Wayne Rooney takes on Kenneth Muguna and Ernest Wendo in a friendly match at the Dar National Stadium.

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania, Jul 13- Wayne Rooney announced his return to Everton in Emphatic fashion scoring the opening goal as the Blues beat Kenyan giants Gor Mahia 2-1 in a pre-season friendly match at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Thursday evening.

Kieran Dowell hit the winner with another well taken effort in the second half as the Merseyside club began their preparations for the new season with a win.

Ronald Koeman fielded two different sides in either half with Gor also making almost wholesome changes periodically as the half progressed. It was the second Everton team that injected pace into the game and should have had more goals.

Clearly, though Rooney’s goal might have stolen the show for the first half, an overzealous fan picked up as much highlight when he raced into the pitch in the 21st minute only to hug the scorer of the mercurial goal; Rooney.

Draped in a Manchester United jersey, the young man raced from the stands and into the centre of the pitch, hugely applauded by fan taking much advantage of a short stoppage occasioned by the injury to Ernest Wendo.

After getting a hug from the England international, the fan was carried away by the police. However, the stadium announcer said minutes later the young lad should be released through instruction from the provincial police boss.

Everton head coach Ronald Koeman started a strong team with Rooney, new signing Davy Klaasen, Morgan Schneiderlin, skipper Phil Jagielka and the returning Aaron Lennon all starting.

The opening 20 minutes of the match though were not occasioned with much action infront of goal each team taking time to settle into the match just passing the ball around with ease.

The first effort at goal came through in the 13th minute with Rooney’s effort from a freekick being easily collected by Boniface Oluoch. On the opposite end, Wendo had a shot go wide from the edge of the area.

The midfielder who had put in a shift in the opening minutes picked up a groin injury a few minutes later and had to be substituted for Philemon Otieno.

After the restart with the pitch invader whisked away, Karim Nizigiyimana who had been impressive in the opening minutes of the match had two good chances but both went begging.

He was first picked out with a great pass from Tuyisenge, but his shot went above the bar in the 24th minute.

Four minutes later, a similar ball swung in by Meddie Kagere found him with acres of space, but he took a heavy first touch with Phil Jagielka racing back to cover.

But it was the visiting team who would break the deadlock and came the moment, came the man.

Rooney, in his first match for the Blues since returning after 17 years struck a belter from the edge of the box, after being accorded space from an Olamola Lookman pass.

Gor however replied just three minutes later when Tuyisenge sneaked in at the near post to head home a Nizigiyimana cross.

Tuyisenge seemed to be in the mood and two minutes to half time, he struck a low shot inside the box after two stepovers accorded him space, but the shot was saved by keeper Martin Stekelenberg.

In the second half, Koeman brought in a new team that included Senegalese international Idrissa Gana Gueye, Leighton Baines, Kevin Mirallas and new signing Michael Keane. Gor brought on second choice keeper Peter Odhiambo and Timothy Otieno for Oluoch and Kagere.

It was this second Everton team that would give Gor a run for their money.

Quarter of an hour into the half, a combination of Musa Mohammed and Harun Shakava blocked a point blank effort from Gueye who had rushed to the ball on the right after being picked out by England Under-20 starlet Dom Colvert-Lewin.

Three minutes later, the Senegalese came close with two ferocious shots from distance which were equally well saved by Odhiambo in Gor’s goal. Colvert-Lewin and the impressive Dowell had taken up the attack duties and were leaving Gor in their sixes and sevens.

On the half hour mark, from a training ground freekick, Mirallas pushed the ball to Dowell at the edge of the box and he struck a sweet curling left footer which however came against the crossbar.

Three minutes later though, Everton were celebrating the winner. Dowell picked up the ball from distance, looked up and with Odhiambo a few yards advanced off his goal struck a superb shot into the roof of the net.

Everton continued to dominate with the Gor team further weakened with more first team stars pulled out.

A swift interchange of passes inside the box between Mirallas, Colvert Lewin and Dowell found the latter one on one with Odhiambo, but the custodian spread his body nicely on the ground to thwart the effort.

On the other end, Innocent Wafula was presented with a chance after swiftly pacing away his markers, but he could not make a final decision just a few yards off goal, with the backtracking Everton backline managing to deal with the danger.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 13 – IAAF chief Lord Sebastian Coe on Thursday gave the most positive verdict over the ongoing World U18 Championships at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani.

“The competitions are very impressive and the standards are very high,” said Lord Coe at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani where the global track and field events entered their second day.

Lord Coe, who has been in the country since Sunday overseeing preparations for the championships, was full of praise for the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for putting in place a splendid competition.

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta’s office has worked closely and tirelessly with LOC to ensure the success of the Nairobi 2017 competitions.

“LOC has worked very well and very hard. I am happy working with them”, said the IAAF boss who is this evening scheduled to fly out of Nairobi for London where he is also overseeing the forthcoming (senior) IAAF World championships, London 2017, next month.

Coe, who talked exclusively to PSCU  as he  followed today’s track and field events said he would have wished to take President Uhuru Kenyatta’s  advice on Wednesday to remain in the country much longer to sample the country’s cuisine, culture and the Arts were it not for the demands of his schedule.

While opening the four-day field and track extravaganza Wednesday, President Kenya told the visiting athletes and their officials to find time after the games to sample Kenya’s globally recognized hospitality and related services.

Coe, who is in Kenya for the fourth time after being here during the 2007 World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa, said he is satisfied with the accommodation and catering services being offered for the Athletes at Kenyatta University’s Sports Village.

The IAAF Chief is a former track and field athlete and a four times Olympic medalist including gold in the 1500 metres event (1980 and 1984).

He set a world record in the 800 metres race in 1981 which remained unbroken until 1997. He assumed the IAAF Presidency in 2015.

LOC chairman, Lt Gen (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei welcomed President Kenyatta’s directive for the organizers to open the competitions for free entry to fans and athletics enthusiasts.

He expressed optimism the directive would allow more fans to flock the stadium and cheer up the competitors.

The numbers started picking up this afternoon and more Kenyans are expected to flock the Kasarani stadium as the weekend draws near. The competitions end on Sunday, July 16.

