Sofapaka striker John Avire celebrates his lone goal against Nzoia Sugar in a Kenyan Premier League clash at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machaos on February 7, 2019

MACHAKOS, Kenya, Feb 7 – John Avire’s tap at the near post 12 minutes into the second half was enough to hand Sofapaka a 1-0 victory over a hard fighting Nzoia Sugar at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Thursday afternoon.

The victory, Sofapaka’s fourth in the last five matches took them to 20 points in the standings, five behind leaders Mathare United.

Nzoia had a chance to draw level and probably pick a point off the match but Hansel Ochieng saw his 64th minute penalty come off the crossbar.

While Nzoia missed the golden chance from the spot, Sofapaka should have won the game by a bigger margin had they been better in converting the chances that came their way in the final quarter of the game.

In the 74th minute, Waruru’s glancing header off a Brian Magonya corner came off the upright and the rebound fell on Umaru Kassumba, but the Ugandan’s shot was blocked by a forest of bodies on the Nzoia goalline.

Sofapaka FC forward Stephen Waruru goes down under a challenge from Nzoia Sugar’s Abraham Kipkogei during their Kenyan Premier League clash at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on February 7, 2019.

Almost immediately, Kassumba was accorded with another chance when Magonya’s cross from the right landed on him kindly after the first defender missed his clearance, but the forward skied his effort wide with only keeper Brian Mangala to beat.

The second half had exploded into an attacking spectacle, with the first half having been a tightly contested affair with few chances and far in between.

The best opportunity of the opening half fell on Cliff Kasuti who was sent through by a first time long ball from keeper Justin Ndikumana, but his effort with a volley was awry.

Sofapaka’s other chances came off set pieces with Avire and Justin Mico seeing their efforts go wild.

In the second half though, the game came to life. Sofapaka made changes, Mico and Kasuti paving way for Waruru and Ibrahim Kitawi.

Nzoia, in their usual fast paced style took Sofapaka by their horns and they came close to opening the scoring just two minutes into the half but Ochieng saw his point blank header off a Collins Wakhungu cross go wide.

Sofapaka FC forward John Avire vies for the ball with Nzoia Sugar’s Brian Wepo during their Kenyan Premier League clash at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on February 7, 2019.

They were made to pay 10 minutes later when Waruru won the ball off a half hearted clearance on the left, waded into the box and cut back for Avira who just took a little touch of the ball to score his fourth of the season.

Nzoia were handed a way back five minutes after going down when Magonya was adjudged to have hacked down Wakhungu inside the box, but Ochieng who took the resultant penalty rocked the crossbar to ensure keeper Ndikumana keeps his fourth clean sheet of the campaign.

Having dodged the bullet, Sofapaka tried hunting for a second goal to make it comfortable, but Kassumba missed the golden chances.

Nzoia hunted for the equalizer in the remaining 10 minutes of the game, dumping balls inside the Sofapaka box but the 2009 league champions defended with precision.

KCB defender Bethwel Warambo takes on Posta’s John Mbugi

MACHAKOS, Kenya, Feb 7 – Bottom side Posta Rangers played to a dull 0-0 draw with Kenya Commercial Bank at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, head coach John Kamau failing to lift the mailmen off the bottom of the standings.

Perhaps the only exciting spectacle of the match came in the 90th minute of the tie when John Nairuka’s venomous strike from inside the box came heavily against the crossbar while on the opposite end, a swiftly executed counter attack by the bankers wasn’t successful.

The two sides struggled to have an attacking edge in the early evening kick off, Posta moving to eight points and just two off 15th placed AFC Leopards.

KCB meanwhile retained 12th spot with 12 points.

In other fixtures, leaders Mathare United were held to a 1-1 draw by Sony Sugar in Awendo, same results posted by Tusker FC and Bandari in Ruaraka while Kariobangi Sharks bounced back with a 3-1 thumping of Ulinzi Stars at Kasarani.

In the opening half, there were few half chances. First, Marcelus Ingotsi was sent through on goal with a precise Joseph Mbugi pass from midfield, but defender Mike Kibwage, his former teammate at AFC Leopards raced back superbly to tackle before he pulled the trigger.

Mang’oli had an effort from a freekick on the other end go inches wide from range, Posta keeper Eliud Emase caught flat out.

Michael Mutinda also had a chance with a long-range shot, but it didn’t trouble the keeper.

There wasn’t much to shout about in the second half and apart from the late chances, Jockins Atudo had a header from a Nairuka freekick cleared off the line by Kibwage.

Emery vows to silence Arsenal’s critics

LONDON, United Kingdom, Feb 7Unai Emery insists he won’t be affected by growing criticism of his Arsenal reign as the misfiring Gunners bid to get back on track at Huddersfield on Saturday.

Emery’s side head to Huddersfield confident they can use the Premier League’s bottom club as a cure for travel sickness that has seen them fail to win outside the Emirates Stadium in that competition since November 25.

Arsenal fans were not impressed with an insipid performance in their 3-1 loss at Manchester City last week that suggested Emery has yet to get to grips with problems he inherited from Arsene Wenger at the end of last season.

But the fixture list has been kind to the Spaniard and three points at Huddersfield would keep sixth placed Arsenal in contention for a top four finish.

The trip to Yorkshire is followed by a longer journey to Belarus to take on BATE Borisov next Thursday as the Europa League returns.

But Arsenal’s FA Cup elimination means they can enjoy a free weekend before completing the tie in London, with February then ending with winnable home games in the league against Southampton and Bournemouth.

Top four rivals Chelsea, in contrast, play Manchester City on Sunday and then Tottenham in the league before the end of the month.

Fifth placed Manchester United have the distraction of a Champions League last 16 tie against Paris Saint Germain looming and take on Liverpool in the league later in February.

Arsenal will therefore have only themselves to blame if they finish the month in a weaker position than they began.

Emery, the most successful coach in Europa League history, can legitimately expect to wait until March before deciding whether that competition offers a more realistic opportunity of Champions League qualification than a league placing.

– Play with passion –

But he is adamant the recent criticism of his stewardship had not affected him, even if Arsenal’s away form is a cause for concern.

“My first critic is always myself,” he said. “I work over the criticism of me because I know that work in the present can change our way.

