NAIROBI, Kenya May 29 – Betting companies in the country and gamblers are set to be dealt a major blow if new legislative proposals by Members of Parliament to repeal the current regulations that were enacted in 1966 will be passed.

The proposed Gaming Bill 2019 drafted by the National Assembly Sports, Culture and Tourism Committee according to the Chair Victor Munyaka are meant to seal the numerous loopholes in the multi-billion shillings industry.

Munyaka says the 170 clauses documented in the proposals will key among other things address the menace associated with the addictive risk venture that has lured hundreds of youths who strive to make a quick kill by risking their hard-earned money or savings.

He regretted that gambling had become a serious threat to hard work with many young Kenyans opting to indulge in the exercise.

“These proposals will seal most of the gaps in the existing law and will deal with and cure many of the concerns raised by Kenyans about an unregulated, uncontrolled and carelessly operated industry with many far-reaching negative effects to millions of citizens,” he said.

Munyaka says the 170 clauses documented in the proposals will key among other things address the menace associated with the addictive gambling that has lured hundreds of youths who strive to make a quick kill.

The Machakos Town legislator, who spoke to journalists at Parliament buildings on Wednesday maintained that the committee was concerned about protecting the youth from gambling, noting that many had since been enslaved in the exercise who in turn, in the event of losing their bets, end up committing suicide.

He stressed the current regulations which target majority of the youths have no existing legal framework and argued that by extension they largely operate outside the law.

“The proposed repeal in informed by the fact that the existing legislation is archaic in nature and fails to address the modern-day challenges facing the betting and gaming industry especially during this era of internet connectivity,” he said.

He added that the proposals have been drafted with the consideration of ensuring that they align themselves with the provisions of the new constitution.

He lamented that the existing loopholes had been exploited by the betting firms in the country whom he accused of being insincere when reporting their revenues.

The third term lawmaker disclosed that the committee’s independent audit on betting firms in the country had established that they amass revenue amounting to Sh200 billion contrary to what he said they were reporting, figures he said were much less.

Football Kenya Federation boss Nick Mwendwa and Betin Marketing Director Carlo Buttaci exchange documens after signing a Sh20mn sponsorship deal for the Harambee Stars on Macrh 12, 2019

“These proposals will develop mechanisms for transparency in the gaming industry through a real time monitoring system that will attract full tax disclosures and gaming patterns by the government,” he said.

Part of the clause in the proposals stipulates that new entrants in the online gambling industry will at least have to part with Sh100 million and Sh30 million which Kioko said should be paid annually to the government.

The committee has further proposed to increase the amount used by gamblers to bet from the current Sh10 to a higher amount which he failed to disclose.

This, he, said would go a long way in limiting the level of gambling in the country.

The Bill is set to be tabled before the House next week when MPs resume sittings from their short recess, even as Kioko exuded confidence that it will receive the much-needed support from his colleagues.

Already, the government through Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi gave betting firms in the country an ultimatum to be tax complaint before July 1 or risk losing their licenses.

Allan Wanga scoops 2018/19 KPL Golden Boot

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 29 – Kakamega Homeboyz striker Allan Wanga has won the 2018/19 Kenyan Premier League Golden Boot with 18 goals despite not scoring in their final season match against Sofapaka on Wednesday.

Wanga’s Homeboyz suffered a 2-0 defeat against Sofapaka where Umaru Kasumba who was the other Golden Boot contender, having 17 goals failed to score as Stephen Waruru netted a brace.

In the relegation battle, Chemelil and Zoo FC survived while Posta Rangers dropped to the promotion playoff where they are set to face the third team in the National Super League.

Posta will have to go through a relagation/promotion playoff two-legged clash if they are to maintain their status for another season in the Kenyan Premier League after they squandered their chance of avoiding the situation.

This comes after Posta lost 2-0 to Tusker FC in their final match.

Rangers came into the round on 32 points, a point above the relegation playoff slot and only needed to replicate or better the results of Zoo FC (32) and Chemelil Sugar (31), the two teams beneath them, to maintain their place in the topflight.

