NAIROBI, January 20 – Javelin star Julius Yego has the extraordinary ability of making anyone in his presence feel at home; his infectious bonhomie an instant magnet that adds to his pulling power.

Last Friday, he rose to be widely acclaimed as the Sports Personality and Sportsman of the Year at the glittering 2015 Safaricom Soya Awards. There was no one in the huge plenary hall who could dispute he stood head and shoulders above the rest in a resounding year where Kenyans excelled across multiple disciplines.

Looking dapper in a light blue suit, white shirt and bow tie, the stocky-built ‘You-Tube Man’ who has established a global following took to the stage and went on to deliver another performance that marks him out as a seasoned politician in the making.

As he spoke, the dazzling presence of retired Cameroon football legend, Patrice Mboma the invited celebrity guest, Soya patron/founder, Paul Tergat, and Cabinet Secretary, Sports, Culture and Arts, Dr. Hassan Wario did not faze him.

Rather, they only acted as supporting cast to a rendition that any Kenyan political titan would be proud of only that Yego was not campaigning to run for office in the 2017 General Elections. His aim is to continue his internal competition to re-write history at the 2016 Rio Olympics this summer.

“I remember watching you and Cameroon win the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, and I told my sister that one day, I will compete for Kenya at the Olympics. The Cameroon team inspired me to work hard and having Mboma here will inspire more young Kenyans to do well in sport.

“Pass my greetings to Samuel Eto’o, I was his big fan,” Yego said, facing Mboma who in those moments, hung on to every word with immense pride, in what was arguably the biggest deed of reverence to his decorated career since he landed in the country.

As he went on with his stirring off-the-cuff acceptance speech, he ruffled no feathers when he paid tribute to his sponsors, Orange Mobile at an event title-sponsored by their rivals Safaricom in another example of his rich oratory skills.

Of course, Yego’s words were not scripted but like a seasoned politician, he possesses the wits to sound great on whatever he is speaking on, whether it’s his beloved Javelin or trending topics on social media, a platform that has significantly enhanced his ascendancy as a Kenyan cross over star.

His appeal has spilled from the confines of sport into popular culture as evidenced by celebrated local rapper, Kaligraph Jones who belted his ‘Yego’ monster hit that conquered airwaves in the latter part of 2015, in tribute to his epic victory at last summer’s IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China.

The tune provided the ideal soundtrack for the two-time African champion and London 2012 Olympics finalist as he walked to the stage to accept the two big gongs at Soya Awards, as well as the Athlete of the Year decoration at the 2015 AK Golden Gala on December 10.

-Humble beginnings-

Yego’s growing stature as one of the most recognisable sport icons in the country owes its roots on overcoming crushing disappointment, when he arrived to the scene as a raw teenager harbouring a big dream.

Every time this writer meets him, the first thing he always says is “Remember 2008?”

As a young reporter striving to cut his teeth in athletics then, Kenyan Trials for whatever age group and event were a no miss since they offered a rich catchment to interact with established and budding stars.

With colleague James Wokabi, now a presenter at SuperSport and Football Sunday on Capital FM, attention to the burly teenager was drawn when he threw an outstanding 72.41m to become the first Kenyan to qualify for the IAAF World Junior Championships at the 2008 Trials in June.

Yego went on to amaze when he narrated his vision was to emulate Czech Republic record holder, Jan Železný who holds the 98.48m standard set in Germany in 1996 when he was barely seven years old.

Then and now, it’s rare to hear a young Kenyan athlete talking of world records and since 2008, he has improved his lifetime best to the African record of 92.72m, the winning giant throw that brought him a first senior world title in China.

However, his hopes of making a name at the 2008 Bydgoszcz World Juniors were cruelly dashed when Athletics Kenya (AK) declined to take him to Poland.

Former Secretary General and suspended Vice-President, David Okeyo, told off this reporter when together with his colleague, took heated protests of the glaring omission to the Panel of Selectors he headed when he named the team for Bydgoszcz at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium.

“We cannot enter athletes in disciplines where we have no chances of winning medals since our budget is tight.” he curtly retorted.

Almost eight years later, a nation now pins her Olympics hopes on a man who has become synonymous with history, since he won his country a maiden men’s Javelin gold medal at the All Africa Games in Maputo in 2011.

Okeyo and indeed all other Kenyans, can only sit and watch.

NAIROBI, January 21- Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) will contract players in the national rugby sevens team based on performances, Capital Sport has established.

Speaking Thursday, Director of Squads and Competitions at KRU, Oscar Mango, refuted claims there was a stand-off with players over contracts saying the outlined proposals had been discussed and agreed by both parties.

“We could not rush to give the players new contracts because there is not time however, they have seen the contracts and they have submitted back with the things they want considered,” Mango told.

He maintained 20 core and seven developmental players will be signed up for the national team for the 2015/16 season that is already underway with the side leaving on Sunday for the third and fourth legs of the HSBC World Series tour of Wellington and Sydney.

Reports in local media suggested unrest among senior players with the team yet to be formally contracted since September when their existing agreement that guaranteed fixed salaries and bonuses as well as medical benefits lapsed at the end of the 2014/15 season.

Delays by title-sponsors Kenya Airways to remit money with the national carrier caught in a gripping financial crisis delayed the contractual agreement between KRU and the players.

Under the new terms that will be sealed when the team returns from Sydney, players will be assessed based on performance while those in the development side and are over 30 years will not be considered if they don’t make the core team.

“We have agreed on few details which we will conclude once they return from Sydney since we can’t give it to half the players who remain behind. We now have a sponsor who has given us the first installment to cater for salaries and allowances,” he added.