“We have the possibility and the opportunity to get into the top four, but we know it’s not easy. One month ago, we were in the same situation. We are strong at home but we need to do better away.

“We started very well away, changing also our mentality to get more points away, but now we need to recover this confidence and the next opportunity is against Huddersfield.

“We know that defensively we need to do better. We have to continue in our way with passion and also stay calm.”

Emery is hoping January loan signing Denis Suarez can make a bigger impact following a noticeably poor debut against his former club Manchester City

The Barcelona winger, 25, trained on his day off in the hope of getting up to speed by the weekend.

“His adaptation to us and also on Sunday in 25 minutes, in the first days with us, is not with good performance,” Emery said.

“This week he worked Monday alone here with our coaches and he’s working with a different adaptation, better than last week.

“I hope he’s continuing to improve every day. Then he can show in the next matches how he can help us, better than in the first match against Manchester City.”

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 8 – Sarah Chepchirchir, the 2017 Tokyo Marathon champion has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) over the use of an unnamed prohibited substance.

Chepchirchir who is also a former Lisbon Marathon champion has been formally charged under Article 2.2 of the Anti-Doping Rules, her charge cited under the ABP (Athletes Biological passport) case.

Article 2.2 in the World Anti-Doping Agency rules deal with use or attempted use by an Athlete of a prohibited substance or a prohibited method.

It states;

“2.2.1 It is each Athlete’s personal duty to ensure that no Prohibited Substance enters his body and that no Prohibited Method is Used. Accordingly, it is not necessary that intent, Fault, negligence or knowing Use on the Athlete’s part be demonstrated in order to establish an Anti-Doping Rule Violation for Use of a Prohibited Substance or a Prohibited Method.”

“2.2.2 The success or failure of the Use or Attempted Use of a Prohibited Substance or Prohibited Method is not material. It is sufficient that the Prohibited Substance or Prohibited Method was Used or Attempted to be Used for an Anti-Doping Rule Violation to be committed.”

The latest revelation by the AIU continues to put the country hotly on the spotlight over doping with disgraced 2016 Rio Olympics Marathon Champion Jemimah Sumgong just recently slapped with an eight-year ban over the use of blood-boosting drugs.

Chepchirchir notably trained with Sumgong enroute to clinching the 2017 title in Tokyo, her first win in the World Marathon Majors.

Her last race was at last year’s Shanghai International Marathon where she finished 11th.

Another Kenyan top cadre athlete Lucy Kabuu was recently also charged over the use of a banned substance and her case has currently been referred to the Disputes Tribunal after she appealed.

Gor’s Oktay wary of Leopards despite poor run

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 8 – Gor Mahia head coach Hassan Oktay has warned his side that Saturday afternoon’s Mashemeji Derby against arch rivals AFC Leopards will not be an easy affair despite Ingwe’s current limping form.

AFC have won only twice in 12 games this season and have lost four of their last five to languish at 15th spot in the Kenyan Premier League standings. On the contrary, Gor are in fine form having won five of their last six games across all competitions.

“A derby does not respect anyone’s form. This is a different and huge game because for the fans also, it is very important. AFC might be doing badly now, but these are the kinds of games that teams want to win to turn over their results,” Oktay told Capital Sport.

Gor has also not lost against Leopards since 2016 and over the last 22 league meetings, the reigning league champions have won 12 and lost five, drawing a similar number.

K’Ogalo has dominated the last six matches winning five and drawing one. Last season, Gor won the first leg 2-1 and return leg 2-0 and odds are hugely stocked for them to carry the day against their rivals.

But despite all the stats lining up in their favor, Oktay says he will not be fooled to think it will be an easy assignment against a wounded Leopard.

“Our ambition remains the same, to continue winning and I think we are on the right track because we have been improving game by game. We won a big game against Zamalek and I think that really improved our confidence,” the tactician noted.

Gor warmed up for the derby with a 1-0 win over Vihiga United in midweek while AFC lost 2-1 to bottom side Mount Kenya United in Machakos same day.

Oktay believes it will all be down to confidence and mental strength and believes his side is well placed n that.

But, while he prepares for arguably the biggest game for the side in the season, Oktay will have most of his heart thinking about Wednesday’s away trip to Luanda, Angola for their CAF Confederations Cup second group match against Petro Atletico.

Having won against Zamalek last weekend, Oktay believes getting another good result on Wednesday especially away from home will be a good thing for his side’s ambition to make it to the knockout phases for the first time ever.

On this note, Oktay has hinted he will make some changes to his derby squad to preserve some of his key players for Wednesday.

“We cannot pretend that Wednesday is not important for us. If we can get three points away from home, that will be a huge thing for us. Of course we have to look at resting some players and we will need to rotate. But I am happy that we have a good squad and anyone is capable of playing any time,” the coach noted.

Among the players who will likely play a huge role in Saturday’s derby include defender Joash Onyango who was left out of both teams that played Zamalek and Vihiga while star striker Dennis Oliech might be handed a start for his first ever derby.

“We also have a few injuries here and there and we will look at the squad and see who will be fit for us. But we will have a strong team out,” the tactician stated.

Leader Rai to skip Kajiado National Rally leg

Onkar (Skoda Fabia R5) and Tundo (Mitsubishi EvoX R4) won four stages apiece in what went down as the closest of margins in the Rift Valley Motor and Sports Club (RVMSC) organized leg.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 8 – Series leader Onkar Singh Rai will miss out on the next round of the KCB Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) citing pressing commitments.

The three-time reigning Nakuru Rally winner said he already had prior commitments and as such can’t partake the Kenya Motor Sports Club (KMSC) round slated for Kajiado on the first weekend of March.

But the Nakuru based former KNRC Division 2 Champion promised to resume the hunt for the coveted title once he makes a comeback in the third leg in Eldoret.

Onkar beat Carl “Flash” Tundo by a mere 4seconds in a flat-out last stage shootout to seal a hat-trick of Nakuru wins in the season opening event which revolved around Mogotio and Gicheha Farm.

Onkar leads the KNRC log with 25 points ahead of defending champion Tundo who is four points adrift with former multiple champion Chager in third spot on 21points. His elder sibling Tejveer Rai who incidentally was a road sweeper in Nakuru is lying fourth on 15points.