But they were unable to do so as they fell 2-1 to Tusker at the Ruaraka grounds with Chemelil winning against Sony Sugar and Zoo sealing a point against KCB.

With the league title and automatic relegation slots already wrapped up, the other race that needed to be decided on the final day was the golden boot race with three candidates locked neck and neck.

Inspired by Mariga, Wanyama seeks UCL glory

Harambee Stars and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama celebrates a goal during a past English Premier League match.

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 31 – An old African saying goes, lightning does not strike twice at the same place; but for the expansive Noah Wanyama family, this might just be any other saying because in their narrative, the centuries-old adage is just but a complete opposite.

On May 22, 2010, Victor Wanyama took a front row seat at the Santiago Bernabeu, 13-time European champions Real Madrid’s football cathedral, and watched in glee as his elder brother Macdonald Mariga became the first ever East African to wear a Champions League winner’s medal around his neck.

Mariga’s Inter Milan side coached by Jose Mourinho beat Bayern Munich 2-0 courtesy of a brace by the baby-faced Argentine assassin Diego Millito.

Then, he was just your ordinary 22 year old turning out for Belgian side Germinal Berschot looking to start up his career and follow in the footsteps of his elder brother.

Nine years, 10 days later, as if fate was looking from high up above, Wanyama will be lining up 13.3km from where his brother won the UCL in 2010, playing in his own European final for the Lily Whites that are Tottenham Hotspur when they face Liverpool at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid, in a UEFA Champions League final.

“I remember that game very well and while watching, I told myself that one day, I would also want to play and win a Champions League final. I didn’t know how or when but I knew deep down within me, that I had that dream,” Wanyama told Capital Sport.

Harambee Stars and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama with his elder brother MacDonald Mariga when they visited Deputy President William Ruto at his office in 2018

The Kenyan captain has revealed that his elder brother has been an inspiration to him and has been a shoulder to lean on during the tough injury spell.

“He has been there for me throughout this period and especially now that we are in the Champions League final. He has been telling me how it feels to be there and he really wants me to win and get a second medal in the family,” Wanyama, who will have members of his family, including Mariga at the Wanda Metropolitano for the final said.

“He has such strong character and that is one thing I have picked from him. I hope to make him, my team and my country proud,” Wanyama further noted.

Most will argue that he might have probably done better than his trail-blazing brother. While he was often used as a second half substitute by Mourinho, Wanyama has been the contrast, like a pillar to Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs since returning from injury.

Harambee Stars and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama celebrates after his side’s victory against Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League quarter finals

Against Manchester City in the quarter finals, Wanyama worked like a fired up workhorse, doubling up his shift when midfield partner Moussa Sissoko limped out injured and Spurs’ squad thinned by injuries.

He also started in the momentous semi-final victory over Ajax and only came off at halftime after picking up a hip injury. He reflects back in the season and believes, getting to the UCL final has wiped off the tears of enduring an injury ravaged season that saw him miss a huge chunk of Spurs games.

“It has been a very tough season for me to be honest. Coming in and out of injury has slowed down my progress this season, but I choose to be positive and look at the bright side of it. I have come back strong and I am playing and that is the best thing for me. Also, playing in a European final is every player’s dream. It has been my dream always,” the midfielder said.

With Harry Winks and Eric Dier back from injury and Sissoko picking up fitness, Pochettino has plenty of options in the middle of the pack, but one thing is for certain, Wanyama will play a role in the tie.

“We have a very good coach who inspires us and as a team, I think we have such a strong team full of character,” said the midfielder.

Coming up against Liverpool who are playing their second European final will be a massive task for the North Londoners. But having scored against The Reds at their own backyard infront of the Kop, Wanyama has belief wrapped around his shoulders.

Origi, Wanyama put Kenya on UCL map

Kenyans On Twitter appreciate their own Wanyama, ‘Origi’ ahead of UCL final

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 30 – Liverpool striker Divock Origi and Tottenham Hotspur’s Victor Wanyama are the talk of Kenya ahead of Saturday’s European Champions League final in Madrid.