The LOC chairman thanked President Kenyatta for expressing his confidence with the IAAF system, governance and management.

He said the Athletics officials will take President Kenyatta’s advice for Kenya to stop over-reliance  in traditional  track events but explore diversification of field events that include hammer, sprints, pole vault  jumps and throws in which other countries like Jamaica had done very well.

“The message from the President when we recently met him was very encouraging and motivating. IAAF officials were also very impressed with his message (yesterday) when he opened the championships,” said Gen Tuwei.

He said Athletics officials will explore the possibilities for an exchange programme for coaches especially in areas that Kenya seeks to improve on.

Meanwhile, the stadium remained vibrant and lively today with the fans and sporting enthusiasts adopting the popular “Mexican wave” method of cheering up the competitors.

Sukuti drummers and dancers gave the stadium more life with their captivating isukuti dances.

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania, Jul 14- Close to 50,000 fans thronged the national stadium in Dar es Salaam on Thursday evening as English Premier League side Everton played record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia in a pre-season friendly.

Obviously, the biggest attraction of match day was former Everton striker Wayne Rooney who returned to the Merseyside club after 17 years, having left United after a trophy laden career. Fans cheered his every touch and move off the ball.

It wasn’t a huge surprise when just 20 minutes into the match, an overzealous fan raced into the pitch just to hug the former United man.

Either way, this was not the first time it was happening in Tanzania. When the Brazil national team visited Dar es Salaam in 2010, despite watertight security, a fan still managed to invade the pitch and hug Kaka.

But nothing could hide the joy of the Tanzanians as they watched an English Premier League side play in their home turf for the first time in history.

“Sisi twataka hata Manchester na Arsenal waje sasa. Bongo safi (We now want Manchester United and Arsenal to come. Tanzania is a good land),” one of the fans shouted from the stands as he stuck his head out to the tunnel waiting to snap away Rooney, with his own phone probably to show future generations that he was there in the historic moment.

As early as 2pm, the lower stands were almost full; everyone wanted to be as close to the action as possible. Outside, long queues had already started forming four hours to kick off as fans patiently waited to get in and witness the action.

When the Everton support staff emerged from the dressing room to head in and prepare the training cones and bibs on the pitch, they were greeted to a rapturous welcome and the crescendo grew into deafening decibels when they got to the corner of the pitch where Everton would be warming up.

As soon as the Toffees got into the pitch, they were welcomed with a thunderous applause with fans cheering them on. The sight of Rooney grew the excitement even louder.

“This is a massive atmosphere. It is very exciting,” Robert Ecclestone, the Everton FC CEO Commented as he got into the pitch to savour the moment and ensure everything was okay with his team.

Into the match, the electric atmosphere was maintained with the stadium noises hitting the rooftop when Rooney scored his sublime goal just after the half hour mark.

The Everton team also acknowledged that the atmosphere was electric with head coach Ronald Koeman saying it was a great reception and an awesome way to start their pre-season tour.

“The reception has been amazing, the match day itself was great and we thank the people of Tanzania for according us such kindness,” Koeman commented after the match.

-Everton organization-

Another noticeable thing that many East African clubs would probably borrow from the Everton visit is their organization. Three hours to the match, an advance team purely made of support staff had already made its way into the stadium.

They carried with them kits and training equipment. They headed into the dressing room, arranged the jerseys and boots for each player then advanced to the pitch where they set up the cones, bibs and balls in each training zone.

The huge backroom staff gives the coaching team ease and the only thing they concentrate on when they come to the pitch is getting the team tactically and physically ready.

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania, July 14- Everton manager Ronald Koeman was left full of praise of Kenyan Premier League leaders Gor Mahia after they pushed them to the line before winning 2-1 in a pre-season friendly match in Tanzania on Thursday.

Koeman was impressed by what Gor Mahia offered especially in the first half, saying it was a very tough game and one that’s ideal to kick start their pre-season preparation.

“I think it was a good game and also a difficult game. Our opponents today did really a good job to make the match difficult by working hard. They dropped a bit in the second half and we were a better team at that time. Overall I am happy with the performance, this was first friendly,:

“Physically they were stronger because they are in competition while we have just begun pre-season. I was impressed not just by individuals but the whole team because they worked very hard and most of the time we failed to find our free man in midfield,” the former Barcelona midfielder noted.

Everton were forced to work hard by Gor especially in the first half when both sides fielded their strongest 11 with Ernest Wendo completely denying them space in midfield before he pulled his groin.

Koeman said they found it easier in the second half because of a drop in temperature as well as a wet ground which was watered at half time, and he also attributed their improved performance to Gor’s decision not to play high in the field.

The tactician is confident the Gor friendly which was their first this pre-season will spring them into a good season especially as they start their Europa League qualifiers in two weeks’ time as well as campaign to win trophies this season.

Wayne Rooney takes on Kenneth Muguna and Ernest Wendo in a friendly match at the Dar National Stadium.

Meanwhile, the manager has tipped Wayne Rooney to succeed in his Everton return, having scored in his first match for the club on Thursday. He says Rooney’s title winning mentality and hard work will be vital for the side’s hunt for trophies this season.

“Wayne is still one of the best players in his position. He is a winner and knows how to win titles that’s what we want in the team. It is also a great experience for the young boys to play alongside him,”

“Today he showed that his quality is still there with goal had a great performance. He is a player who will take us to greater heights if he keeps fitness. He is key player for Everton,” Koeman noted.

The team has been busy in the transfer market with Davy Klaasen, defender Michael Keane, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and striker Sandro Ramirez among those who have already settled in at Merseyside.

Koeman says he is happy with what he has brought in and targets one or two more players before calling it a wrap and focusing on the new season. He is also pleased with the young players in the squad, five of who were in the England team that won the Under-20 World Cup.

The manager says for him it is not about age but the performance and says he will give them a chance in the team if they prove their worth.

At the same time, the future of midfielder Ross Barkley continues to remain bleak with Koeman saying he is prepared for anything with the player entangled in a transfer tussle. Tottenham Hotspur is interested and the English international is keen on moving.