Mango disclosed the technical bench that is headed by coach Benjamin Ayimba had agreed terms and all contracts will be back-dated to October for outstanding dues to be settled.

The team that will be contracted will also compete at the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio-de-Janeiro but Mango said only players who will be fit will be drafted in the 18-man squad for the shorter version of the game that is making its debut this Summer.

After an impressive performance in Cape Town 7s where they finished fourth, Kenya are ninth on 20 points and Ayimba will be looking to maintain consistency in Wellington and Sydney.

In New Zealand, Shujaa will take on Canada, Australia and Portugal in a relatively fair pool D.

NAIROBI, January 21 – Education will be the key thing Gor Mahia forward Michael Olunga will be considering as he arrived in Sweden to finalize talks with top tier side Djurgarden IF.

Besides negotiating financial terms, the third year geospatial engineering student also seeks to transfer his credits from Technical University of Kenya to a Swedish institution as part of the transfer.

Olunga who led the 2015 unbeaten SportPesa Premier League champions to their third title in a row, disclosed he is ready for the new challenge if he agrees terms to play in a country where former Harambee Stars defender, Andrew Oyombe played his professional football at Enköpings SK from 2004-06.

“The Swedish top tier approached me requiring for my services but I will look at their working conditions to see what they are offering me, if it’s a concrete deal then I might move but if it’s not I will think otherwise.

I will look at the money they are offering to see if it will benefit me and how they are going to take care of my education and if they agree I will transfer my credits,” the 21-year-old Harambee Stars forward stated.

The Footballer of the Year downplayed claims that it was too early for him to make the move after having a brilliant 2015 season that saw him net 40 goals both for club and country.

“Every person has his own story. I don’t want anyone to compare me either because everyone has his own luck and career path so success of another person doesn’t mean that Olunga will be successful or failure of another person doesn’t mean Olunga will be a failure.

“What matters is to have a big heart to perform and ready for the challenge because opportunities are there to be grabbed so if I take the opportunity and work hard just the way I was doing in KP, then for sure nothing can stop me from achieving,” Olunga said.

Olunga who saw his one-year deal at K’Ogalo expire last year, is expected to be in Sweden for two weeks.

His club team-mate and captain Jerim Onyango has wished him all the best.

He joined Tusker FC straight from Upper Hill High school in 2013 before moving to Thika United the following year where he was the main striker scoring nine goals.

NAIROBI, January 21 – Kenya’s Abel Kirui, Ugandan Stephen Kiprotich, and Edna Kiplagat – all of whom have won two global titles each, are among the top athletes set to compete at the Tokyo Marathon, an IAAF Gold Label Road Race, on 28 February.

The men’s field also includes three men with Personal Bests (PB) faster than 2:05, while the women’s line-up contains the top two finishers from last year.

Emmanuel Mutai is the fastest runner in the men’s field. The Kenyan ran 2:03:13 – the second-fastest time in history on a record-eligible course – when finishing second at the 2014 Berlin Marathon. The Tokyo race will be his first marathon in Asia.

Feyisa Lilesa’s PB of 2:04:52 makes him the second-fastest man in the field. The 2011 world bronze medallist has twice made it on to the podium at the Chicago Marathon.

Dickson Chumba will be contesting the Tokyo Marathon for the third year in a row.

The Kenyan set the course record of 2:05:42 when winning in 2014 and finished third in the Japanese capital last year before going on to win the Chicago Marathon eight months later.

He had finished third in Chicago 12 months prior, setting a PB of 2:04:32.

Kirui won world titles in 2009 and 2011, followed by an Olympic silver in 2012.

The 33-year-old Kenyan set his PB of 2:05:04 at the 2009 Rotterdam Marathon and will be making his third appearance at the Tokyo Marathon.

Kiprotich, the man who beat Kirui to the Olympic title in 2012, is also in the field. The Ugandan followed his Olympic triumph with victory at the 2013 World Championships.

He finished second in Tokyo last year, setting a national record of 2:06:33.

Other Kenyans in the field include Berlin Marathon runner-up Eliud Kiptanui and two-time Amsterdam Marathon champion Bernard Kipyego.

Eritrea’s Teklemariam Medhin, twice a medallist at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, will be making his marathon debut.

The Tokyo Marathon is one of the Olympic team qualifying races for men, so there will be a strong Japanese presence.

Masato Imai, who was the first Japanese finisher at last year’s Tokyo Marathon, will return to the site of his 2:07:39 personal best.

He will be challenged by Kohei Matsumura, the top Japanese finisher in 2014, and Kenta Murayama, who will be making his marathon debut.

Kiplagat makes first Tokyo Marathon appearance

Kiplagat, one of just 18 women to have run faster than 2:20, heads the women’s field.

Like Kirui, Kiplagat owns two world titles, having won in 2011 and 2013. She has previously won the London and New York marathons, but this will be her first race over 26.2 miles in Japan.

She will be up against two women who have won in Tokyo in the past three years.

Ethiopia’s Birhane Dibaba will be making her third appearance in the Japanese capital.

After finishing second in 2014 in a personal best of 2:22:30, she won last year in 2:23:15 and will be aiming to become the first back-to-back winner in Tokyo.

Fellow Ethiopian Aberu Kebede, the Tokyo winner in 2013, will also be on the start line. The 2009 world half-marathon bronze medallist has twice won the Berlin Marathon and set her PB of 2:20:30 there in 2012.

Shure Demise is the third woman in the field with a sub-2:21 PB. The Ethiopian set an unofficial world junior best of 2:20:59 on her marathon debut in Dubai last year. She won the Toronto Marathon nine months later.

Kenya’s Helah Kiprop finished second in Tokyo last year in a PB of 2:24:03 and went on to replicate that position at the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015.

