Success of IAAF World U18 championships vindicated Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 18 – The cradle of mankind has suffered immensely both in the hands of foreigners and local despots. With a history that is written with the souls of Africans who were forcefully shipped to faraway lands as slaves and the blood of Africans who were killed during colonisation, fight for freedom and neo colonial wars, the continent has known turmoil.

It still continues to search for the elusive rest as it hurts from the internal and external sources of pain that continue to be inflicted.

Of all the battles Africa has fought, the framing of the continent by western media as a ‘hot bed of terror’, ‘hopeless continent’, ‘dark continent’ among other negative stereotypes is the battle it’s yet to fight and win.

On May 13, 2000 the world woke up to a headline that was plastered on the front cover of the Economist, an influential British Weekly magazine. A story titled the ‘Hopeless Continent’ formed part of the cover of the magazine together with a depiction of Africa as a man carrying a missile launcher.

The past weekend, social media was awash with a story that was done by the same magazine titled “Paul Kagame, feted and feared.”

The story claimed that “Rwanda is a more prosperous country than ever before and it is also a repressed one.”

Opinion on the article was varied.

“Kagame fits the stereotype of the African dictator because they are becoming few and few in the continent,” noted Prof Levi Obonyo, Dean, department of Communication Language and Performing Arts, Daystar University.

“The West planted the seeds of the genocide through colonial anthropology & Christianity. The Germans, Belgians, Catholic church are implicated,” tweeted Dr Wandia Njoya, the HoD, department of Communication Language and Performing Arts, Daystar University.

Obonyo calls the western framing of the African story as a case of ‘parachute’ analysis that lacks the ability to appreciate the local text.

Closer home, Kenya has been a victim of the ‘parachute’ narrative, especially from the US giant broadcaster CNN.

In March 2013, the Government of Kenya demanded an explanation from CNN over a video clip that was aired and showed alleged militia arming themselves in the Rift Valley, ahead of the polls.

The clip showed militia armed with guns made from iron piping and bullets bought from the black market.

Kenyans on Twitter (KoT) didn’t hesitate in calling out CNN’s reporting as a fabrication.

Before Kenyans recovered from the ‘militia story’, CNN was at it again describing Kenya as a “hotbed of terror” just before US President Barack Obama made his maiden trip to Kenya while in office.

“President Barack Obama is not just heading to his father’s homeland, but to a hotbed of terror,”  read the opening sentence of the CNN’s web story.

KoT did not hesitate to respond, branding Kenya as a hot bed of beauty.

However, that has not stopped the determined Western media to push their narrative even if reality on the ground points out otherwise.

“Even if a factual story is filed by a local journalist that contradicts the western frame, they would rather ignore it and maintain their own framing,” noted Obonyo.

Earlier in the year, countries including the USA, among others withdrew from the participation in the IAAF U18 world Championships which just ended citing crime and terror.

The US was the sixth team to pull out of the IAAF World Under-18 Athletics Championships that was hosted in Nairobi.

In a world where terror has been witnessed in countries that were perceived to be safe e.g. UK, US, Germany, Belgium, France among others, pundits say that it smirks of double standards to brand specific places as prone to terror.

“The State Department’s security summary includes risks for all types of crime, from theft to violent crime and terrorism,” read the statement.

But when an ecstatic crowd estimated to be over 55,000 filled up the Moi International Sports Complex, Kasarani Stadium for the last day of the IAAF Championships, it was a clear indication that indeed Kenya is a hot bed of beauty.

There were no reported incidents like terror scare, violent crime, theft or terror. It went on to break the record as the largest crowd ever at a World Under 18 Championships over 50,000 spectators.

Nondi hopes to fulfill potential in Georgia

“It has been a good season for me because I have found some playing time at the club and also got several call ups to the national team. I have not yet made a break into the final squad but I am working hard to be there,” Nondi said.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 17- Gor Mahia midfielder Amos Nondi has moved to Georgian top tier side Kolkheti Potti on a three-year deal, joining his former teammate Erick ‘Marcelo’ Ouma who signed for the club early January.

Nondi attended trials at the club over the last three weeks of June and impressed the technical bench enough to hand him a full contract.

Speaking to Capital Sport from Georgia, the midfielder who has captained the national Under-20 team has termed the move as a dream come true and hopes it is going to be a spring board for bigger things in future.

“It has been a long journey and for me getting a contract with a European club is a huge thing. It is the start of a dream and I believe this is the beginning of bigger things to come. Of course the hard work does not stop here,” Nondi told Capital Sport.

The midfielder is already one week into training with team and his immediate task is to break into the starting team and accumulate playing time, better than he did during his time at Gor Mahia.

“The players have been welcoming and I have enjoyed every bit of training since I arrived. The intensity is very high and everyone works hard. The speed of the game is also high so I need to adapt fast. But so far, so good. I think I have done well to catch up,” he noted.

“Marcelo has really helped me to settle in and that’s why things have been smooth. He has been here and he knows how things go and we played together at Gor.”

“A prime priority at this moment is to get into the team and play. It is a bigger platform and hopefully I can prove myself and get a bigger platform as I progress forward,” the midfielder added.

He hopes to have a decent first impression this Friday when the second leg of the Georgian Erovnuli Liga kicks off with an away trip against log leaders Dinamo Tbilisi. Poti are currently placed second from bottom, with 17 points.

