NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 5 – Paul Murunga has described it as ‘the best news in the world’ after the Kenya Rugby Union on Friday afternoon confirmed that the Homeboyz RFC tactician has been appointed to coach the national sevens team for a period of two years.

Murunga was a top contender for the job having been among the final shortlist of six coaches interviewed for the job including four foreigners and the Union on Friday confirmed they had picked on Pau mostly based on his prior experience in the team.

“This is the best feeling in the world and I thank God that I have been given this huge responsibility to lead the national team. It is a chance for growth and one of the biggest achievements in my life. I have been there before as an assistant coach but to be given the top job is a huge thing,” Murunga told Capital Sport.

Murunga worked with former boss Benjamin Ayimba who just a fortnight ago tipped him to take over the job saying he was the most qualified.

During that spell, the two guided Kenya to their first ever Main Cup conquest at the World Sevens Series when they made history by beating Fiji to win the Singapore 7s Main Cup title in the 2015/16 season.

-Homeboyz dominating

Murunga has proved himself with Homeboyz RFC winning the national sevens circuit twice in three years and this season, he won with a comfortable margin, guiding the team to five finals of the six legs and winning four of them.

And as he prepares to take on the job, the tactician says he is ready for the job.

“I have been there before and I know how the system works. I know the responsibility is big but I am equal to the task. We start with the Africa 7s then Safari 7s and I hope they will give us a good foundation,” Murunga added.

The tactician will work with Mwamba and Kenya Lionesses’ Kevin Wambua as assistant coach while Geoffrey Kimani who was also present when he was assistant two years ago will retain his slot as the strength and conditioning coach.

“This is a strong team. Kevin has done very well with the national women’s team and they are now the best in Africa. If we all bring our experiences together I know we will form a very strong technical bench,” further stated Murunga.

-Building a team

He has however noted that his focus will be on building a good team with depth, insisting the team has to bring in fresh and young players who can serve the team for a long period of time.

So far, the Union has not contracted players for the new season though outgoing coach Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu had called in a squad of 33 which has been whittled down to 21 after the National Sevens Series.

“For me, the most important thing is about building a team for the future. Not even about the immediate accolades or successes. We want to build a big national team with depth instead of depending on a few players year in year out,” Murunga noted.

“It is important to have a huge pool of players who can play consistently at the international level and the good thing is that we have several young and talented players coming through the ranks,” the tactician noted.

His tenure will begin immediately after the Africa Sevens next week and he hopes to travel with the team to Tunisia to pick a few lessons and enable smooth transition from one regime to another.

Coach Migné, in the meantime, has expressed optimism that Stars will give a good account of themselves while noting that captain Victor Wanyama’s inclusion is a big boost to the team’s pursuit for a second appearance at the continental showpiece.

“Of course it won’t be easy against Ethiopia since they are also equally strong, but my players are up to the task and I am confident we will get a positive result,” said coach Migné.

“We won against Ghana without our captain, it will be morale boosting for us to also win with him. He is one of our most experienced players and will be crucial for us against Ethiopia,” he added.

The match has been slated for Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at the Bahir Dar Stadium, with the return leg set to be played on Sunday, October 14, 2018, at the MISC Kasarani.

Match day two action at the Catholic University grounds saw the hosts CUEA register a 23-6 Pool B win over the University of Eldoret.

A further Yatich penalty brought UoE to within two points of CUEA, the scores reading 8-6 at this point.

The red hot Okwach landed his fifth try of the tournament for a 13-6 lead before Brian Ayimba’s penalty and a penalty try secured the result for Catholic.

The day’s second fixture saw the Egerton University edge Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology 8-5 in what was a close contest.

KCB beat Talanta to earn return to KPL

Dennis Gicheru leads celebrations afte scoring for KCB in their National Super League match against Talanta as they earned a return to the KPL on October 7, 2018. PHOTO/Timothy Oloblu

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 7 – Dennis Gicheru and Simon Abuko scored in the final 10 minutes as KCB FC beat a stubborn FC Talanta 2-0 at the Camp Toyoyo Ground on Sunday to earn promotion back to the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) after three years.

Gicheru poked home at the back post from a Dennis Ng’ang’a freekick with nine minutes left before Simon Abuko slotted home from the penalty spot in added time to finally break a stubborn FC Talanta as they earned an unassailable lead in second position.

The three points will ensure KCB’s final match against Nairobi Stima next weekend will be a mere formality.

The bankers moved to 75 points in the National Super League (NSL) standings, eight ahead of third placed Nairobi Stima who will be playing Kenya Police in the other NSL match later Sunday.

“I am really pleased to have scored today in such an important match to help the team get back to the league. It was a tough match but we knew when we get one goal, things will be easy. I can’t really explain how it feels because we have fought for this so much,” goal scorer Gicheru said.

Amazingly, Gicheru scored one of the four goals for Wazito FC last year when they beat Kenya Police 4-1 in Narok to earn promotion to the KPL which now means he has scored in both crucial matches and earned promotion with two different teams in consecutive years.