He was not included in the trip to Tanzania, raising further speculation.

“At the moment it is not a clear situation with him. He is not fit that is why he didn’t travel. Everybody knows his situation and we will see what will happen,” the Dutchman further said.

After leaving Tanzania, the team will travel to Netherlands where they will pitch camp for another pre-season friendly with FC Twente.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 13 – Leonard Kipkemoi will be out to beat his Personal Best when the Boys 2000m steeplechase final will run on Sunday, the last day of the 2017 IAAF World U18 Championships at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.

Both Kenyans qualified for the final and they will be tasked to ensure the powerhouse nation in the water and barrier event retain the title that was won by Vincent Kipyegon in Cali, Colombia in 2015.

Kipkemoi automatically qualified in the second semi-final after crossing the line first in 5:46.66 ahead of Ethiopian Girma Diriba who came second in 5:47.86 while Anil Kalayci from Turkey was third in 5:52.64.

Despite not beating his Personal Best of 5:28.52 set at the Nyayo National Stadium on June 14 during the National Trials, Kipkemoi ran the fastest race of the day to ensure his semi produce two of the best losers.

Now going into the final, Kipkemoi says for Kenya to deliver the gold, they must embrace team work with his compatriot Cleophas Meyan who qualified from the first semi final after finishing second in 5:51.83.

“I did not struggle in the race because I knew this was just the first round, my main aim was to make sure I qualify for the final. I will do all it takes to be a World Champion. I have spoken to my compatriot and agreed on the technique we will use to beat our rivals and ensure we win gold and silver,” Kipkemoi told journalists after the race.

On his part, Meyan who was beaten by Ethiopian Alemu Kitessa, was pleased with his performance, but noted he will rectify his errors in clearing the barriers that cost him the win.

Meyan only took charge of the race from Alemu in the second last lap before the lanky Ethiopian reclaimed the lead to open a 30m gap and go all the way to win in 5:49.79.

“I am very happy to qualify, now its upon me to work hard for the final. I have seen where to rectify my mistakes which is in the clearing of the barriers and at the start because I started off badly,” Meyan, who hails from Nakuru County, said.

“I don’t fear Ethiopians, I can assure Kenyans that there is gold from either me or my compatriot,” the 16-year-old added.

In other results from the morning session, Kenya’s Gloria Mulei sailed through to the Girls Triple Jump final after setting a 12.6m Personal Best in her first attempt.

In the Boys Discus, Joseph Nyakundi failed to qualify for the final after finishing second from bottom of Group A with 30.5m throw to see Kenya have no representative in the final.

It was the end of the road for Mary Moraa in the Girls 200m after she bowed out in the first round, finishing sixth in a time of 25.48.

However, in the corresponding Boys race, Philemon Mopia qualified in the semis with a Personal Best of 21.79 after finishing third.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 14 – It was a golden night for host nation Kenya as George Meitamei Manangoi and Caren Chebet delivered gold at Day Three of the IAAF World U18 Championships at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani on Friday.

With his compatriot Dominic Kipkemboi pulling out of the Boys 1500m final due to injury, Manangoi ensured Kenya retain the title it won in 2015, clocking 3:47.53 to beat Ethiopian Abebe Dessassa who grabbed silver in 3:48.65 while his compatriot Belete Mekonen settled for bronze in 3:50.64.

Up next was the Girls 2000m Steeplechase and indeed Team Kenya did not disappoint the home crowd who turned up at the Kasarani Stadium with Chebet leading her compatriot Mercy Chepkirui to a 1-2 finish, clocking a Personal Best of 6:24.80.

Chepkirui bagged silver after returning 6:26.10, condemning Ethiopian Etalemahu Sintayehu to bronze in a time of 6:35.79.

History was made in the Girls 400m final as sensational Mary Moraa won silver in her Personal Best of 53.31 behind Barbora Malíková of Czech Republic who won gold in 52.74 while bronze went to Brazilian Giovana Rosalia dos Santos who timed a Personal Best of 53.57.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 14 – Having wowed the home crowd at the IAAF World U18 Championships to bag gold in the Boys 1500m on Friday night, George Meitamei has revealed that his elder brother, world silver medallist Elijah Manangoi played a big role in his victory.

With two Ethiopians taking control in the better part of race, Meitamei unleashed a late kick with 200m to the finish line to send fans into a frenzy as he stormed to victory in 3:47.53 and ensure Kenya not only retained the title it won in Cali, Colombia in 2015, but see Kenya open her gold account.

His compatriot Dominic Kipkemboi did not start the race after picking an injury during the semi-finals and Meitamei said that too propelled him to triumph since all the hopes were on him.

“I thank God for the wining gold, everything went as planned. I was advised by my coach and elder brother (Elijah Manangoi) who is my mentor and was here to cheer me. He advised me until the last minute. I also want to thank the fans who kept me moving,” Meitamei said after the race.

“I had to win this gold for my compatriot Kipkemboi who did not compete in this race because he picked up injury so I had to fill the gap,” the 17-year-old added.

His family led by their father were in the stadium to cheer up their own.

“I just will Meitamei all the best in his career and I give him more blessings to win more medals in future,” his father said.

After setting off at a relatively slow pace, the Ethiopian duo of Belete Mekonen and Abebe Dessassa took control of the pack in the early stages, but they seemed in no hurry and Mekonen led them through 800 metres in 2:07.58.

They eventually switched gears at the bell, launching a lengthy drive for the line in an effort to shake off a bunched field, but they were made to pay for their tactical approach.

Having sat back and played a waiting game, Meitamei was rewarded for his patience, drawing clear down the finishing straight to earn gold in 3:47.53.

Algeria’s Oussama Cherrad also produced a strong kick to take silver place but he was later disqualified for obstructing an opponent.

Dessassa was elevated to second position, taking the silver medal in a personal best of 3:48.65.

Mekonen, who had entered the race with the fastest career best in the line-up (3:39.86), held on to take the bronze medal in 3:50.64.