Nondi hopes he can inspire the club to move up the standings.

Meanwhile, another Kenyan, John Macharia has joined Poti’s junior side, also on a three-year deal. The 18-year old ex-Laiser School alumni had been playing at Talanta FC on loan from Kariobangi Sharks.

Paarwater eyes Zimbabwe, Namibia win

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 18- Kenya 15s head coach Jerome Paarwater will be looking to continue with the winning spirit when the Simbas head to Southern Africa for the final two games of the 2017 Rugby Africa Gold Cup against Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Paarwater remains confident the team will keep its unbeaten run intact and expects a better game compared to last weekend’s home tie against Senegal where Kenya won 45-25 although the head coach was hugely disappointed with the West Africans’ tact of slowing down the game.

“It wasn’t a pretty game at all. It was an ugly game and not played in the right spirit of the game that we want to play. I am not happy with the game especially at the breakdowns and I told the referee before the game they would try to slow the game down,” Paarwarter said.

“We couldn’t get going, unfortunately there wasn’t much we could do, but when it opened up we made in our tries. I am happy with five points but not happy with the game,” he added.

Saturday’s victory took Kenya to second behind log leaders Namibia with a two point buffer and they remain unbeaten in the opening three games, having drawn 33-33 with Uganda and beating Tunisia for a record 100-10 score in the second game.

Paarwater’s plot to reclaim the African Gold Cup that Kenya last won in 2013, will hugely hinge on the results they pick up over the next two weeks beginning this weekend when they play Zimbabwe in Harare.

Leaders Namibia will be away to Uganda in Kampala and if the Rugby Cranes can pick up a win at their Kyadondo Club base and Kenya beats Zimbabwe, then leadership will exchange hands.

Paarwater targets to pick maximum points from both encounters, but admits it will be tough, though he expects a better and cleaner game.

“I don’t think any of those teams will try to slow us down because both Namibia and Zimbabwe are positive teams who want to go out and enjoy their game. They will want to play the game in good spirit,” Paarwater stated.

“Our game is played on speed, Zimbabwe play on speed as well, Namibia is a little bit slower but not negative. Hopefully they will be good games,” the coach further pointed out.

Zimbabwe, who are third in the standings, has already lost once, having gone down 31-26 to their fellow Southern Africans Namibia last weekend away in Windhoek.

AK to establish County Youth Training Camps

NAIROBI, Kenya Jul 18- Athletics Kenya (AK) will work with all the 47 county governments in a bid to establish county level Youth Training Camps to increase the scope of talent tapping and nurturing to ensure future world beaters are molded at an early age.

Speaking to Capital Sport, AK boss Lt. Gen (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei said talks are already in progress and this should be achieved once the Council of Governors approves the proposals.

“We have already discussed with the chair of the Sports Committee in the Council of Governors (Paul Chepkwony, Kericho Governor) on how the counties can come into this. We have another meeting planned and he has promised to present the proposal to the council,” Tuwei said.

“Our plan is to have a program where we can have these kids in camp in every county and we cannot do it alone as AK. Our work is mostly to coordinate. These counties have budgets for sports and we should tap into that. We already have a program with schools and once we add this, we are good to go,” added the former military man.

The move is necessitated by the wealth of talent discovered as Kenya pruned out its team for the IAAF World U18 Championships which ended last Sunday in Nairobi and Tuwei has admitted that there is immense talent in the grassroot only lacking exposure.

He added further that the federation will look at ways in not only putting up the camps but also equipping them with the right equipment and coaches to ensure the talent is guided and molded in the right way.

Tuwei has admitted the lack of more qualified technical personnel especially in the sprints and field events has hampered Kenya’s growth in disciplines that are not traditionally known to emanate from the country.

However, the administrator has promised more technical officials, including retired athletes will be trained to ensure the athletes are equipped with skills and tactics.

Meanwhile, Tuwei says the team that represented Kenya in the just concluded U18 games in Kasarani, will be nurtured with a good percentage of them eying a transition to the juniors, with next year’s IAAF World Junior Championships set for Tampere, Finland.

“The only challenge is that most of them are still in school and the only time to get them together is during the holidays. But we will keep tabs on them and when the trials come, we will definitely give them a chance,” Tuwei added.

At the same time, Tuwei congratulated the team for the good performance in Kasarani, finishing fourth after accumulating 15 medals, 4 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze.

“It was a very good performance because none of these athletes had been previously exposed to such an atmosphere. The pressure that comes with the expectation might have weighed down on them a bit but nonetheless, we are proud of their performance,” Tuwei noted.

Kenya picked four gold medals through George Manang’oi in the 1500m, Leonard Bett and Caren Chebet in the 2,000m steeplechase Boys and Girls respectively as well as Jackline Wambui in the 800m Girls.

Kenya can host IAAF Diamond League -Letting

Kenyan track and field coach David Letting believes Kenya has the qualities to host a successful IAAF Diamond League leg. PHOTO/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 18 – After successfully hosting the 2017 IAAF World U18 Championships, track and field coach David Letting feels that Kenya should now stage a Diamond League leg.