Head coach Elvis Ayany, a former player of the bankers was in cloud nine after sealing the slot.

“It has been a tough season and every game has been like a final. Over the last three years we have come very close but lost it in the final four games. This time round, we were very serious in every game and we did not underrate anyone,” Ayany pointed out.

After being frustrated by a high defending Talanta, coached by former KCB boss Abdallah Juma, the bankers upped the tempo in the second half.

On the hour mark, they came inches close when Samuel Mwangi’s venomous strike from distance was finger tipped over the bar by Talanta keeper Joel Bataro.

Mwangi had come in after 35 minutes replacing Shami Kibwana who had found it tough to maintain the tempo with the scorching mid-morning sun and the blazing Toyoyo turf taking a toll on him.

KCB were almost punished in the 70th minute when a defensive blunder by Isaac Okello gifted Emmanuel Mogaka the ball at the edge of the area, but the Talanta man’s shot from range was well collected by KCB keeper Omar Adisa.

The bankers had a glorious opportunity with quarter of an hour left when an industrious Chrispinus Onyango did well on the left to lay in a cross that was met by Kennedy Owino, but the latter’s shot with acres of space ahead of him came against the side-netting.

The search finally yielded fruit with nine minutes left when Gicheru poked the ball home at the backpost when Ng’ang’a’s in-swinging freekick evaded a forest of bodies.

Former AFC Leopards winger Simon Abuko then sealed the win in added time when he slotted home from the penalty spot after Mwangi was brought down inside the box by Brian Okeyo.

Nakumatt lose to Vihiga, slump to play-off

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 7 – Nakumatt FC will contend the promotion and relegation play-off with either Nairobi Stima or Ushuru FC after losing 2-0 to Vihiga United on Sunday evening at the Ruaraka Complex.

Heading into the final day of the season, there were up to five teams who were in danger of dropping to the play off slot. Vihiga, Nzoia Sugar, Chemelil Sugar, Posta Rangers and Nakumatt were all staring at the possibility of dropping off the top tier.

But, Vihiga did themselves a world of favor beating Nakumatt with Posta Rangers who occupied the play-off slot heading into the final match day playing to a 0-0 draw with Kakamega Homeboyz in Kakamega.

In the other matches, Chemelil Sugar played to a 1-1 draw with Kariobangi Sharks at the Camp Toyoyo as Nzoia Sugar produced a 2-0 win over AFC Leopards in Mumias.

With the result, Nzoia moved to 13th, with 41 points, Chemelil 14th with 39 while Posta Rangers finished with 38 points at 15th, just one above Nakumatt who slumped to the dreaded position 16.

The relegation battle of the weekend though was at the Ruaraka Complex where Vihiga and Nakumatt, separated by three points in the standings faced off. While Nakumatt needed a win at all costs, even a point would have sufficed for Vihiga.

Within the opening quarter hour of the game, not wanting to take anything to chance, Vihiga had already put one foot into survival grabbing a quick 2-0 lead thanks to some schoolboy play from Nakumatt.

Amos Kigadi broke the deadlock in the fourth minute thanks to a well-executed counter from the visitors. Nakumatt winger Timonah Wanyonyi attempted to pass a freekick low from a good scoring range and it instead was intercepted at the wall.

Kigadi was sent through and he raced away, skipping past keeper Philip Odhiambo before slotting into an empty net.

Nothing was going right for Nakumatt. Their passing was awful and they lost ball after ball, the bumpy nature of the Ruaraka pitch not helping matters for them.

They found themselves 2-0 down after 11 minutes, Vihiga hitting the second through Michael Isabwa.

The visitors doubled their tally in text-book route one football. With only three touches of the ball from deep in their half, they were on the second goal.

Vihiga United’s Bernard Ochieng heads the ball away under pressure from Nakumatt FC’s Jack Bruno during their Kenyan Premier League clash at the Ruaraka Complex on October 7, 2018. PHOTO/Timothy Olobulu

Skipper Bernard Ochieng struck a freekick from the edge of their own box to the right of the opponent’s box, Kigadi rising to knock down the ball and Isabwa finishing off with a sweeping volley that left keeper Odhiambo dazed.

With danger looming and the possibility of the play-off now more real than ever, Nakumatt started getting into the game and pressing Vihiga in their own half.

In the 25th minute, skipper Kevin Thairu’s shot from distance after being teed up by Joe Waithira but the Nakumatt keeper made a good save. The shot stopper was on top of his game once again on the half hour mark when he leaped well to his left to parry away a Kyata Amani freekick.

Nakumatt kept punching in the Vihiga backline to get a goal back and some adrenaline to get all the points, but they could not get a goal.

Five minutes to the break, they came close once again when Amani’s cross from the right was met by Waithira’s header, but it deflected behind for a corner.

In the second half Nakumatt came in with some bit of increased pressure, the half time pep-talkby their American coach Melis Medo seemingly doing some magic.