Kenya’s Dominic Kipkemboi was a non-starter for the final, having appeared to have picked up an injury after winning his heat two days prior.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 14 – Caren Chebet’s stunning gold in the Girls 2000m Steeplechase underlined Kenya’s dominance in event as the host nation shot up to second in the medal standings at the 10th IAAF World U18 Championships.

Clearly it was a gold medal for Kenya after the bell when Chebet and compatriot Mercy Chepkirui pulled a 50m gap from closest rival Ethiopian Etalemahu Sintayehu.

Chebet eventually produced a lightening kick after Chepkirui who was leading fell at the last water barrier to win the race in a Personal Best of 6:24.80.

Chepkirui, a pre-race favourite settled for silver despite trying to catch up with Chebet, clocking 6:26.10

The result meant Kenya hauled a total of five medals, two gold and three silver to lie second on the log behind leaders Cuba that has a total of four medals, three gold and one silver.

“My dream has come true, I had hoped to win gold and this victory means that I have a great future ahead. My coach urged me to my best and I am happy I did not let him down. I dedicate this gold to my family,” Chebet, 17-year-old from Saramei Secondary School said.

Chebet on the other hand was disappointed with the silver, saying he did not see it coming since all her focus was on gold.

“I did not clear the last barrier well that led to my fall. When I woke up I did not have the energy, but I tried to catch up my compatriot but could only manage to kick 10m to the finish line but it was too late,” Chepkirui who now turns her attention to next year’s IAAF World U20 Championships stated.

Having pulled away from Chebet in the closing stages, Chepkirui looked to have the race wrapped up on the final lap, but she stumbled at the last water jump and was left sprawled on the track.

Yanking herself back up, Chepkirui soon regained her rhythm, but she could not respond to a late surge from Chebet and settled for second place.

History as Ndigiti gives Kenya first ever medal in Race Walk

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 15 – History was made on the penultimate day of the 2017 IAAF World U18 Championships as Dominic Ndigiti gave Kenya her first ever medal in the 10,000m Boys Race Walk, winning bronze in a Personal Best of 41:25.70.

Zhang Yao clinched gold in 41:12.01 to hand China first title in this discipline while the silver went to Salavat Ilkaev who stopped the timer in 41:24.17.

Ndigiti was delighted with his performance. “I used a lot of energy since I lacked a teammate to pace for me,” he said. “That made me slow down on my last lap because I couldn’t sprint anymore. However, I am happy to deliver Kenya a medal in such an event.”

At the beginning, Sanjay Kumar seemed intent on making a similar piece of history for India and shot to the front, covering the first lap in 1:24 and the first 1000 metres in 3:44.76, well inside world U18 best pace. He was closely followed by Ndigiti and the pair had already built up a lead of 100 metres within the first kilometre.

Thankfully the pace soon started to settle and they covered the second kilometre in a more sensible 4:05. The chase pack, led by Ethiopia’s Meseret Ayelign, was still 22 seconds adrift, but they were operating at a more even tempo.

The pace slipped further in the third kilometre as Kumar and Ndigiti covered that section in 4:13. Salavat Ilkaev and Sergey Kozhevnikov, competing as neutral athletes, and Yao made up ground on the lead pair after a 4:07 kilometre.

Sixteen minutes into the race, Kumar was called into the pit lane for two minutes after being shown three red cards for loss of contact. It meant that Ndigiti was left alone out in front and, having passed 4000m in 16:22.77, his lead was down to eight seconds.

Within the space of two laps, Yao had closed the gap on Ndigiti and moved on to the Kenyan’s shoulder with Ilkaev close behind. At half way, passed in 20:35.58, a lead pack of five athletes had formed as Kozhevnikov and Guatemala’s Jose Ortiz joined Ndigiti, Yao and Ilkaev.

The quintet strode together for three more kilometres before Yao darted to the front. He was followed by Ilkaev but had a comfortable lead and continued to pull away from his opponents.

Yao was away and clear, while Ilkaev was safe in the silver medal position, but with two laps to go, Kozhevnikov moved alongside Ndigiti in the battle for bronze.

Yao crossed the line in a world U18 leading 41:12.01 with Ilkaev taking silver in 41:24.17.

Cheered on by an enthusiastic home crowd, Ndigiti doggedly held on to his position and made up a lot of ground on Ilkaev, eventually finishing third in 41:25.78. Kozhevnikov finished fourth in 41:26.65.

“The race went as planned,” said Zhang. “My strategy was to follow in the first two kilometres of the race and then lead in the last two kilometres, which worked.”

Unbeaten continues as Simbas down Senegal

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 13 – Kenya stayed unbeaten in the Rugby Africa Gold Cup with a 45-25 win over Senegal at the RFUEA Ground on Saturday afternoon.

Steve Sargos put Senegal with an early penalty but the Simbas, with their first foray into the visitors half, built from this and scored through Darwin Mukidza.

He would double his try tally, selling an audacious dummy that split apart the Senegalese defense before racing clear to touch down. The ensuing conversion saw the Simbas go 12-3 up.

Senegal were not out of it yet, Mathieu Boscaro’s hard running eventually creating a platform for Sargos to touch down. Boscaro’s conversion brought the score to 12-10, the visitors, at this point of the game a different proposition from the side that lost 95-0 to Namibia last weekend.

The hosts were forced into an early substitution, Dennis Muhanji replacing the injured Jacob Ojee.

Joshua Chisanga would score moments later, breaking free from the line out to touch down as the Simbas went 17-10 up.

The game would then dip into a lull,Senegal disrupting Kenya’s rhythm before Dennis Muhanji went over with Mukidza converting for the 24-10 half time score.

Jerome Paarwater would throw on Curtis Lilako and Phil Ikambili for Dennis Karani and Peter Karia respectively at the start of the second half.

After seeing little possession at the start of the second half, it was a thing of sheer beauty as the Simbas finally stretched the Senegalese with their phase play, Muhanji combining well with Tony Onyango and Leo Seje to eventually set up David Ambunya for the five pointer, Mukidza converting to put the Simbas 31-10 up.

Martin Owila soon replaced Davis Chenge, slotting into the number eight slot with Joshua Chisanga moving to flank.