Ethiopia’s former Osaka and Xiamen winner Amane Gobena and 2:23:43 performer Ashete Dido are also in the field.

NAIROBI, January 22 -The uncertainty surrounding Football Kenya Federation Elections took a different twist on Thursday when the Electoral Board announced the cancellation of the verification of clubs and delegates eligible to vote in the Branch elections slotted for Tuesday next week.

The exercise was planned to be held on Thursday and Friday in Nairobi but the Board disclosed they had to postpone the vetting to pave way for a meeting with world governing body FIFA scheduled on the same day.

“The Football Kenya Federation Electoral Board wishes to apologize to those who came to Nairobi for verification process, which was supposed to happen as earlier advertised for what was beyond the control of the board.

“Similarly, verification scheduled for Friday 22nd January 2016 will not take place to pave way for a meeting with FIFA scheduled on the same day. The Electoral Board shall advice on way forward in due course,” the statement from the Board Secretary, Irene Tindi declared.

On Wednesday, the board released the new dates for vetting and representatives from six branches were right in time for the activity that was to start at 1400 hours only to be stranded with no official communication coming from the Board.

The Board chaired by lawyer Donald Kipkorir has been criticized of failing to exercise its duties with reports claiming split between members that has led to the postponement of national elections thrice.

Another rescheduling is in the offing even as Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Arts and Culture Dr. Hassan Wario assured football stakeholders the polls will be conducted on February 10 with the national elections.

“I wrote to the chairman of the Electoral Board and he assured me 10th of February we will have spanking new FKF president and we are telling you whether it’s a man or woman, please change football so that we can go to the Africa Cup of Nations,” Wario stated last week Friday at this year’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

Nairobi East, Nairobi West, Southern, Aberdares, Mt.Kenya and Central Rift branches were to be vetted on Thursday followed by verification of the remaining 14 branches on Friday.

Incumbent Sam Nyamweya who is seeking for a second term re-election will face competition from his former vice chairman Sammy Shollei, FKF-PL chairman Nick Mwendwa, KPL and Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier, business man Gor Semelang’o and former AFC Leopards Embakasi Branch chairman, Semi Aina.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is confident he has learned from his injury-related mistakes, and hopes to miss fewer games in the future.

The 27-year-old has already missed 11 games this season through injury, adding to the 27 he missed over the previous two campaigns.

“There have been times when I’ve come back from injury, played a few games and come the fourth I’ve got injured again,” he told Sky Sports‘ Guillem Balague. “You’re working hard in the gym so it could be the gym work that is affecting your legs, then you think, ‘What else could it be?'”

As City’s talisman, there is enormous pressure on Aguero to play, but he realises that he can’t risk injury as he has in the past.

“The Premier League is so demanding that you can’t play at 80 per cent. I’ve tried turning out at 80-85 per cent fit and that’s when I’ve injured myself. Nowadays I’ve learnt from that and I try not to make the same mistake.

“Now I realise the slightest discomfort and I won’t risk myself, as happened to me for the home game against Sunderland in December. I started the previous game against Arsenal when I felt a slight pain in my knee, and I was told, ‘That’s it, you’re coming off’.

“Now I feel like I’m getting up to full fitness for games and trying to miss as few games as possible, that’s the most important thing.”

ELGOIBAR, January 25- Irene Cheptai broke Kenya’s drought at the fifth IAAF Cross Country Permit meeting in Elgoibar, Spain by taking the honours in the women’s 7.6km race on Sunday.

World cross-country bronze medallist Netsanet Gudeta was the early leader with fellow Ethiopian, Alemitu Heroye, the world junior 500m champion, Cheptai and Uganda’s Juliet Chekwel were right beside Gudeta.

At the halfway mark, the Ugandan was cut loose with the key moment coming on the penultimate lap when Cheptai broke away from her Ethiopian pursuers with ease.

The seventh finisher at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships Guiyang 2015 and over 5000m at the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015, had built a margin of nine seconds at the bell. Gudeta was another eight seconds ahead of Heroye.

There were no major changes on the final circuit and the 23-year-old Cheptai crossed the finish line unopposed, 22 seconds in front of Gudeta to become the first Kenyan woman to win in Elgoibar since 2009.

Heroye had to settle for third and finished slightly injured, so was then treated by the medical team.

“I finished third three here years ago so today’s race is a big improvement,” said Cheptai, who trains alongside Viola Kibiwot. “The weather was fantastic; I really prefer the sun to the cold. I will now return to Kenya to prepare for July’s Kenyan Olympic trials. I would like to compete over 10,000m in Rio.”

France’s Hugo Hay and Spain’s Celia Anton took respective victories at the ‘Mamo Wolde’ Trophy by winning the junior events.

In the men’s 10.8km event of the 73rd Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza meet, Bahrain’s Aweke Ayalew underlined his rich vein of form with his second win in a row in the IAAF Cross Country Permit series, as the 22-year-old had won in Antrim last Sunday.

Held on a sunny and still early afternoon with the thermometer reading 20C, the men’s 10.8km race kicked off at a moderate pace. The opening 400m lap on the track was covered in 1:05 with Tola leading a sextet comprising the Ugandan duo of Timothy Toroitich and Moses Kibet, Ayalew and fellow Bahraini Hassan Elabbasi, plus Spain’s Toni Abadia.

After a 2km lap of 6:13, the leaders slowed to 6:27 for the following circuit, allowing the local pair of Ayad Lamdassem and Ilias Fifa to approach the leading pack. But another loop of 6:15 made Kibet and then Abadia lose ground.

Ayalew and Tola took turns to lead and they reached the bell with just Elabbassi and Toroitich for company.