They chased from the onset and came close in the 70th minute when impressive John Avire’s shot from the left went inches wide.

But, Vihiga were sitting back and waiting for the opportune time to strike. They almost did that in the 73rd minute when a long ball landed on Kigadi at the edge of the Nakumatt box but his shot was turned behind by Nakumatt keeper Odhiambo.

Minutes later, Chris Masinza broke the offside trap well on the right, squared the ball to Kigadi who was at the edge of the six yard box, but the striker could not hit the ball on target under pressure from Faina Jacobs.

Nakumatt dug deeper in the final minutes of the game, but their finishing was not up to par. They sunk their heads in the ground at the sound of the referee’s final whistle, knowing only too well the play-off is a lottery they need to play with utmost care.

Kosgei sets new PB to win Chicago Marathon

CHICAGO, USA, Oct 7 – Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei raced away to an incredible win at the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, shedding off nearly two minutes off her personal best to win the race in two hours, 18 minutes and 25 seconds.

Kosgei, 24, who finished second last year broke away with a huge lead near the end of the race, far outpacing her closest competitor, Ethiopia’s Roza Dereje.

“I feel OK because last year I was position two. Today I had a bit of an injury but I broke my time. I was injured but the problem, the injury, I swallowed the pain,” an excited Kosgei said after the race.

The 24-year old wowed fans last year with a second place finish in Chicago, running the sixth fastest time ever run in the Windy City race. She said she enjoyed the rain that fell on runners during this year’s race.

-Enjoy rain

“I enjoy when I see the rain. I feel like I enjoy the race more when it’s raining than when it’s not,” she added.

She opened her 2018 season with a boom, finishing second in London. With Sunday’s race, Kosgei has finished first or second in eight of her nine career marathons.

She was among seven African runners that pulled ahead by more than 70 seconds after the first 5km and doubled that margin by the 10km mark. Kosegi surged ahead by 45 seconds at 35km and stretched her lead to the finish line.

Dereje led an Ethiopian 2-3 finish coming home second in two hours, 21 mionutes and 18 seconds while compatriot Shure Demise finished third in two hours, 22 minutes and 15 seconds.

Two-time champion Florence Kiplagat, returning to competition after dropping out of last year’s race with a thigh injury, was fourth, 7:33 adrift.

Meanwhile, Britain’s Mo Farah won the men’s race with a spectacular finishing surge, shattering the European record to serve notice his distance-racing dominance is far from over.

In only his third marathon start, Farah crossed the finish line in 2hr 5min 11sec in cool and rainy conditions to defeat Ethiopia’s Mosinet Geremew by 13sec with Japan’s Suguru Osako third in 2:05:50.

-Kirui fade

The world and Olympic 5,000 and 10,000-meter champion, who switched to the marathon distance a year ago, became the first British man to win at Chicago since Paul Evans in 1996.

Kenya’s Geoffrey Kirui, who won the 2017 Boston Marathon and World Marathon Championships crowns, faded before 40km to set up the final duel.

Farah smashed the former European mark of 2:05:48 set by Norwegian Sondre Nordstad Moen in Fukuoka last December and easily improved on his former British record and personal best of 2:06:22 from a third-place showing at London in April.

The 35-year-old Somalia-born Briton stayed with the lead pack most of the race, fell back at 30 kilometers but charged directly back among the leaders then outlasted every rival to the finish, dispatching Geremew with a strong closing kick.

In the first major marathon since Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge smashed the world record in Berlin last month with a time of 2:01:39, Farah stole the show in what was billed as a battle with his former training partner, 2017 Chicago winner Galen Rupp of the United States.

-Windy conditions

Farah and Rupp weathered the wet and windy conditions that greeted 45,000 runners, hanging in a pack behind the pacesetters that battled early headwinds.

Rupp and Farah, who once trained together in Oregon under Alberto Salazar, stayed together until the American slowed at 35km and slipped from the lead pace.

Rupp, who still trains with Salazar, finished fifth, 70 seconds off Farah’s time and 24 seconds adrift of fourth place Kenneth Kipkemoi of Kenya.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 8 – Kenya Harlequins on Monday confirmed the return of Charles Cardovillis to the team’s set up as head coach after leaving his role at Kabras earlier in the year, having gone to Western Kenya to take up the job last year.

Cardovillis left the Ngong road stable for a new challenge at Kabras in May last year but his projected two year stay at the club as the Director of Rugby was cut short in June 2018.

“We’d officially like to welcome back our prodigal son Charlie Cardo who’d taken a short trek across the country. Charles Cardovillis was named and confirmed as Head Coach of the Mighty Quins!” said a Tweet from the club.

“No place like home.  I’m excited. There is a lot of work to be done in a short period, but I’m up for the challenge,” Cardovillis said in an interview with Raga House.