From a Kenyan infringement, Sargos drilled home a penalty to cut the deficit to 31 -13, Senegal keen on maintaining respectability on the score board.

The Kenyans, rather painstakingly, tried to ask questions of Senegal but lacked the proverbial finishing kick when in the strike zone, losing two try scoring opportunities in quick succession as the match relapsed into the agricultural exhibition that it was in the first half.

Senegal unable to cope with the constant pressure, capitulated, replacement hooker Ikambili going over the whitewash, his maiden international try seeing Kenya go 38-13 up after Mukidza’s conversion.

They would expose the Kenyan defense, Georges Mendy touching down after Boscaro’s hard work, Sargos converting to bring the score to 38-20.

The visitors were now seeing a lot more of possession, seeking to expose any chinks in the Kenyan armor as the match proceeded. This was not to be as Kenya retained possession from the line out, Kenny Andola’s quick delivery to Leo Seje creating the opportunity for Mukidza to land his hat trick, Andola converting for a 45-20 score. Mendy soon got his double for Senegal, outpacing Tony Onyango to score down the left wing, a twenty point margin separating the two sides.

It would remain this way at full time, the Simbas garnering five points from the win.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 15 – Once again the elusive Girls 1500m gold slipped out of Kenyan hands after Edina Jebitok settled for bronze at the 2017 IAAF World U18 Championships as Ethiopia took a 1-2 sweep on the penultimate day to continue their dominance.

At a packed Moi International Sports Center Kasarani, Kenya had her hopes carried on the shoulders of Jebitok and Rachel Nzangi to reclaim the title it last won at the Lille, France 2013 edition, thanks to Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon Chepng’etich who clocked a Course Record of 4:09.4.

However, despite being cheered on by a near-capacity home crowd, Jebitok found the going tough in the hands of Ethiopians; Lemlem Hailu who went on to claim gold in 4:20.80 and Sindu Girma who grabbed silver in 4:23.16.

The other Kenyan in the race Nzangi finished fourth after clocking 4:24.70 to see Kenya end the last edition of the IAAF World U18 Championships without a gold medal in the Girls 1500m.

“I was poised for a win but I felt pain in my left leg and I couldn’t gather enough energy to push me through. I am not impressed. I should have won gold at home,” Jebitok said after the race.

Few athletes will have faced such an intimidating atmosphere as young Ethiopian pair Lemlem and Sindu, who entered the Kasarani Stadium to the sound of crowd screaming for their Kenyan rivals.

The early pace had been slow, the field passing 400m in a pedestrian 1:13.21 with South Africa’s Nicole Louw leading the way, and the second lap was almost identical, with the field passing 800m bunched together in 2:26.43.

By then Jebitok was looming towards the front, seemingly preparing for an early strike, but it would only be the sound of the bell that coaxed her to the front some 300 metres later.

By the time she passed 1200m in 3:35.69, Jebitok was burning all cylinders at the front, trying desperately to shake the presence of Hailu and Girma, who dogged her slipstream on every step. Approaching the final turn they bolted past, and despite close to 50,000 fans screaming their support, Jebitok had no response.

Hailu continued to accelerate down the home straight, breaking the virtual tape in 4:20.80, her last 300m a swift 45.00. “I was sure of winning coming into this race so I just kept my focus,” said Hailu. “I’m very happy to have won Ethiopia a second gold medal.”

Her teammate Girma came through strongly for second in 4:22.14. “I expected stiff competition from Kenya in this race,” she said. “I had prepared well and I’m happy with the silver medal.”

Matano makes AFC tick again, Ulinzi beats Nakumatt to go top

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 15- Robert Matano began his reign as the AFC Leopards head coach with a bang, guiding them to a 1-0 win over Bandari at the Mbaraki Complex in Mombasa, breaking an eight-match winless run in the Kenyan Premier League.

Matano only took charge of the team on Monday this week and he showed his winning grit by getting the unit together to finally pick up a win and improve their positioning by a spot to 11th. Youngster Marcelus Ingotsi hit the all important goal in the 91st minute.

Elsewhere, Ulinzi Stars moved top of the log after a 2-1 win over Nakumatt at the Ruaraka Complex. The other four matches, Sofapaka v Thika United, Kariobangi Sharks v Kakamega Homeboyz and Mathare United v Sony Sugar ended in identical 0-0 results.

In Mombasa, AFC Leopards went into the match under pressure to get results and had a dig of confidence courtesy of their last result, a 2-0 win over National Super League side Nairobi Stima in the GOtv Shield.

The game was tough, with Bandari equally proving their worth having picked massive results over Tusker FC and Gor Mahia in the league and cup respectively. It seemed to be a match destined for a share in spoils until Ingotsi popped up with the winner in additional time.

In Nairobi, Omar Mbongi scored the winner in the 88th minute as Ulinzi Stars returned to winning ways with a 2-1 result over Nakumatt, the result hauling them to the top of the standings.

Substitute Joshua Oyoo had cancelled out Samuel Onyango’s opener with barely his first touch of the ball, but Mbongi ensured the military side got the much needed three points.

There wasn’t much of goal scoring chances in the first half with Onyango and KPL top scorer Stephen Waruru both having half chances that didn’t materialize. Nakumatt’s closest chance was a Robert Omunuk freekick from the left which sailed wide.

The game opened up in the second half with Ulinzi starting off with pace. They got the opener barely three minutes into the half, but much thanks to a howler from Nakumatt keeper Sammy Okinda.

The former KCB and Gor Mahia shot stopper spilled the ball from a Daniel Waweru cross and Onyango who was lurking in the vicinity pounced and tapped it into the net.

Nakumatt upped the ante in search of an equalizer after being roused from their sleep by the soldiers. In the 58th minute, Boniface Akenga broke away from Mbongi on the left and cut into the box, but Mohammed Hassan pulled a superb tackle to block his shot.

Akenga paved way for Oyoo and just two minutes into the pitch, the forward drew his side level when he picked up a long ball dumped behind the Ulinzi defense, beat Jacktone Odhiambo with his first touch and buried the ball home with his second.

Ten minutes later, Nakumatt almost got the second after a gift of possession from Geoffrey Kokoyo but Kepha Aswani shot straight to Ulinzi keeper Odhiambo who picked up with ease.