Letting, who is also convinced Kenya can host IAAF World Championships, saw his views adopted on Monday when Athletics Kenya President Lt. Gen (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei and Mwangi Muthee, the Local Organising Committee CEO for the just concluded World U18 Championships announced that Kenya will bid to host the 2020 IAAF World U20 Championships and one of the Diamond League leg.

Speaking to Capital sport, Leting said Kenya has proved to the world that it can host global competitions successfully, insisting that nothing stops the nation that has produced world beaters from hosting other world events.

“The IAAF World U18 Championships has shown that Kenyans love athletics because the stadium was full until security locked out many people meaning it was over 60,000, so this shows that we can host any international event like Diamond League, World Championships or World Challenge. We are capable since we have the facilities,” Letting said.

However, despite noting that the Local Organising Committee delivered a world class event, Letting challenged the government to revamp other stadia across the country to international standards.

“It was a world class event because everybody is happy, IAAF is happy about the crowd and the officiating. We need to improve in other structures in Nairobi and other towns.”

Morocco is the only African country that has the privilege of hosting an IAAF Diamond League that is normally run July in Rabat.

A lot of lessons can be drawn from the success and short comings experienced during the IAAF World U18 Championships especially Football Kenya Federation who are set to host the 2018 Africa Nations Championship.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 19 – The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has announced that 2018 international tests will be spread across the country in a move to develop the game in the regions.

The KRU board seeks to bring international 15-a-side rugby closer to the grassroots and increase the game’s popularity and visibility. The Union said that the move is consistent with the practice in major rugby playing nations like South Africa, New Zealand and Australia who rotate test matches across

KRU has earmarked Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Machakos and Kakamega as potential regional venues and has pledge to support the regions in the logistics of the matches as the requirements of test rugby are significantly higher than domestic competitions.

“Fifteen a side international rugby is growing rapidly with Nairobi hosting six test matches this year, all of which have been very well attended. The timing is right to extend this unique product across the country and grow the test match experience and culture across the country,” KRU Secretary Oduor Gangla said.

“A number of KRU affiliates have already expressed strong interest in hosting such matches and we look forward to engaging with them from September 2017 to actualize this plan.”

The KRU has also stated that it has started the process of meeting the local authorities and affiliates to discuss the venture of evaluating each venue under criteria such as playing facility, transport and accommodation to ensure infrastructure is achieved to host games of such magnitude.

“For this venture to be successful the support of our affiliates across the country is essential and this will deepen our working relationship. Part of the returns of these events will be earmarked towards legacy rugby development programs that will contribute to the growth and development of the game and support initiatives of the affiliates in the regions,” he added.

This undertaking will promote local businesses since KRU will look to introduce new commercial partners into the game especially regional companies and the county governments who have significant budgets for sporting activities.

The Board father reassured the public that the plan is consistent with the broad mandate of KRU to grow and develop the game of rugby union.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 19 – As part of its long-term commitment to improve and develop sports by nurturing talent at the grassroots level, Tatu City has partnered with the Foundation for Youth Cricket and Education (FYCEK) to set up a cricket hub at Tatu Primary School.

The hub will provide cricket and life skills to children attending Tatu Primary School, with the possibility of being extended to other schools in the area in the near future.

FYCEK has already started training over 200 students at the school in timetabled physical education classes during term time. They will also arrange training during the school holiday in August, and will continue sessions during the November-December holiday period.

The training program will last eight weeks in total and involve a minimum of 50 students. In the future, inter-school cricket tournaments will be arranged, sharpening skills acquired through the training and fostering a competitive spirit among the participants.

Speaking at the sponsorship announcement ceremony, Tito Oduk, Commercial Sales Manager for Tatu City said, “The partnership is in keeping with our commitment to ensure that we are not only building a city for the future, but also encouraging our youth in the neighboring community to be responsible citizens.”

Students undergoing the training also will be coached on character development, with the long-term goal being to equip them with life skills that will support their overall growth and personality development.

The character development program will focus on seven key areas, including curiosity, determination, enthusiasm, gratitude, optimism, self-control and social intelligence.

FYCEK Project Manager David Waters said, “We are introducing the game of cricket to kids who have never played it before. We are very grateful to the Tatu City team for supporting this initiative to provide sports and life skills to pupils at Tatu Primary School.”

The partnership adds to the list of sporting engagements that Tatu City is supporting. These include a partnership with the Kenya Rugby Union for the Kenya 15s team’s test matches and the recently unveiled partnership with Shamas Rugby Foundation that has seen a rugby clinic set up at Tatu Primary School, with the aim of nurturing youth talent in the sport.

LONDON, United Kingdom, Jul 19 – Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy suggested on the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Sunday morning  that Manchester United should make a move for Tottenham Hotspur defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama in the summer transfer window.

Wanyama is one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League and is an important player for North London club Tottenham.

“If Man United are after anyone, why don’t they go for Wanyama? He is a Jose Mourinho-type player,” Cundy said on the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Sunday morning (broadcast from 7am, July 16, 2017).

The Kenya international joined Spurs from Southampton in the summer of 2016 for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth Sh1.4bn (£11m).

The 26-year-old has established himself as a key player in Mauricio Pochettino’s team and made 35 starts in the Premier League last season.

Former Chelsea and Tottenham defender Cundy has suggested that United should make a move for the former Celtic star in the summer transfer window.