Tejveer is among the drivers affected by the scrapping of the B13 class which permitted crews the use of a bigger restrictor and a sequential gearbox.

Onkar became the first ever driver to rack up a hat-trick of wins in the Nakuru Rally history after he eclipsed Tundo in a last stage shootout at the expansive Gicheha Farm.

Others are Chager and Tundo. With the B13 rule, the Mitsubishi Evolution Xs possessed the requisite ammunition to tackle the Skoda Fabia R5 make which swept the ground with all and sundry in Nakuru.

“The top boys are really fast so it will be quite difficult to chase them,” Tejveer said.

“I’m not looking forward to the 33mm restrictors again and normal h pattern gearbox. The larger 34mm restrictor and sequential boxes had added a little zest last year making the cars a little faster and fun to drive. So to keep up with the R5 category cars I guess we just have to try even harder this year,” said Chager.

Ian Duncan driving a Nissan pickup and navigated by Anthony Nielsen was the biggest casualty in Nakuru.

“Nakuru was going on very well. We were lying 4th roughy 2-3 minutes behind the leader. Considering the size of the car, the route was a little tight for us and sometimes we struggled getting round hairpins. We retired due to a fuel pump issues. We definitely know we can’t beat the top 3-4 drivers. However, we fight to be ahead of the medium class group.”

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 8 – Kenya Harlequins boss Charles Cardovillis will look to frustrate his former employers and break their unbeaten run as the Ngong-road based outfit prepares to host league leaders Kabras Sugar when the Kenya Cup resumes on Saturday.

Cardovillis left Kabras after leading them to the final last year where they lost to KCB and has since re-united with Quins, working with former Kenya Sevens tactician Benjamin Ayimba, guiding the side to third place after eight rounds of matches.

“We’ve started 2019 unbeaten and I am happy with the progress made by the boys. It’s no secret that Kabras players are in very good form, the table speaks for itself. They are the best team in the country at the moment. I hope the boys come out, play and execute the game plan which we feel will inflict the first defeat on Kabras,” Cardovillis said looking ahead to the fixture.

He added; “It’s a game everyone has been waiting for and I expect it to live to the billing. Both sides have some very good players and I hope they all don’t let the pressure get to them so they can play some good rugby as they demonstrate the skills they have.”

Quins come into the tie oozing confidence especially after hitting noisy neighbors Impala RFC 37-24 in the last Kenya Cup matchweek and will be looking to bag maximum points and close in the gap on second placed KCB who are four points ahead of them.

Last weekend, Quins hammered Ngong 80-3 in the Enterprise Cup to further boost their confidence.

From the team that played Ngong, the tactician has made four changes. Loose-head Brian Obwaya hooker Frank Kalwale, tight-head Paul Kioko and lock Hilary Baraza replace Elisha Koronya, Edward Oseko, Melvin Thairu and Roxy Dan Suchi respectively.

Patrice Agunda and Herman Humwa are retained as the day’s blind and open flankers but there is a return for captain Peter Misango at number eight meaning George Scott, who scored a double against Ngong, drops to the bench.

Half-backs Dominic Osino and Eden Agero move from the bench to start as Willy Ambaka starts on the right wing, Iddi Kakai on the left wing, Frank Wanyama at inside centre, David Ambunya at midfield and Lyle Asiligwa at fullback.

Meanwhile, Kabras change only three position for the tie.

Loose-head Hosea Ngesa comes in for Ephraim Oduor who drops to the bench, flanker Dan Sikuta returns in place of Charlton Mokua while Kevin Keegan will start on the blind wing to see Fabian Olando also settle for a place on the bench.

Logan Basson, who has put up an outstanding performance since joining Kabras at the start of the season, is named the usual stand-off while Ugandan superstar Philip Wokorach is at fullback.

Mario Wilson and Nick Baraza are at midfield, Paul Abuto on the open-wing while vice-captain Brian Tanga will be the scrum-half as expected.

Max Adaka skippers the team at hooker, Brian Juma and Hillary Odhiambo are the day’s second rows while George Nyambua and Claude Johannes join Sikuta in the backrow.

Elsewhere, defending champions KCB will be in Madaraka tackling Strathmore University as they look to bridge the five point gap with leaders Kabras.

Head coach Curtis Olago has handed lock Nick Ongeri his first Kenya Cup appearance of the season after 10 months on the sideline.

Ongeri has been out after undergoing a knee surgery for an injury sustained during last season’s Kenya Cup final win over Kabras in March.

He has however featured for the club’s Eric Shirley Shield (ESS) team in the wins over Nakuru RFC, Blak Blad and Mean Machine in 2019 on his way to fitness.

Ongeri replaces Francis Mwita in the starting team and will pair Kenyan international Oliver Mangeni.

Other changes see Brian Nyikuli and Brian Omondi replace Fellix Ojoo and Essau Otieno(bench) as the bankers seek their eighth win of the season in nine matches.

Kenya 7s international Vincent Onyala makes the bench after returning from Sydney 7s but there is no place for speedster and now Kenya 7s captain Jacob Ojee.

Wanga hopes to replicate 2007 breakout year

Kakamega Homeboyz player-coach Allan Wanga before a previous training session at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 8 – Kakamega Homeboyz player-coach Allan Wanga hopes he can replicate his 2007 Kenyan Premier League breakout season by clinching the golden boot once again as he looks on to the sunset years of his career.

Wanga exploded to the scene in 2007 when he signed his first top flight contract with Tusker FC, scoring 23 goals and leading them to the league crown.

This season, already on four goals after four matches hopes he can maintain the same momentum and achieve his set target of vying for the top scorer’s gong.

“I think it is a target that is very achievable because I have started the season well. I feel that I have the energy to push on for the entire season and I will work to the best of my ability to attain the target. Even if not hitting 23 goals, I want to be the top scorer this season,” Wanga, 33, stated.

Wanga has started the year strongly scoring twice against Bandari, and once each against Mathare and Zoo Kericho to see his tally rise to four, just one behind top scorers Enosh Ochieng and Cliff Nyakeya.

On top of his role as Homeboyz’s lead striker Wanga has recently been bestowed with the challenge of being a player-coach after the firing of Fred Nkata, while he also works at the county government as a Sports Officer.