Needing a win to keep his title hopes intact, Nyangweso made his first change bringing on Enosh Ochieng for goal scorer Onyango. Ulinzi increased the momentum upfront and they got the winner with two minutes of regular time left.

Mbongi rose in to send a header straight into the roof of the net from a Waweru corner. Ulinzi had gotten the corner after keeper Okinda had produced a brilliant save to parry away a freekick from Waruru.

In the late kick off, Mathare United’s relegation woes continued as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Sony Sugar. The Slum Boys had to finish the match with 10 men after keeper Levis Opiyo was red carded for a tackle on Yema Mwana outside the area.

“As a goalkeeper I think he was left with no option at that time. There was really nothing better to do than that,” Kimanzi told Capital Sport after the match.

Mwana had broken away on the counter after racing away from George ‘Wise’ Owino but after side stepping Opiyo, the custodian stretched his feet to clamp him down.

It was a dull affair with not so much action infront of goal. Sony’s Laban Gambareko had perhaps the best chance of the game five minutes in when a miscommunication between Owino and Opiyo gifted him the ball, but he took too much time and his shot was blocked by a recovering Owino.

In the eighth minute, Daniel Mwaura had a good chance for Mathare after cutting in from the right, but his shot was weak and Kevin Omondi had an easy pick in the Sony goal.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 15 – NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 15 – Kenya surrendered the Boys 800m title to rivals Ethiopia after losing the gold medal for the first time since 2009 with Japheth Kibiwott settling for bronze in a race won by Melese Nberet in a World Lead time of 1:47.12 on Saturday night.

Cheered by a massive over 45,000 lively fans that thronged the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani, Kibiwott could not handle the pressure despite picking up well with 400m left to settle for bronze in a Personal Best of 1:27.16 behind Ethiopian Tolesa Bodena, who timed a Personal Best of 1:47.16 to ensure his country complete a 1-2 podium sweep.

The last time Kenya missed out gold in the event was way back at the Bressanone, Italy edition in 2009, when Swedish Johan Rogestedt condemned Kenyans Peter Langat and Nicholas Kiplangat to silver and bronze respectively.

The result saw Kenya drop to sixth in the medal standings with a total of nine medals; 2 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze while rivals Ethiopia climbed to fourth with nine medals, 3 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze.

After charging through the bell in 51.53, led by Kibiwott, the small lead group stayed together throughout the second lap.

Juan Castro of Costa Rica was the first casualty of the fast early pace, slipping back down the home straight.

While it seemed Kibiwott might be able to hold on after his brave effort, Ethiopia’s Melese delivered a late kick to take gold and shock the Kenyans at home.

“The race was fine. I knew I had to kick in the last metres so I preserved my energy on the first lap,” Melese said afterwards.

Castro settled for fourth position in 1:49.76, he dipped under 1:50.00 for the first time in his career.

Earlier in the day, sensational Mary Moraa from Mogonga Secondary School in Kiisi County, lightened up the crowd when she anchored Team Kenya to the qualification of Sunday’s 4x400m Mixed Relays Final.

The Kenyan quartet of Kelvin Sawe, Gloria Mulee, David Saneyek and Moraa produced a brilliant performance to beat power house Jamaica (3:25.61) and Brazil (3:25.64) from Heat 1 in 3:24.76.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 17 -If there was one great thing about the 2017 IAAF World U18 Championships then it was the mammoth 60,000 fans who thronged the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani as Kenya delighted the world athletics governing body with the historic turnout at the event.

Decked out in their nation’s colours, the Kenyan fans came filling through the gates of the Kasarani Stadium each day beaming wide smiles, extending the arms to welcome the athletics world.

What made it unforgettable, however, was their support anytime Kenyan athletes took to the track, or indeed field. Whether it was a high jumper clearing a bar in warmup, a thrower unleashing a personal best in qualifying or a middle distance athlete storming to victory, they roared their support all week, creating an incredible setting for live sport.

“50,300 spectators in the evening session. 37,600 in the morning session. The largest ever crowd at a World U18 Championships. Thank you Kenya!” IAAF wrote on their official Facebook account.

“It is very electric. I have never seen such a crowd in an IAAF U18 or U20 Championships. This is huge! Kenya is a powerhouse in athletics and this has been shown here,” IAAF commentator John Anderson said.

The breath-taking scenes reminded Kenyans of the 1998 World Cup Qualifier when the national football team Harambee Stars held giants Nigeria to a 1-1 draw on June 7, 1997, the last time the Kasarani Stadium was capacity full.

It was made possible after President Uhuru Kenyatta announced free entrance to the event.

“The stadium is absolutely rocking now, terrific stuff,” IAAF commentator Tony Husband said when commentating the Boys 1500m final where George Meitamei Manangoi stormed to victory to hand host nation Kenya first gold.

The global competition cooled down the political temperatures in the country with all Kenyans uniting to rally behind Team Kenya, who collected a total of 15 medals, 4 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze.

Capital Sport caught up with some of the fans who turned up with their family.

“I’ve never seen such a crowd in my life, I’ve been in many stadia but this is historic. I feel like a Kenyan, it’s so patriotic and I really look forward for a big afternoon,” a fan who came with his wife and two-year-old son said.

His wife Gladys Midecha said, “I am very happy that Kenyans have come out in large numbers to support our very own children, this is the next generation that will take after the likes of David Rudisha so it’s good we give them all the support we can because this is the last IAAF World U18 Championships. It’s Euphoric!”

“It’s hectic but so far so good, it’s an awesome experience being my first time bringing the family to the stadium so they just going have a good time, we are looking forward for the vibe inside,” another fan who came with his two twin sons stated.

“I came to the Stadium to watch it live and be part of history. I have come with my small son so that we can be part of team Kenya,” a mother who came with her one year old baby said.

“It feels great Kenya hosting a world and big international competition like this. I will feel great when I see Kenyans coming together.”

“I am disappointed because of the security checks at the gate, they have created unnecessary chaos…anyway it’s a good feeling to come here and motivate our fellow Kenyans who are participating in this event,” Joe Oketh who came with his girlfriend opined.