Jose Mourinho’s side have been linked with Tottenham star Eric Dier this summer. According to The Mirror, the Red Devils are ready to make a Sh8.1bn (£60m) bid for the 23-year-old England international, who can operate as a defender or as a defensive midfielder.

SportPesa set to expand operations in Uganda

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 19 – Kenya’s leading sports betting firm SportPesa is set to expand its operations to Uganda, just two months after opening office in Tanzania if talks between the Uganda government and the company are concluded successfully.

Uganda Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Florence Kiyingi is leading a Ugandan government delegation that arrived in Kenya on Wednesday evening.

Kiyingi has extended an invitation to SportPesa to go to Uganda on July 26 for talks on how to set up their business in Kampala.

Kiyingi went to Dar Es Saalam Tanzania to watch Kenyan Premier League side Gor Mahia take on English Premier League club Everton FC in an international friendly match organised by Sportpesa.

She also went to personally extend an invitation to Sportpesa to set up camp in Kampala like they have done in Nairobi and Dar Es Saalam.

“We are here to start up the dialogue between Sportpesa and Uganda football to ensure that we participate in the East African League (The Sportpesa Super Cup) and also to ensure that SportPesa comes to Uganda to invest in the Uganda league,” Kiyingi, who is the chairperson of the Ugandan Premier League giants Express FC said.

Uganda Minister for Youth and Children Affair, Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi.PHOTO/courtesy

Just like in Kenya, the Uganda parliament recently passed a bill of 35% tax on the profit that is awaiting consent by President Yoeri Kaguta Museveni.

Kiyingi outlined that the law if implemented is not to raise money for the Uganda government, but to demotivate people from going into irresponsible gambling and will not affect all players in the industry.

“So we are reversing the trend as the ministry responsible for young people. I have made it a point to look for people to invest in sports, give the youth employment. We can achieve and reduce the interest in tax (for those investing in sports) so as to promote sports in general.”

“To me I take SportPesa to be an investor and not really a business person. So we want them to come down to Uganda and together we look at the regulation further,”she added.

Uganda Minister for Youth and Children Affair, Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi is the chairperson of Uganda Premier League side Express FC.PHOTO/courtesy

This looks like a blow to the gaming industry in Uganda as well because of the 35% tax on the profits of the gaming companies. But in the case of SportPesa and anyone investing in Uganda sports, there is an exemption.

“We are going to look at SportPesa in isolation because it is coming with a heavy weight of promoting football; investing in academies, investing in young people, giving them employment. It is beyond betting, it is beyond gaming. So we are looking at the other side of investment and then we shall make sure that we sit down and dialogue,” Kiyingi revealed.

Kiyingi says if Sportpesa was to put the same amount of investment in football like in Kenya and Tanzania, then Uganda football will grow in leaps and bounds because what Uganda lacks now is adequate sponsors in sports.

“The talent is there, the morale is there, the demand is overwhelming but what is missing is the capital injection in football in general and branding.”

If Sportpesa land in Uganda it will take nine months before they start operations as per the regulations. All that might change as a delegation from SportPesa head to Uganda for discussions with the Uganda government and if successful, they will meet with President Yoweri Museveni to fast track the process.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 19 – KCB RFC skipper Curtis Lilako has been handed a start as the Kenya 15s team lock horns with Zimbabwe in their fourth Rugby Africa Gold Cup at the Hartsfield Stadium in Bulawayo on Saturday.

Lilako replaces Dennis Karani who has been knocked out of the travelling party due to academic commitments while Bramwell Mayaka has been reinstated coming in as front row.

Mayaka was last in action in the 30-29 loss to Germany in an International Test match played at the RFUEA Ground on May 27.

“We are happy that Bramwell comes in with youth and aggression,” forwards coach Dominique Habimana said.

Commenting on the team’s preparations, Habimana said, “We have rectified a few areas of concern…we are working towards a faster…more positive game.”

Jacob Ojee is available for selection after being passed fit. The winger was substituted during the first half of last weekend’s clash against Senegal but has since recovered sufficiently to return to the team. “We are happy that Jacob is at 100%, “Habimana declared.

Meanwhile, lock Oliver Mang’eni will link up with the side for the Namibia clash. Mang’eni missed the last two fixtures against Tunisia and Senegal due to personal and work commitments.

Asbel Kiprop is upbeat he will be fit for the IAAF London World Championships Trials.PHOTO/The Star

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 20 – Three-time 1500m world champion Asbel Kiprop leads a jam-packed athletic talent that includes super star Usain Bolt who is the is guest of honour for the 30th birthday of the Herculis meeting in Monaco to run on Friday.

Olympic 1500m champion Matt Centrowitz will have a rigorously testing evening against the two 21-year-olds who are the top Kenyans of the moment – Timothy Cheruiyot, who leads this season’s world list with 3:30.77, and Ronald Kwemoi, second in the world this year with a 3:30.89 at altitude as he beat Cheruiyot to the Kenyan title in Nairobi.

Also lurking in the field with something to prove is Kiprop. This track has witnessed some super-fast 1500m times, and tomorrow night could add to that legacy.

The women’s 3000m brings together Kenya’s Olympic 5000m silver medallist Hellen Obiri and Britain’s European indoor 1500m and 3000m champion Laura Muir, 12 days after their rousing contest over the mile in London which saw Obiri set  a national record of 4:16.56 and Muir register a personal best of 4:18.03.