Wanga believes these roles have not added pressure on his shoulders, but rather inspired him to work harder and be an example of his teammates to follow.

“For me, I don’t look at myself as a coach but as a leader. I accepted that role just to see the team stabilize and it has not added pressure on me. It motivates me to work harder because I have to show the younger players the way,” he further stated.

The former Tusker, Sofapaka and AFC Leopards forward is expected to hold on to the role at least to the end of the first leg with assistant from fellow player David Juma and Technical Director Eliud Omukuya.

Kakamega Homeboyz players Moses Mudavadi (left) and Moses Chikati (right) join Allan Wanga in celebrating during their Kenyan Premier League match against Tusker FC in Nairobi on May 26, 2018. PHOTO/Raymond Makhaya

He hopes he can help the team move back the standings and pick positive results after struggling for the better part of the opening weeks of the season.

“We are working as a team and everyone is focused to bring in good results. I believe the players have the will to give their all in the pitch and I am confident we will improve,” Wanga further stated.

The 10th placed Homeboyz will play Kariobangi Sharks in Kakamega on Sunday as they look to keep their resurgence in motion.

AFC Leopards head coach Cassa Mbungo arrives for his first match in charge against Mount Kenya United at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on February 7, 2019. PHOTO/Timothy Olobulu

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 8 – New AFC Leopards tactician Cassa Mbungo has warned Ingwe faithful that he is no messiah and the work ahead to turn the team’s fortunes over is not easy, but has promised to do his best to see the side back on their feet.

Mbungo was announced the club’s third coach this season barely three months in, replacing Serb Marko Vasiljevic who left his role after failing to earn results.

“I am no messiah. I am just a simple coach; a simple man. I will do my best to see the team get back good results and I am sure we will,” The Rwandese who had been linked with the job for the last two years stated.

The tactician has insisted there is a lot of work to be done at the club to see them rise from their current placing at 15th.

“It is possible; everything is possible in football. The only problem is that we have the games coming too close to each other. If I had more time with the team and try show them my philosophy or if I had come in earlier, it would have been better,” Mbungo stated.

“But that’s not possible now and we have to work with what we have. It is possible to get the team back to the top and we have to work hard as a team. I am certain that we can move to a better position,” the tactician stated.

On what he needs to improve in the side, Mbungo says he is concerned with a defense that has been shipping in goals for fun.

“In the game against Bandari, we conceded four. Against Mount Kenya, we have conceded two. It is a problem in defense but then also, we need to improve generally as a team,” he stated.

Mbungo took charge of the team for the first time on Wednesday and was handed a rude welcome with a 2-1 loss to hitherto bottom side Mount Kenya United in Machakos.

Looking back at the tie, the Rwandese was worried with his side’s soft underbelly in defense and their failure to score goals on the other end.

“I trained the team for only a day than went into the game. It was okay but we couldn’t get all the three points. We did mistakes in defense and also we had so many crosses but couldn’t score. We had good situations to score but we failed. We need to improve on that,” Mbungo said.

He looks on to yet another tough assignment when he leads out his side against an on-form Gor Mahia in the Mashemeji Derby on Saturday at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani.

It will be a baptism of fire of sorts with Ingwe on a run of four losses in five games. The tactician comes up against two players he has coached before, Rwandese captain Jacques Tuyisenge and Burundian forward Francis Mustafa.

“I know them because I worked with them and I am excited to be facing them. I expect a very good and exciting game against Gor and I know we can win,” Mbungo, with few words and a little cheeky smile on his face added.

AFC will be looking to beat Gor for the first time in three years.

Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom Girls semis witnessed a massive 13 goals scored at Moi Stadium in Kisumu

KISUMU, Kenya, Feb 9 –Ndhiwa Queens wizard Yvone Ogada scored massive six goals as the Homabay based side ripped apart Migori Education Center 7-0 in the Girls Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom Nyanza semis that witnessed a goal fest at the Moi Stadium Kisumu on Saturday.

In the first semi-final, Cynthia Okwada netted a hat-trick as Manyatta United saw off Kisii United Ladies 6-0 to set up a scintillating mouth-watering final against Ndiwa Queens on Sunday.

Despite playing under unfavourable hot conditions at the burning artificial turf, a total of 13 goals were scored in the girls match that showcased talent that is expected to be tapped by Spanish top tier League La Liga scouts who were present.

Player of the match Yvone Ogada netted six goals to lead the Top Scorers chart

It was the second semi that left many astonished after magnificent Ogada showed what she is made of, tormenting the Migori defence, finding the back of the net six times to lead the top scorers chart ahead of Sunday’s finale.

Surprisingly, Migori had the better share of the first half, creating chances but Ndhiwa shot-stopper Rufa Carolyne pulled fantastic saves to keep her team in the game.

A determined Ndhiwa side utilized their few opportunities that they created with Ogada breaking the deadlock early in the third minute through the striker’s low drive from close range.

The result remained that way to hand Ndhiwa a slim 1-0 lead at the break.

On resumption, Migori went to sleep mode, failing to match Ndhiwa’s pace to see Ogada pick-up where she left, netting a brace in a span of two minutes, to complete her first hat-trick, taking her tally to four goals.

Asha Achieng hit the target for a fifth goal in the 61st minute before Ogada completed her rout, doubling her hat-trick and seal the win.

“It was a great game for me today, I have never scored seven goals in one match, it will be one of my best moments in football. The weather was very hot but we still pulled through, we are now looking forward to the tough final tomorrow,”Ogada stated.

In the opening semi, it was a one sided affair with Manyatta United taking a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break thanks to goals from Cynthia Okwada who opened the scoring eight minutes after kick-off before Evonne Akinyi scoring a brace in a span of 14 minutes.

Okwada continued where she left, scoring her second in the 56th minute before Christine Awuor added the fifth. Okwada rounded off the win with a well taken free-kick that was punched into her own net by Kisii goalkeeper in the 76th minute.

KISUMU, Kenya, Feb 9 – Home team Manyatta United thrashed Kuria based Nyamaharaga 4-0 to set up Nyamira Springs final in the Nyanza Region Boys contest hosted at a packed Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Saturday.