In football-mad Kenya, a nation of 50 million in East Africa, there is hope the two players can shine a positive spotlight on it as fans relish the prospect of a key Kenyan role, even if Origi is Belgian born.

While Kenyan fans already have the feast of the Africa Cup of Nations to look forwards to in June, the Champions League final is dividing opinion on the training ground at Nairobi club Ligi Ndogo.

“This is the first time two players of Kenyan origin will take part in a Champion’s League final,” says 28-year-old youth coach Kenneth Amolo.

“Wanyama and Origi will represent Kenya on the world stage, it’s great.”

Another youth coach taking a break from action, Lawrence Omondi, tells AFP he’ll be supporting Spurs.

“Wanyama is the captain of our national side, and he is our best player, so we have to back him.”

“We have to back the captain of the national side, right,” he insisted of Wanyama, who won his first Kenya full international cap at 15.

Wanyama is a solid central midfielder but is also the first Kenyan to score in the European Champions League back when he starred for Celtic, netting in an unforgettable win over Barcelona.

The stocky Wanyama has only started 13 Premier League games this season but has turned out six times so far in the Champions League and is highly thought of by the Spurs faithful.

Origi, for his part, has already made a huge Champions League impact at Anfield, scoring two goals in Liverpool’s sensational comeback against Barcelona in this year’s semi-final.

And while Origi, who transferred from French club Lille to Liverpool in 2014, plays for Belgium, he also enjoys huge support in Kenya as the son of a former Kenya football captain, Mike Okoth.

His dad is famous for making the unusual transition from ‘keeper to striker.

“He was born and bred in Belgium, but he still has a link with Kenya,” says Austin Oduor, Origi’s uncle and himself a former Kenya international.

“He comes here regularly and he speaks good Swahili,” he added of the language that along with English is Kenya’s official tongue.

The pair also represent different ethnic groups in a highly diverse nation.

“Origi is from a Luo family, and Wanyama from a Luhya family,” says sports journalist Elias Makori.

These two ethnic groups are historically associated with football in Kenya, with the Luo and Luhya supporting rival clubs, Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards respectively.

The Champions League final has even been renamed the “Mashemeji derby” by Kenyans in reference to the derby between those two clubs.

“Previously people have been saying the Champions League is a tournament for foreign players, but now it is coming closer to home,” said Makori.

Shujaa come short against Australia in Paris

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 1 – Johnstone Olindi’s decision to kick a last minute penalty instead of trying to play out haunted Kenya as they played to a 19-19 draw against Australia in their opening game of the final stop of the World Sevens Series in Paris on Saturday afternoon.

Shujaa had seen their 19-14 lead tied by the Australians who were awarded a TMO try in the final minute of the game and were fortunate that the extras went wide.

In the re-start, Shujaa won possession and played, seeking to get just that one try to give them maximum points. With the clock already out, Kenya won a penalty just over the halfway line and Olindi elected to try and get in the threes a decision that didn’t produce desired results.

The relegation bound Kenyans would have picked a morale boosting win against the Australians who reached the London Sevens final last weekend, but the point puts them a step up in their quest to qualify for the Cup quarters and more or less assure themselves of surviving relegation.

With a minute left on the clock, Australia themselves turned the game on its head when Mathew Hood was awarded a try after a TMO decision.

With Kenya leading 19-14, Hood pierced through the Kenyan defense and went for the try line with Nelson Oyoo hot on his heels. The Kenyan speedstar managed to drag him back but Hood regained his footing to cross over, though the try needed affirmation from above.

Australia missed the twos to give Kenya some hope with barely seconds on the clock.

Australia broke the deadlock early on through Josh Coward who dotted down after the Australians turned over play and the conversion was good for a 7-0 lead.

Kenya however closed in with Charles Omondi dotting down on the left after skipper Jacob Ojee had drawn two chasers to his side before offloading for Omondi who ran through space to dot down.