Olympic champion Conseslus Kipruto clears a hurdle on his way to winning the 3,000m race at the Rome Diamond League on June 8, 2017 in a World Lead time. PHOTO/IAAF

Kenya’s Olympic 3000m steeplechase champion Conseslus Kipruto faces a field that includes Olympic silver medallist Evan Jager of the United States and his two leading Kenyan rivals, Jairus Birech and 35-year-old double Olympic champion Ezekiel Kemboi.

But Kipruto’s biggest challenge may be the ankle problem that caused him to drop out early from the race in Rabat last week.

The men’s javelin could be a similarly telling event to the men’s pole vault, given the presence of the two Germans who have seized the event by its neck in the space of the past year.

Olympic champion Thomas Rohler has been consistently in 90-metre territory this season, having opened with 93.90m at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Doha.

But his place behind Jan Zelezny on the world all-time list was taken by compatriot Johannes Vetter, who produced four 90-metre throws on a single night in Lucerne on 11 July, the best of them being 94.44m.

Julius Yego is one of the world’s leading javelin competitors

Also in the field are Kenya’s world champion Julius Yego, and 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as the Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch, who has a best of 88.02m this season.

Olympic and world 800m champion Semenya has been unbeatable at her main distance this season, but the Monaco field includes all those most likely to challenge her, including the Olympic silver and bronze medallists, Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi and Margaret Wambui of Kenya.

For most athletes competing at the Stade Louis II, this will be the last opportunity to sharpen up for the IAAF World Championships London 2017 from 4-13 August, and to secure their place in the IAAF Diamond League finals in Zurich on 24 August or Brussels on 1 September.

The Monaco leg of the IAAF Diamond League will provide a superb opportunity for the Kenyan athletes to gauge themselves against tough opposition for the final time before they head to the British capital with Kenya looking to defend its world best status.

But hugely, most of the Kenyan eyes will be on world silver medallist Elijah Manangoi who targets to lower the world record in the 1500m. Manangoi, a two-time Diamond League Meet winner made this proclamation early in June pointing out it has been within his plan for a long time.

The 24-year old will have plenty of great memories from the Monaco track, having set his personal best of 3:29.67 two years back in 2015.

But with a season’s best of 3:31.90 set in Doha early in May, it will be a tall order for Manangoi to drastically lower the 19-year 3:26.00 record set by Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj.

Manangoi will be joined in the race by three-time World Champion Asbel Kiprop, Timothy Cheruiyot and Ronald Kwemoi all who will be representing Kenya in London. Others are youngster Justus Soget, Jackson Kivuva and Charles Cheboi.

Kiprop will be looking to step up his preparations as he eyes to win a first ever world title in London, running in his fourth Diamond race this season. However, he has not had a stellar season, his best performance being a third place finish in the 800m at the London Anniversary Games at the beginning of the month.

-Obiri-

At the same time, on-form Hellen Obiri will be working on her speed when she lowers to the 3000m. The Olympic silver medalist declared last month after the Kenyan Trials that she is in the form of her life after setting the 5,000m National Record in Rome on June 8.

She will also be joined in the team by Margaret Chelimo who will be running alongside her in the 5,000m in London and the two will be looking to sharpen their team tactics to ensure Kenya wrestles the gold medal from Ethiopian Almaz Ayana.

2015 World Cross Country champion Agnes Tirop, who will be competing in the 10,000m in London, will also be working on speed after scaling down to the 3,000m race. Other Kenyans in the race include Lilian Kasait and Nelly Jepkosgei.

They should expect competition from Briton Laura Muir and Ethiopia’s Burka Gelete.

In the 800m, the pair of Rio Olympic bronze medalist Margaret Nyairera and 2013 World Champion Eunice Sum will once again line up against Rio Olympic Champion Caster Semenya of South Africa as they put to test for the final time tact to bring her down in London.

Nyairera has twice finished behind Semenya in the Diamond League this season, in Doha and Eugene in May. The South African has won all her 800m races this season, her worst performance being a seventh finish in Rabat last weekend when she stepped down to run the 400m.

Nyairera has run a 1:57.03 season’s best but in the relatively fast Monaco track, she will be looking to better that time. Sum has not been at her mercurial best this season, her best performances being two third place finishes in Doha and Lausanne.

-Yego-

Julius Yego throwing during the finals

In Javelin, Julius Yego who marked his best ever throw in Kenyan soil last month during the National Trials will square it out with world leader and Olympic champion Thomas Rohler and fellow German Johannes Vetter for the final time before London.

Rohler has been on a roll this season, throwing a world lead and his personal best of 93.90m and has thrown above the 90m mark on two other occasions this season. Yego, with a season’s best of 87.97m has continually said he is not worried ahead of his World Championship title defense.

“It is different in the Diamond League and in a Championship. Yes, Rohler is on form but we will see how things go when we get to London. I am optimistic I will defend my title and I am currently keeping up with my training,” Yego who had been training at Nyayo Stadium said.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 20 – This year’s Ndakaini Half Marathon will be graced by 2006 Commonwealth Games 10,000m gold medallist, Lucy Kabuu when the 14th edition will be held September 30 in Gatanga, Murang’a County.