Ayalew injected a frantic pace during the closing lap which only Tola was able to follow, leaving Elabbassi and Toroitich to fight for the third spot on the podium. Ayalew’s 10th kilometre was covered in 2:44, allowing him to open a 30-metre gap on Tola and effectively killing off his opposition.

At the tape a more than joyful Ayalew had a two-second margin on Tola while Elabbassi easily prevailed over Toroitich.

Much to the delight of the knowledgeable crowd assembled, Spanish cross-country champion Abadia finished a surprising fifth ahead of Kibet, the eighth-place finisher from the IAAF World Cross Country Championships Guiyang 2015.

The next IAAF Cross Country Permit meeting will be the Cinque Molini Meet in San Vittore Olona on 31 January.

NAIROBI, January 26- Organisers of the 2016 First Lady Marathon are targeting a record 70,000 participants although patron and founder, Ms Margaret Kenyatta, will not take part in any high altitude training for the event this year.

The event has gained fame for the running exploits of the First Lady who completed the 21km Half Marathon course in the previous two editions besides finishing the London Marathon of 2014 when it was first held as part of her Beyond Zero initiative.

During the launch at State House Nairobi, on Tuesday, Ms Kenyatta registered as 2016 edition’s first participant and called on Kenyans to register for the 21 Km, 10Km or 5 km races in the event scheduled for March.

“The unique private-public sector partnership, individual philanthropists, the media, the UN family, National and County governments have all contributed to these milestones,” she added.

This year’s event will once again be flagged off at Nyayo Stadium with organisers seeking to increase participation from 50,000 that took part last year.

Ms Kenyatta held training sessions in the high altitude heartlands of Iten and Sagana to prepare for the 2014 and 15 editions under the tutelage of former world marathon champion, Douglas Wakiihuri but that will not be the case this time.

She will instead focus on delivering the remaining 11 mobile clinics obtained from proceeds of the Beyond Zero initiatives with 36 counties already receiving the vehicles that aim at cutting child mortality at the devolved units.

Ms Kenyatta launched the 2016 edition during a breakfast meeting she hosted for various key stakeholders and supporters of the Beyond Zero Campaign.

They included Diplomats, Government departments, corporates, media, UN agencies, spouses of County Governors, members of women parliamentary Association and the civil society among others.

The marathon is aimed at creating awareness and mobilizing resources to fund Beyond Zero activities especially the acquisition of mobile clinics that the initiative has been distributing to the devolved units.

During the launch, Ms. Kenyatta announced the campaign has raised Sh540 million besides receiving donations in kind of medical equipment and kits

Co-operative Bank of Kenya, through its Chief Executive Officer Dr. Gideon Muriuki, pledged a Sh15 million donation towards the effort.

NAIROBI, January 26 – The prize money of the SJAK/SportPesa Player of the Month Award will be doubled to Sh100,000 this season.

The deal that will whet the appetite of may a footballer playing in the top flight was realised after co-sponsors, Electronics firm, LG extended its partnership with the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) on a two-year deal worth Sh5m.

Under the fresh agreement, the firm will continue awarding the best player with a 42-inch smart television for the season set to kick-off on February 13.

The new package will also see prize monies in the season-ending annual Footballer of the Year gala increased with the joint selection panel of SJAK and Kenyan Premier League yet to settle for the figures.

Last year, Gor Mahia forward, Michael Olunga, who is undergoing trials in Sweden, scooped the Most Valuable Player Award valued at Sh1m.

“This year, the footballer of the month award is going to be bigger because we intend through our sponsors to double the amount. Last year during the gala we had TVs that were small and others big so, they will be the same 42-inch in size.

“The sponsors are going to support us in many ways like in our seminars because we are in the business of empowering sports journalists,” SJAK chairman Chris Mbaisi announced on Tuesday when signing the new deal.

Just like last December when the association took the awards outside KPL, awarding the best player at the annual Koth Biro tournament, LG Marketing General Manager, Moses Marji said their aim is to take the initiative to other off season tournaments as they strive to develop growth of local football.

“We have increased the amount because we want SJAK to have a comfortable setting so that they can operate properly. We are supporting with the TVs every month but not just during the Premier League season but also in community tournament,” Marji declared.

The Footballer of the Year Awards was introduced March last year with Ali Abondo, Karim Nizigiyimana, Meddie Kagere (Gor Mahia), John Makwata (Ulinzi Stars), Gabriel Andika (Western Stima), Jesse Were (Tusker FC), George Mandela (Muhoroni Youth) and Jimmy Bagaye (City Stars) feted in 2015.

With the amount doubling, competition is expected to rise this term that could see the MVP receive Sh2m.

Clubs are busy recruiting new players with champions Gor casting their net wide, cap tiring the services of Rwanda national team captain Jacques Tuyisenge who comes in to replace forward Meddie Kagere who declined to renew his contract.

DUBAI, January 26 – Former world marathon record holder, Wilson Kipsang and returning Olympics silver medallist, Priscah Jeptoo are among the Kenyan distance running titans lined-up for the lucrative Ras-Al-Khaimah (RAK) Half Marathon on 12 February.

Organisers released an imposing field for the men and women races that will feature Kipsang taking on New York champion, Stanley Biwott ahead of their April 26 showdown at the London Marathon in an intriguing sparring contest.

Also in the party is Eritrean half marathon record holder, Zersenay Tadese with four of the elite men having run faster than 59 minutes, while the four fastest women including two-time London winner, Jeptoo have covered the 13.1-mile distance within 67 minutes.

Another Kenyan, Bernard Koech is the third-fastest athlete of all time at the distance, although his PB of 58:41 was achieved on a slightly downhill course in San Diego. He finished fourth in Ras Al Khaimah in 2014, running 59:46.