Amonde then capitalized on a mistake at the back by Australia to take Kenya into the lead when he picked the ball a few metres from the try line to cross over the chalk and Olindi kicked home the twos for a 12-7 lead.

However, Australia went to the break 14-12 up Lachlan Anderson dotting down after running to a kicked pass from Maurice Longbottom.

After the break though, the never say die Kenyans kept the fight when Bush Mwale raced down under the posts after some good footwork earned him space between three Australian back-men with Olindi kicking through the posts the conversion.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 1 – The final of the Football Kenya Federation Shield pitting defending champions Kariobangi Sharks and Bandari was rained off on Saturday evening with the dockers leading 2-1 at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani.

The match will now be played on Sunday at 11am for the final 45 minutes with the holders hoping to overturn the single goal deficit.

Yema Mwana’s double had given Bandari a 2-0 lead before Patillah Omotto’s belter of a goal gave Sharks some hope.

The heavens opened up with around 15 minutes left to half time and the pitch was soaked over the entire halftime period prompting the match officials to make a decision after a prolonged break.

After close to half an hour inside the dressing room, centre referee Davies Omweno came out with his two assistants and captains of both sides and after making a survey of the entire pitch decided to call off the tie.

“It was rather unfortunate, but beyond our control. We hope to finish the job tomorrow,” Bandari head coach Bernard Mwalala said after the tie was called off.

But the tactician will have a headache to convince Harambee Stars head coach Sebastien Migne to allow keeper Faruk Shilhalo play the game tomorrow as he was scheduled to leaver for France later on Saturday night.

Shikalo who might be playing his last game for Bandari before leaving for Tanzanian giants Yanga SC upon return from the Cup of Nations was in great form keeping his side in the game.

The dockers broke the deadlock in the second minute when Mwana raced to a ball planted behind the defense before slamming a powerful shot past Gad Mathews.

Sharks had a chance to draw level in the fifth minute but Shikalo made a brilliant save to tip Duke Abuya’s powerful low shot behind for a corner. Six minutes later they came close when Eric Kapaito beat Brian Otieno to the ball to face Shikalo one on one but lifted the ball just wide.

For the missed chances, Sharks were made to pay when Abdallah Hassan put Mwema through with a brilliant through pass and the forward did the rest, his powerful shot going past Dad in the Sharks goal.

The holders however gave themselves some hope when Omotto struck a belter from outside the box after the Bandari backline cleared the ball to his path.

Sharks had a chance when Harrison Mwenda broke on the left but his low shot was well saved by Shikalo.

Kenya into Paris Cup Quarters, on track to survival

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 1 – Kenya displayed a never say never attitude as they advanced to their first Cup Quarter-final this season after winning one, drawing one and losing one to finish second in Pool B in the final leg at Paris 7s on Saturday.

The result means that Kenya are assured of at least 10 points, therefore inching closer to avoiding relegation.

This is after Shujaa showed a brave performance to beat Wales 26-21 in their final Pool match to leave them depend on fellow Africans South Africa do them a favour by beating Australia, which they did in a 19-17 scoreline.

The Paul Murunga coached side had opened their campaign with a 19-19 draw with Australia before losing 12-29 to South Africa.

Against Wales, Kenya were trailing 14-7 at the break after Goodchild got Wales off the mark against following a well worked move by his team-mates, as Davies added the extra two.

He then followed that up with his fifth try of the weekend before Kenya turned tables when Jeff Oluoch pulled one try back.

The second half was much better for Shujaa as Bush Mwale deceived the Welsh with a dummy and break through the line to bring his team back on level terms before Nelson Oyoo wrapped up with the third try.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 2 – Substitute Benjamin Mosha scored with six minutes left on the clock as Bandari beat defending champions Kariobangi Sharks 3-1 to clinch their second Football Kenya Federation Shield title at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani on Sunday morning.

The game was played for the final 45 minutes after it was rained off on Saturday evening, with Bandari leading 2-1 from that first half.