Kabuu, who was handed her running jersey during the launch on Thursday, will run in the main 21km race.

Several Ethiopia and Uganda runners have confirmed participation in the race where they will tackle a course that will take them around the scenic Ndakaini Dam that lies about 80 kilometers from Nairobi City at an altitude of 2,040 meters above sea level.

This year’s marathon will witness some major changes in terms of prizes with winners of the 21km category for both men and women categories taking home Sh300,000 up from Sh200,000.

The runners up will receive Sh150, 000 up from 100,000 and third place Sh105, 000 for both men and women.

UAP Insurance Company Managing Director James Wambugu believes that this year’s event is touted to be bigger than last year as they are targeting over 5,000 runners compared to last year’s -3,500 participants.

“Discussion is underway; we are expecting runners from neighboring Uganda, Ethiopia and other foreign countries. We shall update you once we have concrete confirmations. Otherwise registration which still remains Sh1, 000 has started from different registration centers and those who are busy or committed can register on-line which is a bit cheaper at Sh800,” Wambugu said.

Speaking at the same function, the Chairman of the Ndakaini Environment Association (NDEKA) Professor Joseph Kimura said participants will have the privilege of having the first sight of the newly furbished stadium at Ndakaini which is ideal for family outings and social.

“We expect a good turn out this time considering Ndakaini Marathon is touted as the second largest running race. We have liaised with Athletics Kenya for anti-doping procedures and also, we are working with the local government, administration and security apparatus to ensure we come up with a credible marathon,” Kimura said.

Patrick Ngetich and Brigid Kosgei are the men and women defending champions respectively.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 21- President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday feted the Kenyan team to the just concluded IAAF World U18 Championships with Sh100, 000 each and a four-day trip to Mombasa as a token of appreciation for their performance in the global competition.

The team will ride on the Madaraka Express to Mombasa on Saturday and are expected back on Wednesday.

While congratulating the team that collected a total of 15 medals; 4 gold, 7silver and 4 bronze, Kenyatta told the upcoming stars to write about their experience on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) as well as the stay in the coastal city and send the reports back to him.

“You have made our country proud. That week of the IAAF World Championships put Kenya on the map as the event brought together teams from across the globe,” President Kenyatta said after hosting the team for breakfast at State House.

“You have marketed our country. The number of people who turned out to watch the event tells about what you did for the country.”

“You have done our country proud. It doesn’t matter the position you came, it’s not about winning but it’s about doing our nation proud. I send you to Mombasa to enjoy yourselves and send me your experience on the new SGR,” a jovial Kenyatta said when he received the national flag back from the team.

The Head of State also commended Kenyan officials and organizers for making the global event successful, saying they proved to the world that Kenya is capable of hosting international championships including an IAAF Diamond League leg.

“Even if you go by the numbers of Sunday, a day I wish I was able to join you, the turnout of Kenyans coming to witness showed that Kenya can host major sporting events. We are the home of athletics. We are the home of champions. From the feedback I have received from participants from different parts of the world, they marveled at our organizational capacity,” he stated.

The President assured that his administration will continue supporting sports to ensure the youth benefit from their talent.

Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture and Arts Hassan Wario said his ministry will top up on the President’s personal reward.

“As a ministry we will sit down with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and see how we can reward the athletes. We will send something to their guardians,” Wario said.

Wario noted that adoption of the camp system where the young athletes were kept together in training groups helped to improve their performance.

“We kept these athletes in camps; we had a camp in Baringo, Kisii, Keringet in Nakuru, Machakos, Bomet, Kapenguria and Riruta in Nairobi. The camps were run directly by the ministry and the camp system according to coaches helped a lot.”

“Ethiopia brought a very strong team; they won both 3000m boys and girls. If we had won that we would have been number one. Our tactics did not work against Ethiopia so we need to work on that. The absence of USA, Britain and Japan gave advantage to South Africa, Cuba and China otherwise they would have split the medals and Kenya be number one,” Wario claimed.

The fast rising athletes freely and joyfully mingled with the President and expressed their delight as they turn their attention to the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships to be hosted in Tampere, Finland.

“I feel very happy to meet the President. I thank him for the reward and we have promised to continue raising the Kenyan flag high next year at the World Junior Championships. I can’t wait to go and have fun in Mombasa,” Edward Zakayo who won silver in the 3000m boys told Capital Sport.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 21- Harambee Stars First Coach Stanley Okumbi is looking on for a better performance from the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) All-Star team when they play Spanish Segunda Division side Sevillla Atletico at the Estadio José Burgos Quintana in Malaga on Saturday.

The All-Star team was handed a 4-0 beating in their first friendly match against another Segunda Division side Cordoba CF on Wednesday night and Okumbi hopes his squad has learnt from that woeful performance.

“We conceded very soft goals especially in the second half; our defense was not working as it should. We gave away two very easy goals and two penalties but I hope we have learnt from that,” Okumbi said.

The coach challenged his side to get used to play and pass faster, saying that was the biggest difference between them and the Spanish side on Wednesday.

“We weren’t as sharp on the ball. The passing and speed of movement is something that we should have worked on in the second half and when we failed to do that, we ended up conceding,” Okumbi said.

“These are some of the lessons we take. The movement and speed is quite high here and not like what we are used to back at home. It is not something that we can get right immediately but hopefully we can get it,” the coach added.

