist, with 1 in 3 coaches coming from the country. The entries reflected a range of ways that football is being used to address social challenges including gang violence and drug addiction.

Head of East and Central Africa at WorldRemit Sharon Kinyanjui said: “The high volume of Kenyans in the shortlist is a clear indication of the importance of youth football coaching in the community and the power of sport to bring people together.”

“I was particularly delighted to see so many compelling entries from women coaches and hope that their success will also encourage more women to participate in football. The strength of all the entries from Kenya as a very promising sign for the country’s future,” she added.

From the 25 shortlisted applicants, five finalists chosen by the judges will go through to a public vote, where they will compete for the chance to train with Arsenal Soccer Schools coaches.

Simon McManus of Arsenal Soccer Schools said: “The standard of entries was very impressive, making this a real challenge for the judges. The Arsenal Way is all about thinking about others, getting the detail right and going above and beyond expectations.”

“We were very impressed with how strongly this commitment to outstanding coaching was reflected by Kenyans. The work these participants have already done in developing their coaching shows the immense potential of coaching in Kenya to inspire confidence and encourage positive social change,” he added.

“Having the most successful women’s side in England, Arsenal is actively involved in encouraging participation in the women’s game. We see the strength of the entries from women coaches as a very encouraging sign for the sport. We are eagerly anticipating the final results and look forward to welcoming the successful coach to London.”

The programme is a new initiative set up by WorldRemit, the official online money transfer partner of Arsenal Football Club, to recognise and reward the valuable contribution that youth coaches make to the communities they serve.

The programme received over 700 applications in one week from across Africa. A shortlist of 25 coaches has been selected by a judging panel of representatives from Arsenal and WorldRemit. In recognition of their hard work, the 25 shortlisted coaches will receive official Arsenal shirts for their youth team.

WorldRemit will pay for the successful applicant to travel to London in October to attend the Future Stars camp.

The programme will equip them with coaching skills which they can take back to build a lasting legacy of coaching excellence in their country.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 21 – Nairobi Polo Club (NPC) Vice Chairman Raphael Nzomo is upbet the country will witness the best Polo in this weekend’s Kenya International 14-Goal Polo Tournament at the Nairobi Club.

True to his words Nzomo, who will once again captain defending champions, Samurai, says the team has flown in South African hard hitter and handicap five player, Lance Watson, for the international.

Nzomo, said his team is lucky to have secured the services of the high profile goal poacher who featured for his country at the world cup in Malaysia last year.

“I feel honored to play alongside Watson. He is a ferocious player on pitch, other contestants quake in their boots at the thought of meeting the beef farmer from Underberg,” Nzomo underlined.

Watson, who has had professional stints in England, Argentina and West Africa will be expected to help Samurai, composed of George McCorkell (handicap 3.5),Mbu Ngugi (2.5) and Nzomo (2.5) defend the prestigious  cup they won in 2017 after emerging champions in the round robin encounter.

The team edged R.J Polo 7.5-6, Royal Salute 4.5-4 and Samsung 7.5-5 on their way to clinching the trophy in 2017.

“I’m bringing with me an explosive version of an attacking polo never seen before here,” underscored Watson who is in Kenya for the first time.

Samurai will open the contest against Space and Style who have beefed up their side with former South African national team striker, Buster MacKenzie (4) and Jamie Murray (5) who is the best-rated player in Kenya now.

MacKenzie used to give his opponents goose bumps in the past whenever he saddled while Murray has had an impressive polo engagements in England, Thailand, Australia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Barbados.

“I predict that our opening fixture against Space and Style will be fiery because MacKenzie and Murray are all seasoned players who never gives up.

“Our side has also prepared well, we have a fresh team from the one that competed in the Six-Goal championships last weekend.

“We have to win the first game to have a chance in the tournament,” highlighted Nzomo who is also the NPC Vice Chairman.

White Cap, who are equally up to the task, have the bragging rights after flying in Mackenzie’s son, Chris, who is the highest rated player in the competition at handicap seven.

Chris has urged his teammates, Joss Craig (1.5), Kimoi Moi (2) and Archie Voorspuy (3.5), to cultivate unity in their quest for glory.

Another revered South African player, Gareth Evans (5) will captain Four of A Kind that has Craig Millar (3.5),Tarquin Gross (3) and Tiva Gross (2.5).

Led by former Hannover Marathon winner, Jacob Chesari Korir and his compatriots Albert Korir, Kipsang Kipkemoi, Rotich Nicholas and Kacherian Philemon, the athletes confirmed plans to provide stiff competition to an elite field of full marathon runners entered for the event.

The Kenyan runners will be gunning for a win, at the event which enjoys pride of place as Africa’s only IAAF Gold label status marathon.

The Kenyan contingent’s confidence has been heightened by the absence of the event’s defending champion, Ethiopia’s Asefa Negewo who will not be taking part this weekend.

Despite his absence, the 2018 line up is arguably the most formidable entry field to date for the event sponsored by the Sanlam Group-Africa’s largest non-bank financial services firm.

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon which is part of the South Africa Marathon Championships events will also serve as an Olympic Qualifier this year for the country’s elite runners led by Stephen Mokoka.

Attesting to Kenya’s growing importance in the race, the media conference in Cape Town, this morning, was presided over by Sanlam Kenya Group CEO, Patrick Tumbo who expressed Sanlam Group’s commitment to continue nurturing sporting talent in the continent.

“Sanlam is proud to sponsor Africa’s only Gold Label marathon, which gives our top athletes the opportunity to race against the world’s best on home soil. Our partnership in this prestigious event on the IAAF African calendar continues to grow, creating value and inspiration for the people and communities across our continent and a legacy for generations to come by sustainably conserving our environment, encouraging healthy living and bringing people together,” said Tumbo.

Alongside Mokoka and Chesari, Kenya’s Korir will also be gunning for the top prize buoyed by his recent performance at the Otsu Lake Biwa Marathon in Japan earlier this year.

Korir, has previously won the 2017 Vienna Marathon win, in a sub 2:09 time. Kipsang Kipkemoi who boasts a best of 2:08.26 from the Sevilla Marathon in 2017 will also be using the Sanlam Cape Town event to better his performance this year.

With such an incredible amount of depth at the front end of the race, it is no surprise that focus will be on the “racing snakes”.

However, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is not only about those who will be chasing titles and prizes and fast times the event clearly caters for those who want to have fun or are chasing their personal goals.

A whopping 22 000 plus runners will run their journey in the trail races, the 10km Peace Run, the 5km fun run and the marathon over the weekend of 22-23 September.

As part of its RUN4CHANGE Legacy Program, the 2018 Peace torch will again be brought to the event by the Sri Chinmoy oneness-home PEACE Run, which has been carried since 1987, visited 155 countries and run more than 632,000 km (395,000 miles).

Throughout race week, the Peace torch will be showcased at schools and will be an intricate part of the start of both the 10km and the marathon on Sunday 23 September.

It will be lit outside the Waterclub and taken up Beach Road to the marathon start by Francois Pienaar wearing a race bib with 46664 as his race number, in honour of Nelson Mandela.

He will be accompanied by various dignitaries, in turn accompanies to a live rendition of Johnny Clegg’s “Asimbonanga”.