“The crowd is massive and it shows how much we love athletics. We have always performed well so I expect the same in the track events,” he added.

-Four gold-

The 60,000 people who turned up on Sunday afternoon may have had a ringing in their ears for several hours afterwards, thanks mainly to the exploits of Kenya’s Jackline Wambui, who powered away to win the Girls’ 800m and lead a 1-2 with teammate Lydia Jeruto Lagat in a World Lead time of 2:01.46.

With Manangoi giving Kenya first medal on Day 3, there was much to cheer about for the home crowd, with Caren Chebet leading compatriot Mercy Chepkirui to a 1-2 sweep in the 2000m Steeplechase Girls before Leonard Kipkemoi Bett bagged Kenya’s fourth and last gold medal in the corresponding 2000m Steeplechase Boys.

Kenya started Day 1 on a silver lining when Emmaculate Chepkirui finished second behind Ethiopian Abersh Minsewo who snatched gold in the 3000m Girls.

Kenya also picked surprise medals in the 10,000m Walk Race thanks to Dominic Ndigiti’s bronze, 400m Girls silver courtesy of Mary Moraa and Moitalel Mpoke Naadokila’s 400m Hurdles Boys silver.

The host nation failed to win gold in 3000m Boys that saw Edward Zakayo collect silver while Stanley Waithaka took bronze.

Once again the elusive Girls 1500m gold slipped out of Kenyan hands after Edina Jebitok settled for bronze as Ethiopia took a 1-2 sweep on the penultimate day to continue their dominance.

Kenya finished fourth overall in the medal standings, a drop in performance from 2015 when it came second with 5 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze.

2017 saw South Africa top the table with 5 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze followed by China who had 5 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze while Cuba finished third with 5 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze.

Kenya’s perennial rivals Ethiopia came fifth with 4 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze.

-Security-

Kenya also proved wrong Britain, USA, New Zealand, Australia and Canada who pulled out of the event citing security concerns.

Security was given maximum priority with National Police Service and National Youth Service deploying their officers before and during the five-day day global showpiece.

Entertainment was at full blast in the village, just outside the main stadium where renowned artists like Nameless, Wahu and comedians like Paul Wa Kimani Ogutu of Churchil Show was wowing the crowd.

World Junior, Diamond League next after U18 success

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 17- IAAF will give Kenya bid documents for the 2020 World Junior Championships after witnessing immense success in the just concluded World Under-18 event, Chief Executive Officer Mwangi Muthee has disclosed.

Muthee, who said, the IAAF ‘went on a blind date’ with Kenya giving it the hosting rights to host a huge international showpiece says the country has proved that it can handle a huge magnitude event having welcomed 131 countries in the five-day carnival in Kasarani.

“Absolutely! Kenya is ready to host another event, even the senior World Championships. I can say that without batting an eye. You can see what Kenya can do; we have been known to be champions on the track and now we have another reputation that Kenya can organize an event,” Muthee said on Sunday evening after the closing ceremony of the championship.

He further reiterated this on Monday afternoon during a post-event briefing, saying the International Athletics body was thoroughly impressed with kenya’s organization and particularly the athletes’ village which was at Kenyatta University.

Athletics Kenya President (Rtd) Gen Jackson Tuwei has also added his voice to the same and says Kenya will bid to host one leg of the Diamond League.

Tuwei has also exuded confidence that IAAF will not hesitate to give Kenya a leg of the Diamond League if they bid for it, basing on the success witnessed during the Under-18 Championships.

Currently, only one leg of the Diamond League is held in Africa, being hosted in Rabat, Morocco.

Fans turned out in Large numbers at Kasarani Stadium for the World Under-18 Championships from July 12-16. PHOTO/Raymond Makhaya

“The government has established very good facilities and I believe if we ask next time to host another event, IAAF will not hesitate to give us. The IAAF boss Seb Coe himself said Kenya can even bid for the World Championships. We need to sit and plan and see how we can go about it. There is no reason why another country cannot be given a chance to host a Diamond League event,” Tuwei noted.

The final two days of the Championship exhibited the highest number ever in an age-group championship.

On Saturday close to 50,000 spectators lit the Kasarani Stadium while on Sunday, the final day of the event, the 60,000 seater Stadium was filled to capacity with thousands locked out of the gates.

“I want to say a big thank you to Kenyans who took their time to come to Kasarani. Even IAAF were impressed because they have never witnessed something like that. This event has been made possible by Kenyans who came out in large numbers,” Muthee added.

Both Tuwei and Muthee further added that despite the championship going through smoothly with no hitch, behind the scenes were huge fights to ensure that things went on as planned. Muthee went on to further state he was impressed with the output considering most work was done behind schedule.

“It is good we have succeeded as a country and as Africa. The success of this championship will inspire many sports federations to emulate what has happened because this was a foundation stone being laid. That success is not just for Kenyan people but all those involved,” Muthee commented.

LOC chairman Jackson Tuwei, Chief Executive Officer Mwangi Muthee and Sports PS Kirimi Kaberia meet IAAF President Lord Sebastain Coe in nairobi. PHOTO/Raymond Makhaya.

Tuwei disclosed that Kenya almost lost the event’s hosting rights at some point and it took a lot of hard work to convince IAAF for Nairobi to retain its status as the host city.

“At first we were supposed to host this event at Nyayo and then we had to change to Kasarani because of some logistical issues. That brought a lot of uncertainty because there were delays and we almost lost this event,” Tuwei, who also chaired the LOC disclosed.

The two also paid glowing tribute to departed Internal Security Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaiserry for the huge role he played ensuring that everything ran as planned, more so that there was no single security hitch.

The LOC will now prepare its report within the next 90 days, but the most immediate task will be to hand over the venues; Kasarani and athletes’ village back to their owners, Sports Kenya and Kenyatta University.

“We hope that these facilities we have worked so hard to put in place will not be wasted. Those responsible should ensure that the legacy continues because this is what Kenyans will remember the games for,” Muthee further added.