Perhaps one of the biggest challenges will come from 23-year-old Abraham Cheroben, who ran world-leading times in 2014 and 2015 with runs of 58:48 and 59:10 respectively.

Ethiopian Birhanu Legese may not be among the fastest six on paper, but he won a high-quality half marathon in Delhi last autumn in 59:20.

Biwott finished second in Ras Al Khaimah in 2013 and went on to win the New York last autumn. He has a PB of 58:56 and boasts seven major wins over the half marathon.

Tadese isn’t the only Eritrean in the field. Nguse Amsolom was second in Ras Al Khaimah two years ago in 59:39, finished fifth at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen and won last year’s Lisbon Half Marathon.

After finishing fourth in Ras Al Khaimah in 2015, Kenya’s 22-year-old Edwin Kiptoo improved to 59:26 in Delhi.

Two fastest 10km runners in history: Leonard Komon and Micah Kogo also from Kenya are in the field.

Jeptoo returns

Jeptoo has fond memories of the RAK Half Marathon. In 2013 she finished second in 1:06:11, her fastest time on a record-eligible course, and returned in 2014 to win in 1:07:02.

This year’s race will be her third appearance in Ras Al Khaimah and she will line up as the fastest woman in the field.

The 31-year-old Kenyan has never finished outside the podium in a half marathon. She also excels over the full marathon distance, having taken Olympic silver in 2012 and winning in London and New York City in 2013.

World half marathon champion Gladys Cherono has a similarly impressive career record over 13.1 miles and is the main threat.

She has won 10 of her 20 half marathons to date, setting a PB of 1:06:38 in Istanbul last year. She ran 2:20:03 on her marathon debut in Dubai at the start of 2015, then went on to win the Berlin Marathon in a PB of 2:19:25.

With 17 victories from 28 half marathons, Joyce Chepkirui also excels at this distance. She set a PB of 1:06:19 in April 2014 and then won the Commonwealth and African 10,000m titles on the track.

Since finishing third in Ras Al Khaimah last year, Kenya’s Cynthia Limo has improved her PB to 1:06:41. She also won the highly competitive Delhi Half Marathon last year in a close finish.

Gladys Chesire, the 2010 Youth Olympic 3000m champion, only stepped up to the half marathon last year but already has a best of 1:08:36, set when finishing third in Delhi, just one second behind Limo.

It has been seven years since an Ethiopian woman won in Ras Al Khaimah, but Worknesh Degefa could be the athlete to end that drought. She won last year’s Prague Half Marathon in 1:07:14, making her the fastest Ethiopian in the field.

Three-time Dubai Marathon winner Aselefech Mergia, 2009 world 10,000m bronze medallist Wude Ayalew, and 2011 world junior cross-country silver medallist Genet Yalew are among the other Ethiopians entered.

NAIROBI, January 26 – Michael Majua Ouma returns to football management for a second term after being re-elected as Nairobi East chairman in the Football Kenya Federation Branch elections held countrywide on Tuesday.

Bashir Hussein was voted as Nairobi West chairman after collecting 23 votes against his closest challenger Athanas Obala Obango who got 14 votes.

Speaking after being announced winner at Nyayo National Stadium, Bashir said his first aim is to improve the pitches in Nairobi West that consist of Dagoretti, Starehe, Lang’ata and Westlands.

“We don’t have pitches in our branch, so we want to work with other key stakeholders and see how well we can improve on the infrastructure because it’s something that has seen talent in the area go to waste.

“This should not be about an individual, we need to strengthen the institution that we have but not to look on who is leading it,” elated Bashir declared.

Ouma who was Nairobi chairman before it was split into two, beat his only challenger Martin Chiseka to win with a landslide 24 votes against 2 while George Onyango who was deputy secretary general in the past regime was elected as Nairobi East vice chairman.

Onyango floored Duncan Onyango in a hotly contested seat that was separated by four points after garnering 24 votes against 20.

Long serving Nairobi Branch secretary general Stephen Onyango Oduori alias Ragos was the biggest victim of the day, falling to a young contestant Dickson Doyo who collected a massive 23 votes against 3.

In Nairobi West, Washington Lubanga was voted as vice chairman after scooping 22 against Daniel Odera who received 14.

Caleb Ayodi Malweyi won the secretary general’s seat after polling 25 votes against Jeremiah Mwangi’s 13 while Japheth Karori was elected as treasurer.

Nairobi West conducted its polls at Nyayo National Stadium while Nairobi East held theirs at Stima Club with 39 delegates voting in the two Nairobi branches.

Fuad Ali Addy collected 27 votes to win the North Coast Chairmanship seat defeating former chairman John Ngoa who got 21 votes.

In South Coast, incumbent Garero Kazungu was shown door by former Mombasa branch chairman Gabriel Mgendi to take the top seat after getting 26 votes against Garero Kazungu’s 24.

Mgendi will be assisted by Salim Hamisi who got 37 votes after beating Ismael Ogolla who failed to defend his seat.

In the hotly contested secretary seat, new comer Lilian Nandudu floored former FIFA referee Evans Mwachia by 46 votes against 30 and will be assisted by Hasan Bably.

The treasurer post went to Chalambo Salim who beat Joseph Makala while Deona Demba is the new women representative after beating Asha Pili.

The Chairman and secretary general from the 20 branches will join the16 Kenyan Premier League clubs and six FKF-PL clubs in voting at the national elections scheduled for February 10.

Incumbent Sam Nyamweya, Kariobangi Sharks and FKF-PL chairman Nick Mwendwa, Gor Mahia and KPL chairman, Ambrose Rachier, former international footballer Sammy Shollei, Businessman Gor Semelan’go and Semi Aina will be contesting for the presidency seat.