Seville Atletico is the reserve team of La Liga side Sevilla CF and feature Cameroonian national team keeper Fabrice Ondoa. Last season, they finished 13th in the Segunda Division, the second tier of Spanish football.

Okumbi’s target heading into the Saturday night fixture will be to ensure the team keeps a clean sheet.

The entire squad, with the exception of Ugandan goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya is seen as a pillar of coach Okumbi’s team for the African nations Championship (CHAN) which will be held in Kenya in 2018.

The tactician says the two friendly matches in Spain, courtesy of the KPL’s partnership with La Liga will help his side improve as they seek to make an imprint in the tournament which they will feature in for the first time ever.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 21- Contrary to the previous years of the five-year partnership between Football Kenya Federation and GOtv, this season’s GOtv Shield will only have seven out of 64 matches beamed live on Supersport.

This will only begin from the quarter final stage meaning most of the lower tier teams who were always looking forward to seeing themselves live on TV will not have a chance as most have already been eliminated.

The tournament is heading into the round of 16 this weekend and no match has been broadcasted so far. The South African Pay TV company exited their partnership with the Kenyan Premier League in March this year.

The contract between GOtv and Football Kenya Federation is in its final year and is highly unlikely they will renew.

Despite the cut in local sporting content, Philip Wahome, the Multichoice Kenya Corporate Communications Manager said the company ‘remains committed to promoting local content’.

He said this on Friday morning as Multichoice launched their coverage for the new football season which begins proper on August 11 when the English premier League and Spanish LaLiga new season kicks off.

SuperSport is already screening pre-season friendly matches.

The new season will also see a significant increase in the volume of continental football broadcast on SuperSport and DStv subscribers can catch action via a Zappa decoder for Sh5,000 only for a full kit and one month free compact bouquet. The DStv Explora is currently retailing at Sh10,499 full kit.

The new season will also see a significant increase in the volume of continental football broadcast on SuperSport.

Over 250 Confederation of African Football (CAF) matches, including the Champions League, Confederations Cup, Africa Nations Championships (CHAN), World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers and Super Cup, will be broadcast.

Ugandan delegation in Kenya to hold talks with SportPesa

SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri (left) and Ugandan Youth Minister Nakiwala Kiyingi (right) during the meeting at the SportPesa headquarter offices in Nairobi.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 21 – A high powered government delegation is in the country from Uganda led by Youth Minister Nakiwala Kiyingi, to hold talks with African leading sports gaming firm SportPesa.

The Ugandan government has been in talks with SportPesa behind the scenes, with the hope that the betting firm will set up office in Kampala coming hot on the heels of the successful launch of their Tanzanian market, SportPesa TZ two months ago.

The talks have been further spiced up after it was revealed that the Ugandan government was willing to make concessions to SportPesa so as to give it entryin their market.

SportPesa is currently fighting a new law in Kenya that will see it pay 35% on of their revenue as tax, unlike in Uganda where the proposed law has 35% on profits.

Speaking after their closed door meeting at their headquarters, SportPesa Kenya Chief Executive Officer, Ronald Karauri said that they were excited with the commitment the Ugandan government has shown in their product and most important sports development at the youth level.

“We are committed to supporting the development of the game in Uganda, just as we have done in Kenya and Tanzania both on and off the pitch and the will to offer advice and mentoring support across a range of business areas to include; stadium operations, marketing, media & business management.

Karauri added that the Ugandan delegation had also offered them an opportunity to help their government regulate the sector.

“Just like the teething problems we have in Kenya, Uganda also have an influx of illegal gaming players. We are more than ready to help the Ugandan government streamline the sector, now that they have officially invited us (SportPesa) for a series of meetings in Kampala,” Ronald added.

On her part, Minister Nakiwala said that they were in the country with the full blessing of President Yoweri Museveni to start up the dialogue between SportPesa and Uganda football to ensure that we participate in the East African League (The SportPesa Super Cup) and also to ensure that SportPesa comes to Uganda to invest in the Uganda league.

“Our government is looking at SportPesa as a serious investor and not really a business person. So we want them to come down to Uganda and together we look at the regulation further,” she said adding that President Museveni was keen to attract investors who were keen to open up opportunities for the youth.

“We are going to look at SportPesa in isolation because it is coming with a heavy weight of promoting football; investing in academies, investing in young people, giving them employment. It is beyond gaming. So we are looking at the other side of investment and then we shall make sure that we down and dialogue,” explained Kiyingi.

Nakiwala was accompanied by Charles Muyimba, Executive Director of Uganda North American Youth Development Association, Joshua Baguma who is a Youth Sports Ambassador and Desire Kakande.

Continental ticket hunt intensifies as GOtv Shield enters Round of 16

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 21- Holders Tusker FC and two former champions, Bandari FC and Sofapaka will headline the GOtv Shield round of 16 ties which go down this weekend as the hunt for the single ticket to represent Kenya in next year’s CAF Confederations Cup intensifies.

Tusker will be looking to defend its title while Sofapaka, winners in 2014 and Bandari, winners in 2015 look to add another title to their names.