The tactician will be immediately thrown into the deep end with his first task being this weekend when Quins take on Ngong Road rivals Impala Saracens in the quarter finals of this year’s Impala Flooodlit tournament at Impala Grounds.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better draw. Great friends off the pitch but the biggest rival on it.  Been with the boys for two weeks now, still loads to do, but there’s really no extra motivation I can give the boys. The word Impala will have them drooling,” the tactician, fondly referred to as Cardo noted.

He has also said he is ready for the pressure that comes with being at the helm of the Ngong Road club, noting having been there before, he is ready for the pressure cooker.

“Arguably, Kenya 7s aside, it’s the most high-pressure job in Kenya Rugby and sport in Kenya. My immediate goals are to get some proper sound structures in place.  Get the boys playing a beautiful brand of rugby and ultimately put some trophies in the cabinet. In terms of players I have to make sure our current crop is happy. Happy players give you results,” the tactician further stated.

After Floodies the tactician will shift his target to the Kenya Cup which they have not won since 2012.

Quins are in conference A of the 2018/2019 season alongside champions KCB, Homeboyz, Mwamba, Nondies and Oilers.

Their first game of the season on Saturday November 17 will be against Mwamba at home before heading out to Oilers a week later.

The tactician will look to transmit some of the success he had with Kabras in his short stay, having led them to the national sevens circuit overall crown deposing Homeboyz while leading the team to a second consecutive Kenya final where they narrowly lost to KCB.

Harambee Stars head coach Sebastien Migne passes on instructions before a training session at the Bahir Dar Stadium in Ethjiopia

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 8 – Skipper Victor Wanyama led a host of 12 other foreign based players who touched down in bahir, Dar, Ethiopia on Monday ahead of Wednesday’s crucial 2019 African Cup of Nations Qualifier against the Walya Antelopes.

Wanyama who missed last month’s 1-0 home win against Ghana at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani as he had just returned from injury was the first to arrive alongside Kazakhstan based Paul Were while they rest joined on later with Japan-based Michael Olunga also arriving after a long flight.

The first group which included five local based players and the coaching team arrived in Ethiopia Saturday with the final group of local based players who were involved in Sunday’s Kenyan Premier League matches travelling Monday morning.

Apart from Wanyama, head coach Sebastien Migne will also have defender Brian Mandela back after serving his one match suspension and he is expected to be a direct swap for Gor Mahia’s Joash Onyango who was red carded against Ghana.

Meanwhile, Sierra Leone who are currently under a ban by FIFA following government interference might be reinstated after a meeting involving the Isha Johansen-led federation, sports ministry and the country’s President earlier today.

Johanse had been ousted as the country’s FA by the government attracting wrath from FIFA, but Monday evening’s meeting might resolve the impasse.

Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama with teammates before a training session at the Bahir Dar Stadium in Ethiopia

All teams in Group F are currently on three points, that is if the FIFA ban will be reversed. If the ban is upheld, then Ethiopia will lose the three points they picked last month meaning they will be on zero points.

Kenya has three and a ban on Sierra Leone will mean the 2-1 loss they suffered in the opening match day will count for nothing.

Nonetheless, Migne and his charges say they minimum target in the back to back ties against Ethiopia is four points, results that will put them firmly in contention for a place in next year’s Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Dejected Medo tears into Nakumatt bosses

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 8 – Nakumatt FC head coach Melis Medo has torn into the club’s management over the team’s failure to automatically cling onto the Kenyan Premier League (KPL), with the side now faced with a play-off to determine whether or not they will continue playing into the top tier.

Nakumatt slumped into the play-off after Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Vihiga United in Ruaraka with the coach among other things lamenting that the players have gone three months without pay while according to him a sponsor has been ready to step in, but the club’s managers have been ‘lazy’.

“We have a big sponsor waiting I don’t know why they don’t want to change the name… Delay delay delay delay…  I don’t know if its delay or laziness…. I don’t know what they are waiting for and it is costing this team,” the tactician told Capital Sport.

He also took issue with the fact that they could not manage to secure Camp Toyoyo for their decider against Vihiga and had to play at Ruaraka, a pitch he says should not be hosting a KPL game.

He added; “Again, We shouldn’t be playing here. Because of laziness on our part we didn’t register camp Toyoyo. Again, we couldn’t get Thika and we have to play on this pitch in Ruaraka.”

The American born Egyptian coach says it has been difficult to motivate the players with the situation. Despite the club getting a new owner in politician Francis Mureithi, things haven’t gone as well as they would have expected.

“You don’t expect much from players having not been paid for three months. They should earn a trophy as a matter of fact, we showed up fought and did our part. I don’t believe they (Vihiga) were better than us. We just had two mistakes and they scored two goals.”

“For Gor Mahia, it was only one month and they did not train. For, us, it is three months and we have showed up and fought. These boys are fighters. I will never blame them. Before when we were doing okay, pay was on time and everything was on time. You can’t push them so much for 90 days. Half of the players are locked out of their homes,” Medo added.

The tactician nonetheless is optimistic that if something is done between now and when they take part in the play-off, they will retain their status in the KPL.