Benson Ochieng netted a hat-trick while Mark Ochieng scored the other in a match that was dominated by the home team.

Backed by their supporters, Manyatta found the opener in the 15th minute courtesy of Mark Ochieng’s well taken long range shot with his goal handing the Kisumu based side a 1-0 lead at the break.

Benson Ochieng then opened his floods of goals in the second half, finding the back of the net in the 55th minute before adding a second 10 minutes later.

He completed his hat-trick 10 minutes to extra-time from the spot after Dennis Ayot was hacked down in the box by Duncan Mwita.

-Nyamira sail through-

In the opening semi-final, Nyamira had to hold their nerves to edge out Kisii based Victory Strikers 6-5 on post-match penalties after the match ended 2-2 in regular time.

Titus Mose opened the scoring seven minutes after kick-off but Vincent Maranga levelled the scores to take the match to a 1-1 draw at the interval.

In the second half, Malachi Otwori reclaimed the lead for Nyamira but once again Victory Strikers responded through Valentine Mose.

Gor Mahia midfielder Kenneth Muguna celebrates his goal against AFC Leopards during the Mashemeji Derby at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani on February 9, 2019

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 9 – Goals in either half from Kenneth Muguna and Francis Kahata saw reigning Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia outclass arch rivals AFC Leopards 2-0 at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani on Saturday afternoon to pick the Mashemeji Derby bragging rights.

Kenneth Muguna put in a blinder of a performance for the reigning champions to help them to a morale boosting victory especially ahead of Wednesday’s CAF Confederations Cup second Group D match in Luanda, Angola against home side Petro Atletico.

AFC continued willowing in their disturbing form as they picked up a fifth loss in six games, condemning them further down the log into the relegation spots.

While it was expected that Gor boss Hassan Oktay would tinker with his squad ahead the Petro Atletico game, the Cypriot went in with his strongest squad save for striker Dennis Oliech who was injured.

AFC’s Cassa Mbungo made a single change from the team that lost to Mount Kenya United in midweek, Christopher Oruchum coming into defense while skipper Robinson Kamura was pushed into the defensive midfield role, Eugene Mukangula dropping to the bench.

Gor Mahia striker Jacques Tuyisenge tries to find a way past AFC Leopards’ Christopher Oruchum and Isaac Kipyegon during the Mashemeji Derby at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani on February 9, 2019

Gor were simply in a class of their own in the opening half and reduced AFC to zero shots on target in the first 45 and a minute of added time. The reigning champions showed they are a class above their arch rivals, dominating the game and passing the ball with so much ease.

Muguna who seems to be getting back into the form that propelled him to the player of the year award in 2017 had the first sniff at goal barely three minutes into the game.

The midfielder broke into the box from the right after a quickly started freekick found AFC sleeping on their bellies, but Eric Ndayishimiye came to the rescue making a save ay his near post with Boniface Omondi missing an effort of heading the rebound home.

Gor continued pressing AFC and Ndayishimiye seemed to have the jitters of his first derby, one of his miss-passes in the area almost costing the side but he redeemed himself to pick up Philemon Otieno’s cross as Whyvonne Isuza screamed to his neck to urge him keep calm.

But, AFC’s soft defense broke on the quarter hour mark when Muguna opened the scoring with a second bite of the cherry in a move he had engineered himself.

Francis Kahata swung in a cross from the left and though Christopher Oruchum and Salim Abdallah managed to block the first effort, Muguna picked up the spills and nudged it in between Ndayishimiye’s legs.

K’Ogalo continued dominating the sizeable crowd roaring to their every one-two tick-tock kind of passing.

Muguna came close to picking number two for himself and the team on the half hour mark but his venomous strike from the edge of the box after his one-two interchange of passes with Batambuze was blocked, came crushing against the crossbar.

AFC were pinned in their own half and seldom broke to create chances.

But in the final eight minutes of the half, they showed glimpses of a side that can score when calm. In the 37th minute, Marcel Kaheza’s freekick was blocked by the wall and Isuza’s attempt to head it home off the rebound was over.

A minute later, Joash Onyango lost the ball in a dangerous position With Tatuwe Wayeka intercepting and passing to Jaffary Owiti wide on the left, but his shot was wide.

In between, Jacques Tuyisenge came close but his connection from the edge of the six yard box off a Boniface Omondi cross on the left went wide.

At the stroke of halftime, Isacc Kipyegon tried to get his side back into the game with a curling freekick off the right,, but the effort sailed inches over the bar.

In the second half, AFC came back a bit recharged and they started off with so much energy as they sought the single ticket that would hand the, a way back into the match.

Gor Mahia defender Philemon Otieno attempts to find a way past AFC Leopards’ Jaffary Owiti during the Mashemeji Derby at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani on February 9, 2019

They nearly did so 12 minutes into the half when Owiti beat keeper Boniface Oluoch to a Kamura freekick and headed it back to the edge of the six yard box, but Isuza somehow failed to hit the target with Batambuze recovering to clear.

They were punished for that glaring miss four minutes later when Shakava’s missed header off a Kahata freekick confused Ndayishimiye, with the ball dropping at the bottom right of his goal.

Immediately, Mbungo threw in a sub, Saad Musa coming off for Mukangula.

Ingwe dodged a bullet when Tuyisenge nodded home at the back post off a Kahata cross, but the second assistant’s referee was up for offside.

AFC tried to get into the game and had two chances, first, Vincent Oburu who had just come on stealing the ball off Joash Onyango before feeding Mukangula, but the latter’s shot whistled just inches off target.

Boniface Oluoch was called into his first save of the afternoon minutes later when he punched away a shot from Owiti off another industrious supply from Oburu.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 9 – Kabras Sugar retained their unbeaten run in the Kenya Cup after hitting Kenya Harlequins 21-3 at their RFUEA Backyard on Saturday evening.

Pre-match, Quins coach Charles Cardovillis wholed Kabras to the final last season had vowed to break the Westerners winning streak, but Kabras came in with a strong attitude and left Ngong Road with maximum points.

Kabras ran in three converted tries, two of them dotted down by Ugandan fullback Philip Wokarach, against Kenya Harlequin’s penalty. It was however the first time this season that Kabras have failed to win with a bonus.