While Sharks pushed hard for an equalizer in the replayed 45 minutes, Bandari sat deep, defended well and broke on the counter and from such, Mosha tapped the ball with his hip after Abdallah Hassan’s cross was deflected into his path.

Bandari who won the title in 2015 for the first time will now represent Kenya in next season’s CAF Confederations Cup and on top of the Sh2mn reward from winning the title, the dockers will be rewarded with a further Sh1mn from their sponsors Kenya Ports Authority.

Further, Bandari will have their pre-season training in South Africa, as also sponsored by their sponsors for winning the title.

In a cagy affair, highly expected because of the dropped tempo from yesterday, chances were few and very far in between. Bandari’s early chance came in the 56th minute when Mwana picked on a poorly defended ball but his volley from the edge of the area went over.

Sharks struggled to create chances and the usually exciting Harrison Mwendwa was kept quiet on the wings. Keeper Faruk Shikalo was not so much troubled as his backline kept the line tight.

After Bandari had scored their third, some sense of urgency crept into the Sharks side and they came close almost immediately but Fred Nkata cleared the ball off the line after Mwendwa’s cross evaded everyone inside the box.

On the other end, Wycliffe Ochomo forced a great save off Gad Mathews after the bulky forward leaned in to head a cross from Abdallah.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 2 – Manoel Dall’igna dotted down a sudden death try as France broke Kenya’s hearts, hitting Shujaa 26-21 to progress to the fifth-place final at the last stop of the World Sevens series in Paris on Sunday.

The home side had raced from 21-14 down to score a converted try at the death and force the game to sudden death where France picked a line out from kick off and found some space to dot down.

Despite the loss, Shujaa leaves France with their heads held high having picked up 10 points that take their season tally to 37 and assure themselves of avoiding relegation and finishing above Wales and Japan with the latter suffering the chop.

Paul Murunga’s men had already assured themselves of safety on Saturday after progressing to their first Cup quarter this season while both Wales and Japan dropped to the challenge, meaning they would pick more points that their fellow strugglers.

Wales picked a point from Paris after losing to Japan in the 13th place semi-final and move their final tally to 31, six behind Kenya while Japan who will play the 13th place final can only pick a maximum of three points if they win to take their overall tally to 26.

Kenya were far more confidence and went into their second match of the afternoon a buzzed up-side despite losing the Cup quarter to the USA earlier on in the day.

Nelson Oyoo dotted down his fifth try in Paris to break the deadlock after running down 70m to touch down under the posts after sliding through two Frenchmen. Michael Wanjala booted home the twos for a 7-0 lead.

However, France struck back through Marvoin O’Connor who raced down the right after some good work from Stephen Parez who greased through tackles before making the simple offload. Fly half Jean Pascal Barraque booted home the extras to tie the scores.

Kenya went to the break 14-7 up through Oyoo who ran down the middle again after a little offload from Johnstone Olindi blindsided the French. Wanjala stepped up for the twos and slit the posts.

After the break, Kenya remained on the front foot and Cyprian Kuto went over, capping his try with a little dance infront of the Kenyan fans after a line break from Bush Mwale accorded Kenya some good space.

France however went within seven point after Dall’igna scored his second of the afternoon after France won possession and went for the line out where they found space to hurt Kenya.

With Kenya at 21-14 up now and just over a minute left, they had to only ensure France are denied possession. But, charged by a capacity home crowd, France kept knocking and dotted down after Jonathan Laugel went across the line and Barraque converted to tie the scores.

In sudden death. France won possession from the restart, went for the line out and hurt Kenya again.

Kenya hit Uganda in Africa Games qualifier

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 3 – Kenya needed a spirited fifth set performance to hit a stubborn Uganda 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-27, 15-12) at the Kasarani Gymnasium on Monday evening and start their quest for qualification to September’s African Games in Morocco on a positive note.

The home side raced from a set down and recovered from a calamitous end to the fourth set to beat the stubborn Ugandans in a five-set thriller that lasted close to two and a half hours.