Nakumatt will face either Nairobi Stima or Ushuru in the play-off with the National Super League yet to be concluded.

“At this point, it is not me. I did my part, infact I did more than my part but the owner needs to take care of his team. I am sure we will remain in the league if everything is taken care of,” further noted the coach.

Nakumatt’s tribulations started last year when their parent company, supermarket chain Nakumatt Holdings started experiencing financial difficulties.

They were handed a reprieve mid this year when politician Mureithi bought off the club, but despite a good start, things haven’t flown as smooth as was expected.

Promotion a dream come true- KCB’s Ayany

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 8 – Elvis Ayany was a KCB FC player in 2015 when they got relegated from the Kenyan Premier League but three years down the line, he has helped the team get promotion back to the top tier, though this time as the head coach.

The bankers assured themselves of a slot in next year’s top league after beating FC Talanta 2-0 on Sunday cementing their hold on second spot with an eight-point buffer between them and third placed Nairobi Stima.

“I was playing for KCB when we were relegated in 2015 and now I am thankful that I have helped the team gain promotion. It has been like a dream come true for me and I feel so proud of the players and the effort they gave,” the tactician told Capital Sport.

The bankers have previously tried in vain in 2016 and 2017 to return to top flight but on both occasions, they failed to deliver, waning away on the final few weeks of the campaign.

But this season, they prospered where they failed for the last two seasons, putting up a run of five wins on the trot to finally secure their place in top flight with a match to spare.

“This season we did things differently. We took our last seven matches very seriously and we were not underrating any opponent. There was so much togetherness in the squad and cohesion was great. I think that is what made the difference for us,” the tactician noted.

His sentiments were shared by skipper Bethwel Warambo who was part of the squad when they were relegated from the top tier and he says it was a huge relief for him to skipper the side back to the top tier.

“The management sat with me after we were relegated and they convinced me to remain with the team. The plan they had was great and I decided to remain. I am glad that decision proved to be the right one and I am so glad that we have finally made it into the league,” the defender noted.

He added; “Our focus is to get into the league and compete. We cannot afford to be relegated again and that is our first priority. We have a good team and the management has been behind us and we want to reward them with good performances.”

Ayany has meanwhile said he is not in a hurry to draft the team’s strategy for the new season despite a short turnaround with the new campaign kicking off on December 8.

“As at now we just want to celebrate the achievement and we will plan about the new season when the time is right. It is a short period but for us, it will just be like a continuation of the current season,” said the tactician who took over mid-season after the exit of John Kamau.

Kenya’s Hamisi earns Arsenal coaching clinic

Kenyan youth coach Hamisi Mohamed wins a lifetime opportunity to receive coaching clinic from Arsenal FC.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 9 – Kenyan youth tactician Hamisi Mohamed will earn a lifetime opportunity to get coach training from English Premier League giants Arsenal FC after being named the winner of the Future Stars Programme run by WorldRemit.

Competing against five other youth football coaches from across Africa, Hamisi secured over 35% of the votes on futurestars.worldremit.com to win the chance to train with coaches from Arsenal Soccer Schools.

Hamisi will now prepare to travel to London to attend a customized training programme to support him in building a legacy of positive social impact through football in Kenya.

“I am very happy to earn this lifetime opportunity. I thank all the Kenyans for voting for me, this shows that Kenya has a lot of talent in grassroot football. I will come back with experience that I will help my country grow in football and see that one day Kenya qualifies for World Cup,” Hamisi told Capital Sport.

Hamisi, known locally as Coach Kaka, is one of the founders of Young Talents Soccer Academy, a mixed academy in Embul Bul, Ngong.

The academy aims to help children to succeed both on and off the pitch. “We use the power of football to address social issues, to teach them life skills. We want them to learn to respect themselves, to know the effects of drug abuse, the effects of violence and crime,” says Hamisi.

Reflecting the shared values of the two companies, the Future Stars programme was set up by WorldRemit together with Arsenal to acknowledge and reward the valuable contribution of youth coaches to their local communities.

Through the programme, 25 shortlisted coaches have already been granted Arsenal replica shirts for their entire youth squad in recognition of their work.

Andrew Stewart, Managing Director Middle East & Africa at WorldRemit said:

“Our business is all about helping our customers’ financial support for their community to go further. The work of all the coaches in the Future Stars programme has reinforced our belief in the immense potential of sport to inspire positive change and encouraged us to explore further opportunities to support the communities we serve through sport. We hope that this programme will encourage others to follow their example and that this will be only the beginning of a much longer story.”

Hamisi is a founder of Young Talents Soccer Academy, a mixed academy in Embul Bul, Ngong.

Back in 1985, in response to social unrest on London estates, Arsenal became one of the first clubs in the UK to set up a dedicated community team in 1985.

The Young Talents academy emerged from similar origins: Hamisi founded the club over 10 years ago to bring young members of his community together following the post-election violence in Kenya.