AFC’s revival has started, declares Matano

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 17- Robert Matano has warned that AFC Leopards will be a totally different animal in the remaining games of the season after starting his tenure as the club’s head coach with a 1-0 victory over Bandari in Mombasa on Saturday.

Ingwe had previously gone on a nine-match winless streak before Matano took over last Monday, guiding them to their first win in the Kenyan Premier League since early April.

“It was a very tough match but I am glad that we could come out with a win. The players worked hard, gave their all and it was important to start with a win. That now gives us a bit of confidence,” the tactician, fondly referred to as ‘The Lion’ noted.

“We have started and we should expect a different team now. We have changed quite a few things in the past one week we have trained and they have worked out well for us. We are continuing and we can’t say much now. We just take a game as it comes and step by step we make progress,” added the coach.

The win takes AFC to third in the standings and though it is not a significant rise from their previous 12th place ranking, Matano knows it will inject a boost of confidence as they look on for a respectable finish this season.

-Ulinzi rise to top-

Ulinzi Stars head coach Benjamin Nyangweso feeds his team with tactical information at half time during their Kenyan Premier League match against Nakumatt FC at the Ruaraka COmplex on July 15, 2017. PHOTO/Timothy Olobulu

Meanwhile, Ulinzi Stars rose to the top of the KPL log with their 2-1 win over Nakumatt at Ruaraka Complex on Saturday, their first win after a run of five winless games in all competition.

Ulinzi made an important bounce back especially after their GOtv Shield exit the previous weekend and head coach Benjamin Nyangweso believes it will be a turnaround that will aid them to fight for a league title they last won in 2010.

“It is a huge boost because right now, this is the only thing we are fighting for. We have not won since we lost away in Chemelil before the first leg closed and winning against Nakumatt gives us a confidence boost,” Nyangweso offered.

The coach now hopes his side can maintain the same position till the end of the season, but he admits it will not come easy with competition on the top stiff.

“We need to be consistent; that’s the secret. Every game going forward is like a final and we need to give our best,” Nyangweso commented.

Ulinzi sit at the apex with 29 points, same as Posta Rangers but with a superior goal difference, the military side being the league’s best scoring team. Rangers’ win was also an important one as it broke their six match winless streak.

The two teams took much advantage of a slip-up by defending champions Tusker FC who were previously perched top, the brewers going down by a shock 1-0 result to Western Stima in Kisumu.

The result was a huge one to Henry Omino whose side crawled off the bottom of the standings into 16th, but still languishing in the drop zone. While Omino’s men keep their survival hopes alive, Francis Kimanzi and Mathare United are dipping.

The tactician has admitted he is worried with the team’s trend, but remains confident they will avoid the chop.

“I believe we are playing better football than almost all the teams I have seen in the league. It is only the result that is not favoring us. We have small problems especially in finishing but I am confident we can sort those out,” Kimanzi said.

He added; “There is concern of course and a bit of anxiety because when you go for so long without winning, there is some pressure that builds on the players. They want to do things very quickly and end up making mistakes.”

The Slum Boys have only won twice this season, their season opening 3-2 result over Thika United and a shock 1-0 win over Gor Mahia on April 30. Since then, they have gone on an eight-match winless streak, losing five consecutively before drawing the last three.

The 2008 KPL champions have found the going tough this season, especially with Kimanzi keeping belief with young players after the departure of most of his first team players at the end of last season.

KPL weekend results:

Friday: Posta Rangers 2 Nzoia Sugar 1, Western Stima 1 Tusker FC 0.

Saturday: Bandari 0 AFC Leopards 1, Nakumatt 1 Ulinzi Stars 2, Mathare United 0 SoNy Sugar 0, Thika United 0 Sofapaka.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 17- New Gor Mahia boss Dylan Kerr is confident the record Kenyan champions can reclaim the Premier League title from Tusker FC especially with the hunger the club has shown in the two games he has seen them play.

Kerr joined Gor last weekend and watched them lose out on penalties to Bandari in the GOtv Shield, but the performance last Thursday against English Premier League side Everton in a friendly match in Tanzania gives him confidence that the team will do well.

“I think we played really well and showed the world that there is a lot of talent in Kenya. Our first half performance in that match was great, though we went to sleep a bit in the second half. We gave them time and space and when you do that against a team as Everton, you get punished,” the Briton told Capital Sport.

K’Ogalo will not be in action this weekend as the league paves way for the GOtv Shield and Kerr sees this as a blessing in disguise as he looks to pass on his philosophy to the players.

“I think from what I saw in the Everton game, I know what to work on. We have a chance to improve as a team and we should be ready in the next two weeks. I have only had a few sessions with the boys and it is really difficult to get to know your players in that short duration,”

“But now we have a lot of time to work. It might take a while before everything works out but just like it happened at Simba, eventually when it takes shape, things will be okay. I will try to get them to my way of thinking and I know I have to do that quickly,” admitted the tactician.

Despite failing to kick a ball over the weekend, Kogalo remained third in the standings with 28 points, only one shy of leaders Ulinzi Stars.

Among the things Kerr hopes to work on before their next league match is the reaction and concentration of players as well as finer details in the final third of attack.

“In the second half against Everton, we kind of switched off. I don’t know whether the players who came on were not watching us in the first half. That is an area of concern. When you come in, you have to play in the same intensity,” said the tactician.

“We also need to work a lot on the final third. The decision making bit is a bit worrying. We can be better and faster.”

On his preferred playing style; “I have noticed that not only in Kenya but in Africa, teams love to take long strides from 50, 40 yards instead of playing out wide and quick. That’s my style and I am hoping we can do that at Gor Mahia,” the coach further disclosed.

Meanwhile, Kerr who arrived in Kenya having left his job as Chesterfield FC’s Under-18 coach believes the quality of football as well as atmosphere and state of the pitch exhibited on Thursday as Gor played Everton will attract more teams to play their pre-season games in Africa.

“What we saw on the pitch was great. The surface was fantastic and it was just like playing at Goodison Park or Old Trafford. The people of Tanzania can be proud of this facility and hopefully, we have more teams coming,” the coach, previously with Tanzanian giants Simba noted.