NAIROBI, January 27 – Gor Mahia’s target of raking Sh4.8m (46,950.05) a month was brought back to life after the court dismissed an application filed by Good Bread Kenya Limited that was seeking to block Elliot from supplying branded K’Ogalo bread.

The new development gives Elliot green light to bake and sell the bread that will see Gor fork Sh2 for every branded loaf sold.

Under the case number – H.C.C.C No. 427 of 2015 – Nairobi – Good Bread Kenya Limited vs Uzuri Foods Limited and another, Good bread advocates wrote to Elliot’s (in a letter dated November 3rd 2015) informing them of the dismissal and allowing them to proceed with any business around the same.

“Kindly note that that the said application was dismissed with costs to the 1st Defendant. We were not awarded costs as we had indicated in the Replying Affidavit that we do not wish to participate in the suit.

“Further note that the Interim Orders granted on 9th September, 2015 against the Defendants were equally discharged. You may therefore proceed to sign any Agreement/Contract with Gor Mahia Football Club as well as proceed to manufacture/ distribute and or sell the Gor Mahia Branded bread and or products,” part of the letter read.

“In the meantime, the Plaintiff’s Advocate is contemplating withdrawing Uzuri Foods Limited from the suit.”

Gor parted ways with Good Bread who were giving the record 15-times champions Sh1 for every loaf sold with the club disclosing it was collecting Sh130,000 per day.

The Nakuru-based bread company had sued Gor over their bread branding deal after K’Ogalo terminated their contract.

“The case has been dismissed and Elliot is already supplying the bread but I can’t tell how many breads they are selling a day. Our Marketing guys are in charge of it,” club chairman, Ambrose Rachier, told Capital Sport.

The most decorated club in the country require at least Sh70m (USD 684,688.20) per annum to effectively compete in the domestic top flight, continental and regional tournament whilst fulfilling their obligations to playing staff.

The 2015 SportPesa Premier League (SPL) unbeaten champions has been malnourished financially for two seasons and in July last year, the begging bowl for alms was out to enable them honour the Cecafa Kagame Cup where they finished runners-up after losing 2-0 to locals Azam FC.

Gor have a busy schedule ahead where they will be out to chase six trophies (SPL, CAF Champions League, GOtv, Top 8 and Super Cup)

First in tray will be the CAF Champions League preliminary round where K’Ogalo hosts Madagascans CNaPS in the first-leg on February 13 at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium.

The team is intensifying its pre-season with all the players available except Ugandan midfielder Khalid Aucho and winger Innocent Wafula.

The two are claimed to be on a go-slow demanding their two matches outstanding bonuses with Aucho taking to his official facebook account assuring the Green Army that he will be back by next week.

“My teammates, fans and Gor Mahia family, I’m coming back to play because I’m still a Gor player. I’m feeling some small pain but I will be okay soon and I will be there next week may God bless you all and I love you so much guys,” the post read.

LONDON, January 30 -Arsenal remain on course for a third consecutive FA Cup success after Alexis Sanchez inspired Arsene Wenger’s side to a 2-1 fourth-round win over second-tier Burnley on Saturday.

Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur also progressed, but West Bromwich Albion were taken to a replay by third-tier Peterborough United and Liverpool drew 0-0 with West Ham United.

Arsenal’s win at the Emirates Stadium preserved their hopes of becoming the first team to win three consecutive FA Cups since Blackburn Rovers, who achieved the feat between 1884 and 1886.

“We would love to do it, but there is a long way to go,” said Wenger, who gave a debut to Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Elneny and also welcomed back holding midfielder Francis Coquelin.

“For the first 20 minutes we looked quite in control, but when they equalised suddenly you could see energy, commitment, and we had to dig deep to win the game.”

Making his first start after two months out with a hamstring injury, Chile star Sanchez teed up Calum Chambers to open the scoring in the 19th minute with a fine shot using the outside of his right foot.

Sam Vokes equalised for Burnley on the half hour with a powerful header, but Arsenal, who made nine changes, claimed victory in the 53rd minute when Sanchez slammed home after a neat team move.

Nigerian starlet Kelechi Iheanacho scored a hat-trick as Manchester City kept alive their dream of an unprecedented quadruple of trophies by easing to a 4-0 win at Aston Villa, last season’s beaten finalists.

Iheanacho opened the scoring in the fourth minute, following in to score after Fernando’s header was cleared off the line, and the 19-year-old forward added a second with a 24th-minute penalty.

He completed his hat-trick with 16 minutes remaining, seizing on Idrissa Gueye’s calamitous back-pass and surging through to score, before Raheem Sterling added a fourth.

“Kelechi is a very good young player,” said City manager Manuel Pellegrini. “We let (Stevan) Jovetic and (Edin) Dzeko go because I see Kelechi every day and know what he can do.”

– Bournemouth thwart Portsmouth -City are second in the Premier League, face Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League last 16 and will tackle Liverpool in the League Cup final on February 28.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool were taken to an unwelcome replay by West Ham, who had previously beaten them twice in the league.

Showing 10 changes, Liverpool dominated proceedings at Anfield, but could find no way past West Ham stand-in goalkeeper Darren Randolph.

Tottenham breezed through, Nacer Chadli scoring twice on his 100th appearance and Eric Dier and Tom Carroll also finding the net in a 4-1 win at third-tier strugglers Colchester United.

Liverpool beat Stoke City on penalties to reach the League Cup semi-finals on Tuesday and Mark Hughes’s men met with fresh cup disappointment four days later as they lost 1-0 at Crystal Palace, with Wilfried Zaha scoring.