As Arsenal’s community has grown, so has the impact of Arsenal in the Community’s work and the team now deliver sport, social and education programmes to over 5,000 individuals each week.

Simon McManus of Arsenal Soccer Schools said:

“Arsenal itself is an example of how the social impact of football can grow from a small local community to an international programme. It is inspiring to us to see how coaches across Africa are using the power of football to support and educate children at the grassroots level and I think there is a lot we can also learn from them.

“Both WorldRemit and Arsenal have grown from humble beginnings to become global businesses, credited with transforming our respective sectors. Now we hope that together we can help Hamisi to play a similarly transformational role in Kenya – perhaps even internationally.”

Eyes on AFCON as Stars battle Walias in Bahir

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 10 – Tuesday evening news that Sierra Leone had failed to meet conditions set by FIFA to lift a suspension on the country has now thrown Group F of the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier into new dimensions.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) tweeted later that the double header pitting the Leone Stars against Ghana’s Black Stars had been called off.

This essentially means that on the road to qualifying for next year’s Cup of Nations, any results picked against the West Africans will be annulled. This means Ethiopia who beat Sierra Leone 1-0 last month will be on zero points while Ghana and Kenya who lost away to the Leone Stars are now on three.

The new development means that Kenya needs at least four points off Ethiopia, who they face in a span of four days, to qualify for next year’s showpiece in Cameroon.

The first leg will be staged at the 60,000-seater Bahir Dar Stadium in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, almost 500km away from the capital city Addis Ababa.

Kenya’s Harambee Stars go into the match tails up after last month’s win over group leaders Ghana in Nairobi and head coach Sebastien Migne has urged his charges to ‘confirm’ that the result against the Black Stars was no mere fluke and pick three points against the Ethiopians.

Harambee Stars head coach Sebastien Migne passes on instructions before a training session at the Bahir Dar Stadium in Ethjiopia

“It was a fantastic result but the most important thing in the high level is to confirm the same kind of performance. It is a tough challenge we have because Ethiopia is a tough team but we will try to compete well,” Migne said on Tuesday evening after the side’s training session in Bahir Dar.

He added; “We are on the way to write a new page for Kenyan football but this is the beginning, we will try to write good book for the future,”

The French tactician says his team is ready for the tie despite a short training period together with most of the players having joined up with the squad on Monday in Bahir Dar.

He expects a tough duel especially with Bahir Dar’s intimidating atmosphere, but the French tactician says he will be happy to play in such an atmosphere.

“I know Ethiopia because I have faced them previously in the World Cup qualification with Congo and I know this stadium has very good atmosphere. It is good for Ethiopia, but also good for football,” the tactician noted.

His sentiments are shared by skipper Victor Wanyama; “We are ready for the match even though we have had less time to train together. But I feel the players are in good shape and we will tackle the match with positivity,” the midfielder said.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia head coach Abraham Mebratu is optimistic his side is in the right frame to pick three points from Kenya and keep their AFCON dream alive.

“We are only thinking about securing maximum points in home soil. All the teams in the group picked three points that made things to start from scratch. All we need to do is win our remaining games,” the tactician noted.

Stars will be stronger heading into the Ethiopia game with four players who were absent for last month’s win over Ghana returning.

Skipper Wanyama is available after gaining match fitness following a month-long injury spell, same as central defender Brian Mandela who is available after serving his one match suspension following a red card against Sierra Leone.

Sensational winger Paul Were is also back in the team after recovering from injury same as midfielder Johannah Omollo who strained his hamstring on the eve of the game against Ghana.

The only absentee will be defender Joash Onyango who is suspended after picking a red card against the Ghanaians in Nairobi.

Migne is expected to stick up to the team that played against Ghana, though wingback Erick ‘Marcelo’ Ouma might be drafted in after impressing in an off-the-bench appearance in the friendly against Malawi.

The headache for the French coach is whether to stick with David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng at the heart of defense after the Sweden based stopper came in following Onyango’s red card or to pull in Brian Mandela instead.

The last time Kenya played in Ethiopia was in 2015 during the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers where they lost 2-0 and missed a penalty.

Kenya Lionesses land Dubai Sevens invite

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 10 – The national women rugby team, the Kenya Lionesses, have landed an invite for the second leg of the World Sevens Series in Dubai which is scheduled for November 29-30.

The Lionesses, crowned African champions earlier in May, will be making their maiden appearance at the World Series having been previously participating on invitational tournaments in Dubai and Hong Kong.

Dubai is now the second leg of the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series after World Rugby introduced the USA Women’s Sevens in Glendale, the new opening round.

The invite is a brilliant way of crowning the year for the Lionesses who have enjoyed so much success, the African title being the crowning moment so far.

Lionesses beat neighbors Uganda 29-7 in the final taking much advantage of the absence of rivals South Africa who had chosen not to participate in the Cup of Nations with their concentration tied on the World Cup.