On paper, Bandari and Sofapaka will have the toughest afternoons. Bandari will be in Mombasa against fellow Kenyan Premier League side Nakumatt in what will be a repeat of the 2014 final while Sofapaka will be at the Nyayo National Stadium, tackling last year’s semi-finalists Kariobangi Sharks.

Tusker will be at their Kinoru Stadium ‘slaughter house’ taking on fourth tier side Butterfly. Head coach George Nsimbe has warned his charges not to underrate their opponents.

“Cup games are usually very tricky; even a lower tier side can eliminate you. We can’t afford to underrate them because we don’t know what they are capable of doing. We take this match seriously just like those we look at in the KPL,” Nsimbe said as he sharpened his boys for the Meru sojourn.

The team warmed up to the Butterfly challenge with a 3-0 thrashing of National Super League side Ushuru FC, giving them a huge confidence boost after back-to-back Premier League losses.

Enroute to the last 16, Tusker were made to labor before beating National Super League side Palos FC 1-0 with Jackson Macharia scoring the lone goal. Macharia will not be available for this weekend’s tie alongside new signing Boniface Muchiri as they are away in Spain with the All-Star team.

Meanwhile, Sofapaka boss Sam Ssimbwa will be looking to guide Batoto ba Mungu to their fourth ever Shield title, having won it in 2007, 2010 when he was partly in charge and 2014.

But their quest will come under a huge obstacle in the name of Kariobangi Sharks. The Premier league new boys have not lost a league match since April 22 when they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Posta Rangers.

With head coach William Muluya underlining they will be seeking an improvement to their performance from last season, Sharks are angling for nothing short of a win against Sofapaka.

Kariobangi Sharks head coach William Muluya gives instructions during training at teh Utalii Ground on January 24, 2017.PHOTO/Timothy Olobulu

“It will be a very tough match because Sofapaka is doing well currently and we are also doing well. I expect a tough and entertaining game but just like any other coach, my aim is to do better than the last time,” he said.

“But our strategy is taking a game at a time. At the moment our focus is on Sofapaka and getting a win off that match,” the tactician further outlined.

In the tough tie, Muluya will miss three of his key players; Midfielder Patillah Omotto and winger Ovellah Ochieng who are in Spain with the All-Star team while left back Bolton Omwenga is out with a knee injury.

But he is not disturbed an inch.

“We have a very good squad with enough depth. We will definitely find cover for them. It cannot be an excuse not to do our best against Sofapaka,” Muluya affirmed.

-Bandari host Nakumatt-

In Mombasa, history-seeking Paul Nkata who eliminated 10-time champions Gor Mahia in the last round will be taking on Nakumatt, well aware the Nairobi-based side will come in with all venom. Bandari beat Nakumatt 4-2 in the final of the 2015 tournament.

“That is in the past and I don’t think it will have an effect in the game on Saturday. Nakumatt is a very tough team and we can’t afford to get into the match with a relaxed mind. We have to fight for every piece of the field and hopefully pick a win,” Nkata noted.

The Ugandan tactician, winner of the title last year with Tusker, is looking at being the first man in the history of the tournament to win the title back-to-back with two different teams. Nakumatt has already travelled to Mombasa this season, losing 1-0.

In other eye-catching fixtures Sony and Nzoia will duel in a sugar-belt derby of sorts at the Awendo Stadium. Sony eliminated last year’s finalists Ulinzi Stars in the last round and come with ounces of confidence against Nzoia.

Salim Babu is looking to guide Sony to their second ever major title which might be coming 11 years after they last won one, the Kenyan Premier League title in 2006.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 21- Substitute Marjolen Wafula and Martha Emedot scored a brace each as the Harambee Starlets Under-20 team put one foot into the first round of the 2018 U20 Women’s World Cup qualifier with a 7-1 rout of hosts Botswana in Lobatse on Friday evening.

Barring catastrophe in the second leg set to be played on August 4 in Kenya, the junior Starlets have more or less progressed to the first round where they will meet neighbors Ethiopia.

“We played well and according to instructions and I am pleased with the performance today. Everyone played well. Marjolene is our super sub and when she came in she gave what we always want from her and performed well,” Starlets head coach Caroline Ajowi said.

She added; “We worked as a team because one strong thing about us is that we are like a family and that is how we get the results,” the coach added.

Ajowi further attributed the success in the preliminary round match to the team’s apt fitness with a bulk of the players having featured in the just concluded national school games in Nyeri.

“A bulk of our team is from secondary school and so most of them come into the team with good technical ability and the fitness levels are great as well. That is what has stood out for us today because the players were close knit also because of the good camp we have had,”

After a tough opening half where Kenya still managed to go into half time with a 2-1 lead, they came back more determined in the second 45 with Wafula hitting two quick fire goals before Corazone Aquino, Diana Mwihaki and Emedot contributed to the haul.

The Junior Starlets started the match well and broke the deadlock through Emedot before Cynthia Masungu took advantage of a defensive lapse in the hosts’ backline to make it 2-0.

The hosts, pushed by the home crowd put in concerted efforts to draw back on level terms and they got the much needed goal through a Leona Busang freekick which evaded the wall and beat Kenyan keeper Lilian Awuor.

If they manage to maintain the same performance against Ethiopia, Starlets will book a second round ticket against either Algeria or Ghana and from there, they will only be a step away from qualifying to the 2018 U20 Women’s World Cup to be held in France.