Kenya had recovered from losing the first set 25-22 to win the next two sets in identical scores of 25-21 and were on the verge of preventing the game from going to the full length in the fourth set but bottled it to allow Uganda recover and win the set to force the game into a tie breaker.

Leading 24-22, Kenya needed to get their act right with the final ball as just a point would have prevented the trouble of going into a fifth set. However, a mistake in communication in attack when Brian Melly sprayed the ball up for the final sting cost Kenya the set.

Uganda scored a quick two to tie the game and kept the momentum with Kenya out of sorts to win 27-25.

Having won the second and third sets, Kenya burst into the fourth with some good confidence to race from trailing 6-2 to leading 8-7 at the first Technical Time Out (TTO). They kept the momentum swinging in their favor to lead 16-13 at the second TTO, but crunch time failed them big time.

Uganda had made the most out of Kenya’s reception weakness in the opening set, the duo of Kathbart Malinga and Daudi Okello doing the damage with their arrowed spikes.

The two sides exchanged leads in the first and second TTO’s, Kenya being off 8-6 while Uganda turned it over to 16-15 at the second through Malinga’s venomous hit that greased through Melly’s arms.

But Kenya amended their wrongs in the consequent two sets, the impressive Nicholas Matui on his return to the national team set up and the experienced Michael Chemos leading the charges from the front.

A combined middle blocking pair of Jairus Kipkosgei and Rodgers Kipkurui took Kenya 16-14 up at the second TTO and the boys kept the momentum in the final swing of the set, Bob Ongom’s serve to the net giving Kenya’s men the win.

It was a replicate performance in the third set with Kenya leading 16-10 at the second TTO. Uganda tried to squeeze in the gap to 22-20, but Kenya regained its footing to win 25-21.

After the mess in the fourth set, Kenya pushed on by a sizeable crowd at the gymnasium were in no mood for mistakes and they controlled the set from the start.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 4 – Harambee Stars goalkeeper Faruk Shikalo has hinted that Sunday’s Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Shield triumph over Kariobangi Sharks might have been his final match for the Dockers as he closes in on a move next door to Tanzanian giants Yanga SC.

Shikalo has been a prime target for the Jangwani giants since playing a starring role for Bandari in their SportPesa Super Cup campaign in Dar es Salaam in February and the Tanzanians have been said to solidify their approach.

“This might be a good way for me to say goodbye though I cannot entirely say that as at now. But it is a good way for me to leave while on the right side of history after helping Bandari to clinch a title that takes them to continental football. That’s the dream of every player,” Shikalo told Capital Sport.

The keeper has been a core figure for the Dockers this season, playing a massive role in their successful campaign that saw them win only their second major title with the FKF Shield as well as finishing second in the Kenyan premier League.

Bandari also reached the final of the SportPesa Cup in Tanzania, losing to Kariobangi Sharks who they beat to the Shield on Sunday.

Shikalo says he is inclined to move if the offer appeals to him with the Tanzanians having posted his image on their official Twitter account welcoming him to the club, a post they have since deleted.

“Yes, there have been talks, but at the moment, nothing has been concluded. There are still a few things we are yet to agree on and we will make the final decisions after the African Cup of Nations. If we agree, I will move. If not, I will continue giving my best for Bandari,” Shikalo further stated.

Other than Shikalo’s departure Bandari is expected to keep most of their first team players especially with continental football beckoning for them.

Head coach Bernard Mwalala has affirmed as much, saying he will not make massive changes to his squad ahead of their CAF Confederations Cup campaign and an assault at the KPL title next season.

“As a coach I will not make that mistake of trying to change the team because maybe they have not played continental football before. I will keep faith in this squad that I have and build them. Maybe add one or two but not many changes,” Mwalala affirmed.

Bitok to extend spell in Rwanda volleyball

Rwanda men’s national team head coach Paul Bitok shares sentiments with his players during their Africa Zone Five Championship appearance in Nairobi on June 3, 2019. PHOTO/Timothy Olobulu

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 4 – Paul Bitok is set to extend his spell as Rwanda’s Volleyball Federation Technical Director for an undisclosed period of time with his current tenure set to expire at the end of this month.