The win, ninth of the season, takes Kabras to 44 points but the gap between and KCB has now been reduced by four points.

The bankers picked up a 32-8 win over Strathmore Leos in Madaraka to move to within breathing distance of the leaders.

The visitors produced a sublime first half as Wokorach, winger Kevin Keegan and fly-half Logan Basson combined well to lead 14-3.

Lyle Asiligwa had taken Quins 3-0 up but Wokorach opened the scoring for Kabras courtesy of clever hands inside Quins’ 22 after which he converted to make it 3-7.

Another beautiful play saw George Nyambua bag Kabras Sugar’s second that was converted by Wokorach to lead 14-3. Quins had a bright start to the second half but a number of knock-ons and forward passes saw Kabras punish them.

Ambaka had a chance to set Frank Wanyama but his pass forward. Kabras quickly took the penalty with Kevin Keegan managing to assist Wokorach to score his second and convert.

Meanwhile, Kenya 7s international Collins Injera scored a hat-trick as Mwamba RFC beat Blak Blad 26-13 in the early kick off at the RFUEA.

Mwamba also bagged a bonus as they ran in four tries with three of them being converted by Tony Omondi and Elvis Namusasi. The win saw them leapfrog Nondies to fourth place with 27 points.

It was Mwamba’s fifth win of the season as Blad suffered their seventh defeat of the campaign.

Blad trailed 12-03 at the interval courtesy of Allan Ominde’s penalty in the 40th minute and looked like they would stage a comeback by scoring back to back tries from Byron Ogada and Leroy Mbugua but Injera’s try with two minutes to go handed Mwamba the all-important win.

Dhiwa Queens from Homa Bay County thrashed home team Manyatta United 3-0 to be crowned the Nyanza Region Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom Girls Champions

KISUMU, Kenya, Feb 10 – Deadly forward Yvone Ogada continued to impress after hitting the target and providing an assist to inspire Ndhiwa Queens from Homa Bay humble home team Manyatta United 3-0 in the Nyanza Region Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom Girls final staged at the Moi Stadium Kisumu on Sunday.

Ogada, who finished the two-day tournament as the top scorer with seven goals, sent Ndhiwa Queens ahead when winger Emelda Akoth raced from the left flank to cross the ball that found Ogada in the penalty box and easily tap home from  cross range breaking Manyatta keeper Athmar Dodosi’s clean sheet.

Ndhiwa managed to hold on the lead, heading to the interval with an advantaged 1-0 lead and put one foot in the National Finals.

Manyatta hopes of coming back in the game were dimmed after Ndhiwa doubled the lead in the 51st minute when keeper Dodosi gifted the Homa Bay side an easy goal.

This is after Susan Ogidi picked the ball from her custodian Carolyne Rufa to cross the ball that was intended to find Ogada but the Manyatta shot-stopper came off the line to intersect it only to lose the grip of the ball at the end seeing helplessly the ball slowly roll at the back of the net.

Manyatta United fan disappointed after seeing his team concede a third goal against Ndhiwa Queens

Chasing for two goals, Manyatta surged forward but Rufa stood tall in between Ndhiwa’s sticks to thwart their dreams of ruling the Nyanza title.

A composed Ndhiwa side sealed the win with a brilliant goal courtesy of Asher Achieng’s low strike.

This is after Ogada broke off for counter attack to find Achieng who intern returned the pass to Ogada and with the striker having an opportunity to score her brace, she did not go for glory but instead sent the ball back to Achieng who calmly smashed the ball home to see her net two goals in the tournament.

The La Liga scouts who were present will have a headache in selecting the players from Nyanza Girls tournament who will make up an All-Star team that will head to Spain’s top league La Liga for a 10-day training.

With the win, Ndhiwa Queens will represent Nyanza in Natinal Finals slated for Muru County at Kinoru Stadium in June and also received Sh200,000 prize money.

Manyatta Boys are the Nyanza Region Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom Boys Champion.

KISUMU, Kenya, Feb 10 – After seeing their girls counterparts eliminated, hosts Manyatta stepped up their game to crash Nyamira Springs 5-0 to be crowned the Nyanza Boys Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom champions in a final played at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Sunday.

Clinton Bulimo and talisman Benson Ochieng grabbed a brace each while Denis Oyot netted the other goal to see Manyatta book a ticket to the National Finals slated for June in Meru County on top of bagging Sh200,000 prize money for the winners.

Playing in the presence of their fans who turned up in large numbers, Manyatta did not disappoint, settling in the game quickly and could have found the opener six minutes after kick-off but Nyamira had their keeper Jephter Bundi to thank for after he punching away a ferocious shot from danger man Benson Ochieng.

Manyatta’s effort did not take long before bearing fruits after Ochieng broke through the left wing to cross the ball that was punched away by Nyamira custodian but a feeble bicycle kick from defender Charles Ongori found Oyot unmarked to control the ball before smashing the ball home at the far right corner.

The goal sparked Manyatta fans, a move that motivated their team and they could have found the second when Bulimo was hacked at the edge of the box, but Oyot blazed the set-piece over.

In the 24th minute Manyatta doubled the scores from Benson Ochieng who raced from the right flank to squeeze the ball at the far post.

Manyatta were awarded a penalty in 32nd minute when star attacker Benson Ochieng was brought down by Nyamira Springs defender Frank Kibona in the box.

However, Benson Ochieng squandered the glorious chance after blasting over the bar to see the scores remain so as the teams headed to half time.

On resumption, it was Manyatta’s way with Bulimo adding a third goal in the 50th minute before completing his brace in the 74th minute.

Benson Ochieng then rounded off in style with a good display after an interchange of passes to hit home in the 88th minute and claim a brace.

Michael Saruni wins the 800m at the Millrose Games

NEW YORK, United States, Feb 10 – Kenya’s Michael Saruni ran the second-fastest indoor 800 meters in history, winning in 1:43.98 at the Milrose Games on Saturday.

Saruni’s effort was second only to the indoor world-record time of 1:42.67 set by Denmark’s Kenyan-born Wilson Kipketer in Paris at the 1997 World Indoor Championships.

“Oh man, it’s crazy,” Saruni said. “I trained hard for this moment. I just had to do it.”