Portsmouth, FA Cup winners in 2008 but now languishing in the fourth division, were in sight of a major upset when Gary Roberts put them ahead in the 43rd minute of their meeting with south-coast rivals Bournemouth.

But Josh King equalised for Eddie Howe’s side with a 71st-minute header before Marc Pugh secured a 2-1 win.

Saido Berahino’s brace was not enough for West Brom, who drew 2-2 with Peterborough, but Odion Ighalo’s late strike earned Watford a 1-0 victory at Championship representatives Nottingham Forest.

Fourth-tier Oxford United could not repeat their third-round win over Swansea City, losing 3-0 at home to Blackburn Rovers, but third-division Shrewsbury Town stunned Championship side Sheffield Wednesday 3-2.

Chelsea interim manager Guus Hiddink’s quest to repeat his 2009 FA Cup triumph with the west London club continues on Sunday when his team visit second-tier Milton Keynes Dons.

Manchester United were the first team to book a place in the last 16 after winning 3-1 at Championship promotion-chasers Derby County on Friday, with Wayne Rooney, Daley Blind and Juan Mata scoring.

Ndiku, Alamirew set for battle in Karlsruhe

CALEB-NDIKUNAIROBI, January 31-Kenya’s reigning world indoor 3000m champion Caleb Nidiku will take on his Ethiopian rivals Yenew Alamirew and Yomif Kejelcha over 15 laps of the track at the Indoor Meeting – Karlsruhe on Saturday 6 February, organisers for the opening IAAF World Indoor Tour event of 2016 announced on Saturday (30).

The 3000m race between the trio in the German city could quite conceivably be a prelude to the battle for the medals over 3000m at the IAAF World Indoor Championships Portland 2016 in March.

Ndiku also won the 5000m silver medal at the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015 last summer, with teenage prodigy Kejecha – who is still only 18 – fourth in that race.

However, Kejelcha topped the 2015 5000m lists when he won the IAAF Diamond League final in 12:53.98.

Alamirew is very familiar with Karlsruhe’s Europahalle having finished third, second and then third again over 3000m at this meeting in the three years between 2012-14.

He is also the third fastest man ever over the distance indoors, having run 7:27:80 in Stuttgart in 2011.

Another familiar face to the Karlsruhe crowd will be high jumper and German outdoor record holder Ariane Friedrich, who won at this meeting in 2009 and 2010. On the former occasion, she jumped her indoor personal best of 2.05m

Now 32, after several years of injury problems and also giving birth to her daughter, the former European indoor champion has returned to competition this winter and is competing again for the first time since 2013.

NAIROBI, February 1 –Champions Gor Mahia were the biggest spenders in the busy Kenyan Premier League transfer window that closed last night (January 31) ahead of the 2016 campaign that get underway on February 13.

Mathare United were the least, spending only Sh30,000 whilst cash-strapped Sofapaka had the huge chunk of signings, recruiting 25 new players with goal keeper Barnabas Tiema opting to renew his contract.

K’Ogalo rivals AFC Leopards who are also struggling financially bought 21 players as GOtv Shield holders, Bandari spent sh15,000 on five new blood.

Gor who will represent the country at the CAF champions League, coughed Sh4.38m with Sh4m going to Rwanda captain and striker, Jacques Tuyisenge who is the most expensive player this year.

The record 15-tiimes SportPesa Premier League (SPL) winners acquired the signature of defender defender Luke Ochieng on Sh200,000 from kCB to become the second most expensive.

James Ogada from lower tier side Agro Chemicals costed Sh150,000 as Edmond Murai, Sammy Okinda, Gradus Ochieng, Eric Otieno and Leopards center-back Jackson Saleh going for Sh30,000 each signing fee.

Of the eight payers released by the most decorated club in Kenya, Gor did not pocket any amount as all were released as free agents.

Leopards who are struggling to put their house in order saw their budget settle at Sh270,000 on 21 new recruits after experiencing a mass exodus at the end of the season.

Former Harambee Stars defender Edgar Ochieng,(Mathare United) Jackson

Oketch (Chemelil sugar),Joswel Njuguna (Posta Rangers) and Gerald Bagoole are the only experienced players among the 25 first timers.

Batoto Ba Mungu face a tough season a head and having spend Sh180,000 in the transfer window and the in experience new signings, the 2009 winners have seen their pre-season training put into a spin with players demanding their outstanding dues.

The club owned by flamboyant business man Elly Kalekwa did not sell any player of the huge 21 who decamped the team with 12 terminating their contracts.

NAIROBI, February 1 –After collecting 10 points at the third leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series in Wellington, Kenya 7s head coach, Benjamin Ayimba believes his intentions to build a strong team to 2016 Rio Olympic Games is on track.

The national team failed to match Port Elizabeth results where they finished fourth but Ayimba was not a worried man after seeing his charges bundled out in Wellington at the Plate semi-finals by Argentina who beat them 35-14.

Kenya had began well on Day one, continuing where they left after a stellar performance south Africa, thrashing Canada and Portugal before going down to Australia in Pool D fixtures where Billy Odhiambo and record try scorer Collins Injera shone.

The final day was a nightmare to Ayimba boys where they bowed out winless after New Zealand who eventually won the the third round at home demolished Shujaa 36-0 to relegate them to the Plate competition.

“The team is gelling well towards the crucial mid season tournaments and we expect to have a consistent side as we continue with out plan to nature new players in preparation to the Olympics.

“Fans expected us to replicate South Africa performance but this is a game and everybody wants to win. We as a team take it as an improvement. We have learnt our weakness and we are going to work on the mistakes we did in Wellington,” Ayimba underscored.