At the Hong Kong Sevens, the Kevin Wambua coached side reached the final only losing 24-12 to Fiji and were inches close to earning a direct berth as a core team in the series.

They topped Pool B with victories over Canada and Spain and only narrowly lost 28-26 to Australia. They went on to beat Scotland 19-12 in the Cup quarters then beat New Zealand’s Black Ferns 21-12 in the semis and eventually lost the final 24-12 to Fiji.

At the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast Australia, the team finished in sixth place after losing 40-5 to Fiji in the fifth place play-off.

Stars hold Ethiopia to go top of Group F

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 10 – Harambee Stars moved top of Group F in the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers after holding hosts Ethiopia to a barren draw at the Bahir Dar Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The result means Stars go to four points having beaten Ghana last month and a win on Sunday in the return leg at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani will see Kenya inch closer to an AFCON qualification for the first time since 2004.

Stars withstood a tough second half surge by the home side pushed on by a full-to-capacity stadium to pick up the points that pushes them closer to Cameroon.

CAF is yet to decide whether or not results picked by teams against Sierra Leone – who are under FIFA suspension – will stand in the road to qualification.

Sierra Leone were scheduled to play Ghana on Thursday but the game has since been called off.

-Two changes

Head coach Sebastien Migne made two changes from the team that won 1-0 against Ghana last month, skipper Victor Wanyama slotting straight into the starting team for Ismail Gonzalez who started off the bench.

Defender Brian Mandela who was returning to the squad after serving his one match suspension went into the heart of defense to partner Musa Mohammed in the absence of Joash Onyango who is suspended having been sent off against Ghana.

Though Harambee Stars had a conservatist approach to the match, they had the best chances especially in the opening 45. They should have gone to the break 1-0 up but Michael Olunga’s 43rd minute goal was cancelled as referee Bakary Gassama adjudged him to have fouled an Ethiopian defender before scoring.

It was the Ethiopians who threatened first, Getaneh Kebede having a second minute chance turned behind for a corner by Patrick Matasi after some good change of passes on the left.

On the turn, Olunga forced Ethiopian keeper Samson Asefa to turn the ball out for a corner after he rose high at the back post to connect to an Abud Omar cross from the left.

Ethiopia kept the possession as Kenya played behind the ball and they had a chance on the quarter hour with a freekick from range but Gatuoch Panom shot just wide.

-Stars chances

Stars had two brilliant back to back chances which should have been buried in the least.

In the 20th minute, Eric Johannah sent Olunga away on the left but the striker’s effort was saved by Asefa. Five minutes later, Skipper Wanyama sent Johannah through with a brilliant defense splitting pass, but the Sweden based midfielder curled the ball wide with only the keeper to beat.

A minute later, another chance presented itself when Johannah sent Ovellah Ochieng through on the right but Asefa was on point once again to make a super block at his near post.

Having thrice dodged bullets, the Walias sought more urgency, looking for that one goal to send the fully packed Bahir Dar Stadium buzzing.

In the 29th minute, another neat interchange of passes between the Ethiopians saw Bekele break into the box, but the diminutive midfielder’s final shot came off the side netting.

-Two substitutions

Migne started the second half by pulling out Johannah who had struggled to make hgis presence felt and in his place came Ismail Athuman Gonzalez. The change meant Gonzalez and Dennis Odhiambo paired in midfield while Wanyama stepped upfront.

Harambee Stars left back Abud Omar tries to clear the ball as Ethiopian rightback Abdulkerim Mohammed attempts to block during their 2019 AFCON Qualifier at the Bahir Dar Stadium on October 10, 2018. PHOTO/Courtesy

Seven minutes into the half, Migne would be forced to another change with Omar coming off with a suspected groin injury and his place taken by Erick ‘Marcelo’ Ouma.

The Ethiopians pinned Kenya in their own half, playing dangerous balls into the box but their finishing left a lot to be desired.

They came very close in the 66th minute when Bekele took a shot on the first time volley after a long ball from deep in defense found him inside the box, but his shot came off the outside of the upright, a let off for Stars.

Migne’s side kept defending deep with Olunga left an isolated man upfront, not much of balls coming his way. After 72 minutes, the French tactician decided to spice up things in attack by bringing in speedy winger Paul Were.

-Good save Matasi

But still, the home side kept pressing and in the 82nd minute, Matasi was forced into a good save to keep away a shot from Kebede from distance.

The home side thought they had scored in the 83rd minute when Abebo Reshad tapped in at the back post from an Abdulkerim Mohammed cross but the second assistant referee had his flag up for offside.

Stars had to manage the game with Ethiopia increasing the pressure and keeper Matasi played his role by slowing down play.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 10 – Harambee Stars head coach Sebastien Migne says he was content with the single point picked from his side’s 0-0 draw with Ethiopia on Wednesday evening in a 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Bahir Dar Stadium.

With the draw, Stars moved to the top of Group F with four points ahead of the return leg on Sunday at the Kasarani Stadium which the tactician has termed as a ‘Cup Final’.