Donavan Brazier was second in an American record 1:44.41 with American Sam Ellison third in a personal best 1:46.13.

“I’m excited about that, but Saruni snuck up on me,” Brazier said. “I had the other record but he passed me.”

Brazier erased one of the oldest US indoor marks, lowering the former record of 1:45.00 set by Johnny Gray on March 8, 1992 at Sindelfingen, Germany.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha, twice a world indoor 3,000m champion, missed the world indoor mile record by one-hundredth of a second in a dominating victory.

The 21-year-old distance star captured the feature event in the 112th edition of the US indoor classic in 3mins 48.46secs, with Kenya’s Edward Cheserek a distant second in 3:53.29.

But Kejelcha fell agonizingly short of his target, the mile indoor world record of 3:48.45 set by Morocco’s Hicham El Guerrouj on February 12, 1997 at the Flanders indoor meet in Ghent, Belgium.

Kejelcha was not the only African runner to settle for the second-fastest time in history at the meet.

A hush fell over the meet when Jamaican Kemoy Campbell, serving as a pace-setter to move the men’s 3,000 field along quickly, collapsed and fell into the infield just after the second turn just beyond the 1,000m mark.

Campbell, 28, was carried out of the facility on a stretcher as other events were halted while he received medical attention.

The Jamaica Gleaner reported Campbell was in stable condition while Sports Illustrated reported Campbell was breathing with assistance and will remain hospitalized overnight in an intensive care unit.

American Grant Fisher won the men’s 3,000 in 7:42.62 with Australian Morgan McDonald .14 of a second back and Kenya’s Amon Kemboi third in 7:44.77 — all with personal bests.

In the shot put, where final heaves were delayed while Campbell was treated, reigning Olympic champion Ryan Crouser won with a personal best and 2019 world best 22.33m while US compatriot Joe Kovacs, the Rio Olympic runner-up and 2015 world champion, was second on 20.63.

Konstanze Klosterhalfen won the women’s mile in a German record and season world best 4:19.98 with American Colleen Quigley second in 4:22.86.

“It’s very amazing. Everything is so exciting,” Klosterhalfen said. “I’m just very happy to be here and run this time. It was really fun.”

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 10 – Kenyan champions Gor Mahia will be without striker Jacques Tuyisenge and right back Philemon Otieno when they travel to Luanda, Angola for their second CAF Confederations Cup Group D match against Petro Atletico on Wednesday.

The two are suspended for the Petro Atletico tie after accumulating two yellow cards. Tuyisenge scored twice and assisted one as Gor whipped Zamalek 4-2 in the first match day against Zamalek and will be a great miss for the Luanda assignment.

“It is sad I won’t be available but I wish the team all the best. I know we have a good squad which can get a result and I have maximum faith in them. They will fight to win,” Tuyisenge told Capital Sport.

Dennis Oliech and Wellington Ochieng are expected to fill in for the two in the starting team though both missed the 2-0 Mashemeji Derby win over AFC Leopards on Sunday due to illness and injury.

Though head coach Hassan Oktay insinuated that Wellington might not be ready for the tie, he has been listed in the travelling party. Oliech was left out of the squad due to illness.

Gor Mahia defender Philemon Otieno attempts to find a way past AFC Leopards’ Jaffary Owiti during the Mashemeji Derby at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani on February 9, 2019

“I always rotate my players and I know any player can be fielded and they do something good. They now know my philosophy and react well to it on the pitch,” the tactician stated.

Meanwhile, Oktay believes the result against AFC Leopards on Saturday will be a huge motivation for his players ahead of the tie in Angola saying they hope to build on the results they have managed to pick over the last few games.

“This has given us some massive confidence because it will be a huge game for us. I watched their first game (against NA Hussein Dey) and they are fast, mobile and are good on set pieces. It will be a very tough game but I am ready for them and I am not worried,” the tactician stated.

Gor lead the standings with three points after their opening day 4-2 win over Egyptian giants Zamalek and maximum points away to Petro Atletico will all but surely put the Kenyan giants in a comfortable position to make it into the quarters for the first time ever.

Gor Mahia head coach Hassan Oktay cools himself down on the touchline during the Mashemeji Derby against arch rivals AFC Leopards at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani on February 9, 2019.

Looking back at the derby meanwhile, Oktay was pleased with the result but the high-demanding coach believes they should have won by a bigger margin.

“We played very well today. The players are beginning to get my philosophy and we are building on the rhythm very well. I am disappointed because I think we should have won by a bigger margin. I was expecting more than two,” the tactician stated.

The victory saw K’Ogalo move to second in the standings with 22 points, just three shy of early pace setters Mathare United.

Gor leave the country for Angola on Tuesday morning.

AFC will rise from derby blues, says Mbungo

AFC Leopards head coach Cassa Mnungo watches on during the Mashemeji Derby against rivals Gor Mahia at the Kasarani Stadium on February 9, 2019

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 10 – AFC Leopards tactician Cassa Mbungo is upbeat the club will recover from the current slump, their derby day 2-0 loss to arch rivals Gor Mahia at the Kasarani Stadium on Saturday afternoon seeing them slump only one point away from the relegation zone.

AFC have lost five of their last six games and the Rwandese tactician only brought on board last week after the departure of Serb Marko Vasiljevic is confident he can turn around fortunes at the den.

“We will do well, I have faith. We will work on our weak areas and especially now that we are almost going for the international break, I will have more time to work with the team and rectify the mistakes we made,” Mbungo said after his side’s loss to Gor on Saturday.

He added; “Tactically we did some things right and we were okay, but we still have work to do. We conceded goals from set pieces and our defending was a bit naïve from them. But we will work in training and I will show them what to do in certain instances.”

AFC have a tough run of fixtures awaiting them as Mbungo tries to lift the limping giants off the doldrums of relegation.

They play Ulinzi Stars next weekend before facing Mathare United and Sony Sugar prior to the international break.

AFC Leopards players hurdle together before the Mashemeji Derby against rivals Gor Mahia at the Kasarani Stadium on February 9, 2019

With the transfer window also set to open, Mbungo has hinted that he might work on a few transfers though he says he believes in the squad currently at his disposal.