Kenya who moved a point up in the standings to seat eighth on 71 points head to the fourth leg this weekend in Sydney, Australia with their heads high, where they will take on perennial rivals South Africa, Scotland and new comers Russia in a tricky Pool B.

Among the mistakes that Ayimba will be looking to whittle out is the defence that costed the team a perfect unbeaten start in the opening day where they lost 12-17 to Australia in their last preliminary match.

In the cup quarters, the All Blacks outclassed Kenya in making sure they deny them possession and raised the intensity to avoid embarrassment in front of supporters.

In the Plate semis, Argentina followed the same script and just played on Kenya’s face as they proved a hard nut to crack.

Ayimba is expected to make no changes in his squad that saw fly-half Biko Adema feature in his career 50th tournament in Wellington.

Sydney is one of the three new legs added to tournament this season.

New Zealand won the tournament after edging out series leaders South Africa 24-21.

Overall series defending Fiji finished third after overcoming England 12-34, Australia beat Argentina 21-5 to lift the Plate, Samoa won Bowl courtesy of their 19-7 victory over Scotland while France settled for Shield following their 14-7 win over Russia.

LONDON, February 1 – Arsenal FC would like to visit Kenya and play a friendly but the congested football window in Europe has denied them the opportunity to treat their fans to a lifetime experience.

Speaking to Capital Sport in London, Arsenal Arsenal FC Chief Commercial officer, Vinai Venkatesham disclosed that touring Kenya is something they have discussed but cannot make any further commitment.

Venkatesham acknowledged the massive fan base they have in Kenya, a country he said has rich talent in football and if well utilized, it will see players feature in the top EPL sides, preferably at the Gunners.

“We have never played a first team game in Kenya, we would love but the football window is very congested and that’s the challenge we encounter. Every other year we have a European championship or World Cup so the window is condensed further.

“We know that we have a huge fan base through out Africa and more so in Kenya in particular, so we would like to play in Kenya and its something we have looked at behind the scenes before, but I cant make any commitment,” Venkatesham who has worked at Arsenal for six years told.

He added, “We thank our fans in Kenya for their support we don’t take it for granted because when we are playing matches, we know we are not playing for the fans inside the stadium alone but all over the world.”

West Africans dominate the list of African players who have featured for Arsenal but the recent speculations that linked Harambee Stars captain and Southampton midfielder, Victor Wanyama to Emirates in the just conclude transfer window at least gave hope to East Africans.

“When you hear Wenger speaking about talent identification,he often says the same thing that he doesn’t value passport and what he means is that he is not looking where the players are coming from but its whether they have the quality to succeed.

“Wenger alongside the people who are scouting for talent all over the world are not looking for people of particular nationality but the quality so if Arsene scouts the best talent in Kenya and he is worth, he will definitely give him a chance,” he explained.

Wanyama who is having a tremendous run in EPL was tipped to be on Wenger’s radar but unfortunately nothing materialised as the manager preferred Elnemy who plays similar role as ‘Big Vic’.

Meanwhile, their bitter rivals AFC leopards launched a three-year sponsorship deal with another betting firm Betway amid confusion after one of their chairmen sealed a deal with rival company SportPesa.

“It has taken us time to negotiate with Betway before we signed. It is not for selfish interest. We want to make Leopards self sustaining, Mathew’s Opwora, one of the co-chairmen stated.

However, the Sports Disputes Tribunal declared the deal as null and void after two factions signed separate contracts.

The two factions were in December 2015 directed to form an Interim Management Committee under the mediation of tribunal chairman John Ohaga, to end the wrangling that nearly brought the giant club on its knees.

“Neither of the deals signed were sanctioned by the tribunal. I discussed with the Interim Commettee about this development and we failed to reach an agreement. I have also discussed with the two sponsors who are categorical that they are in their rightful place and defend the deal.

“So the sponsors are ready to go to court to defend their stands but my stand remains that litigation will make this worse and I will be stating in court that as far as the tribunal is concerned, the contracts signed are null and void,”Ohaga announced.

NAIROBI, February 3 – Following their title defence at last year’s Elgon Cup, the national women’s 15s team have been ranked second in Africa and 30th in the world after the World Rugby released the inaugural women’s global rankings.

South Africa is the highest ranked African country, slotting in at 12th while Uganda are ranked 39th in the world and third in the continent.

Introduction of the women’s rankings furthers anticipation ahead of an exciting 18 months of test rugby that will culminate with the 2017 Women’s Rugby World Cup in Ireland.

“World Rugby is committed to driving forward the competitiveness of the women’s game and the new rankings are yet another significant milestone.

After the success of Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2014 and the excitement building up to the next edition in Ireland, it’s vital for international teams to have a rankings focus that will drive exposure and interest as well as increasing the competition schedule, as it encourages member unions to play more test matches,” World Rugby Chairman Bernard Lapasset announced.

The new system will be a weighted with the number of points available to the winning team proportional to the difference in ranking points between the teams prior to the match.

World Rugby World Rankings are calculated using a ‘points exchange’ system, in which sides take points off each other based on the match result. Whatever one side gains, the other loses.

As a result of the relatively small number of matches compared to the men’s and the discrepancies in the number of matches played by different unions, the effect that one result will have on the rankings could unfairly twist the result.

To combat this effect, it has been decided to start all teams out on 80 ranking points (an arbitrarily chosen figure which does not have any bearing on the subsequent results of the rankings) then for each year between 1987 and the year that an individual union played their first women’s full international match two points are deducted from their total.

This deduction occurs up until 2007, so if a team plays their first ever full international after 2007 then they will begin with 40 ranking points.

Similar to the men’s rankings, teams will be penalised an equivalent amount to a loss to a significantly lower ranked team per year if they do not play any matches in the space of two calendar years.