We missed some opportunities in the first half and after that it was difficult especially because we played against 12 players. The fans were amazing and the atmosphere made it difficult for sure,” the tactician said after the match.

He added; “With the fans and the quality of the opponents also, I think we deserve a draw. It was a fair result. In the second half especially it was difficult.”

The tactician has also admitted that it was difficult for the team to hold the defensive shape after Abud Omar’s injury with the Belgium based defender limping off early in the second half with a suspected groin strain.

Nonetheless, Migne has lauded his players for putting up a fight and getting off with the point under difficult circumstances.

-Good game

“The draw is a correct result for us. Maybe we should have had a penalty and maybe Ethiopia as well should have had a penalty, but I don’t know. The referee had a very good game and I think it was also good for the fans. Now we will try and win in four days’ time,” the Frenchman further stated.

Basing on Sierra Leone’s fate in the group after their FIFA suspension, Stars might qualify for the Cup of Nations on Sunday with three points against the Walia Antelopes at Kasarani.

Migne further added that the team has picked vital lessons from both their games against Ghana and Ethiopia and says he is happy with the improvement they have had.

“We are a young team and maybe apart from Victor (Wanyama) we don’t have many players with big experience. But we are on the way to the high level and I am proud of my players. I told them before the game that the high level is about confirming the result. Not one game you play good and the other bad,” he noted.

-Fill Kasarani

Meanwhile, the tactician has urged Kenyan fans to turn out in large numbers on Sunday at Kasarani and support the team as they bid to make it to the Cup of Nations. Against Ghana, about 18,000 fans turned up at the 60,000 seater Kasarani Stadium.

“If I have one wish, I hope to have a full stadium next Sunday because its amazing to play in this atmosphere. It was amazing to play in this stadium and it will be important if we get the same in four days and I hope to beat you,” Migne said, answering a question from an Ethiopian journalist.

Stars return to Nairobi on Thursday and will hit training immediately to sharpen up for the crucial return leg.

PARIS, France, Oct 10FIFA, the governing body of world football, wants to double the number of women players, saying on Wednesday that it has set out “concrete projects” to achieve that goal.

FIFA is aiming for 60 million women footballers worldwide by 2026, while professionalising clubs and national leagues.

“The three overriding objectives that we have are: increasing participation, enhancing the commercial value and building the foundations,” Sarai Bareman, FIFA’s Chief Woman Football Officer, told AFP.

She said one aim is “developing the coaches, the referees, the administration, the people who are around the women’s game in order that everything we do can be sustainable and have a strong structure.”

She said FIFA wanted change off the field as well, “bringing more women into the decision making body.”

She said that increasing revenue was an important part of the strategy.

“If we are really able to commercialise women’s football, that will help us a lot in terms of overcoming some of this resources that exist within the structure of the women’s game.”

Asked about the budget and staff dedicated to the project, Bareman said: “We are a small team and we are here to provide the expertise and to drive the project,” she said.

“The entire organisation of FIFA is responsible for implementing this strategy”

She went on to praise FIFA general secretary Fatma Samoura and president Gianni Infantino.

“Fatma Samoura, our first ever female general secretary, gave me amazing support.”

“Gianni Infantino, a father of four daughters, is very big on promoting and developing women’s football”

In a video FIFA posted online, Infantino said: “We have to do more, because it’s not enough. We need to turn to the next level, we need to have a strategy to do that”

Government announced free entry for Sunday’s Harambee Stars, Ethiopia clash

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 11 – The Government through the Ministry of Sports has announced free entry for Sunday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifier clash pitting hosts Harambee Stars and visitors Ethiopia at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani.

This follows after Wednesday’s 0-0 draw between the two sides in a match hosted at a full to capacity Bahir Dar Stadium.

In a statement, the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture and Heritage, Rashid Echesa said the move to waive charges will motivate Harambee Stars beat the Walia Ibex of Ethiopia and inch closer to sealing a place to next year’s AFCON as they seek to make continental showpiece return for the first time since 2004.

“Our National Soccer Team Harambee Stars has continued to perform well in the AFCON matches where Kenya has beaten Ghana and drawn with Ethiopia. In this respect, the Government has stepped up support for the team to ensure Kenya qualifies for the AFCON 2019 to be held in Cameroon,” the statement read.

“On Sunday, Kenya will be hosting Ethiopia in a return leg AFCON match at Moi International Sports Center Kasarani. Consequently, it is important that as patriotic Kenyans, it is our duty to support the team unreservedly, Subsequently I wish to announce that entry to the Stadium at Kasarani will be free of charge to allow Kenyans cheer their team to victory.  I wish out Team Harambee Stars all the best as they prepare to take on the Ethiopians,” Echesa announced.

Harambee Stars head coach Sebastian Migne had urged fans to turn out in large numbers on Sunday and support the team as they bid to make it to the Cup of Nations. Against Ghana, about 18,000 fans turned up at the 60,000 seater Kasarani Stadium.