“We need to strengthen the team and if I have an opportunity to do so then I will bring in some players. But first, we have to work with those we have because I think they are good enough and if we can work to improve them, we will have a good team,” he stated.

He picked out the defense as a key area he needs to work on saying he is appalled by the number of goals his side is conceding.

“In four games we have conceded nine goals and that is an area that we have to really work on. Also, we are not creating chances to score on the other end and this is also a concern. There’s a lot we need to work on,” the tactician stated.

Eric Kiptanui cuts the tape to win a previous road race

BARCELONA, Spain, Feb 10 – Kenya’s Eric Kiptanui beat Ethiopia’s Abebe Dagefa in a sprint finish over the final kilometer to clinch the eDreams Mitja Marato Barcelona Half Marathon title on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s best finisher in the women’s race was Sally Chepyego who came in third behind the Ethiopian duo of 21-year old Roza Dereje and Dibabe Kuma.

The men’s race didn’t feature pacemakers so the usual fight against the clock and hunt for a quick time never materialised.

The pedestrian pace led the leaders through the opening five kilometres in 15:03.

It was then that Sweden’s debutant Napoleon Solomon, an 8:23.54 3000m steeplechase specialist, took charge of the race, upping the pace to reach 10 kilometres in 29:26, accompanied by the Kenyan triumvirate of Kiptanui, Jonathan Korir and Meshack Koech.

The Ethiopian pair of Degefa and Betesfa Getahun and Ugandan Moses Kurong followed suite. The latter dropped back from the main group shortly afterwards, eliminating his chance of reaching the podium again after finishing third last year.

The remaining sextet went through 15 kilometres in 43:52 after another 14:26 five kilometres split, with Solomon doing most of pacing.

Shortly before the 20-kilometres (58:16) point Degefa and Getahun, upping the tempo, moved to the front. From then on they increased their speed but Kiptanui remained on their shoulders.

The 28-year-old Kenyan has clocked 3:37 over 1500m at the high altitude of Nairobi, and used that speed to overtake the Ethiopians in the closing metres to romp home in 1:01:44, after covering the final kilometre in 2:30.

Degefa was runner-up one second back with Getahun rounding out the podium another two seconds in arrears.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 11 – “I feel more at home here. This is home not any other place. I am happy working here. I was miserable before,” Mount Kenya head coach Melis Medo said of his triumphant return to the club after a short stint with Sofapaka.

The tactician had a tough two-month stint with the 2009 league champions but made a return to his former side and has enjoyed some quick success with wins over Mathare United and AFC leopards reviving some hopes of evading the relegation chop.

Mount Kenya had a torrid start to the season but back to back wins over two giants have resuscitated them and as they prepare to face Kenya Commercial Bank on Monday afternoon in Machakos, the tactician is hopeful of brighter days ahead.

Medo is optimistic the team will continue with its new found form against the bankers in a game he knows will be tough.

“We need to continue working hard and take game by game. I am confident that we can get out of the bottom of the table and move up,” the tactician stated.

Medo first joined Mount Kenya mid last season and helped them survive relegation in a financially-tough circumstance and he is confident if things are better this season, then they will not be a drop-fighting side.

They come up against a KCB side also struggling to find their balance in the top flight after a shaky start. The side has not lost over their last seven games, but the worry is that they have picked only two wins and drawn the rest of the games.

They are placed 12th in the standings with 12 points and victory against Mount Kenya might take them into the top 10.

“We have built confidence over the last few games and I think we are improving well as a team. We are looking forward to the Mount Kenya game though I know it will be hard but we want to fight for maximum points,” the tactician stated.

This will be the first ever meeting between the two sides.

Meanwhile, the Awendo Green Stadium will host a tasty sugar-belt derby with Sony Sugar taking on Chemelil.

Chemelil are willowing in the relegation zone having won only twice in 11 outings this season and have lost two of their last four games. Sony have also not been steady over their last four, despite being placed ninth in the standings with 15 points.

Sofapaka striker John Avire celebrates his lone goal against Nzoia Sugar in a Kenyan Premier League clash at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machaos on February 7, 2019

However, the clash of the early week fixtures will be on Tuesday when top of the table Mathare United clashes with resurgent Sofapaka at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani.

While league leaders Mathare have began to stutter after a strong start to the season, Sofapaka have recovered from their own tragedy and have won four of their last five games to push to within five points of the league leaders.

Sofapaka tactician John Baraza has labelled that tie as a very important fixture in their quest to challenge for this year’s league title and says it will be imperative for them to pick maximum points to stay in the race.

“When you play against the leaders, it is always good to get points against them to bridge that gap. Our target remains to win the league and if we can win on Tuesday then that’s a very positive step for us,” the tactician stated.

Batoto ba Mungu will welcome back midfielders Dennis Odhiambo and Elly Asieche who missed last week’s win over Nzoia Sugar with injury and sickness respectively.

Mathare United head coach Francis Kimanzi shares sentiments with his assistant Salim Ali during their Kenyan premier League match against Tusker FC at the Ruaraka Complex on January 12, 2018. PHOTO/Timothy Olobulu

Mathare saw their unbeaten run broken by Mount Kenya United before coming from behind to draw 1-1 with Sony Sugar last week and head coach Francis Kimanzi will be looking for a response when they tackle Sofapaka.

On paper, Sofapaka carry a massive advantage over Mathare as they have won half of the last 20 fixtures between the two sides, losing four times and drawing the remaining six.

Last season, the two sides shared spoils with Mathare winning the first leg 3-1 and Sofapaka winning the return fixture 3-2.

In other fixtures set for Tuesday, bottom side Posta Rangers will take on Nzoia Sugar, Kakamega Homeboyz take on Kariobangi Sharks in Kakamega while Bandari will be at home against Vihiga United.

Bottom side Posta have won only twice in their last 12 games and lost three of their last five, stats that have left head coach John kamau scratching his head.,

However, the tactician is completely sure his charges will not be fighting relegation this season and believes they will turn the tide.

“It’s not a good thing (being bottom) but by the end of the season we wont struggle like the team did last year where it was almost going to play offs. I am sure we will finish a better team. We just have to work on our finishing because we create scoring chances, but it is just a case of players being calm infront of goal,” the tactician stated.