The celebrated Kenyan coach has been at the helm of Rwandese volleyball for the last decade, helping them to rise and become one of the best in Africa across all surfaces and speaking to Capital Sport, Bitok says the government has asked him to stay on.

“This week we had to negotiate with the Ministry of Sports. It is still pending after the minister requested to have some few months before leaving. I am yet to decide but will do so at the end of the month,” Bitok said.

He added; “I can’t make a decision now because we still have a meeting on the 15th where we will decide on the way forward. After that we will see.”

Bitok is set to lead Rwanda’s beach volleyball teams to the World Championships in Germany with the games stretching all the way to next month, way after his contract ends.

He is also in Kenya taking charge of the Rwandese men’s team playing in the Africa Zone Five Championship which also acts as a qualifier for the Africa Games set to be held in Morocco in September.

The tactician who has previously coached the national women’s team had been touted for an active return in Kenyan coaching whether at club or national level but with the new development, he might be giving a few more years of service to the Rwandese.

But, as they mull over his contract, Bitok will be keen to help Rwanda qualify for the Africa Games, having led them to the 2011 and 2015 events.

His campaign however started on a low, Rwanda losing 3-1 to Egypt in their opening game on Monday evening.

“The first game is always very tough and I think that got to us. Also, when we meet these North African teams like Egypt, there is always some psychological deficiencies because the players feel threatened because it is a North African opponent,” Bitok said.

He added; “The Egypt I saw was not the one I expected because they are not as tough as they used to be. I think we just crumbled but we should be able to rise in the next game.”

Bitok faces his country of birth Kenya in the next game on Tuesday evening and he will be under pressure to pick maximum points to keep his ambitions of qualification afloat.

But he knows it will not be a walk in the park against the home side which won the first match 3-2 against Uganda on Monday.

“It is always a tense match; I don’t like playing against Kenya. It is emotional playing against my brothers, people from my village… but I am a professional coach and I know how to calm myself, do my work and not to be affected by home team. I will do my best and I wish Kenya all the best,” Bitok stated.

Kenya meanwhile will be looking to win the tie to keep their hopes of a first qualification to the Africa Games in seven attempts.

Sharks focus on Everton after tough season

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 4 – Kariobangi Sharks skipper Patillah Omotto has rallied his team-mates to lift their heads high despite the tough end to their season and focus on giving their best in July’s historic friendly match against English premier League side Everton FC in Nairobi.

Sharks have endured a torrid second half of the season that ended up in them losing their Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Shield title to Bandari and finished ninth in the Kenyan Premier League.

The only silver lining in their season has been the SportPesa Cup triumph in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in February which earned them the right to host Everton on July 7.

“We must regroup and come back stronger next season, even better than all the other seasons. We must forget losing the final and how we ended the season and focus on playing against Everton,” Omotto told Capital Sport.

He added; “We have to prepare well for them mentally and physically but the most important thing for us is to learn from them.”

His sentiments were echoed by head coach William Muluya who noted that his side should not put their heads down after the loss to Bandari.

“It is not a disappointment as much because at the end of the day, we have played to the last day every year in this tournament. Bandari have had a good season and they played like champions. They showed hunger and really deserved it,” the tactician stated

“We will keep our minds off football for the next one or two weeks then start planning again. We need to come back stronger and better,” he added.

Muluya has said the biggest impediment to their season has been the lack of experience, with most of his players being youthful and the demanding season that has involved back to back matches with minimal rest taking away much from them.

“Most of the players I have are playing the Kenyan Premier League for the first time. It was a short league and in terms of mental strength I think we lacked and sometimes this comes with experience. But I think they (players) are growing well and I will keep encouraging them. I am sure they will be better in the coming days,” Muluya stated.

Kipyegon, who has won the IAAF Diamond League Trophy before, will use the Prefontaine Classic leg as part of her fitness test as she readies to defend her Olympics title in Tokyo, Japan 2020.
